Chapter 5 — Veronica's Secret

Chapter 5 — Veronica's Secret
Veronica had been silent for three days.
Not the ordinary kind of silence.
Not the kind that came from embarrassment or exhaustion.
This was the silence of someone who knew that one sentence could destroy everything.
She sat alone in a private lounge at the old Pierce Club, staring at the untouched glass of water in front of her.
Her phone lay on the table.
Three missed calls from Damian.
Two from his lawyers.
One from a number she had never seen before.
She ignored them all.
Then the phone rang again.
This time, she answered.
“Hello?”
A man's voice came through.
“You have twenty-four hours.”
Veronica's face went pale.
“Who is this?”
“You know.”
“I don't.”
“Don't lie to me.”
Her fingers tightened around the glass.
“What do you want?”
“The truth.”
“I don't know what you're talking about.”
“You know exactly what I'm talking about.”
The caller paused.
“Tell Elena what happened the night Amelia disappeared.”
Veronica stopped breathing.
“How do you know about Amelia?”
The call ended.
Veronica stared at the screen.
Then she whispered:
“Because I was there.”
Elena found her that afternoon.
Veronica was sitting in the same lounge.
She looked older than she had three days earlier.
Much older.
Elena walked toward her.
“You wanted to see me?”
Veronica looked up.
“I didn't call you.”
“Then why are you here?”
Veronica looked around the room.
“Because there are things you need to know.”
Elena sat opposite her.
“About my mother?”
Veronica nodded.
“About Marcus?”
Another nod.
“And Damian?”
Veronica hesitated.
“Yes.”
Elena's eyes narrowed.
“Then start talking.”
Veronica took a breath.
“I knew who you were before Damian married you.”
Elena remained still.
“How?”
“Your father told me.”
“When?”
“Before your wedding.”
“Why?”
Veronica looked down.
“Because he was afraid.”
“Of what?”
“You.”
Elena almost laughed.
“My father was afraid of me?”
“No.”
Veronica looked directly at her.
“He was afraid of what would happen if you ever discovered the truth.”
Elena waited.
Veronica continued.
“Your father believed Marcus would eventually come for you.”
“Why?”
“Because your mother had taken something.”
“The billion?”
“No.”
Veronica shook her head.
“The ledger.”
Elena's expression changed.
“What ledger?”
“The original ledger of Crown Meridian.”
She leaned closer.
“The one that recorded every transaction, every payment, every person Marcus controlled.”
Elena remembered the black book in the archive.
“We found it.”
Veronica shook her head.
“No.”
Elena frowned.
“The book you found is a copy.”
Silence.
“What?”
“The original disappeared with Amelia.”
Elena felt cold.
“Where is it?”
“I don't know.”
“Then why are you telling me this?”
“Because Marcus thinks I know.”
“Do you?”
Veronica looked away.
“Yes.”
Elena leaned forward.
“Where is it?”
Veronica's voice became barely audible.
“With Damian.”
Elena froze.
“What?”
“Damian has had it for eleven years.”
“That isn't possible.”
“It is.”
“Why would he have it?”
“Because Marcus gave it to him.”
Elena stared.
The room seemed to become smaller.
“What was inside?”
“Names.”
“Whose names?”
“Everyone who mattered.”
Veronica swallowed.
“Politicians. Judges. Bankers. CEOs. Even people inside governments.”
Elena's voice sharpened.
“And Damian?”
“Damian's name was on the first page.”
“Why?”
Veronica closed her eyes.
“Because he was never the owner of the empire.”
She looked at Elena.
“He was the successor.”
Elena stood.
“Where is the ledger?”
Veronica shook her head.
“I don't know.”
“You just said Damian has it.”
“I said Marcus gave it to Damian.”
“Then where is it?”
“Damian doesn't know what it is.”
Elena stopped.
“What?”
“He was told it was a personal financial archive.”
“Damian had the original ledger and never opened it?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because Marcus told him never to open it.”
Elena laughed bitterly.
“Damian obeyed someone?”
“He obeyed the person who made him rich.”
That answer silenced her.
Veronica pulled a small envelope from her handbag.
“I found this yesterday.”
Elena took it.
Inside was an old photograph.
Damian.
Twenty-two years old.
