Chapter 9: Desperate Moves

Chapter 9: Desperate Moves

The old floorboard creaked.

Silence swallowed the cabin.

Lily stood frozen in the doorway, her small hands clutching the edge of her oversized sweater. The elderly woman stared at her with tears streaming down her face.

"Lily..." she whispered again.

"...do you remember me?"

Lily blinked.

She searched the woman's face.

The gentle eyes.

The silver hair.

The trembling smile.

Something deep inside her stirred.

Not a memory.

A feeling.

Safe.

Warm.

But before she could answer, Gabriel stepped between them.

"Margaret."

The woman looked at him.

"You're moving too fast."

Margaret lowered her gaze, wiping away her tears.

"I know."

Gabriel knelt in front of Lily.

"I'm sorry you heard that."

Lily's voice was barely audible.

"Who is she?"

Gabriel hesitated.

"Someone who has loved you for a very long time."

"Is she my grandma?"

Margaret's lips trembled.

"I wish I could answer that."

Lily frowned.

"Why won't anyone tell me the truth?"

No one had an answer.

Back at the Bennett mansion, dawn broke over another sleepless night.

Captain Brooks stood before a wall covered with photographs, timelines, and evidence.

Anna Carter.

The mysterious accident.

Father Michael's disappearance.

The journal.

The kidnapping.

The unknown "Director."

And now...

A possible traitor inside law enforcement.

Every thread led to a larger conspiracy.

Officer Ramirez entered carrying fresh coffee.

"We traced the van."

Brooks looked up.

"And?"

"It was stolen three days ago."

"No prints?"

"Wiped clean."

Brooks sighed.

"They're professionals."

Ramirez nodded.

"But professionals make mistakes too."

He placed another report on the table.

"The glove."

Brooks opened it.

His expression changed.

"The DNA?"

"It belongs to a former Special Forces soldier."

"Name?"

"Gabriel Ross."

Brooks recognized it immediately.

"He disappeared seven years ago."

Ramirez nodded.

"Officially declared dead."

At the county jail, Sabrina had barely slept.

The news of Lily's kidnapping had spread through every television in the facility.

The moment she heard it...

She laughed.

Not loudly.

Not hysterically.

Quietly.

As if something had gone exactly according to plan.

The female guard frowned.

"What's so funny?"

Sabrina smiled.

"You still think I'm the dangerous one."

The guard ignored her.

Minutes later, Sabrina requested another phone call.

Denied.

Then another.

Denied again.

By noon, she had become increasingly agitated.

She paced her cell.

Muttering under her breath.

"They moved too soon..."

"They weren't supposed to..."

"No..."

One of the guards called the prison psychologist.

Something wasn't right.

That afternoon, Captain Brooks arrived to question her again.

The moment she saw him, Sabrina slammed both hands against the glass.

"You idiot!"

Brooks remained calm.

"You seem upset."

"You let them take her!"

"You knew this was coming?"

She froze.

Only for a second.

Then she laughed.

"I warned you."

Brooks stepped closer.

"Who took Lily?"

"I don't know."

"You know exactly who."

"No."

"You called them 'they.'"

Sabrina's breathing became uneven.

"I said too much."

"You've been saying too much from the beginning."

Brooks opened Anna's journal on the table.

Sabrina's face immediately darkened.

"You found it."

"Yes."

"And the letter?"

"Yes."

For the first time...

Real panic appeared in her eyes.

"No..."

Brooks noticed.

"Why are you afraid of the letter?"

She shook her head violently.

"You shouldn't have read it."

"Why?"

"Because now..."

Her voice cracked.

"...he knows."

"Who?"

"Ethan."

"What does he know?"

She closed her eyes.

"Enough."

Brooks remained silent.

Sometimes silence forced people to keep talking.

It worked.

Sabrina whispered,

"He was never supposed to remember."

The detective's heart skipped a beat.

"Remember what?"

She slowly looked up.

"The night everything ended."

Before Brooks could ask another question, the alarm suddenly blared throughout the jail.

EMERGENCY LOCKDOWN.

Red lights flashed in every corridor.

Guards shouted.

"Inmates back!"

The prison doors automatically sealed.

Brooks frowned.

"What happened?"

No one knew.

Then...

The lights went out.

For exactly twelve seconds...

The entire jail was plunged into darkness.

When the emergency generators restored power—

Sabrina's cell was empty.

The handcuffs lay on the floor.

The surveillance camera had been spray-painted black.

One unconscious guard lay nearby.

Brooks rushed inside.

"Seal every exit!"

The warden ran toward him.

"Too late."

"What do you mean?"

"Someone hacked the security system."

Outside...

A prison transport van sped away from the facility.

No sirens.

No markings.

Inside...

Sabrina sat opposite a man wearing black tactical clothing.

He handed her a small backpack.

"You have one chance."

She opened it.

Inside were a passport.

Cash.

A pistol.

And a single sheet of paper.

One address.

She frowned.

"Where is she?"

The man answered calmly.

"You'll find out."

Sabrina looked up.

"You kidnapped Lily without permission."

The man's expression remained cold.

"We adapted."

"No."

"You made a mistake."

He leaned forward.

"The mistake was leaving you alive."

For a split second...

Sabrina looked genuinely frightened.

Then the man smiled.

"Relax."

"The Director still has plans for you."

Miles away, Ethan refused to leave the search command center.

Every hour without Lily felt unbearable.

He replayed the old camcorder video again.

And again.

Searching for details everyone else had missed.

On the seventh viewing...

He noticed something.

The camera briefly captured a wall calendar.

The date.

June 14.

He froze.

"Captain."

Brooks looked over.

"What?"

"The journal's last entry."

"What about it?"

"It was also dated June 14."

Brooks frowned.

"So?"

"The attack happened that same night."

He pointed toward the video.

"Anna had enough time to write the entry..."

"...hide the journal..."

"...bury the key..."

"...and record the video."

Silence.

Brooks slowly realized what Ethan meant.

"She knew they were coming."

Ethan nodded.

"She wasn't surprised."

"She was waiting."

Officer Ramirez suddenly burst into the room.

"Captain!"

"What now?"

"Sabrina escaped."

The room fell silent.

Ethan stood abruptly.

"What?"

"Less than thirty minutes ago."

Brooks cursed under his breath.

"How?"

"We don't know."

Ethan's face hardened.

"She's going after Lily."

Brooks nodded grimly.

"So are we."

Meanwhile...

Deep in the mountains...

Gabriel received a radio transmission.

His expression changed immediately.

Margaret noticed.

"What happened?"

He lowered the radio.

"Sabrina escaped."

The color drained from Margaret's face.

"No..."

Gabriel looked toward Lily's room.

"We have to move."

Lily was gathering her few belongings when she noticed Margaret staring out the window.

"Are we leaving?"

Margaret forced a smile.

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because someone dangerous is coming."

Lily thought for a moment.

"Sabrina?"

Margaret didn't answer.

She didn't need to.

As the convoy prepared to leave the cabin, Gabriel performed one last sweep of the area.

Everything appeared quiet.

Too quiet.

He looked toward the treeline.

A glint.

Sunlight reflecting off a rifle scope.

"DOWN!"

The first shot shattered the cabin window.

Glass exploded across the room.

Everyone dove for cover.

More gunfire erupted from the forest.

Bullets ripped through the wooden walls.

Gabriel returned fire.

"Move Lily!"

Margaret grabbed the terrified child.

Outside...

A lone figure stepped from the trees.

Holding a pistol.

Hair blowing in the wind.

Eyes burning with fury.

Sabrina.

She smiled as she raised her weapon.

May you like

"I've finally found you."
