Chapter 9 – The Stolen Evidence

The voice on the phone disappeared.
But Claire could still hear it.
Over and over again.
A voice she had spent twenty years mourning.
A voice she had buried.
A voice she thought belonged only to memories.
"Hello, Claire."
Her father's voice.
Alive.
For several minutes, nobody moved.
Ethan stood frozen, still holding the phone.
Claire stared at him, waiting for him to explain.
Waiting for him to say it was a mistake.
A trick.
A recording.
Anything.
But Ethan said nothing.
And that frightened her more than the voice itself.
"Say something."
Her voice was barely a whisper.
Ethan looked at her.
"I don't know how."
Claire laughed bitterly.
"That's impossible."
A pause.
"Everyone always knows something."
She took a step back.
"My father has been dead for twenty years."
Ethan nodded slowly.
"I know."
"Then how was he calling you?"
Ethan looked at the phone.
"I don't know."
That answer was becoming the most painful sentence in Claire's life.
They replayed the call.
Again.
And again.
The recording was clear.
No distortion.
No mistake.
The voice was unmistakable.
Detective Mason arrived thirty minutes later.
When Ethan explained what happened, the detective immediately took the phone.
He examined the call log.
His expression changed.
"What?"
Claire asked.
Detective Mason looked up.
"This call wasn't made from a normal number."
"What does that mean?"
"It was routed through multiple systems."
"Can you trace it?"
The detective hesitated.
"Someone wanted us to find it."
Claire frowned.
"What?"
"If someone wanted to hide a call, they could have."
A pause.
"This person wanted you to know they were here."
The room became colder.
"Why now?"
Claire whispered.
Why wait twenty years?
Why reveal himself now?
Nobody had an answer.
Then Detective Mason noticed something.
The call had not only come to Ethan's phone.
It had also transferred a file.
A single document.
ALEXANDER VALE – FINAL STATEMENT
Claire's hands shook.
"Open it."
Ethan hesitated.
"Claire..."
"Open it."
The file loaded.
A scanned document appeared.
At the top was her father's handwriting.
If you are reading this, I am either dead...
A pause.
Or I have been forced to disappear.
Claire stopped breathing.
The document continued.
There are people who want control of what I built.
They will use money.
They will use fear.
They will use the people closest to me.
Claire looked at Ethan.
The words felt familiar.
Almost like a warning.
Then the next sentence appeared.
The person I trusted most betrayed me.
A name followed.
But before Claire could read it...
The screen went black.
"What happened?"
Ethan checked the device.
"The file was deleted."
Claire stared.
"No."
Detective Mason looked at the phone.
"Someone accessed it remotely."
The evidence had disappeared.
Again.
Claire closed her eyes.
It was happening again.
Every time she got close to the truth...
Someone erased it.
But this time was different.
Because someone had stolen the evidence while they were watching.
"The person who sent this file knew exactly what we would do."
Ethan said.
Claire looked at him.
"Meaning?"
"They wanted us to see part of it."
A pause.
"Not all of it."
Claire understood.
The file wasn't proof.
It was a message.
A warning.
The next morning, the investigation suffered another blow.
Detective Mason arrived at Claire's apartment with bad news.
"The evidence from the hidden room is gone."
Claire froze.
"What?"
"The documents."
"The recordings."
"Your mother's letters."
Everything.
"Someone broke into police storage?"
Mason nodded.
"No signs of forced entry."
Claire stared.
"Someone inside helped them."
The detective didn't deny it.
The stolen evidence meant one thing.
The enemy wasn't just powerful.
They had access.
Someone close.
Someone trusted.
Someone inside the investigation.
And Claire immediately thought of one person.
"Ethan."
The word came out before she could stop it.
Ethan looked hurt.
Not angry.
Hurt.
"Claire."
"I didn't say I think you did it."
"But you thought it."
She looked away.
Because she couldn't deny it.
Ethan had secrets.
He had lied.
He had hidden information.
And now evidence connected to the case was missing.
