Chapter 14: Sabrina's Final Confession
The gunshot echoed through the underground archive.
Sabrina collapsed to the concrete floor, clutching her bleeding shoulder. Lily screamed and ran toward Ethan, who caught her in his arms just as Captain Brooks and the SWAT team stormed into the room.
"Police! Drop the weapon!"
The Director fired twice before disappearing through a hidden steel door. A thick blast door slammed shut behind him.
Officer Ramirez rushed forward.
"The exit is sealed!"
Captain Brooks cursed.
"Find another way! He can't get far!"
Half the team pursued the Director through the maze of underground tunnels while the others secured the archive.
Ethan knelt beside Sabrina.
Blood stained her black blouse, but the wound wasn't immediately fatal.
She looked up at him with tired, tear-filled eyes.

"I finally did one thing right."

"We didn't even know who the mother was."
Brooks frowned.
"Grace."

"She disappeared before we could reach her."
"So Anna stepped in."
Ethan whispered.
Sabrina looked at him.
"Anna volunteered."
Everyone in the room stared.

"Anna knew Grace was being hunted."
"She begged Father Michael to let her protect the baby."
"So the world would believe Lily was Anna's daughter."
Margaret quietly wiped away tears.

Sabrina nodded.
"You always knew."
Ethan's voice trembled.
"Did Anna betray me?"
Sabrina immediately shook her head.

"Never."
"She loved you."
"She loved Lily."
"She died protecting both of you."
The words struck Ethan like a hammer.

He had believed Anna had abandoned him.

Captain Brooks continued.
"The accident."
"Were you involved?"
Sabrina hesitated.

"I drugged Ethan before he left the house."
Ethan closed his eyes.

She looked at the floor.

"Without questions."
"So they staged the crash."

Sabrina began crying uncontrollably.
"I never wanted her to die."
Ethan stared at her.
"Did you kill her?"
"No."
"I swear."
"Then what happened?"
Sabrina looked toward Father Michael.
"You should tell him."
The old priest slowly shook his head.
"No."
"It has to come from you."
She took a deep breath.
"The night of the attack..."
"Grace wasn't killed."
The room became perfectly still.
"I watched the Director's men drag her away."
Ethan's heartbeat thundered in his ears.
"They said..."
"...she was too valuable to eliminate."
Brooks leaned closer.
"Valuable how?"
Sabrina answered,
"She knew where Arthur Bennett hid the final inheritance documents."
Laura Kim looked up from the financial files.
"There were missing documents."
Father Michael nodded.
"The trust was incomplete."
Sabrina continued.
"The Director believed Grace had memorized the final access codes."
"So..."
"They imprisoned her."
"For eight years."
Ethan could barely breathe.
"She's alive."
Sabrina nodded slowly.
"If she survived..."
"Yes."
Captain Brooks asked the question everyone feared.
"Where?"
Sabrina looked toward the steel door through which the Director had escaped.
"Below us."
Everyone frowned.
"What?"
"There is another level."
"Sublevel Four."
Brooks looked at David's blueprints.
"They only showed three."
"They never trusted David completely."
Sabrina coughed violently.
Blood appeared on her lips.
The medic checked her pulse.
"We're losing her."
She pushed him away.
"Not yet."
She reached weakly into her jacket.
"I took this..."
"...before I surrendered."
She handed Brooks a small encrypted access card.
"The Director carries two."
"This is the backup."
Brooks examined it.
A black raven was engraved on its surface.
"It opens Sublevel Four."
Sabrina looked at Lily one final time.
"I'm sorry I frightened you."
Lily hesitated.
Then quietly asked,
"Did you ever love me?"
The question shattered everyone in the room.
Sabrina's tears flowed freely.
"I wasn't supposed to."
"But..."
She smiled through the pain.
"I did."
"I just loved the wrong people more."
Lily slowly walked toward her.
Ethan instinctively reached out to stop her.
Lily gently pulled away.
She knelt beside Sabrina.

She hugged her.
Very softly.
"I forgive you."
Sabrina stared in disbelief.
She had expected fear.

Not forgiveness.
Her body began to shake with silent sobs.
"I don't deserve that."

Lily answered honestly.
"But Ethan says..."

Ethan lowered his head.

He barely remembered them.

She looked directly at Ethan.

Sabrina whispered her final confession.

She lifted one trembling finger.
Pointing toward someone standing inside the room.

Margaret.
Mrs. Harper.
The SWAT officers.
The paramedics.
Sabrina's finger stopped.
Her lips parted to reveal the name.

A single suppressed gunshot echoed through the archive.
The bullet shattered the light above her bed.
A second bullet struck Sabrina in the chest.
She gasped.
Blood spread rapidly across her clothes.
Captain Brooks shouted,
"Sniper!"
Officers rushed to cover.
Ethan caught Sabrina as she collapsed.
She struggled to speak one last time.
Only one word escaped her lips.
"...Trust..."
Her eyes lost focus.
Her hand slipped from Ethan's.
