Chapter 8 — The Betrayal in the Boardroom

Chapter 8 — The Betrayal in the Boardroom

At 11:47 p.m., Elena walked into the Voss Global boardroom carrying the black ledger.

She was alone.

At least, that was what everyone watching the security cameras believed.

The boardroom was dark except for the city lights beyond the windows.

Elena placed the ledger on the table.

Then she waited.

At 11:52, the doors opened.

Marcus Vale walked in.

For the first time, Elena saw him without photographs, rumors, or distorted recordings between them.

He was older than she expected.

Silver hair.

Perfect suit.

A face that carried no visible guilt.

Behind him stood six men.

Two were lawyers.

Two were security officers.

The remaining two were executives Elena recognized.

She stared at them.

“Board members.”

Marcus smiled.

“You see?”

He gestured toward the men.

“Everyone comes back when the right person asks.”

Elena didn't move.

“You kidnapped Maya.”

“I protected her.”

“You threatened to kill her.”

“I threatened to reveal what would happen if you refused.”

“That isn't protection.”

Marcus walked toward the table.

“It depends on who controls the definition.”

He looked at the ledger.

“You brought it.”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

He reached for it.

Elena placed her hand over the cover.

“Not yet.”

Marcus smiled.

“You've become difficult.”

“No.”

She looked him directly in the eye.

“I've become informed.”

Marcus pulled out a chair.

“Sit.”

Elena remained standing.

He sat alone.

“You've spent your entire life believing your father was weak.”

“He was.”

“He wasn't.”

Marcus leaned back.

“Adrian was the only man who ever came close to destroying me.”

“Then why did he fail?”

“Because he loved your mother.”

Elena's expression hardened.

“What does that have to do with anything?”

“Everything.”

Marcus folded his hands.

“Your father discovered the original Meridian structure.”

“He discovered the corruption.”

“He discovered the succession plan.”

“He discovered Maya.”

Elena said nothing.

“And when he threatened to expose everything, I gave him a choice.”

“What choice?”

“His family.”

Marcus's voice became quiet.

“He could protect you, or he could protect himself.”

Elena felt something cold move through her chest.

“What did he choose?”

“You.”

Elena stared at him.

Marcus continued.

“He signed documents transferring control of the Voss assets.”

“He agreed to disappear from public life.”

“He allowed everyone to believe he had betrayed Amelia.”

“And my mother?”

“She refused to cooperate.”

“So you made her disappear.”

“No.”

Marcus shook his head.

“Your mother disappeared because she wanted to.”

Elena's eyes narrowed.

“You expect me to believe that?”

“I expect you to ask her.”

“Where is she?”

Marcus smiled.

“Close.”

The doors opened again.

One of the board members entered.

Elena recognized him immediately.

Richard Hale.

The man who had served as chairman of Voss Global for twelve years.

He walked directly toward Marcus.

Elena's expression changed.

“You.”

Richard avoided her eyes.

Marcus smiled.

“This is the part you haven't understood.”

Elena looked around the room.

One by one, other board members began entering.

Seven.

Then nine.

Then eleven.

Every one of them stood behind Marcus.

Richard finally spoke.

“I'm sorry.”

Elena laughed softly.

“Sorry?”

“You're making this personal.”

“You helped him steal my family's company.”

“I helped preserve it.”

“You destroyed it.”

“No.”

Richard shook his head.

“You did.”

Elena stared.

Richard continued.

“You think you own Voss Global because your name is on documents.”

Marcus smiled.

“But ownership is meaningless without control.”

Elena looked around the room.

Every person she had trusted had turned against her.

Not because Marcus had threatened them.

Because they believed he would win.

And that was worse.

Elena looked at Marcus.

“This is your board.”

“No.”

He leaned forward.

“This is your board.”

She frowned.

“What?”

“You appointed every one of them.”

Elena looked at Richard.

Then at the others.

Marcus continued.

“Every director you thought was independent was selected through a process you never saw.”

“Every investment committee was compromised.”

“Every audit was manipulated.”

“And every acquisition Damian made was approved by people sitting in this room.”

Elena's face remained calm.

“You're proud of that?”

“No.”

Marcus shook his head.

“I'm explaining why you lost before you knew there was a war.”

The door opened once more.

Damian entered.

Elena turned sharply.

“What are you doing here?”

Marcus smiled.

“I invited him.”

Damian walked into the room.

His eyes went immediately to Marcus.

“You're my father.”

Marcus nodded.

“Yes.”

Damian's face was emotionless.

“You built my career.”

“Yes.”

“You destroyed my life.”

Marcus shrugged.

“You destroyed your own life.”

