Chapter 7 – The Family Betrayal

Claire spent the entire night awake.
The file Eleanor gave her sat on the table.
Untouched.
Waiting.
Like a monster hiding behind a closed door.
She had spent her whole life searching for the truth about her family.
Now that she had found pieces of it...
She wished she could go back to not knowing.
Subject protected.
Identity erased.
Family must never know she survived.
Those words were burned into her mind.
Who was she?
Why had someone tried to erase her existence?
And why had everyone around her spent years protecting a secret she never knew existed?
At sunrise, Ethan found her sitting on the floor surrounded by documents.
He didn't ask if she slept.
He already knew the answer.
"You found something."
Claire looked up.
Her eyes were exhausted.
"I found out my entire life was built on secrets."
Ethan slowly entered the room.
"Claire..."
"No."
She shook her head.
"Don't tell me everything will be okay."
A pause.
"Because it isn't."
Ethan sat across from her.
"What did Eleanor show you?"
Claire pushed the file toward him.
He opened it.
The moment he saw the documents, his expression changed.
"You know these names?"
Claire noticed.
"You recognize them."
Ethan looked away.
"Some of them."
"Who are they?"
He hesitated.
That hesitation was enough.
Claire laughed softly.
"Of course."
She stood.
"Another secret."
"Claire, listen to me."
"No."
Her voice became sharper.
"Everyone keeps saying that."
"Listen."
"Trust me."
"Believe me."
She looked at him.
"And every time I do..."
Her voice broke.
"I lose something."
Ethan had no answer.
Because he knew she was right.
Later that day, Claire and Ethan went to meet Detective Mason.
The detective had spent the night investigating the documents Eleanor provided.
When Claire entered his office, he immediately knew something had happened.
"You found out."
Claire looked at him.
"Everyone keeps saying that."
A pause.
"What exactly did I find out?"
Detective Mason placed several files on the table.
"Your adoption records."
Claire froze.
"My mother was telling the truth."
"Yes."
"Then who were my biological parents?"
The detective was silent.
Too silent.
Claire noticed.
"You know."
He looked at her.
"Yes."
"Then tell me."
The detective opened a folder.
Inside was a photograph.
A man.
A woman.
And a baby.
Claire.
"Their names were Alexander and Victoria Vale."
Claire frowned.
"Vale?"
The name felt familiar.
Too familiar.
Detective Mason continued.
"The Vale family was one of the most powerful families in the country."
"Then why was I hidden?"
The detective looked at her.
"Because your biological parents were killed."
Claire went still.
"How?"
"Officially?"
A pause.
"An accident."
Claire immediately understood.
"And unofficially?"
Detective Mason looked at Ethan.
Then back at Claire.
"They were murdered."
The room became silent.
"By who?"
Nobody answered immediately.
Then Detective Mason said:
"We believe someone close to them was responsible."
Claire's heart sank.
"Who?"
The detective placed another photograph on the table.
A family gathering.
The Vale family.
Many people.
One face stood out.
Eleanor.
Claire stared.
"What?"
Detective Mason sighed.
"Eleanor Gray was connected to the Vale family."
Everything stopped.
"No."
Claire shook her head.
"That doesn't make sense."
"It does."
"No."
Her voice became louder.
"My entire life, she acted like she hated my family."
Detective Mason looked at her.
"Sometimes hatred is easier to hide than loyalty."
Claire stepped back.
Because suddenly every memory looked different.
Every conversation.
Every argument.
Every lie.
Eleanor hadn't just entered her life by accident.
She had always been connected to it.
"Why would she help my parents then destroy them?"
Detective Mason answered:
"Because she wanted what they had."
"The company?"
"Partly."
"The inheritance?"
"Partly."
"Then what?"
The detective looked at the documents.
"You."
Claire felt sick.
Meanwhile, Eleanor sat in her mansion watching the news.
The investigation was getting closer.
Too close.
Her phone rang.
She answered.
"You failed."
A man's voice.
Eleanor's expression hardened.
"I handled it."
"No."
The voice was cold.
"You lost control."
Eleanor looked toward the photograph of Claire.
"She is more stubborn than expected."
"She is more dangerous than expected."
A pause.
"Do you remember why we hid her?"
Eleanor's eyes narrowed.
"Yes."
"Then remember what happens if she finds everything."
The call ended.
Eleanor remained still.
For the first time...
She looked afraid.
That evening, Claire returned to the old mansion.
Not the Eleanor Estate.
Her father's old company headquarters.
The place she had inherited but never controlled.
The building was enormous.
Modern.
Powerful.
A symbol of everything her father built.
And everything taken from her.
The employees watched as she entered.
Some recognized her.
Others whispered.
"The missing daughter."
"The heir."
"The woman who came back."
Claire ignored them.
She was no longer running from the story.
She was facing it.
Inside the executive office, she found something waiting.
A file.
With her name.
She opened it.
Inside were records from twenty years ago.
Employee reports.
Financial transfers.
Security footage.
And one document that made her freeze.
A resignation letter.
Signed by:
Alexander Vale.
Her biological father.
The date was one week before his death.
Claire read the first sentence.
"If anything happens to me, it was not an accident."
Her hands shook.
The next line:
"The person responsible is someone my family trusts."
Claire continued.
"I made one mistake."
"I believed blood meant loyalty."
A tear fell onto the paper.
Then the final sentence:
"Protect Claire from her family."
Claire looked up.
Her family.
Not Eleanor.
Not strangers.
Her family.
A sound came from behind her.
She turned.
Nobody.
Then a voice came from the doorway.
"You should have left when you had the chance."
Claire froze.
A man stepped into the room.
Older.
Powerful.
Familiar.
The same man from the photograph.
The man who had been standing behind her parents.
Claire whispered:
"Who are you?"
The man smiled.
"My name is Richard Vale."
Her blood turned cold.
"Your uncle."
The room went silent.
"My father's brother?"
Richard nodded.
"Yes."
Claire stepped back.
"Why were you there the night my father disappeared?"
Richard smiled.
"Because I was the last person who saw him alive."
The truth hit her like a wave.
"You killed him."
Richard laughed softly.
"No."
A pause.
"But I know who did."
Claire stared.
"Who?"
Richard looked directly into her eyes.
"Eleanor."
The name echoed.
But before Claire could respond, Richard added:
"However..."
He stepped closer.
"There is something you don't know."
"What?"
Richard's expression changed.
"You think Eleanor betrayed your family."
A pause.
"But she was protecting you."
Claire froze.
"What are you talking about?"
Richard smiled.
"The woman you hate..."
"Is the woman who kept you alive."
And with those words...
Everything Claire believed shattered again.
Because the truth was becoming impossible to understand.
Eleanor was the villain.
Eleanor was the protector.
Eleanor was the enemy.
Eleanor was the reason Claire survived.
But one thing was certain.
Someone was lying.
And soon...
Claire would discover who.
May you like
Because the biggest betrayal was not from an enemy.
It was from the person she trusted most.
