Chapter 10 — Damian's Last Chance

Chapter 10 — Damian's Last Chance

The fire was still burning when Damian realized something was missing.

Not the ledger.

Not the money.

Not even the empire.

A person.

He turned toward the road.

“Where's Marcus?”

Daniel looked around.

“He disappeared before the firefighters arrived.”

Damian shook his head.

“No.”

“What?”

“He didn't disappear.”

Elena watched him.

“You think he planned the fire?”

“I know he did.”

“Why?”

Damian pointed toward the burning Meridian building.

“Because Marcus never destroys anything unless he has already taken what he needs.”

Elena's expression hardened.

“And what did he take?”

Damian looked at Maya.

“I think he took the last piece of the succession plan.”

Maya stood silently beside the ambulance.

She had refused medical treatment.

She kept staring at the flames.

Elena approached her.

“Are you hurt?”

“No.”

“Are you sure?”

Maya nodded.

Then she looked at Elena.

“Did you really burn the ledger?”

“Damian did.”

“Why?”

“Because it was destroying everyone who touched it.”

Maya looked toward the building.

“My mother always said the same thing.”

Elena froze.

“Your mother?”

Maya nodded.

“She told me never to trust a book that knows too much.”

Elena almost smiled.

Then she remembered the recording.

The baby.

The impossible date.

The sister.

“Maya.”

“Yes?”

“Who is your mother?”

Maya looked at her.

“Her name was Amelia.”

Elena's heart stopped.

“My mother?”

“No.”

Maya shook her head.

“Another Amelia.”

Damian heard them.

He walked over.

“What does that mean?”

Maya looked at him.

“My mother's name was Amelia Voss.”

Elena went pale.

“There was another Amelia?”

Maya nodded.

“She told me never to use the Voss name.”

“Why?”

“Because Marcus was looking for it.”

Elena stared.

“How old was she when she died?”

“She didn't die.”

Silence.

“What?”

Maya's voice became quiet.

“She disappeared.”

A firefighter approached.

“Ms. Voss?”

Elena turned.

“We found something.”

He handed her a sealed evidence bag.

Inside was a metal key.

Elena recognized the crown engraving.

The same symbol from the ledger.

“Where did you find this?”

“Under the foundation.”

Daniel took it.

“There shouldn't be anything under that room.”

Damian looked at him.

“There is.”

He took the key.

“I remember.”

Elena stared.

“Remember what?”

“My grandfather's basement.”

They returned to the estate before sunrise.

Nobody spoke during the drive.

Damian sat beside Maya.

He kept looking at her.

Not because he doubted she was his daughter.

Because he couldn't understand how sixteen years had disappeared.

Maya noticed.

“You can ask.”

Damian looked embarrassed.

“Do you hate me?”

She considered the question.

“I don't know you.”

The answer hurt more than anger would have.

Damian nodded.

“That's fair.”

Maya looked out the window.

“But I don't hate you.”

He swallowed.

“Thank you.”

Beneath the estate was an old cellar.

Damian had never seen it opened.

His grandfather had sealed it decades earlier.

The key fit.

The door opened.

A narrow staircase descended into darkness.

Elena turned on her flashlight.

The walls were covered with names.

Not companies.

People.

Hundreds.

Daniel stared.

“This is an archive.”

Damian walked slowly.

At the end of the corridor stood a steel door.

On it was one sentence:

ONLY THE LAST SON MAY ENTER.

Damian stopped.

Elena looked at him.

“Last son?”

He nodded.

“My grandfather had three sons.”

Daniel frowned.

“Only one survived.”

Damian's face changed.

“My father.”

Elena stared.

“Adrian.”

Damian nodded.

“Which means this was meant for him.”

“But you're his son.”

Damian looked at the door.

“Apparently.”

He opened it.

Inside was a small room.

One chair.

One desk.

One video monitor.

And a locked safe.

On the desk sat an envelope.

Damian opened it.

His grandfather's handwriting.

Damian,

If you have reached this room, then Marcus has failed to control you.

Damian stopped.

Elena stepped closer.

The next line was worse.

That means Elena succeeded.

He looked at her.

She stared back.

His grandfather had expected this.

Their entire relationship.

Their conflict.

Their betrayal.

Maybe even their reconciliation.

All of it had been predicted.

Damian continued reading.

Your father believed Marcus was the enemy.

He was wrong.

Elena whispered:

“Then who was?”

Damian turned the page.

Only one word.

Richard.

Damian froze.

“Richard Pierce.”