“You used me.”

“I gave you an empire.”

“You gave me a cage.”

Marcus smiled.

“A cage with forty-three billion dollars.”

Damian stepped closer.

“And Maya?”

Marcus's expression changed.

“She is mine.”

“No.”

Damian's voice was quiet.

“She is my daughter.”

“Biologically.”

Marcus leaned forward.

“But not legally.”

Damian frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Marcus looked at Elena.

“Ask her.”

Elena said nothing.

Marcus smiled.

“The final succession document names Maya as beneficiary.”

Damian's jaw tightened.

“Why?”

“Because she carries the Pierce bloodline.”

Marcus paused.

“And the Vale bloodline.”

“You want her to inherit.”

“I want the system to survive.”

Elena finally understood.

Marcus wasn't trying to regain the money.

He wasn't trying to rebuild Damian's company.

He wasn't even trying to defeat her personally.

He wanted continuity.

A successor.

Someone young enough to shape.

Someone who could inherit the structure without knowing where it came from.

Maya.

Elena looked at Damian.

“He wants to turn her into what he turned you into.”

Damian's expression hardened.

“Not happening.”

Marcus laughed.

“You don't get to decide.”

“I do now.”

Damian turned toward the board.

“I know what you did.”

Richard stared.

“What are you talking about?”

“The transfers.”

Silence.

“The offshore accounts.”

More silence.

“The payments to Marcus.”

Richard's face changed.

Damian pulled a folder from his coat.

“You thought I didn't know.”

Marcus looked at him.

“You didn't.”

“No.”

Damian smiled bitterly.

“But Elena did.”

Every head turned toward Elena.

She remained still.

Marcus's expression finally changed.

“What did you do?”

Elena picked up the ledger.

“I didn't come here to surrender it.”

She opened it.

“I came here to show you something.”

She turned to the screen.

A document appeared.

Marcus stared.

His face went pale.

It was the original ownership agreement.

But there was something different.

A second page.

Marcus stepped forward.

“Where did you get that?”

Elena smiled.

“Your biggest mistake was believing you were the only person who knew about the original documents.”

Marcus stared at the page.

A signature appeared at the bottom.

Amelia Voss.

And beneath it:

Elena Voss — Final Authority.

Marcus's face hardened.

“That clause was never activated.”

“It was.”

“When?”

“Eleven years ago.”

Marcus looked at Damian.

Damian said nothing.

Elena continued.

“Damian's resignation activated it.”

Marcus froze.

The entire boardroom went silent.

Elena looked around.

“The moment Damian voluntarily surrendered control, the succession clause transferred the remaining assets to me.”

Richard shook his head.

“That can't be legal.”

Elena turned toward him.

“You should tell that to the lawyers who drafted it.”

The two lawyers beside Marcus suddenly looked uncomfortable.

One of them whispered:

“She is correct.”

Marcus stared at them.

“You knew?”

“We discovered the clause this morning.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

The lawyer swallowed.

“Because she owns the controlling interest.”

Marcus's face changed completely.

For the first time, Elena saw fear.

Not anger.

Not arrogance.

Fear.

“You lied to me.”

Elena shook her head.

“No.”

She closed the ledger.

“I let you believe what you wanted to believe.”

Richard suddenly moved toward the exit.

Elena spoke without looking at him.

“Sit.”

He stopped.

“Why?”

“Because we're not finished.”

Richard slowly returned to his chair.

Elena pressed a button.

The screen changed.

Bank statements appeared.

Then photographs.

Then recorded conversations.

Then emails.

The board members watched in horror.

Their names appeared one after another.

Evidence.

Payments.

Secret agreements.

Offshore transfers.

Everything.

Richard whispered:

“You recorded us.”

“No.”

Elena smiled.

“You recorded yourselves.”

Marcus stood.

“You think this proves anything?”

“Yes.”

“What?”

“That you betrayed your own board.”

He stared at her.

She continued.

“You ordered them to falsify records.”

“You instructed executives to move assets.”

“You authorized illegal payments.”

“And you threatened witnesses.”

Marcus laughed.

“You have no idea what you're doing.”

“I know exactly what I'm doing.”

Elena looked at the lawyers.

“Send the files.”

The lawyers hesitated.

“To whom?”

“Everyone.”

Marcus stepped forward.

“Don't.”

Elena looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because if you release those documents, hundreds of people go down.”

“Yes.”

“Governments.”

“Yes.”

“Banks.”

“Yes.”

“Companies.”

“Yes.”

“And Voss Global.”

Elena nodded.

“Especially Voss Global.”

Marcus stared.

“You would destroy your own empire?”

