Chapter 5: A Battle for Lily

Chapter 5: A Battle for Lily

The handwritten note refused to leave Captain Brooks' mind.

Patient repeatedly asks for his daughter despite claiming he has no children.

He read it again.

And again.

The ink had faded over the years, but the words still carried the weight of a forgotten truth.

Dr. Collins closed the medical file and folded his hands.

"I knew this day would come."

Brooks looked up.

"Tell me everything."

The elderly neurologist let out a slow breath.

"When Ethan regained consciousness after the accident, he was severely disoriented."

"He remembered his name?"

"Yes."

"His business?"

"Mostly."

"His family?"

"Partially."

Brooks nodded.

"And Anna Carter?"

Dr. Collins shook his head.

"Never."

"But the strange part wasn't what he forgot."

"It was what he remembered."

Brooks frowned.

"What do you mean?"

"The first words he spoke after waking up were..."

The doctor paused.

"'Where's my little star?'"

Captain Brooks felt a chill crawl up his spine.

"Little Star..."

Dr. Collins nodded.

"He repeated it every day."

"He begged us to save his daughter."

"But whenever we asked who she was..."

"He couldn't answer."

Miles away, Ethan sat alone in his study.

The words echoed inside his head.

Little Star.

Lily had said the same nickname.

A nickname no one should have known.

He closed his eyes.

For a split second—

A memory flashed.

Tiny fingers wrapped around his thumb.

A baby's laughter.

A woman's voice whispering,

"She has your eyes."

Then darkness.

The memory vanished as quickly as it had appeared.

Ethan slammed his fist onto the desk in frustration.

"Damn it!"

The pain in his head returned immediately.

A knock came at the door.

Officer Ramirez entered with an uneasy expression.

"Mr. Bennett."

"What is it?"

"You need to come downstairs."

"Why?"

"Someone from Child Protective Services is here."

The living room had become unusually crowded.

Captain Brooks had returned.

Two CPS investigators sat across from Lily, speaking gently while Mrs. Harper remained beside her.

Another woman stood near the fireplace holding a leather briefcase.

She introduced herself before Ethan could speak.

"Mr. Bennett."

"My name is Victoria Lang."

"I'm attorney for Mrs. Sabrina Bennett."

The room fell silent.

Brooks' eyes narrowed.

"What is she doing here?"

Victoria smiled professionally.

"My client has instructed me to file an emergency petition for temporary custody of Lily."

Ethan stared in disbelief.

"What?"

"Mrs. Bennett claims the child has lived under her care for several years."

Captain Brooks interrupted.

"Your client was arrested for attacking that child."

"Allegedly."

"There are witnesses."

"There has not yet been a conviction."

Brooks' jaw tightened.

Victoria calmly opened her briefcase.

"My client also provided evidence."

She placed several folders on the coffee table.

Birth records.

Medical reports.

School enrollment forms.

Vaccination history.

Dozens of official-looking documents.

Every single one listed the same guardian.

Sabrina Bennett.

Mrs. Harper gasped.

"That's impossible."

Ethan grabbed the nearest file.

Each document appeared authentic.

Dates.

Official seals.

Signatures.

Everything looked legitimate.

Lily quietly hid behind Ethan.

"What's happening?"

He forced himself to smile.

"Nothing."

But inside...

His confidence began to crack.

Captain Brooks examined the paperwork.

"These records didn't exist yesterday."

Victoria nodded.

"They were located overnight."

"Where?"

"My client had them stored securely."

Brooks looked at her sharply.

"Convenient."

She simply smiled.

The CPS investigator, Karen Mitchell, cleared her throat.

"Our responsibility is the child's welfare."

She looked toward Ethan.

"At this moment, we have two competing claims."

"You have none," Ethan replied.

"I'm keeping her safe."

Karen remained calm.

"We're not accusing you."

"But legally, we must determine who has custody."

Captain Brooks stepped forward.

"Sabrina Bennett is under investigation for attempted murder."

Karen nodded.

"I understand."

"But until a court rules otherwise..."

"Documentation matters."

Brooks looked back at the stack of files.

Something felt wrong.

Very wrong.

Lily tugged gently on Ethan's sleeve.

"Ethan?"

He knelt.

"Yes?"

"Am I leaving?"

His heart broke.

"No."

"Promise?"

He hesitated.

Only for a second.

"I promise."

Captain Brooks noticed.

Promises made in fear rarely survived the courtroom.

Later that afternoon, the emergency custody hearing was scheduled.

Because of the severity of the allegations, the judge agreed to hear the matter immediately.

Sabrina appeared through video conference from county jail.

She wore plain clothing and looked exhausted.

Yet when the camera turned on...

She smiled.

Exactly as though she had expected this.

Judge Eleanor Hayes reviewed the documents.

"Mrs. Bennett claims she has raised the child since infancy."

Sabrina nodded.

"Yes, Your Honor."

"And Mr. Bennett?"

"I didn't know Lily existed until yesterday."

The judge turned toward Ethan.

"Is that true?"

"Yes."

Sabrina immediately spoke.

"He rarely came home."

Brooks frowned.