Daniel frowned.

“Your grandfather?”

“No.”

Damian's face became pale.

“My grandfather was Richard Pierce.”

He looked at Elena.

“But the letter means someone else.”

Elena understood.

“Another Richard.”

The monitor suddenly activated.

Static.

Then a recording appeared.

A man sat in front of the camera.

Elena recognized him.

Richard Pierce.

Damian's grandfather.

He looked directly into the lens.

“If you're watching this, Marcus has told you the story he wants you to believe.”

He paused.

“He will say I built the empire.”

Another pause.

“He will say I betrayed Amelia.”

“He will say I died because I was weak.”

Richard shook his head.

“All of those things are false.”

Damian stepped closer.

“Then what happened?”

The recording answered.

“Marcus did not build the empire.”

Elena stared.

“Then who did?”

Richard looked directly at the camera.

“Amelia.”

Silence.

Damian frowned.

“My grandmother?”

“No.”

Elena whispered:

“My mother.”

Richard continued.

“She designed the first network.”

“She created the succession structure.”

“She recruited Marcus.”

“She recruited me.”

“And she chose Adrian as the public face.”

Elena couldn't breathe.

Her mother hadn't been a victim.

She had been the architect.

Richard continued.

“But Amelia eventually realized what the machine had become.”

“She wanted to destroy it.”

“Marcus refused.”

“I refused.”

“Adrian tried to stop us.”

“And that was when everything changed.”

The recording flickered.

Richard leaned closer.

“Adrian discovered Amelia's final plan.”

He lowered his voice.

“She intended to transfer the entire network to Elena.”

Elena froze.

Richard continued.

“But there was one condition.”

“What condition?” Damian whispered.

Richard answered:

“Damian had to survive.”

Damian stared.

“What?”

Richard looked into the camera.

“Amelia knew Marcus would eventually use Damian as a weapon against Elena.”

“So she built a countermeasure.”

Elena stepped closer.

“What countermeasure?”

Richard smiled sadly.

“You.”

The recording ended.

Nobody moved.

Maya finally spoke.

“So that's why he chose you.”

Damian nodded.

“He didn't choose me because I was his son.”

“No.”

Elena looked at him.

“Your grandfather knew you could become the person who could break the system.”

Damian laughed bitterly.

“Instead, I became its best employee.”

Elena touched his arm.

“You didn't know.”

“I should have.”

“You were manipulated.”

“So were you.”

She looked at him.

“Yes.”

Daniel opened the safe.

Inside was a USB drive.

A photograph.

And a small envelope addressed to Elena.

She opened it.

My daughter,

If you are reading this, then I failed to destroy the machine myself.

Elena's hands shook.

Do not trust Marcus.

Do not trust Richard.

And do not trust the person who claims to know where Maya came from.

Elena stopped.

Maya looked at her.

“Who does that mean?”

Elena continued.

The truth about Maya was never written down because the truth itself was dangerous.

Only one person knows who her biological mother really is.

Elena whispered:

“Who?”

The final sentence answered.

Veronica.

They drove to the police station.

Veronica was no longer in the interview room.

An officer met them.

“She was transferred.”

“Where?”

“We don't know.”

Elena's face hardened.

“Who authorized it?”

The officer handed her a document.

“Federal custody.”

Daniel checked the signature.

His expression changed.

“This isn't federal.”

“What?”

“This signature is forged.”

Damian looked at Elena.

“Marcus.”

“No.”

Elena shook her head.

“Someone else.”

She looked at the document.

The authorization code belonged to someone inside Voss Global.

Someone with access to every confidential file.

Someone who had been sitting in the boardroom.

Richard Hale.

They returned to the office.

Richard was gone.

His desk had been cleared.

His access badge was disabled.

His apartment was empty.

His car was abandoned.

But Elena found something in his office.

A photograph.

Richard Hale.

Marcus.

Veronica.

And a fourth person.

Elena's mother.

On the back:

The Four Founders.

Daniel stared.

“There were four.”

Elena nodded.

“Marcus, Veronica, Amelia…”

“And Richard Hale.”

Damian pointed to the fourth person.

“That's not Richard Hale.”

Everyone froze.

The man in the photograph was older.

Different.

Elena stared at the face.

Then she remembered the portrait from her grandfather's study.

She knew him.

“My grandfather.”

Daniel looked at her.

“But that's impossible.”

Elena's voice was barely audible.

“My grandfather didn't die.”

The realization hit like an explosion.

Richard Pierce had staged his death.