"I need time."
Claire whispered.
Ethan nodded.
Slowly.
"I understand."
He walked away.
And for the first time since returning...
Claire watched him leave.
That evening, Claire received another visitor.
Margaret.
But this time...
She wasn't alone.
A young woman stood beside her.
Someone Claire had never seen before.
"This is Sofia."
Margaret said.
"She worked for your father."
Claire looked at Sofia.
"Why are you here?"
Sofia looked nervous.
"Because I have something you need."
She handed Claire a small envelope.
"Your father gave this to me before he disappeared."
Claire stared.
"Why didn't you give it to me before?"
Sofia looked down.
"Because I was told not to."
"By who?"
Sofia didn't answer.
She didn't need to.
Claire already knew.
"Eleanor."
Sofia nodded.
Claire opened the envelope.
Inside was a small key.
And a note.
Claire,
Trust no one who tells you they protected you.
Protection and control often look the same.
Claire stared.
Below the message was an address.
A location she recognized.
The old Vale family house.
The house that was supposed to have burned down twenty years ago.
"Why would my father send me there?"
Sofia whispered:
"Because that's where the truth was hidden."
Before Claire could respond, her phone rang.
Unknown number.
Again.
She answered.
No greeting.
No introduction.
Only one sentence.
"Claire, if you want to know what happened to your father, come alone."
Her heart raced.
"Who is this?"
Silence.
Then:
"The person who saved him."
The call ended.
Claire looked at the address.
The old family house.
The missing evidence.
The stolen documents.
The mysterious caller.
Everything was pulling her toward the same place.
But Ethan's warning returned to her.
"Richard is dangerous."
And Eleanor's warning.
"Your biological family is not innocent."
For the first time, Claire understood something terrifying.
The enemy was not outside her life.
The enemy had been inside it from the beginning.
That night, Claire went to the old Vale house.
Alone.
The building stood abandoned.
Broken windows.
Dead gardens.
A place forgotten by everyone.
But when Claire entered...
She saw lights.
Someone was already inside.
She slowly walked through the hallway.
Every photograph on the wall showed her family.
Her parents.
Her childhood.
Her stolen life.
Then she reached the old study.
On the desk was a folder.
With her name.
CLAIRE BENNETT
She opened it.
Inside were photographs.
Reports.
Medical records.
Everything about her life.
But one document made her stop.
A DNA test.
Her hands trembled.
The result:
Claire Bennett is not biologically related to Alexander Vale.
She stared.
Again.
Another identity destroyed.
Then she heard footsteps behind her.
"Looking for answers?"
Claire turned.
A man stood in the doorway.
Older.
Tired.
Familiar.
Her father.
Alexander Vale.
Alive.
Claire couldn't speak.
He looked at her with tears in his eyes.
"Claire..."
She stepped back.
"Why?"
A lifetime of pain filled that one word.
"Why did you leave me?"
Alexander looked broken.
"Because I thought it was the only way to keep you alive."
Claire shook her head.
"No."
Her voice cracked.
"You let me believe you were dead."
"I know."
"You let me hate you."
"I know."
"You let me suffer."
Alexander closed his eyes.
"I know."
A long silence.
Then Claire asked the question that had haunted her for years.
"Who killed my family?"
Alexander looked toward the darkness behind her.
His expression changed.
Fear.
Real fear.
Then he whispered:
"The person who stole the evidence."
Claire froze.
"What?"
Alexander stepped closer.
"Claire..."
"The person who erased the truth."
A pause.
"The person standing closest to you."
Claire's blood ran cold.
Because suddenly she understood.
The enemy inside wasn't just someone from the past.
The enemy was someone who had been beside her all along.
And before she could ask another question...
The lights went out.
A gunshot echoed through the house.
Claire screamed.
When the lights returned...
Alexander was gone.
And on the floor...
Was another stolen piece of evidence.
A photograph.
A photograph of Claire.
Ethan.
And Eleanor.
Taken years before Claire ever knew Ethan existed.
