Chapter 11: The Price of an Heir

Chapter 11: The Price of an Heir

The courtroom exploded into chaos.

"Father Michael is alive?"

Reporters rushed toward the courtroom doors before deputies forced them back. Flashbulbs lit the room as journalists shouted questions that no one could answer.

Judge Eleanor Hayes slammed her gavel repeatedly.

"Order!"

When the room finally fell silent, Captain Daniel Brooks turned to the deputy.

"Where is Father Michael now?"

"Under protective custody, sir."

"And Sabrina?"

"Also in custody."

Brooks frowned.

"She surrendered willingly?"

"Yes."

"Did she say why?"

The deputy nodded.

"She said she's tired of running."

No one believed that.

Least of all Brooks.

Two hours later, Father Michael entered the courtroom under heavy police escort.

He looked thinner.

His left arm was bandaged.

Fresh bruises covered his face.

But he was alive.

The moment Ethan saw him, he stood.

"Father..."

The old priest smiled weakly.

"I'm sorry, my son."

"I should have told you everything years ago."

Ethan's voice trembled.

"Tell me now."

After taking the oath, Father Michael looked around the courtroom.

His tired eyes rested on Lily for several long seconds.

She smiled shyly.

He returned the smile.

Then his expression became solemn.

"What I'm about to say..."

"...will explain why so many people have died."

Silence settled over the room.

"It began nearly thirty years ago."

Captain Brooks leaned forward.

"With whom?"

Father Michael answered quietly.

"Arthur Bennett."

Ethan frowned.

"My grandfather?"

"Yes."

"He created something no one outside the family was supposed to know."

Brooks asked,

"What did he create?"

The priest reached into his coat pocket.

He removed an old leather folder sealed with the Bennett family crest.

"I've kept this hidden since the night Anna disappeared."

The folder was placed before the judge.

Inside was a notarized document.

Its title read:

The Bennett Legacy Trust

Judge Hayes skimmed the first page.

Her expression changed immediately.

"This trust..."

She looked toward Ethan.

"...is worth over two billion dollars."

A wave of murmurs spread through the courtroom.

Father Michael nodded.

"Arthur Bennett established the trust shortly before his death."

Brooks frowned.

"What makes it relevant?"

The priest took a slow breath.

"The inheritance could not pass directly to Ethan."

Ethan stared.

"What?"

"The trust contained a condition."

Father Michael closed his eyes.

"It would transfer only to Arthur Bennett's first biological grandchild."

The room became silent.

Everyone understood at once.

Lily.

Captain Brooks slowly turned toward Ethan.

"If that's true..."

Father Michael finished the thought.

"Then Lily became the legal heir the moment she was born."

Ethan felt the blood drain from his face.

"That's why..."

Brooks nodded.

"Someone wanted her."

Father Michael corrected him.

"No."

"They wanted control of her."

The courtroom doors opened.

Federal financial investigator Laura Kim entered carrying several thick binders.

"Captain Brooks."

She placed the binders on the evidence table.

"We traced the trust."

Brooks looked up.

"And?"

"It has been quietly manipulated for years."

She opened the first binder.

"Millions of dollars disappeared through shell companies."

Judge Hayes frowned.

"Who benefited?"

Laura turned another page.

"Not Ethan."

"Not Lily."

"Not Anna."

She paused.

"The money ultimately flowed into a private investment group."

Brooks asked,

"Name?"

She answered.

Blackwood Holdings.

Officer Ramirez immediately searched the name.

His eyes widened.

"Captain."

"What?"

"The company doesn't officially exist."

"No address."

"No employees."

"No public records."

Brooks looked toward Father Michael.

"You've heard of it."

The priest nodded.

"I wish I hadn't."

Father Michael explained.

"Blackwood Holdings wasn't just laundering money."

"It financed Project Echo."

The courtroom fell silent again.

Brooks asked carefully,

"What exactly was Project Echo?"

The priest hesitated.

Then answered.

"It was never about Lily."

Confused murmurs spread through the gallery.

"What do you mean?"

"It was about memory."

Ethan's heart skipped a beat.

"My accident."

Father Michael nodded.

"They wanted you alive."

"But obedient."

Brooks frowned.

"They erased his memories?"

"They tried."

"Why?"

"Because Ethan discovered the truth before the accident."

Silence.

Brooks slowly asked,

"What truth?"

Father Michael looked directly at Ethan.

"You discovered that someone inside your own family was stealing from the trust."

Ethan searched his memories.

Nothing.

Only fragments.

Numbers.

Arguments.

A signature.

A black car.

Then darkness.

Laura Kim interrupted.

"We also recovered deleted financial records."

She handed Brooks another report.

"The transfers began one month before Lily's birth."

Brooks studied the documents.

"They accelerated after Anna disappeared."

Laura nodded.

"And stopped the day Ethan's accident was reported."

Judge Hayes leaned forward.

"So whoever controlled the trust..."

"...believed Ethan would never remember."

Father Michael answered softly.

"Exactly."

Across the courtroom, Sabrina sat silently beside her attorney.

She had listened without interruption.

Without emotion.

Until Father Michael looked directly at her.

"You weren't the mastermind."

Sabrina slowly lifted her eyes.

"No."

"You were only following orders."

A long silence followed.

Then...

To everyone's surprise...

Sabrina nodded.

"Yes."

Gasps echoed throughout the courtroom.

Her attorney stared at her in disbelief.

"Sabrina..."

She ignored him.

Captain Brooks stepped closer.

"Whose orders?"

She remained silent.

Brooks tried again.

"Who is the Director?"

Sabrina laughed bitterly.

"You still think that's one person."

The room fell silent.

"What?"

"The Director..."

She smiled sadly.

"...isn't a name."

Brooks frowned.

"What is it?"

"It's a title."

A chill swept through the courtroom.

"There has always been a Director."

"When one dies..."

"Another takes the position."

"They protect the trust."

"They protect Project Echo."

"And they remove anyone who becomes a threat."

Ethan whispered,

"Anna..."

Sabrina nodded.

"She became a threat."

"Grace?"

Another nod.

"So did she."

Captain Brooks felt the case expanding far beyond one family.

"This organization..."

"How large is it?"

Sabrina answered quietly.

"Larger than you can imagine."

Before Brooks could continue, Officer Ramirez rushed into the courtroom carrying his laptop.

"Captain!"

"What now?"

"We opened the safe-deposit box."

Brooks looked surprised.

"The key?"

Ramirez nodded.

"It worked."

"And?"

He turned the screen toward Brooks.

Inside the safe had been only one flash drive.

Its contents had just been decrypted.

The first folder was titled:

DIRECTOR SUCCESSION

The second:

PROJECT ECHO SUBJECTS

The third:

BENNETT HEIRS

Brooks clicked the last folder.

One document opened.

At the top was Lily's name.

Below it...

A single line highlighted in red.

Status: Eliminate before inheritance transfer.

The courtroom fell into horrified silence.

Someone had officially ordered Lily's murder.

Then Ramirez opened the final file.

His face lost all color.

"Captain..."

"What?"

"There's another name."

"Who?"

Ramirez looked slowly toward Ethan.

"...yours."

Brooks frowned.

"What does it say?"

Ramirez swallowed.

"Status..."

"...Memory recovery no longer acceptable."

He looked up.

"The order was updated yesterday."

Silence.

Then he finished reading.
