Chapter 11 — The Woman Behind Voss Global

Chapter 11 — The Woman Behind Voss Global
The countdown appeared on every screen in the city at exactly midnight.
23:59:59.
Then it began.
Elena stood in the dark conference room, staring at the numbers.
Damian was beside her.
Daniel sat at the main terminal, trying to determine where the signal originated.
Maya's face remained frozen in everyone's mind.
Marcus had her.
And he had made certain Elena knew it.
Daniel typed rapidly.
“I can trace the broadcast.”
“How long?”
“Five minutes.”
“You have three.”
He looked up.
“Why three?”
“Because if Marcus wants us to wait, he's already prepared something for minute four.”
Daniel didn't argue.
He knew she was right.
Elena had finally learned the first rule of dealing with Marcus Vale.
Never respond to the threat you can see.
Look for the threat you haven't noticed yet.
The screens changed.
The countdown disappeared.
A photograph appeared.
A young woman.
Dark hair.
Serious eyes.
Standing beside Amelia Voss.
Elena stopped breathing.
She knew that face.
Not from memory.
From hundreds of old family photographs.
Except the woman had never been in any of them.
Daniel whispered:
“Who is she?”
Elena answered:
“My aunt.”
Damian turned.
“You had an aunt?”
“No.”
She stared at the screen.
“My mother was an only child.”
The photograph changed.
Another image.
The same woman.
Older.
Standing beside Marcus.
Then another.
Standing beside Richard Pierce.
Then another.
Holding a baby.
Elena's stomach tightened.
“That baby…”
Damian looked closer.
“Maya.”
“No.”
Elena shook her head.
“Not Maya.”
The room fell silent.
The baby was the same one from the recording.
The child everyone had believed was Maya.
The child born decades earlier.
The child Amelia had hidden.
The child who shouldn't have existed.
Daniel enlarged the image.
A name appeared beneath it.
EVELYN VOSS.
Elena whispered the name.
“Evelyn.”
The door opened.
Veronica walked in.
Everyone turned.
Damian stepped toward her.
“Where have you been?”
She ignored him.
Her eyes were fixed on the screen.
“You found her.”
Elena stared.
“You knew?”
Veronica nodded.
“For years.”
“Who is Evelyn?”
Veronica sat down.
“Your mother's sister.”
Elena's voice became cold.
“You lied to me.”
“Yes.”
“You lied to everyone.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Veronica looked at the photograph.
“Because Evelyn was the reason Marcus built everything.”
Elena froze.
“Explain.”
Veronica took a breath.
“Before Voss Global, before Meridian, before Damian, there was Evelyn.”
“She was brilliant.”
“She understood finance better than anyone.”
“She could manipulate markets without leaving fingerprints.”
“She believed money could be used to control governments.”
Elena stared.
“That sounds like Marcus.”
Veronica shook her head.
“Marcus learned it from her.”
Daniel slowly sat back.
“So Evelyn was the architect.”
“Not exactly.”
Veronica looked at Elena.
“She created the philosophy.”
“Marcus created the machine.”
“And my mother?”
“Your mother tried to destroy it.”
Elena looked at the screen.
“Why would my mother hide her?”
“Because Evelyn wasn't a victim.”
Veronica paused.
“She was dangerous.”
Damian frowned.
“What did she do?”
Veronica looked at him.
“She created the first succession experiment.”
“What experiment?”
“Children.”
Silence.
Elena's face went pale.
Veronica continued.
“She believed a financial empire could become immortal if the bloodline was engineered to inherit it.”
Damian shook his head.
“That doesn't make sense.”
“It does if you stop thinking like a businessman.”
Veronica pointed at the screen.
“She wasn't building a company.”
“She was building a dynasty.”
Elena remembered the ledger.
Names.
Birth dates.
Blood connections.
Successor classifications.
Everything suddenly made sense.
The empire had never been about money.
Money had simply been the language.
The real objective was control across generations.
Marcus had inherited Evelyn's philosophy.
Richard had inherited the network.
Damian had inherited the corporate machine.
And Maya—
Maya was supposed to inherit the future.
Elena whispered:
“She planned Maya.”
Veronica nodded.
“But Maya wasn't the first.”
“Who was?”
Veronica looked at the photograph.
“Evelyn's first child.”
Elena stared.
“The baby.”
“Yes.”
“Who is she?”
Veronica's eyes filled with fear.
“We don't know.”
Elena stepped closer.
“You expect me to believe that?”
“I watched her disappear.”
“When?”
“Twenty-seven years ago.”
“Who took her?”
Veronica hesitated.
“Your mother.”
Elena's expression changed.
