Chapter 2 — The Company Behind Voss Global

Chapter 2 — The Company Behind Voss Global
Elena did not sleep.
At 2:17 a.m., she was still sitting in her office, staring at the photograph.
At 2:18, she turned it over.
At 2:19, she turned it back.
The man standing beside her father was still there.
He was younger then, perhaps in his early thirties.
Dark suit.
Cold eyes.
One hand resting casually on Adrian Voss's shoulder.
Elena had seen that face before.
Not recently.
Not in person.
In documents.
In old photographs.
In records her grandmother had ordered her never to open.
She whispered the name.
“Marcus Vale.”
The name felt like a locked door.
She had spent years believing Marcus Vale was merely one of her father's former business partners.
A financier.
A man who disappeared after Adrian's first major expansion.
But the call had changed everything.
Ask who gave Damian his first million dollars.
Elena's fingers tightened around the photograph.
She picked up her phone.
“Daniel.”
He answered immediately.
“You're awake.”
“So are you.”
“I've been awake for two hours.”
“Find everything you can on Marcus Vale.”
There was a pause.
Daniel's voice became serious.
“Everything?”
“Everything.”
“Legal records?”
“Yes.”
“Financial?”
“Yes.”
“Private?”
“Yes.”
Another pause.
“That's going to take time.”
Elena looked at the photograph.
“We don't have time.”
By sunrise, Daniel had sent the first file.
Elena opened it.
The first page contained almost nothing.
MARCUS VALE
Born: 1968.
Citizenship: Unknown.
Business history: Restricted.
Current location: Unknown.
Known associates: Restricted.
Known assets: Unknown.
Elena frowned.
“That's impossible.”
Daniel appeared on the video call.
“I know.”
“This man existed.”
“Yes.”
“Then why is there no history?”
“Because somebody erased it.”
“Who?”
Daniel hesitated.
“That is what worries me.”
Elena scrolled.
There were only three verified photographs.
One from 1989.
One from 1997.
One from 2004.
Then nothing.
Twenty-two years of silence.
Elena stared at the screen.
“Where did he go?”
Daniel answered:
“Into the company.”
“What company?”
“That is the question.”
At nine in the morning, Damian arrived.
He looked different.
Not physically.
But something had disappeared from him.
The arrogance.
The certainty.
The effortless confidence of a man who believed the world would always bend around him.
Elena looked up.
“You came.”
“You told me to.”
“I didn't.”
Damian stopped.
“What?”
“You decided to come.”
He gave a faint smile.
“I'm learning.”
Elena almost smiled back.
Almost.
Damian noticed the photograph on her desk.
“Who's that?”
She turned it over.
“Someone dangerous.”
“Who?”
“Marcus Vale.”
Damian's expression changed instantly.
Elena saw it.
“You know him.”
“No.”
“Damian.”
“I know the name.”
“How?”
He walked toward the desk.
“When I was twenty-two, someone offered me a million dollars.”
Elena went still.
“Who?”
“I never met him.”
“What did he say?”
“He said I had potential.”
“Anything else?”
“He told me not to ask where the money came from.”
Elena's voice became quieter.
“And you accepted?”
“I was twenty-two.”
“You didn't ask questions?”
“No.”
“Why?”
Damian looked at her.
“Because I thought rich people didn't ask where money came from.”
Elena stared at him.
“And that was your first mistake.”
“No.”
He shook his head.
“My first mistake was believing the money was mine.”
Daniel entered.
He placed a tablet on the table.
“I found something.”
Elena turned.
“What?”
“A company.”
“What company?”
Daniel opened a corporate registry.
MERIDIAN CROWN GROUP.
Damian frowned.
“I've never heard of it.”
“You were never supposed to.”
Elena looked at Daniel.
“Who owns it?”
Daniel zoomed in.
“That's the problem.”
The ownership structure was hidden behind twelve layers of shell companies.
Daniel had traced them through six countries.
At the end of the chain was a private trust.
The trust had no public beneficiary.
But one director appeared repeatedly.
Elena read the name.
M. Vale.
Her stomach tightened.
“Marcus.”
Daniel nodded.
“What does Meridian Crown own?”
“That's where things get strange.”
He opened another file.
“Voss Global.”
Elena stared.
“No.”
“Not directly.”
“Then how?”
Daniel displayed the corporate structure.
“Voss Global owns its public companies.”
“Meridian Crown owns the private financing entities.”
“And those financing entities own the intellectual property.”
Elena's face went cold.
“So Voss Global isn't the top.”
“No.”
“It's the middle.”
Daniel nodded.
“There is another company above it.”
Damian stepped forward.
“What is it called?”
Daniel looked at Elena.
“Crown Meridian Holdings.”
Silence.
Elena stared at the screen.
The company had existed longer than Voss Global.
Longer than Damian's empire.
Longer than her own public career.
She whispered:
“How long?”
Daniel answered.
“Forty-three years.”
Elena stood.
“Who founded it?”
Daniel hesitated.
“Your grandfather.”
The room went silent.
Damian looked at her.
“Elena…”
She didn't answer.
Her grandfather had always been described as a visionary.
A man who built the original Voss fortune.
A respected businessman.
A philanthropist.
A dead legend.
But suddenly, Elena understood.
He hadn't built Voss Global.
He had built the company behind it.
And Marcus Vale had inherited control.
Or perhaps he had never lost it.
They went to the basement.
The Voss estate had once contained a private archive.
Elena had never opened it.
Her grandfather had forbidden it.
After his death, her grandmother had sealed it.
