Chapter 6: Echoes of the Truth

Chapter 6: Echoes of the Truth
The words from the DNA report hung over the room like a storm cloud.
Ethan Bennett is Lily's biological father.
But the second finding was even more unsettling.
Anna Carter may not be Lily's biological mother.
No one spoke.
Lily looked from Ethan to Captain Brooks, unable to understand why every adult suddenly looked frightened.
Finally, she broke the silence.
"Did I do something wrong?"
Ethan immediately knelt in front of her.
"No, sweetheart."
"Then... why is everyone looking at me?"
He gently brushed a strand of hair away from her face.
"They're trying to understand what happened a long time ago."
She tilted her head.
"Before I was born?"
Ethan forced a smile.
"Yes."
She nodded as if that answered everything.
Children often accepted mysteries that adults could not.
Later that night, the mansion was unusually quiet.
Police officers guarded every entrance.
Additional patrol cars circled the estate after Sabrina's warning that "they" would come for Lily.
Captain Brooks had no intention of taking chances.
Ethan stood in the hallway outside Lily's bedroom.
Mrs. Harper approached quietly.
"She finally fell asleep."
He glanced through the half-open door.
Lily hugged the stuffed rabbit tightly, her tiny face peaceful for the first time since the nightmare began.
"I'll protect her," Ethan whispered.
Mrs. Harper smiled sadly.
"I believe you."
"But you must first learn what you're protecting her from."
The next morning, Captain Brooks returned with a search warrant covering every inch of the Bennett estate.
"We missed something," he said.
"I can feel it."
Forensic teams spread through the mansion again.
Walls were scanned.
Floors were measured.
Every locked cabinet was opened.
Hours passed.
Nothing.
Until Officer Ramirez called from the attic.
"Captain!"
Brooks hurried upstairs.
Ramirez stood beside an old wooden trunk hidden beneath dusty furniture.
"I found this behind a false wall."
The trunk was covered with years of dust.
Its brass lock had rusted shut.
Brooks nodded toward a technician.
"Open it carefully."
The lock snapped with a loud crack.
Inside...
There were no jewels.
No money.
Only a faded leather journal.
A stack of old VHS tapes.
A small digital camcorder wrapped in cloth.
And a baby blanket embroidered with two words.
Little Star.
Ethan froze.
His heart pounded.
He had seen those words before.
In his dreams.
In Dr. Collins' notes.
In Lily's memories.
Captain Brooks carefully picked up the journal.
The leather cover was worn and stained.
No name appeared on the front.
He opened the first page.
Elegant handwriting filled the paper.
The first sentence made everyone stop breathing.
If you are reading this, then I have already failed to protect her.
Silence.
Brooks slowly continued.
March 3
Ethan doesn't know they're watching us.
He believes everything is over.
But they never stop.
Ethan stared at the page.
"That's Anna's handwriting?"
"We'll confirm it," Brooks replied.
He turned another page.
March 18
Sabrina smiled today.
She acted kind.
But I caught her searching Lily's room while Ethan was away.
She thinks I don't notice.
Mrs. Harper covered her mouth.
"Oh, my God..."
Page after page revealed a woman living in fear.
Anna described being followed.
Receiving anonymous phone calls.
Finding threatening letters.
Most chilling of all...
She repeatedly mentioned someone she called only "The Director."
Never a name.
Never a description.
Only two words.
He knows everything.
Captain Brooks frowned.
"Who is the Director?"
No one answered.
Then Ethan noticed something tucked between two pages.
A folded photograph.
He unfolded it slowly.
It showed himself and Anna standing outside Saint Gabriel Chapel.
She was visibly pregnant.
His arm rested protectively around her shoulders.
On the back of the photo, written in blue ink:
One week before everything changed.
Ethan's knees nearly gave out.
"This..."
"...can't be real."
Captain Brooks looked at him carefully.
"Do you remember now?"
Ethan squeezed his eyes shut.
For an instant—
Church bells.
Sunlight.
Anna laughing.
A promise.
"No matter what happens... I'll protect both of you."
Then the memory vanished.
Leaving only another splitting headache.
Meanwhile, Officer Ramirez examined the old camcorder.
"The battery's dead."
"Can we recover it?" Brooks asked.
The forensic technician nodded.
"If the storage survived."
They hurried to the mobile forensic unit parked outside.
Within an hour...
The camera powered on.
Everyone gathered around the monitor.
The screen flickered.
Static.
Then...
A woman appeared.
Anna.
She looked exhausted.
Her hair was tied back carelessly.
Dark circles framed her eyes.
But she smiled warmly into the camera.
"If you're watching this..."
She hesitated.