Standing beside Marcus.
Elena recognized the location.
The Crown Meridian offices.
But there was another person in the photograph.
Veronica.
Much younger.
Elena looked at her.
“You knew him.”
“Yes.”
“You worked for Marcus.”
“Yes.”
“You helped him choose Damian.”
Veronica's eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.”
Elena's voice became cold.
“And you helped destroy my mother.”
Veronica shook her head violently.
“No.”
“Then explain.”
“I tried to save her.”
“How?”
“I warned her.”
“About what?”
“That Marcus was going to take the ledger.”
Elena stared.
“And?”
“Your mother refused.”
“What happened?”
Veronica looked down.
“She gave it to Damian.”
Elena froze.
“My mother gave Damian the ledger?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because she knew Marcus would never suspect him.”
Elena slowly sat down.
For the first time, the pieces began connecting.
Her mother hadn't simply disappeared.
She had hidden the ledger inside the one person Marcus believed he completely controlled.
Damian.
The arrogant young man Marcus had chosen.
The future CEO.
The man Elena had married.
Her mother had used him as a hiding place.
Elena looked at Veronica.
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“I was afraid.”
“Of Marcus?”
“Yes.”
“And now?”
Veronica laughed bitterly.
“Now I'm more afraid of what happens if I stay silent.”
“Why?”
Veronica leaned forward.
“Because Marcus isn't looking for the ledger anymore.”
Elena frowned.
“What is he looking for?”
“You.”
“Why?”
“Because you are the only person who can unlock it.”
Elena stared at her.
“How?”
“The ledger isn't paper.”
“What?”
“The physical book is only half of it.”
Veronica reached into her handbag again.
She removed an old key.
Small.
Black.
With a silver crown engraved on its head.
“This unlocks the second half.”
Elena took it.
“Where?”
“In the company.”
“Which company?”
“Not Voss Global.”
Veronica's voice dropped.
“Crown Meridian.”
Elena looked at the key.
“Does the company still exist?”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
“Underground.”
That night, Elena brought Damian to the estate.
He looked exhausted.
“You said it was urgent.”
“It is.”
She placed the photograph on the table.
He looked at it.
Then froze.
“Where did you get this?”
“Veronica.”
Damian stared at her.
“Why did she have this?”
“She worked with Marcus.”
He looked away.
“I knew she was involved.”
“You knew?”
“Not everything.”
“What did you know?”
Damian remained silent.
“Damian.”
He finally said:
“I knew Marcus was watching me.”
“How long?”
“Since I was twenty-two.”
“And you never told me?”
“I thought he was protecting me.”
Elena stared at him.
“He was controlling you.”
“I know that now.”
She placed the photograph in front of him.
“Did he ever give you something?”
Damian's face changed.
Elena noticed.
“What?”
He stood.
“Nothing.”
“You're lying.”
“No.”
“You're remembering.”
He looked at her.
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Then Damian walked to a locked cabinet.
He entered a code.
The cabinet opened.
Inside was a black box.
Elena's heartbeat accelerated.
Damian lifted it.
“I've never opened this.”
“Marcus gave it to you?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“The night before I met you.”
Elena stared.
“Open it.”
Damian hesitated.
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
He unlocked it.
Inside was a black leather ledger.
Elena recognized the cover immediately.
The same symbol.
The crown.
She reached for it.
Her hand trembled.
Damian whispered:
“This is it.”
Elena opened the first page.
Names.
Hundreds.
But the first name wasn't Damian.
It wasn't Marcus.
It wasn't Adrian.
It was:
AMELIA VOSS.
Elena's breath caught.
Beside her mother's name was a date.
And beneath it:
ASSET STATUS: PROTECTED.
She turned the page.
Another name.
ELENA VOSS.
Beside it:
ASSET STATUS: SUCCESSOR.
Damian stared.
“Your mother put you in this.”
“No.”
Elena shook her head.
“Someone else did.”
She turned another page.
There.
A handwritten note.
The daughter must never know the truth until the father is dead.
Elena froze.
“My father.”
Damian looked at the note.
“What truth?”
She turned the page.
There was another name.
ADRIAN VOSS.
Beside it:
STATUS: COMPROMISED.
Elena's eyes widened.