“My mother stole her?”
“No.”
Veronica shook her head.
“She rescued her.”
“From whom?”
“Evelyn.”
The room went silent.
Veronica explained.
“Evelyn wanted the child raised inside the system.”
“Your mother refused.”
“She took the baby and disappeared.”
“Marcus spent years looking for them.”
“Richard helped him.”
“And your father…”
She looked at Elena.
“Your father tried to stop both men.”
Damian asked:
“What happened?”
Veronica's voice dropped.
“He failed.”
Elena walked toward the screen.
“Where is Evelyn now?”
Veronica looked away.
“Dead.”
“When?”
“Eleven years ago.”
Elena frowned.
“The same year I met Damian.”
“Yes.”
“The same year the billion disappeared.”
“Yes.”
“The same year my mother vanished.”
Veronica nodded.
Elena's mind raced.
Too many events.
Too perfectly aligned.
“Then why is Marcus showing her photograph now?”
Veronica's answer came quietly.
“Because he wants you to believe she's dead.”
Elena turned.
“You don't believe she is?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because I saw her.”
“When?”
“Last night.”
Everyone froze.
Damian stepped forward.
“Where?”
Veronica looked at Elena.
“At the place where Maya is being held.”
Elena's heart stopped.
“You saw Evelyn?”
“Yes.”
“Alive?”
“Yes.”
Damian's voice hardened.
“Then Marcus lied.”
Veronica nodded.
“He always does.”
Daniel's terminal beeped.
“I found the signal.”
Everyone turned.
“Where?”
“An underground facility outside the city.”
“Coordinates?”
He displayed them.
Elena recognized the location.
Her mother's old research center.
She had never been allowed inside.
Her father had told her it was abandoned.
Daniel looked at her.
“You know this place?”
“Yes.”
“What's there?”
Elena stared at the map.
“My mother.”
They left immediately.
The drive took forty minutes.
Nobody spoke.
Maya's photograph remained on Elena's phone.
The real Maya.
Her daughter, perhaps.
Her family, certainly.
And somewhere ahead, Marcus was waiting.
But Elena had stopped thinking about him.
She was thinking about Evelyn.
If Evelyn was alive, then every assumption had to be reconsidered.
The dead weren't necessarily dead.
The missing weren't necessarily missing.
And the people claiming to protect them might be the ones who had hidden them.
The facility was buried beneath an abandoned laboratory.
There were no guards.
No cameras.
No locks.
The door opened automatically when Elena approached.
Daniel stared.
“How did it recognize you?”
Elena looked at the scanner.
“I don't know.”
The door opened wider.
A voice came through the intercom.
“Because it was built for you.”
Elena froze.
Her mother's voice.
Amelia.
Alive.
Damian stepped forward.
“Where is Maya?”
“Safe.”
“Where?”
“Not here.”
Elena spoke.
“Mom?”
Silence.
Then:
“Yes.”
Elena's eyes filled with tears.
“Why did you leave me?”
Amelia's voice trembled.
“Because I wanted you to survive.”
“You let me believe you were dead.”
“I had to.”
“You let Marcus control everything.”
“I didn't.”
“You let Damian become his weapon.”
“I tried to stop it.”
“You failed.”
“I know.”
Elena's voice broke.
“You could have told me.”
“I couldn't.”
“Why?”
“Because someone was listening.”
The intercom went silent.
Then every light in the facility turned red.
Daniel whispered:
“We've been compromised.”
A door opened at the end of the corridor.
Maya walked out.
Damian ran toward her.
“Maya!”
She stopped.
He dropped to his knees.
She looked at him.
“You came.”
“Of course I did.”
“You shouldn't have.”
“I couldn't leave you.”
She stared at him.
Then slowly walked closer.
He stood.
For a moment, neither moved.
Then Maya hugged him.
Damian closed his eyes.
His entire body shook.
Elena watched them.
A family beginning to form from the ruins of another.
Then Maya whispered:
“Dad.”
Damian's eyes filled with tears.
“Yes?”
“She wants to meet you.”
“Who?”
Maya pointed behind him.
Elena turned.
A woman stood at the end of the corridor.
Silver hair.
Pale face.
Familiar eyes.
Elena couldn't breathe.
The woman looked at her.
“Hello, Elena.”
Elena stared.
“Evelyn.”
The woman smiled.
“Yes.”
Everything stopped.
Veronica stepped backward.
“You're alive.”
Evelyn looked at her.
“Disappointed?”
“No.”
Veronica's voice shook.
“Terrified.”
Evelyn smiled.
“That is more honest.”
Elena approached slowly.
“You're my mother's sister.”
