CHAPTER 10

CHAPTER 10

The Battle for the Whitmore Empire

The photograph remained on the table.

Nobody touched it.

Nobody spoke.

Because sometimes the truth was not shocking because it was impossible.

It was shocking because it explained everything.

Daniel's father.

Richard Whitmore.

The quiet man everyone ignored.

The man who never raised his voice.

The man who appeared harmless.

Had been standing behind the entire nightmare.

I looked at Daniel.

His face had lost all color.

"My father..."

He couldn't finish.

Evelyn closed her eyes.

"I should have told you years ago."

Daniel looked at her.

"You knew?"

The question was filled with pain.

Evelyn didn't answer.

And once again, silence became the answer.

"You knew my father was involved."

Daniel whispered.

"I suspected."

"Suspected?"

His voice rose.

"You spent my entire childhood teaching me to fear Arthur, but you let Richard continue?"

Evelyn looked away.

"Because I thought I could control him."

A bitter laugh escaped Daniel.

"You thought you could control everyone."

The words hurt her.

Because they were true.

Detective Laura Chen placed another file on the table.

"We need to focus."

Everyone turned.

"Richard Whitmore has been moving money through several hidden accounts for twenty years."

She opened the file.

"Your father's disappearance."

She pointed to a document.

"The hospital records."

Another page.

"The fake accident report."

Another.

"The edited mansion footage."

My hands tightened.

"All connected to him?"

Laura nodded.

"But that's not the worst part."

She looked at me.

"He knew Emma was the legal heir."

The room became silent.

I felt cold.

"How?"

Laura answered:

"Because he was the one who investigated your family before you were adopted."

My heart stopped.

The orphanage.

The highway.

The night I was found.

My entire life suddenly felt planned.

"He knew who I was?"

I whispered.

"Yes."

"Then why let me live?"

Nobody answered.

Until Evelyn spoke.

"Because he needed you."

I looked at her.

"For what?"

Her expression was filled with regret.

"To inherit the Carter assets."

I couldn't breathe.

The marriage.

The family.

Daniel.

Was I just another piece on their board?

Daniel immediately stepped forward.

"Emma, no."

I looked at him.

"You knew my identity before we married."

His face fell.

"Yes."

The answer hurt.

"But I didn't marry you for that."

I said nothing.

Because I wanted to believe him.

I wanted to.

But trust was something the Whitmore family had destroyed piece by piece.

That evening, Richard Whitmore finally appeared.

Not through documents.

Not through secrets.

In person.

The man walked into the Whitmore mansion like he owned every stone.

Because he did.

He was older than I expected.

Gray hair.

Calm eyes.

A smile that looked almost kind.

That was the frightening part.

Monsters were easier to recognize when they looked like monsters.

Richard looked like a grandfather.

"Emma."

He said my name gently.

Like he had known me forever.

I immediately stepped back.

"Don't."

His smile faded slightly.

"You have your father's stubbornness."

"My father is alive because you failed."

For the first time, his expression changed.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

Anger.

Then it disappeared.

"Thomas always believed truth would save him."

Richard said.

"He was wrong."

Daniel moved between us.

"Leave."

Richard looked at his son.

A strange sadness crossed his face.

"Is this what she taught you?"

Daniel froze.

"What?"

Richard smiled.

"Your mother taught you to obey."

A pause.

"But she never taught you to lead."

Daniel clenched his fists.

"I am not you."

Richard laughed softly.

"That's exactly what I feared."

He looked at me.

"You have no idea what you are fighting."

I stared back.

"I know exactly."

"Do you?"

He stepped closer.

"The Carter family lost because they were weak."

"The Whitmores survived because they understood one thing."

"What?"

"Power does not belong to the person who deserves it."

He smiled.

"It belongs to the person willing to take it."

I felt anger rise inside me.

"My father didn't lose."

Richard looked amused.

"He disappeared."

"He survived."

"Because I allowed him."

The room went silent.

Before I could respond, Laura entered.

"Richard Whitmore."

He turned.

She held up a warrant.

"You are under investigation for financial fraud, evidence tampering, and conspiracy."

For the first time...

Richard looked surprised.

Only slightly.

Then he smiled.

"You think paperwork can defeat a family like mine?"

Laura didn't move.

"No."

She looked at him.

"But truth can."

Richard was not arrested that night.

Not yet.

Because powerful people rarely fall immediately.

They fight.

They attack.

They destroy.

The next morning, the battle began.

Whitmore Holdings collapsed overnight.

News channels reported internal corruption.

Investors panicked.

Board members turned against each other.

The empire that had looked unbreakable for generations began cracking.

And then came the final attack.

A public announcement.

Richard released a statement accusing me.

"Emma Carter is attempting to destroy the Whitmore family for personal financial gain."

The world turned against me again.

The same story.

The same game.

Different day.

But this time...

I wasn't alone.

Daniel stood beside me.

Not behind his mother.

Not behind his family.

Beside me.

At the press conference, reporters shouted questions.

"Mrs. Whitmore, are you trying to steal the company?"

"Did you manipulate Daniel?"

"Is this revenge?"

I looked at the cameras.

The same cameras that once showed my humiliation.

And I spoke.

"My entire life, people told me I had no family."

The room became quiet.

"They were wrong."

"My family was taken from me."

A pause.

"But I am not here to take anything back."

I looked directly into the cameras.

"I am here to return what was stolen."

The next day, a new document appeared.

An old inheritance agreement.

Verified.

Legal.

Signed by Arthur Whitmore himself.

The document stated:

The Carter family is the rightful owner of the original Whitmore estate holdings.

The world finally saw the truth.

The Whitmore empire had been built on stolen ground.

But Richard was not finished.

That night, Daniel received a message.

From his father.

Only one sentence.

You should have chosen your family.

Then another message arrived.

A photograph.

My father.

Thomas Carter.

Tied to a chair.

Alive.

My blood ran cold.

Daniel looked at me.

Fear returned to his eyes.

Because we both understood.

The battle for the Whitmore empire was not over.

It had only changed.

The battlefield was no longer the courtroom.

It was personal.

Richard Whitmore had lost his power.

So he had taken something else.

Something more valuable.

May you like

He had taken my father.
