Chapter 10 – The Final Recording

The gunshot was still echoing in Claire’s mind.

Even after the lights came back.

Even after she realized she was still standing.

Even after she saw the empty doorway where her father had been.

The sound remained.

A reminder that every time she got close to the truth, someone tried to take it away.

Claire stood frozen in the old Vale family house.

The photograph was still in her hand.

The one that should not exist.

The one that proved someone had been watching her life long before she understood there was a game being played.

The image showed three people.

Claire.

Ethan.

And Eleanor.

Together.

Years ago.

Before Claire returned.

Before Ethan admitted his secrets.

Before Eleanor revealed pieces of the truth.

But there was one impossible detail.

The photograph had been taken after Claire disappeared.

Her fingers tightened around it.

"How?"

Behind her, Detective Mason rushed into the room.

"Claire!"

He grabbed her shoulder.

"Are you hurt?"

She barely heard him.

"Ethan."

The detective looked around.

"Where is Ethan?"

Claire turned.

Her heart sank.

Because she suddenly realized something.

Ethan had followed her.

Or at least...

He had been nearby.

"He was here."

Detective Mason frowned.

"Who?"

"Ethan."

The detective looked confused.

"Claire, Ethan never came with us."

Her blood went cold.

"What?"

"I called him after you disappeared from your apartment."

The detective looked at her.

"He said he was still trying to find the person who stole the evidence."

Claire stared at him.

"No."

Because that wasn't possible.

She had seen Ethan.

She had spoken to him.

He had stood beside her.

Unless...

The person who came with her wasn't Ethan.

The realization hit harder than the gunshot.

Someone had been pretending to be him.

An hour later, the house was surrounded.

Police searched every room.

But Alexander was gone.

Again.

"How does someone disappear from a locked house?"

Claire asked.

Detective Mason didn't answer.

Because they both knew.

Someone had planned everything.

Then an officer found something.

"Detective!"

Everyone turned.

The officer held a small device.

A digital recorder.

"It was hidden under the desk."

Claire stared.

Another recording.

Another secret.

"No."

She whispered.

"Not another one."

Detective Mason looked at her.

"Claire."

She shook her head.

"Every recording I find changes my entire life."

But she still reached for it.

Because fear was no longer stronger than curiosity.

Not anymore.

They pressed play.

Static.

Then...

Alexander's voice.

"Claire."

Her eyes filled immediately.

Her father.

Again.

"If you are hearing this, it means things went wrong."

A pause.

"I hoped you would never need this recording."

Claire sat down.

Her legs suddenly weak.

"I know you have questions."

Alexander continued.

"I know you feel betrayed."

A broken breath escaped Claire.

Because he was right.

"I know you think I abandoned you."

Silence.

"But I need you to understand."

The recording crackled.

"I never left because I stopped loving you."

Claire closed her eyes.

"I left because someone was trying to kill you."

Everyone in the room went silent.

Alexander continued.

"When I discovered the truth about your birth, I realized Claire was never just my daughter."

A pause.

"She was evidence."

Claire opened her eyes.

Evidence.

The word again.

"What does that mean?"

She whispered.

The recording answered.

"Your biological parents were not killed because of money."

A pause.

"They were killed because they discovered something."

Detective Mason leaned forward.

"What?"

Alexander's voice became quieter.

"A system."

Nobody moved.

"A network of powerful people who controlled businesses, politics, and information."

Claire felt cold.

"Your biological parents wanted to expose them."

The recording continued.

"When they were killed, I found you."

Claire touched her chest.

"You were only a baby."

A pause.

"I wanted to protect you."

The recording became distorted.

Then:

"But someone betrayed me."

Claire looked at Detective Mason.

"Who?"

Alexander answered.

"The person I trusted with your safety."

The room became silent.

Then the name came.

"Eleanor."

Claire closed her eyes.

Of course.

The answer she expected.

The answer that still hurt.

But then Alexander continued.

"However..."

Everyone froze.

"Eleanor was not the person who ordered it."

Claire opened her eyes.

"What?"

Alexander's voice trembled.

"She was following someone else's orders."

Detective Mason looked shocked.

"Who?"

The recording paused.

Almost like Alexander was struggling to say the name.

Then:

"Richard Vale."

Claire felt the room spin.

Her uncle.

The man who claimed Eleanor was guilty.

The man who claimed he wanted justice.

The man who had acted like an ally.

The real enemy.

The recording continued.

"Richard wanted control of everything."

"He wanted the company."

"He wanted the inheritance."

"He wanted the Vale name."

A pause.

"But most importantly..."

"He wanted Claire gone."

Claire covered her mouth.

"Why?"

Alexander's voice became softer.

"Because Claire was the only person who could destroy him."

The recording stopped.

Everyone looked at Claire.

Then the device restarted.

A second hidden file.

This one was labeled:

FINAL MESSAGE

Claire hesitated.

Detective Mason looked at her.

"Are you sure?"

No.

She wasn't.

But she pressed play.

This time...

A different voice.

Her mother.

Claire immediately started crying.

"My dear Claire..."

Her mother's voice was weak.

Like she had recorded it near the end.

"I know Alexander told you some of the truth."

A pause.

"But there is one thing he couldn't tell you."

Claire held her breath.

"Because he didn't know."

The room became still.

"Claire..."

Her mother whispered:

"Richard is not your uncle."

Claire froze.

"What?"

"He is not Alexander's brother."

The recording continued.

"He changed his identity."

A pause.

"He entered our family because he wanted something."

Claire stared.

"What?"

Her mother's voice broke.

"You."

The tape crackled.

"Richard was searching for you before you were born."

Claire felt dizzy.

"Why?"

Then came the sentence that changed everything.

"Because Claire..."

"You are the last surviving member of the family that created the system he wants to control."

Silence.

Nobody understood.

Not yet.

Then the recording ended.

Claire sat there.

Completely still.

Her entire life had been stolen.

Her identity.

Her family.

Her history.

But now she finally understood one thing.

Eleanor wasn't the beginning of the story.

Richard wasn't the beginning either.

Something much bigger had been happening.

Later that night, Ethan finally arrived.

The moment Claire saw him, anger replaced confusion.

"Where were you?"

Ethan stopped.

"I was trying to find you."

Claire laughed.

"No."

She held up the photograph.

"You were already here."

Ethan looked at the picture.

His face changed.

"Claire..."

"Tell me the truth."

Silence.

"Did you know about Richard?"

Ethan looked away.

That was enough.

Claire stepped back.

"You knew."

"I suspected."

"Everyone suspects."

Her voice broke.

"But nobody tells me."

Ethan looked desperate.

"I was trying to protect you."

Claire shook her head.

"That sentence has destroyed my entire life."

He had no answer.

Then Detective Mason's phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed.

"What?"

A pause.

"Are you sure?"

He looked at Claire.

"We found Richard."

Everyone froze.

"Where?"

The detective lowered the phone.

"At the old Vale cemetery."

Claire's heart raced.

"Why there?"

The detective looked at her.

"Because someone dug up Alexander Vale's grave."

Silence.

Then the detective added:

"And they found something inside."

"What?"

He looked at Claire.

"A second body."

Nobody spoke.

Because suddenly the biggest question was no longer:

Where is Alexander Vale?

It was:

Who was buried in his place for twenty years?

And somewhere far away...

Richard Vale watched the news.

He smiled.

Because Claire had finally found the final recording.

But she still didn't know the most important truth.

The person who had protected her all these years...

Was not her father.

It was someone much closer.

May you like

Someone she had already trusted.

Someone who had been lying from the beginning.