Elena's answer was immediate.

“It was never mine.”

She looked at the board.

“It belonged to people who trusted us.”

Then she looked back at Marcus.

“And you turned it into a weapon.”

The room erupted.

Board members began shouting.

Some demanded lawyers.

Others reached for their phones.

Security moved toward Elena.

Damian stepped in front of her.

“Don't.”

One guard stopped.

Marcus looked at Damian.

“You would protect her?”

“Yes.”

“She destroyed your life.”

“No.”

Damian looked at Elena.

“She showed me who destroyed it.”

Then the doors burst open.

Federal investigators entered.

Behind them were financial crime officers.

Richard turned white.

Marcus stared at Elena.

“You called them.”

Elena shook her head.

“No.”

Marcus frowned.

“Then who?”

A voice came from the doorway.

“I did.”

Everyone turned.

Veronica stood there.

She was accompanied by two officers.

Marcus's face became expressionless.

“You.”

Veronica looked at him.

“You should have killed me when you had the chance.”

Marcus said nothing.

Veronica walked forward.

“I have spent eleven years being afraid of you.”

She looked at Elena.

“But I am done.”

Marcus laughed.

“You think they can protect you?”

“No.”

Veronica shook her head.

“I don't need protection anymore.”

She placed a flash drive on the table.

“I need evidence.”

Marcus looked at the drive.

“What is that?”

“The missing billion.”

The room fell silent.

Elena stared at her.

“You found it?”

Veronica nodded.

“No.”

She looked at Marcus.

“He did.”

Everyone turned.

Marcus's expression changed.

Veronica smiled.

“The money never left his control.”

She pointed at him.

“He moved it through hundreds of accounts.”

“But every account led back to one private trust.”

Marcus's eyes hardened.

“And that trust belongs to…”

Veronica paused.

“Marcus Vale.”

Elena looked at Marcus.

The missing billion.

The money he had spent years pretending was gone.

It had never disappeared.

He had hidden it in a private trust.

A secret reserve.

A final weapon.

Veronica continued.

“And there's more.”

She handed Elena another document.

“Your mother's signature.”

Elena looked down.

The document was dated twenty-eight years earlier.

It transferred control of the trust.

To Elena.

Not Marcus.

Not Damian.

Not Maya.

Elena.

Marcus stepped forward.

“That document is fraudulent.”

Veronica shook her head.

“No.”

She looked at Elena.

“Your mother created the trust.”

“She put everything inside it.”

“Then she disappeared.”

Elena's eyes filled with tears.

“Why?”

Veronica answered:

“Because she knew Marcus would come after you.”

Marcus suddenly laughed.

Everyone looked at him.

“You still don't understand.”

Elena stared.

“What?”

Marcus's laughter stopped.

“You think you've won.”

He pointed toward the ledger.

“You haven't.”

He looked at Damian.

“Your father is dead.”

Damian froze.

“What?”

Marcus smiled.

“Adrian Voss didn't disappear.”

“He died eleven years ago.”

Elena's face went white.

“No.”

Marcus continued.

“And your mother…”

He paused.

“She wasn't protecting you from me.”

Elena's voice trembled.

“Then what was she doing?”

Marcus smiled.

“She was protecting you from your father.”

Elena stared.

The room became silent.

Then the lights suddenly flickered.

Every screen went black.

A single message appeared.

ELENA, DON'T TRUST VERONICA.

She froze.

Another line appeared.

SHE KNOWS WHERE I AM.

Elena's heart stopped.

Her mother's voice came through the speakers.

“Elena.”

Everyone turned toward the screen.

Amelia appeared.

Alive.

Older.

Terrified.

“Don't let Marcus take Maya.”

She looked directly into the camera.

“But don't let Veronica take her either.”

Elena stared.

Veronica's face went pale.

Damian looked at her.

“What does that mean?”

Veronica stepped backward.

“No.”

Amelia's recording continued.

“Maya is not the heir.”

A pause.

“She is the key.”

The screen went black.

Elena looked at Veronica.

Then Damian.

Then Marcus.

For the first time, all three men and women in the room understood that the boardroom betrayal had been a distraction.

The real battle had never been about the empire.

It was about Maya.

And whoever controlled her would control everything.

Marcus looked at Elena.

“You wanted the truth.”

He smiled.

“Now you have it.”

Elena's phone vibrated.

One message.

From an unknown number.

MIDNIGHT IS OVER.

THE NEXT MOVE IS YOURS.

She looked at the clock.

12:01 a.m.

May you like

The boardroom doors slammed shut.

And somewhere beneath the city, someone had already begun moving the billion again.