He had disappeared.

He had watched Damian grow.

He had allowed Marcus to control the empire.

And he had remained hidden.

All these years.

Elena turned toward Damian.

“Your grandfather is alive.”

Damian shook his head.

“No.”

She showed him the photograph.

His face changed.

“No.”

Daniel checked historical records.

Death certificate.

Funeral records.

Estate documents.

All legitimate.

All perfectly constructed.

Too perfectly.

Damian sat down.

“If he's alive…”

Elena finished the sentence.

“He's the person behind everything.”

That night, the phone rang.

Damian answered.

A familiar voice spoke.

His grandfather.

“Hello, Damian.”

Damian couldn't breathe.

“Grandfather?”

“Yes.”

“Where are you?”

“Somewhere you've never looked.”

“Why did you leave?”

“Because I had to.”

“You destroyed my life.”

“No.”

The voice became cold.

“I gave you a life.”

Damian's anger exploded.

“You gave me to Marcus!”

“I gave you a chance to survive him.”

“You let him use me!”

“Yes.”

“You let me hurt Elena!”

“Yes.”

Damian's voice broke.

“You knew.”

“I knew everything.”

Elena stepped closer.

“Put him on speaker.”

Damian did.

Elena spoke.

“Why?”

Richard laughed softly.

“Because your mother was right.”

“About what?”

“The machine must die.”

Elena's expression hardened.

“Then why did you keep it alive?”

“Because someone had to control it until the right successor appeared.”

“Maya?”

“No.”

Richard paused.

“You.”

Elena froze.

“Me?”

“Yes.”

“And Damian?”

“Damian was the test.”

She looked at him.

“What test?”

“To see whether you could love someone more than you loved power.”

Silence.

Elena felt something break inside her.

Richard continued.

“You passed.”

Damian whispered:

“And what happens now?”

“Now you destroy everything.”

The call ended.

Elena looked at Damian.

He looked exhausted.

“What does he mean?”

Elena shook her head.

“I don't know.”

Daniel suddenly shouted.

“Wait.”

He was staring at the USB drive.

“There are files.”

He opened one.

A map appeared.

Then another.

Then a list of bank accounts.

Then a final document.

LIQUIDATION PROTOCOL.

Elena read the instructions.

If activated, every company connected to Crown Meridian would be dissolved.

Every secret account would be exposed.

Every asset would be frozen.

Every political connection would be revealed.

And everyone involved would lose everything.

Including Elena.

Damian stared.

“That's why he called it the machine.”

Elena nodded.

“He built a self-destruct system.”

Daniel looked at the final line.

“There's a condition.”

“What?”

“The protocol can only be activated by two people.”

Elena read the names.

Her blood went cold.

ELENA VOSS.

DAMIAN PIERCE.

Damian stared at her.

“So he wants us to destroy it together.”

“Maybe.”

“And if we don't?”

Daniel looked at the screen.

“Marcus retains control.”

Elena looked toward the window.

For years, everyone had tried to make her choose.

Family or power.

Love or revenge.

Truth or safety.

Now she finally understood what her mother had wanted.

Not an empire.

An ending.

Elena turned to Damian.

“Are you ready?”

He looked at her.

“For what?”

“To burn the machine.”

Damian nodded.

“Yes.”

Then Elena's phone vibrated.

One message.

From Marcus.

DON'T ACTIVATE THE PROTOCOL.

A second message followed.

MAYA IS WITH ME.

Then a final one.

IF YOU WANT HER ALIVE, COME ALONE.

Damian read the messages.

“No.”

Elena looked at him.

“He expects you to come.”

“I know.”

“Then we don't give him what he expects.”

She closed the laptop.

“We activate the protocol.”

Damian stared.

“Without Maya?”

Elena's expression hardened.

“We'll get her back.”

“And Marcus?”

Elena looked toward the dark city.

“He wanted one final chance.”

She picked up the USB drive.

“I'm giving him one.”

“To do what?”

“To choose between his empire…”

She looked at Damian.

“…and his daughter.”

For the first time, Damian smiled.

Not because he was happy.

Because he finally understood.

Marcus had spent decades believing everyone had a price.

Now Elena intended to prove him wrong.

But neither of them knew that Marcus had already prepared for this moment.

And at exactly midnight, every screen in the city would display one sentence:

THE VOSS EMPIRE BELONGS TO THE DEAD.

Beneath it would appear a second line.

AND THE LIVING WILL PAY FOR IT.

May you like

The countdown had begun.

24:00:00.