"Objection."

"This isn't a criminal trial."

The judge nodded.

"Sustained."

Sabrina lowered her eyes.

"I only wanted to protect her."

Ethan couldn't believe what he was hearing.

"Protect her?"

"You attacked her."

"I panicked."

"You tried to kill her!"

"I was disciplining a child who had become violent."

Karen Mitchell stepped forward.

"Your Honor..."

"The documents submitted by Mrs. Bennett appear complete."

Captain Brooks interrupted.

"We believe they're fabricated."

Judge Hayes looked at him.

"Do you have proof?"

Brooks remained silent.

Not yet.

Then Sabrina played her strongest card.

She looked directly at Ethan through the courtroom monitor.

"You don't remember because of your accident."

The courtroom became silent.

"You left everything to me."

"You couldn't even remember birthdays."

"You forgot entire conversations."

She lowered her head dramatically.

"I protected this family while you rebuilt your life."

Ethan felt dozens of eyes turn toward him.

Even Karen Mitchell looked uncertain.

For the first time...

Ethan questioned himself.

Could Sabrina have cared for Lily while he remained unaware?

Could his memory loss explain everything?

The doubt was brief.

But Sabrina saw it.

And smiled.

Meanwhile...

Officer Ramirez sat in the police evidence room examining Sabrina's documents.

The paper felt unusually new.

The ink smelled fresh.

He picked up one medical record.

Something caught his attention.

The hospital logo.

It looked...

Slightly different.

He immediately called Captain Brooks.

"Sir."

"What is it?"

"I think we have something."

Within minutes, Brooks rushed to the evidence room.

Ramirez laid three documents side by side.

"Look closely."

Brooks frowned.

"The logos?"

"They've changed."

"What do you mean?"

"This hospital updated its logo four years ago."

He pointed toward Lily's supposed vaccination record.

"This document is dated seven years ago."

"But it uses the new logo."

Silence.

Brooks slowly smiled.

"They're fake."

He wasn't satisfied.

"I want every document verified."

Within hours...

The truth began unraveling.

The pediatrician whose signature appeared on Lily's records—

Had retired two years before the documents were supposedly signed.

The elementary school listed on her enrollment—

Had never heard of Lily.

The vaccination barcode—

Belonged to another child entirely.

One by one...

Every document collapsed.

Captain Brooks immediately rushed back to court.

The hearing had just resumed.

He approached the judge.

"Your Honor."

"I have newly discovered evidence."

Judge Hayes examined the forensic report.

Five minutes passed.

Then ten.

The courtroom remained silent.

Finally...

She looked toward Sabrina.

"Mrs. Bennett."

"Yes?"

"The custody documents you submitted..."

She paused.

"...appear to have been falsified."

Sabrina's face froze.

"My attorney—"

Victoria quickly interrupted.

"I received these documents directly from my client."

Judge Hayes narrowed her eyes.

"Then both of you may have serious legal problems."

Victoria's confidence disappeared.

She turned toward Sabrina.

"You told me they were authentic."

Sabrina whispered,

"They were supposed to be."

Captain Brooks caught the phrase immediately.

"Supposed to be?"

Sabrina realized her mistake.

Again.

Too late.

The judge struck her gavel.

"The emergency custody petition is denied."

She looked toward Karen Mitchell.

"Given the ongoing criminal investigation, the child will remain under temporary protective supervision."

Then she turned to Ethan.

"Mr. Bennett."

"Yes, Your Honor."

"Until paternity is determined..."

"You may continue serving as Lily's temporary guardian under police protection."

Lily smiled for the first time all day.

She ran toward Ethan.

He knelt and hugged her tightly.

"It's okay."

"We're going home."

Sabrina watched them from the courtroom monitor.

Her expression hardened into pure hatred.

As officers prepared to disconnect the video feed, she suddenly laughed.

A slow...

Quiet...

Terrifying laugh.

Captain Brooks stepped closer.

"What is it?"

She looked directly at him.

"You think proving the papers are fake means you've won?"

"No."

"It means you've lost."

Brooks frowned.

"What are you talking about?"

Sabrina leaned toward the camera.

"You've been looking in the wrong place."

The screen went black.

That evening, as everyone returned to the mansion, Officer Ramirez received an urgent phone call from the forensic laboratory.

His face immediately turned pale.

He looked at Captain Brooks.

"Sir..."

"What happened?"

"The DNA comparison is complete."

Brooks straightened.

"And?"

Ramirez swallowed hard.

"The results confirm that Ethan Bennett is Lily's biological father."

Ethan stood frozen.

The room fell silent.

Lily looked up at him, confused.

"What does that mean?"

Before anyone could answer...

Another sentence came from Ramirez.

"And there's something else."

Brooks frowned.

"What?"

"The DNA doesn't match Anna Carter as completely as expected."

Silence.

"What are you saying?"

Ramirez slowly lowered the report.

"It suggests..."

"...Anna may not be Lily's biological mother."

The room fell into stunned silence.

Every assumption they had made over the past three days suddenly collapsed.

Somewhere...

Someone had lied.

May you like

Again.
