Chapter 11 – The Trap

The cemetery was silent.

Too silent.

Claire had always hated places like this.

Not because of the dead.

The dead could not lie.

They could not manipulate.

They could not create stories that destroyed lives.

The dead were honest.

It was the living she feared.

The police lights reflected across the old stone graves.

Rain had started falling again.

Almost like the night everything began.

The night her father disappeared.

The night her life changed forever.

Detective Mason stood beside the opened grave.

His face was pale.

Claire had never seen him look afraid before.

Not during the investigation.

Not when they discovered the hidden rooms.

Not when they uncovered Eleanor's secrets.

But now...

He looked like a man who had found something he wished had remained buried.

"Claire."

His voice was careful.

"You don't have to see this."

She looked at him.

"I spent twenty years believing someone was dead."

A pause.

"I deserve to know who."

The detective nodded.

Slowly.

The workers stepped away.

Claire approached.

Her heart beat faster with every step.

Inside the grave was a coffin.

Old.

Damaged.

But still sealed.

Detective Mason opened the file.

"The burial records say this belongs to Alexander Vale."

Claire looked at the coffin.

"But he's alive."

"Yes."

"Then who is inside?"

Nobody answered.

The coffin was opened.

The world stopped.

Inside was a man.

Older.

Unknown.

But there was something familiar about him.

Claire looked closer.

Then gasped.

The man was wearing a ring.

A family ring.

A Vale family ring.

Detective Mason carefully removed it.

Engraved inside were two letters.

R.V.

Everyone froze.

"Richard."

Claire whispered.

But that was impossible.

Richard Vale was alive.

He had spoken to her.

He had stood in front of her.

He had told her Eleanor was the enemy.

Detective Mason looked at the body.

"The person who has been pretending to be Richard..."

A pause.

"May not be Richard."

Claire felt dizzy.

"Then who was I talking to?"

No one knew.

But everyone knew one thing.

Someone had been wearing another person's identity for years.

And that person was close enough to the family to fool everyone.

At the same time, across the city...

The real Richard Vale opened his eyes.

He was sitting in a dark room.

His hands were tied.

A camera pointed at him.

A man stood in front of him.

The same man who had been using his name.

"You lasted longer than expected."

The fake Richard said.

The real Richard laughed weakly.

"You always were arrogant."

The fake Richard smiled.

"That is why I won."

"You didn't win."

Richard replied.

"You only delayed the truth."

The fake Richard leaned closer.

"No."

A pause.

"I changed the truth."

Back at the cemetery, Claire received a message.

Unknown number.

Again.

COME TO THE OLD VALE HOUSE.

ALONE.

Ethan immediately noticed.

"No."

Claire looked at him.

"You don't even know what it says."

"I know enough."

She showed him.

His expression changed.

"Claire, this is exactly what they want."

"What?"

"They want you angry."

A pause.

"They want you to stop thinking."

Claire stared at the message.

"They've been controlling everything."

"Yes."

"Then I have to stop letting them."

Ethan grabbed her arm.

"Claire."

She looked at him.

"Promise me you won't go alone."

For a moment, she almost said yes.

Almost.

But then she remembered something.

Everyone who protected her had hidden something.

Everyone who loved her had lied.

Everyone who claimed they knew what was best had taken away her choices.

"No."

Ethan looked hurt.

"I can't keep trusting people who decide things for me."

She walked away.

The old Vale house waited in the darkness.

Just like before.

But this time Claire was ready.

She entered slowly.

No fear.

No hesitation.

The door closed behind her.

"Claire."

She turned.

Alexander Vale stood there.

Her father.

For a moment, she forgot everything.

The anger.

The betrayal.

The questions.

She only saw the man she had missed her entire life.

"Why?"

That was all she could say.

Alexander looked broken.

"Because I thought staying away would protect you."

"You don't get to say that anymore."

Her voice trembled.

"You don't get to disappear and call it protection."

He lowered his head.

"I know."

"Where were you?"

Alexander looked toward the window.

"Running."

"From who?"

He answered:

"Everyone."

Claire froze.

"Everyone?"

"Your biological family."

"Richard."

"Eleanor."

"Even people you think are helping you."

Claire narrowed her eyes.

"Are you talking about Ethan?"

Alexander became silent.

And that silence destroyed her.

"You know something about Ethan."

"Claire..."

"Tell me."

Alexander looked at her.

"The night you disappeared..."

A pause.

"Ethan was not the only person who saw what happened."

Claire waited.

"Someone else was there."

"Who?"

Alexander looked toward the hallway.

Before he could answer...

The lights went out.

A sound.

Footsteps.

Then a voice.

"You always were terrible at keeping secrets, Alexander."

Claire froze.

The voice.

She knew it.

Ethan.

But Ethan was not there.

A figure stepped from the darkness.

It looked like him.

Sounded like him.

But Claire knew better now.

A familiar face could hide anything.

The person smiled.

"You finally figured it out."

Claire stepped back.

"Who are you?"

The person slowly removed a mask.

And Claire's blood turned cold.

Because underneath the face she expected...

Was someone else.

Someone she knew.

Someone who had been helping her.

Someone she trusted.

Margaret.

Claire couldn't speak.

"No."

Margaret's eyes filled with sadness.

"I'm sorry."

"Why?"

Margaret looked at Alexander.

Then back at Claire.

"Because I was there the night your father disappeared."

Claire felt the room spin.

"You?"

Margaret nodded.

"And I was the one who helped create the lie."

Silence.

"Why?"

Claire whispered.

Margaret looked devastated.

"Because they had your mother."

Claire froze.

"What?"

Margaret's voice broke.

"They told me if I didn't cooperate..."

A pause.

"They would kill you."

Claire stepped back.

Another betrayal.

Another secret.

Another person who had chosen silence.

But before she could ask more...

The door opened.

Detective Mason rushed inside.

"Claire!"

Everyone turned.

The detective looked at Margaret.

His face changed.

"Impossible."

Claire looked between them.

"You know her?"

Detective Mason slowly nodded.

"Yes."

A terrible feeling entered Claire's chest.

"Who is she?"

The detective whispered:

"Her real name isn't Margaret."

A pause.

"She's Victoria Vale."

Claire stopped breathing.

Her mother's name.

The woman everyone believed was dead.

The woman whose letters she had read.

The woman whose voice she had heard.

Standing alive in front of her.

Claire stared.

"No..."

Victoria looked at her daughter with tears in her eyes.

"I never wanted you to find out this way."

The truth had finally returned.

But it brought the greatest betrayal of all.

Her mother was alive.

And she had been hiding from Claire for twenty years.

Before Claire could speak, every phone in the room received the same message.

One sentence.

THE TRAP HAS BEEN CLOSED.

Then another:

NOW ASK YOUR MOTHER WHY SHE ABANDONED YOU.

Claire looked at Victoria.

And for the first time...

Her mother had no excuse.

Because the woman Claire spent her entire life missing...

May you like

Had been alive the whole time.

And she had chosen not to come back.
