Chapter 8: The Woman Who Wasn't Her Mother

Chapter 8: The Woman Who Wasn't Her Mother
The wind howled through the Bennett family cemetery as Captain Daniel Brooks stood before the weathered angel statue.
The stone figure, its wings darkened by eight years of rain and moss, looked as though it had been silently guarding a secret.
At Brooks' feet lay a rusted iron box.
Inside it, exactly where Anna's journal had promised, were two things.
An old iron key.
And a sealed envelope addressed in elegant handwriting.
To Ethan Bennett.
The paper had yellowed with age, but the wax seal remained intact.
Brooks hesitated.
Eight years.
Anna had hidden this letter eight years ago.
As if she had known no one would find it until now.
He carefully broke the seal.
Back at the Bennett mansion, Ethan refused to leave the operations room.
Maps covered the walls.
Police officers tracked possible escape routes.
Helicopters searched nearby forests.
Every passing hour without news of Lily felt unbearable.
His phone rang.
Captain Brooks.
"Ethan."
"Did you find something?"
"Yes."
There was a pause.
"I think you should hear this yourself."
Brooks placed the letter on speaker and began reading.
Ethan,
If you are hearing these words, then Lily has already been taken.
I'm sorry. I tried to stop this future, but I wasn't strong enough.
Please don't blame yourself. They were always going to come for her.
Ethan closed his eyes.
Anna's voice echoed in his imagination.
Brooks continued.
You may already believe I am Lily's mother.
I loved her with all my heart.
I raised her from the moment she opened her eyes.
But I must finally tell you the truth...
The room became silent.
Even the officers stopped moving.
Brooks swallowed before reading the next line.
I did not give birth to Lily.
Ethan felt as though the floor had disappeared beneath him.
"No..."
Brooks continued.
She was placed into my arms only hours after she was born.
The woman who gave birth to her begged me to protect her.
She knew they would never stop searching.
Officer Ramirez exchanged a stunned glance with Brooks.
Anna had been telling the truth all along.
The letter continued.
I cannot write the mother's name.
If anyone else finds this letter, she will die.
Even writing these words places us all in danger.
Ethan clenched his fists.
"So she knew."
Brooks nodded.
"She was protecting someone."
Meanwhile...
Inside the moving black van, Lily stared quietly out the window.
Hours had passed.
No one had harmed her.
No one had tied her hands.
The scarred man finally spoke.
"My name is Gabriel."
Lily didn't answer.
The woman beside him offered her a sandwich.
She shook her head.
"I want Ethan."
Gabriel sighed.
"So do we."
Lily frowned.
"What?"
"We're trying to bring him to us."
She didn't understand.
The van finally stopped at an abandoned mountain lodge hidden deep within the forest.
The kidnappers hurried Lily inside.
The cabin was old but clean.
There were blankets.
Food.
Medical supplies.
It didn't look like a prison.
It looked...
Prepared.
Almost as though someone had expected a child to arrive.
Gabriel knelt before Lily.
"I need you to trust me."
"I don't."
"I know."
He reached into his pocket.
Slowly.
Carefully.
He removed an old photograph.
Lily looked down.
Her eyes widened.
The picture showed baby Lily.
Anna.
And another woman.
The woman's face had been torn away.
Only her hand remained visible.
Holding Lily.
Around her wrist...
Was a bracelet identical to the one Lily still wore.
At the mansion, Captain Brooks finished reading the letter.
The final pages contained detailed instructions.
The iron key opens a safe-deposit box.
The box contains proof that Ethan was never supposed to lose his memory.
Someone arranged the accident.
Ethan's breathing became uneven.
Brooks slowly lowered the pages.
"That confirms it."
"The crash wasn't random."
But there was more.
Brooks unfolded the final page.
The handwriting became hurried.
Uneven.
As though Anna had been running out of time.
There is one person you must never trust completely.
Not Sabrina.
You already know about her.
I'm talking about someone who wears a badge.
Silence.
Every police officer in the room looked at one another.
Brooks read the final sentence.
He has been feeding them information for years.
Officer Ramirez instinctively looked around the room.
Someone inside law enforcement had betrayed them.
At that very moment...
Gabriel entered a locked room inside the mountain lodge.
An elderly woman sat waiting beside the fireplace.
Her silver hair framed a face marked by years of sorrow.
She looked toward the sleeping Lily through a half-open door.
"She looks just like him."
Gabriel nodded.
"More every year."
The woman wiped away a tear.
"Does Ethan know?"
"Not yet."
"He deserves the truth."
"He'll have it soon."
She looked into the fire.
"I never wanted any of this."
Gabriel remained silent.
Finally, the woman whispered,
"I should have taken her myself."
Meanwhile...
Captain Brooks received another call from the forensic laboratory.
"Captain."
"What now?"
"We finished enhancing the old camcorder audio."
Brooks straightened.
"Did you identify the voice outside Anna's house?"
"Not conclusively."
"But we isolated another voice."
"What did it say?"
The technician hesitated.
"You'll want to hear it."
Seconds later, the cleaned audio played through Brooks' phone.
Static.
Footsteps.
Anna crying.
Then a man's voice.
Soft.
Urgent.
Almost hidden beneath the noise.
Take the baby. Save her. I'll hold them off.
Ethan stopped breathing.
"That's me."
The technician answered quietly.
"Yes."
"We're confident it is."
Another crash echoed in the recording.
Then...
One final female voice.
Weak.
Barely audible.
Not Anna.
Someone else.
Only four words.
Tell her... I tried...
The recording ended.
Ethan stared blankly ahead.
"There was another woman."
Brooks nodded slowly.
"And she was alive during the attack."
Officer Ramirez looked at the DNA report again.
"Ethan..."
"What?"
"If Anna wasn't Lily's biological mother..."
"And another woman was there that night..."
He hesitated.
"Maybe..."
"...the woman who gave birth to Lily never disappeared."
Hours later...
The mountain lodge fell silent.
Everyone slept.
Except Lily.
She quietly climbed out of bed.
The cabin door wasn't locked.
She tiptoed into the hallway.
Voices drifted from the next room.
She recognized Gabriel's voice.
Another belonged to the elderly woman.
Lily carefully peeked through the cracked doorway.
The woman held the torn photograph.
Her hands trembled.
"I've waited seven years to see her again."
Gabriel lowered his voice.
"Eight."
She smiled sadly.
"It still feels like yesterday."
Lily leaned a little closer.
Then she heard the words that froze her in place.
The elderly woman whispered,
"When Ethan learns that his wife helped separate him from Lily's real mother..."
She closed her eyes.
"...I'm afraid he'll never forgive himself."
Lily accidentally stepped on a loose floorboard.
Creaaak.
Both adults turned toward the door.
Their eyes met.
The elderly woman's face filled with tears.
She took one trembling step forward and whispered,
"Lily..."
May you like
"...do you remember me?"