“Yes.”
“You created Meridian.”
“Yes.”
“You created the succession system.”
“Yes.”
“You planned Maya.”
“No.”
Elena stopped.
“What?”
Evelyn shook her head.
“I planned someone else.”
“Who?”
Evelyn looked toward Maya.
Then toward Damian.
Then finally back at Elena.
“You.”
Elena froze.
“I was the original successor.”
Evelyn nodded.
“Before Maya.”
“Before Damian.”
“Before Marcus.”
Elena couldn't understand.
“Then why did everyone treat me like I was nothing?”
Evelyn's smile disappeared.
“Because that was the only way to keep you alive.”
Evelyn explained everything.
Elena had been identified as the ideal successor before she was born.
Her intelligence.
Her memory.
Her ability to understand patterns.
Her resistance to manipulation.
Amelia had realized what Evelyn was doing.
She had hidden Elena.
She made her appear ordinary.
She kept her away from corporate power.
She allowed Elena to believe she was simply the quiet daughter of a wealthy family.
But Marcus eventually discovered her.
So Amelia created another plan.
Damian.
“He was supposed to destroy your confidence,” Evelyn said.
Elena looked at Damian.
He lowered his eyes.
“I didn't know.”
“I know.”
Evelyn continued.
“Marcus believed Damian would break you.”
“But he did the opposite.”
Elena understood.
Their relationship had become the flaw in Marcus's design.
Love had entered a system designed entirely around control.
And love had made the machine unpredictable.
Evelyn looked at Maya.
“She was never meant to inherit the empire.”
“Then why was she hunted?”
“Because Marcus believed she could become the successor.”
“And now?”
Evelyn smiled.
“Now she can choose.”
Elena looked at her.
“Choose what?”
“Whether to inherit the empire…”
Evelyn paused.
“…or destroy it.”
A gunshot echoed through the facility.
Everyone froze.
Daniel looked toward the entrance.
“They found us.”
Evelyn remained calm.
“Marcus.”
Elena shook her head.
“No.”
“Who, then?”
Evelyn looked at Veronica.
Veronica's face went white.
A second gunshot.
Then footsteps.
Heavy.
Slow.
Approaching.
Veronica whispered:
“Richard.”
The lights went out.
Maya grabbed Damian's hand.
Elena held Evelyn's arm.
Then a voice filled the corridor.
“Evelyn.”
She closed her eyes.
Richard Pierce.
Alive.
The man Elena's family had mourned for decades.
The man who had secretly controlled the empire.
The man who had manipulated Marcus.
He stepped into the emergency light.
Older.
But unmistakable.
He looked directly at Elena.
“You finally found the truth.”
Elena stared at him.
“You're alive.”
“Yes.”
“You killed my father.”
Richard's expression remained emotionless.
“No.”
“Then who did?”
He looked toward Evelyn.
“She did.”
Elena turned.
Evelyn didn't deny it.
“I had no choice.”
Elena's voice trembled.
“You murdered my father?”
“I saved you.”
“You keep saying that.”
Evelyn stepped closer.
“Because it's true.”
Richard smiled.
“You see the problem, Elena?”
She stared at him.
“What problem?”
“You've spent your entire life believing the wrong people were protecting you.”
He pointed at Evelyn.
“She didn't save you.”
He pointed at himself.
“Neither did I.”
Then he looked at Maya.
“The only person who ever truly protected you…”
He smiled.
“…was Marcus.”
Everyone froze.
Damian stepped forward.
“That's a lie.”
Richard laughed.
“Ask Elena's mother.”
The intercom activated.
Amelia's voice whispered:
“Don't listen to him.”
Richard smiled.
“Too late.”
He raised a small remote.
Every screen in the facility activated.
A single file appeared.
PROJECT VOSS — FINAL SUCCESSION.
Elena stared.
Her own name appeared first.
Then Damian's.
Then Maya's.
But beneath Maya was another name.
A name nobody had mentioned.
A name that made Evelyn's face lose all color.
SUBJECT ZERO.
Elena looked at her.
“Who is Subject Zero?”
Evelyn whispered:
“No.”
Richard smiled.
“You really thought you were the beginning?”
The screen changed.
A photograph appeared.
A baby.
Then a second photograph.
A young woman.
Then a third.
A current photograph.
Elena stared.
She recognized the face immediately.
Her heart stopped.
The woman was standing in the same facility.
Alive.
Watching them.
And she looked exactly like Elena.
Richard's voice became almost gentle.
“Meet the woman who existed before you.”
Elena couldn't speak.
Because the stranger smiled.
May you like
And whispered:
“Hello, little sister.”
