Chapter 6 – The Mother’s Last Message

The letter from Claire’s father changed everything.

Again.

Claire had begun to hate that feeling.

The feeling of standing on the edge of a truth she had spent her entire life searching for, only to discover that the truth was darker than the lie.

She had wanted answers.

Now she had too many.

Your greatest enemy may not be the person who tried to destroy you.

It may be the person who gave you life.

Those words followed Claire everywhere.

They followed her when she slept.

They followed her when she woke up.

They followed her when she looked at old photographs of her parents.

Especially her mother.

Her mother had always been the one person Claire believed was innocent.

The one person untouched by Eleanor’s manipulation.

The one person who loved her enough to fight.

But now doubt had entered her heart.

And doubt was dangerous.

Because Eleanor had always known how to use it.

Three days passed after they found the letter.

Three days of searching.

Three days of silence.

Three days of Ethan trying to explain himself.

And three days of Claire keeping him at a distance.

She didn't hate Ethan.

That was the problem.

If she hated him, things would be easier.

But she understood him.

She understood fear.

She understood making the wrong choice because someone more powerful convinced you there was no other option.

Because Claire had spent years doing the same thing.

Surviving.

But understanding someone did not erase the pain they caused.

Ethan found her sitting in her mother's old room.

The room had been untouched for twenty years.

Dust covered the furniture.

The curtains were faded.

But somehow...

It still felt like her.

"You shouldn't be here alone."

Claire didn't look back.

"That's what everyone says."

Ethan stopped.

She continued.

"Don't go there."

"Don't ask questions."

"Don't look too closely."

A pause.

"Everyone always thinks they know what's best for me."

Ethan lowered his eyes.

"I know I don't deserve your trust."

Claire looked at him.

"No."

A pause.

"You don't."

The honesty hurt.

But Ethan accepted it.

"I found something."

Claire became still.

"What?"

Ethan placed a small box on the table.

"I searched through the documents from the hidden room again."

She looked at the box.

"Another secret?"

Ethan gave a sad smile.

"Probably."

Claire opened it.

Inside was an old cassette tape.

No label.

No date.

Nothing.

But on the side, written in faded ink, were two words:

For Claire.

Her heart stopped.

"My mother?"

Ethan nodded.

They found an old player in the room.

The tape was damaged.

The sound was broken.

But it worked.

Static filled the room.

Then...

A voice.

"Claire..."

Claire froze.

Her hands covered her mouth.

Because after all these years...

She heard her mother again.

"My sweet girl..."

Her mother's voice trembled.

"If you are listening to this, something has happened."

A pause.

"I hoped you would never need to hear this."

Claire closed her eyes.

Tears fell silently.

"I wanted to protect you."

Her mother continued.

"But protection became a prison."

The recording cracked.

Then returned.

"Eleanor will tell you many things about me."

"She will tell you I was weak."

"She will tell you I was unstable."

"She will tell you I made mistakes."

A pause.

"Some of those things are true."

Claire opened her eyes.

She wasn't expecting that.

"I was not perfect, Claire."

Her mother's voice broke.

"I made choices I regret."

"But I need you to understand..."

The tape became louder.

"I never stopped loving you."

Claire began crying.

Not the quiet tears she had cried before.

Real pain.

The kind that came from missing someone for too long.

"I know you will want answers."

Her mother continued.

"But before you judge anyone..."

A pause.

"Know that fear changes people."

Ethan looked at Claire.

Neither of them spoke.

"I trusted the wrong person."

The words made Claire freeze.

"I believed someone was helping me."

Her mother's voice became quieter.

"But they were helping Eleanor."

Claire looked at Ethan.

But he shook his head.

Not him.

Someone else.

"I discovered what Eleanor was planning."

The recording continued.

"She wasn't trying to destroy me."

A pause.

"She was trying to control Claire."

Claire felt cold.

"Because Claire is not just my daughter."

Her mother whispered.

"She is the key to everything her father built."

The tape stopped.

Nobody moved.

Then the detective's words came back.

The inheritance.

The company.

The will.

Everything connected to Claire.

The tape started again automatically.

A hidden second recording.

This time, her mother's voice was weaker.

Like she had recorded it later.

"If you hear this second part..."

A pause.

"Then I probably didn't survive."

Claire broke down.

Ethan moved closer.

But she raised a hand.

She needed to hear.

"There is something I never told you."

Her mother whispered.

"Something your father asked me to keep secret."

A long silence.

"Claire..."

"You were adopted."

The world stopped.

Claire stared at the recorder.

No.

Impossible.

"I know this will hurt."

Her mother's voice continued.

"But I need you to understand."

"You were never loved because you were his daughter."

"You were loved because you were you."

Claire couldn't breathe.

"Your father found you when you were a baby."

"He saved you."

"He chose you."

The tears came faster.

"Your biological parents..."

Her mother hesitated.

"That is the truth Eleanor has been hiding."

The tape ended.

Silence.

Complete silence.

Claire sat frozen.

Not because she was angry.

Because she didn't know who she was anymore.

"My whole life..."

Her voice shook.

"My whole life I thought I knew where I came from."

Ethan sat beside her.

"Claire..."

"Who am I?"

He had no answer.

The next morning, Eleanor requested a meeting.

Claire almost refused.

Almost.

But she needed to know.

They met at a private restaurant.

Eleanor arrived exactly on time.

Perfect.

Calm.

Like nothing had happened.

"You heard the message."

Claire stared.

"You knew?"

Eleanor smiled slightly.

"I knew eventually you would."

Claire's hands tightened.

"You knew I was adopted."

"Yes."

"And you never told me."

"No."

"Why?"

Eleanor looked at her.

"Because your parents wanted you to have a normal life."

Claire laughed bitterly.

"Normal?"

A pause.

"You destroyed my life."

Eleanor remained calm.

"I protected you."

Claire stared.

"From what?"

For the first time...

Eleanor looked genuinely serious.

"From the people who created you."

Claire froze.

"Your biological family is not the innocent family you imagine."

Eleanor leaned closer.

"They are dangerous."

"You're lying."

"Am I?"

Eleanor pushed a file across the table.

Inside were documents.

Birth records.

Photographs.

Names.

Claire looked down.

Then stopped.

A name appeared.

A name she recognized.

A name connected to one of the most powerful families in the country.

Eleanor whispered:

"Now you understand."

Claire looked up.

"What?"

Eleanor smiled.

"The reason your father hid you."

Claire stared at the documents.

Her entire identity had changed.

Again.

That night, Claire returned home.

She opened the file.

She looked at the photographs.

At the names.

At the evidence.

Then she saw something that made her blood run cold.

A photograph of a baby.

Her.

On the back was written:

Subject protected.

Identity erased.

Family must never know she survived.

Claire dropped the photograph.

Because suddenly she understood.

Her life had never been a simple family tragedy.

It had been a carefully planned disappearance.

And somewhere in the darkness...

The person who had been watching her opened an old file.

Inside was the original photograph of Claire as a baby.

The same photograph.

But with one difference.

A name.

The name of the person who ordered her disappearance.

The person who had been controlling everything from the beginning.

And for the first time in twenty years...

That person whispered:

May you like

"She finally knows who she is."

"But she still doesn't know who I am."