"...then something happened to me."
The room fell completely silent.
Anna looked directly into the lens.
"Ethan..."
"If this reaches you..."
"I need you to remember."
Tears filled Ethan's eyes.
She knew the recording was for him.
Anna continued.
"I don't know how much they'll erase."
Captain Brooks exchanged a glance with Ramirez.
Erase?
"You've been having headaches."
"You've been forgetting things."
"It isn't an accident."
Ethan's breathing quickened.
Anna knew.
Years before.
She reached toward the camera and lifted a tiny baby into view.
The little girl giggled happily.
Only a few months old.
A silver bracelet gleamed around her tiny wrist.
Lily.
Everyone recognized her immediately.
Anna kissed the baby's forehead.
"You are loved more than you'll ever know."
The baby laughed again.
Then...
She reached toward someone standing behind the camera.
Tiny arms stretching.
A man's voice answered softly.
"I'm here, Little Star."
The room froze.
Every eye slowly turned toward Ethan.
His face had gone completely pale.
"That..."
He whispered.
"...that's my voice."
The video continued.
Anna smiled toward the unseen cameraman.
"She likes you more than me."
A man's laugh echoed.
"I doubt that."
"No..."
Anna teased.
"You're definitely her favorite."
Lily giggled again.
The man behind the camera lifted her.
Although his face never appeared...
His reflection briefly flashed in a nearby mirror.
It was Ethan.
Holding baby Lily.
Smiling.
Happy.
A father.
Tears rolled down Ethan's cheeks.
"I remember..."
Everyone looked at him.
Only fragments returned.
The warmth of Lily in his arms.
Anna's laughter.
The smell of fresh rain outside the chapel.
He collapsed into a chair.
"I remember her laugh."
Captain Brooks placed a hand on his shoulder.
"It's coming back."
Suddenly...
The recording glitched.
The image shook violently.
Anna looked toward a window.
Her smile disappeared.
"Ethan..."
she whispered urgently.
"They're here."
The man behind the camera turned.
Heavy footsteps echoed downstairs.
Someone began pounding on the front door.
Anna grabbed the camera.
"If anything happens..."
She looked directly into the lens.
"Never trust Sabrina."
The pounding grew louder.
A man's voice shouted from outside.
"Open the door!"
Anna gasped.
"No..."
She clutched Lily tightly.
The camera fell sideways.
The image tilted toward the floor.
Only voices could be heard now.
Wood splintering.
Glass breaking.
Someone screaming.
Then—
A loud crash.
The video ended.
No one moved.
No one breathed.
Mrs. Harper quietly wiped away tears.
Officer Ramirez looked visibly shaken.
Captain Brooks replayed the final thirty seconds three times.
Each time, he noticed another detail.
The male voice outside the house.
Calm.
Controlled.
Authoritative.
Not shouting in panic.
Giving orders.
"Open the door."
Not "Police."
Not "Help."
Simply...
"Open the door."
Brooks turned to the forensic audio specialist.
"Can you enhance the recording?"
"We'll try."
"What I need most..."
He pointed to the speaker.
"...is that man's voice."
As the team prepared the equipment, Ethan quietly opened the journal again.
Most pages were filled with Anna's handwriting.
But near the end...
The writing changed.
It became rushed.
Uneven.
As if written in fear.
The final entry read:
June 14
Ethan still doesn't remember.
Sabrina says the treatment worked.
She thinks I don't know what they did to him.
Father Michael promised to hide Lily if anything happened.
If you're reading this...
Don't believe anyone who tells you I abandoned my daughter.
I would die before leaving her.
Trust the key beneath the angel.
It opens everything.
There was no more writing.
Only a dark brown stain across the bottom of the page.
Blood.
Captain Brooks frowned.
"Beneath the angel..."
Mrs. Harper suddenly looked up.
"The angel."
Everyone turned toward her.
She looked frightened.
"There used to be an angel statue."
"Where?"
"In the Bennett family cemetery."
Silence filled the attic.
Captain Brooks slowly closed the journal.
"If Anna left something beneath that statue..."
He looked toward Ethan.
"...it may finally tell us who has been hunting your family."
Far away, inside the county jail, Sabrina sat alone in her cell.
A guard approached.
"You have a visitor."
Sabrina smiled.
"I was wondering when he'd come."
She followed the guard into the visitation room.
On the opposite side of the glass sat a man in an expensive black suit.
His face remained hidden beneath the brim of a dark hat.
He picked up the phone.
Without greeting her, he asked one question.
"Did they find the journal?"
Sabrina's smile slowly faded.
"...Yes."
The man's expression did not change.
"Then Phase Two begins."

The line went dead.