Then she saw the next line.
CAUSE: BETRAYAL OF AMELIA.
She stopped breathing.
“My father betrayed my mother.”
Damian whispered:
“Maybe that's why she disappeared.”
“No.”
Elena looked at the next page.
There was a final entry.
VERONICA PIERCE — INFORMANT.
Damian went still.
“Veronica.”
Elena turned toward him.
“She was working for your mother.”
“What?”
“Not Marcus.”
Elena pointed to the entry.
“Your mother recruited her.”
Damian's face changed.
“Then why did Veronica help Marcus?”
Elena turned another page.
The answer was written underneath.
Informant compromised. Threat: Child.
Damian frowned.
“What child?”
Elena stared.
She suddenly understood.
“Veronica had a daughter.”
Damian looked at her.
“I never knew.”
“She disappeared.”
“When?”
“Eleven years ago.”
The same year Damian met Elena.
The same year the billion moved.
The same year Marcus began Project Meridian.
Damian's face went pale.
“Where is she?”
Elena shook her head.
“I don't know.”
Then they heard a noise.
The front door slammed.
Someone had entered the house.
Damian stood.
“Stay here.”
Elena shook her head.
“No.”
They moved into the hallway.
Footsteps approached.
Slow.
Then Veronica appeared.
Her face was terrified.
She looked at the ledger.
Then at Elena.
“You opened it.”
“Yes.”
Veronica closed her eyes.
“Then it's over.”
“What is?”
Veronica looked toward the door.
“Marcus knows.”
The lights went out.
Darkness swallowed the house.
A second later, every window shattered.
Damian pulled Elena to the floor.
Glass exploded across the room.
Someone screamed outside.
Then silence.
Emergency lights flickered on.
Elena stood.
“Where's Veronica?”
No answer.
She looked around.
Veronica was gone.
Only her handbag remained.
Elena picked it up.
Inside was a photograph.
A young girl.
Sixteen years old.
The same girl Clara had shown her.
Elena turned it over.
A name was written on the back.
Maya Vale.
Her sister.
But underneath the name was another sentence.
She isn't Amelia's daughter.
Elena's blood ran cold.
Damian stared at the photograph.
“Then whose daughter is she?”
Elena couldn't answer.
The phone rang.
She answered.
Marcus's voice came through.
“You've opened the ledger.”
Elena said nothing.
“You've learned about Maya.”
“Where is my mother?”
“Alive.”
“Where?”
“You are asking the wrong question.”
“What question should I ask?”
Marcus paused.
Then:
“Ask Veronica why she gave birth to the girl.”
Elena's face went white.
“What?”
The call ended.
Damian stared at her.
“What did he say?”
Elena slowly lowered the phone.
“Veronica has been lying about Maya.”
“Who is Maya?”
Elena looked at the photograph.
Her sister.
The girl who had been hidden for sixteen years.
And now the truth was beginning to emerge.
Maya was not Amelia's daughter.
She was Veronica's.
Which meant the woman Elena had trusted for years had secretly given birth to a child connected to Marcus Vale.
And if Marcus had been telling the truth…
Then Maya wasn't merely another missing heir.
She was the person the entire empire had been built to protect.
Or destroy.
Elena looked at the black ledger in her hand.
For eleven years, she had believed Damian was the center of the mystery.
Then she believed her mother was.
Now she understood.
Everyone had been protecting one secret.
A child.
A ledger.
A billion dollars.
And a bloodline that could bring the entire Voss empire crashing down.
Somewhere outside, a car engine roared to life.
Elena ran to the window.
A black vehicle disappeared into the darkness.
On the pavement below lay a single sheet of paper.
She went downstairs and picked it up.
There were only six words.
ASK WHO MAYA'S FATHER REALLY IS.
Elena stared at them.
Then she looked back at the photograph.
And for the first time, she noticed something she had missed.
Maya had Elena's eyes.
But not Amelia's.
Not Adrian's.
Someone else's.
Someone Elena had seen before.
Someone whose name was written on the first page of the ledger.
Marcus Vale.
The man behind the empire.
The man who had manipulated Damian.
The man who had destroyed her family.
May you like
And perhaps—
the father of the girl everyone had spent sixteen years trying to hide.
