Chapter 8 – The Enemy Inside

The problem with the truth was that it never arrived alone.
It brought questions.
It brought doubt.
It brought memories that suddenly changed meaning.
And for Claire Bennett, every answer she discovered seemed to destroy something she once believed.
Richard Vale's words followed her long after he left.
"Eleanor was protecting you."
Claire hated those words.
Not because they were impossible.
Because some small part of her wondered if they were true.
She sat alone in her father's old office.
The same office where Alexander Vale had made decisions that shaped an entire company.
The same office where he had hidden secrets.
The same office where Claire had discovered that her entire identity was connected to a war she never knew existed.
Ethan entered quietly.
He immediately noticed her expression.
"You talked to Richard."
Claire didn't look up.
"You knew about him."
Ethan stopped.
A mistake.
A tiny pause.
But Claire saw it.
"Of course you did."
"Claire..."
"How many more things?"
Her voice was tired.
"How many more things do you know that I don't?"
Ethan walked closer.
"Not everything is a betrayal."
Claire looked at him.
"Isn't it?"
A pause.
"Everyone keeps deciding what I can handle."
Ethan lowered his eyes.
Because he knew she was right.
"Richard is dangerous."
Claire frowned.
"Why?"
"Because he knows how to manipulate people."
She almost laughed.
"That sounds familiar."
Ethan accepted the accusation.
"Yes."
A pause.
"But Richard is different."
"How?"
"He doesn't pretend to care."
Claire looked back at the documents.
"He said Eleanor protected me."
Ethan became quiet.
Claire noticed.
"What?"
"I don't know if that's true."
"But you believe it is possible."
Another silence.
That was becoming their new language.
"I need to know what happened that night."
Claire whispered.
"The night my father disappeared."
Ethan nodded.
"Then we find out."
But they were not the only ones searching.
At the Eleanor Estate, Eleanor stood in the hidden room.
The room she had spent years trying to forget.
The room where Alexander had hidden evidence.
The room where Claire had found the first pieces of the truth.
She touched the old wooden desk.
"You were always better at hiding things than I expected."
Her voice was quiet.
Almost sad.
A voice came from behind her.
"You should have destroyed everything."
Eleanor turned.
Richard.
Her expression immediately changed.
"You shouldn't be here."
Richard smiled.
"Still giving orders."
"You don't control this anymore."
Richard walked deeper into the room.
"You never did."
Eleanor's eyes narrowed.
"Careful."
"Or what?"
He smiled.
"You'll threaten me like you threatened everyone else?"
The tension between them was obvious.
They were not allies.
They were two people who had been trapped in the same secret.
"You lied to Claire."
Richard said.
Eleanor remained silent.
"So did you."
Richard laughed.
"The difference is I admit it."
Eleanor looked at him.
"You killed Alexander."
"No."
"Then why are you afraid of her finding the truth?"
Richard's smile disappeared.
Because Eleanor had touched the one thing he feared.
"You don't understand what Claire is."
Richard said.
Eleanor stared.
"She's a person."
"No."
His voice became colder.
"She's the last piece."
Eleanor's face changed.
"Don't say that."
"Why?"
"Because she is not a piece of your game."
For the first time...
Richard looked surprised.
"You actually care about her."
Eleanor looked away.
"I made mistakes."
A pause.
"But I never wanted her dead."
Richard smiled.
"That's your weakness."
Meanwhile, Claire discovered something unexpected.
A hidden account.
Created under her father's company.
The account contained only one transaction.
A payment made twenty years ago.
To a private investigator.
The name on the payment shocked her.
Eleanor Gray.
Claire stared.
"Eleanor paid to investigate my father?"
Ethan looked at the document.
"Why would she do that?"
Claire shook her head.
"I don't know."
Then another file opened.
The investigation report.
The final page.
The page no one had seen.
Subject: Alexander Vale
Conclusion: Subject discovered illegal activity within his own family.
Claire stopped breathing.
Illegal activity.
Within his own family.
The next line was worse.
Primary suspect: Richard Vale.
Claire looked at Ethan.
"My uncle."
Ethan nodded slowly.
The pieces began connecting.
Richard wanted the inheritance.
Richard wanted control.
Richard had access.
Richard was there the night Alexander disappeared.
But something still didn't make sense.
"Why did Eleanor help him?"
Ethan looked at her.
"Maybe she didn't."
Claire froze.
"What?"
"Maybe Eleanor wasn't working with Richard."
A pause.
"Maybe she was trying to stop him."
That possibility was terrifying.
Because it meant Claire had spent years hating the wrong person.
But before she could think further...
Her phone rang.
Unknown number.
Claire answered.
No one spoke.
Then a recording played.
Eleanor's voice.
"Claire."
A pause.
"If you hear this, it means I failed."
Claire froze.
It was an old recording.
"I know you hate me."
Eleanor continued.
"And maybe you should."
Ethan looked shocked.
"I made choices that hurt you."
"I lied."
"I manipulated."
Claire held her breath.
"But I did one thing right."
Static.
Then:
"I kept you alive."
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Then a message appeared on Claire's phone.
A new text.
YOU ARE LOOKING FOR AN ENEMY.
YOU ARE LOOKING IN THE WRONG PLACE.
Claire stared.
Another message appeared.
THE ENEMY HAS BEEN BESIDE YOU THE ENTIRE TIME.
Her blood ran cold.
She slowly turned toward Ethan.
Because the message wasn't accusing Eleanor.
It wasn't accusing Richard.
It said:
Beside you.
Ethan noticed her expression.
"What?"
Claire didn't answer.
Because suddenly every secret came back.
The documents.
The hidden files.
The things Ethan knew.
The things he never told her.
"Ethan..."
His face changed.
"Claire."
"Who sent this?"
Silence.
Then Ethan's phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
And Claire saw his expression.
Fear.
Not surprise.
Not confusion.
Fear.
"Who is it?"
Ethan didn't answer.
Claire stood.
"Ethan."
Slowly, he turned the phone toward her.
The caller ID showed one name.
Alexander Vale.
Claire froze.
"That's impossible."
Ethan whispered:
"I know."
Because Alexander Vale had been dead for twenty years.
The call continued.
Ethan answered.
Nobody spoke.
Then a voice came through.
A voice both of them recognized.
"Hello, Claire."
Her heart stopped.
Her father's voice.
Alive.
"Did you really think the dead couldn't come back?"
The line went silent.
Claire looked at Ethan.
The world she knew collapsed again.
Because the biggest secret was no longer who betrayed her.
The biggest secret was this:
Her father was alive.
And if Alexander Vale had been alive all this time...
May you like
Then someone else had died in his place.
And someone had spent twenty years making sure Claire never discovered the truth.