Now Elena broke the lock.
The door opened with a metallic groan.
Dust filled the air.
Shelves covered every wall.
Old ledgers.
Contracts.
Photographs.
Property deeds.
Boxes.
Hundreds of them.
Daniel switched on a light.
Damian looked around.
“This is an entire company history.”
“No,” Elena said.
She walked deeper into the room.
“This is the history they didn't want me to see.”
Three hours later, they found the first ledger.
The cover was black.
No title.
No date.
Elena opened it.
The first page contained handwritten names.
Politicians.
Bankers.
Judges.
Industrialists.
Executives.
Journalists.
Every name had a number beside it.
Damian stared.
“What is this?”
Elena turned the page.
The next page contained transactions.
The next contained favors.
The next contained information.
Daniel looked horrified.
“This isn't accounting.”
“No.”
Elena closed the book.
“It's influence.”
Damian looked at her.
“Your family controlled people.”
“My family wasn't the only one.”
“What do you mean?”
Elena pointed to the final page.
At the bottom was a signature.
M. Vale.
Damian stepped back.
“He was running it.”
“Yes.”
“Then your grandfather worked for him.”
Elena shook her head.
“No.”
She looked at the ledger again.
“My grandfather built the machine.”
She paused.
“Marcus took control of it.”
Then they found a box.
Inside were old contracts.
One was dated thirty-one years ago.
Elena read the first paragraph.
Then stopped.
Damian noticed.
“What?”
She handed him the document.
He read it.
His face went pale.
It was an agreement between Crown Meridian Holdings and a young Adrian Voss.
The contract transferred funding to a new company.
The amount was enormous.
Damian stared.
“This is…”
“My first company,” Elena said.
He looked at her.
“No.”
“Yes.”
“You funded my father?”
“Apparently.”
Damian read the final page.
His name appeared there.
Damian Pierce — designated executive beneficiary.
His hands began to shake.
“What does that mean?”
Elena looked at Daniel.
Daniel's face was grim.
“It means someone selected Damian before he ever became CEO.”
Damian dropped the document.
“You're saying someone planned my entire career?”
“Yes.”
“Who?”
“Marcus.”
“No.”
“You said yourself you received the first million from an unknown man.”
“I didn't know his name.”
“But he knew yours.”
Damian stared at Elena.
“What else is in there?”
She opened another file.
A personnel assessment.
Damian's name.
Age twenty-two.
Education.
Psychological profile.
Ambition score.
Risk tolerance.
Leadership tendencies.
Emotional vulnerabilities.
Even family history.
Damian stared at the pages.
“They studied me.”
“Yes.”
“For what?”
Elena turned the page.
At the bottom was a single sentence.
Candidate suitable for controlled executive placement.
Damian's face hardened.
“I was an experiment.”
“No.”
Elena looked at him.
“You were an asset.”
The words broke something inside him.
For years, Damian had believed he was powerful.
He had believed he was brilliant.
He had believed he had earned every promotion.
Every acquisition.
Every victory.
Now he discovered someone had been moving him across a chessboard before he even knew there was a game.
He sat down.
“Then why did they let me marry you?”
Elena froze.
Daniel looked away.
Damian continued.
“Was that planned too?”
Elena searched the documents.
Nothing.
She opened another box.
Nothing.
Then she found a sealed envelope.
Her name was written on it.
She opened it.
Inside was a single page.
ELENA VOSS — DO NOT INTERFERE WITH DAMIAN PIERCE.
No signature.
No explanation.
Elena stared.
“When was this written?”
Daniel checked the paper.
“Sixteen years ago.”
Damian looked at her.
“That was before we met.”
“Yes.”
“Who wrote it?”
Elena turned the page.
On the back was a symbol.
A crown.
And beneath it:
M.V.
A sound came from upstairs.
Everyone froze.
Daniel reached for his weapon.
Damian stood.
Elena whispered:
“Someone's here.”
Footsteps moved across the floor above them.
Slow.
Deliberate.
Not hiding.
Almost inviting them to follow.
Daniel motioned for them to stay back.
He climbed the stairs.
A door slammed.
They rushed upstairs.
The hallway was empty.
Except for one thing.
An envelope lay on the floor.
Elena picked it up.
Her name.
Again.
She opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
It showed Elena as a child.
Standing beside her father.
Behind them was Marcus Vale.
But that wasn't what frightened her.
A fourth person stood in the photograph.
A woman.
Elena didn't recognize her.
Damian looked at the image.
“Who is that?”
Elena stared.
“I don't know.”
Daniel turned the photograph over.
There was a date.
June 14, 1998.
And one sentence:
Your mother knew.
Elena's heart stopped.
“My mother?”
Daniel looked at her.
“Elena…”
She shook her head.
“My mother died when I was six.”
“Yes.”
“She couldn't have known.”
Damian pointed toward the photograph.
“Then who took this?”
No one answered.
That night, Elena returned to the archive alone.
She couldn't stop thinking about the woman.
Her mother had supposedly died in an accident.
A car crash.
No survivors.
No witnesses.
No suspicious circumstances.
At least, that was what she had been told.
Elena opened the oldest family file.
Her mother's death certificate was there.
So was the accident report.
But something was missing.
The photograph from the crime scene.
She searched again.
Nothing.
Then she noticed a small handwritten note attached to the back of the report.
Body identification conducted privately.
Elena's heart raced.
She called Daniel.
“Pull the original accident records.”
“It's two in the morning.”
“Daniel.”
“I'll do it.”
Twenty minutes later, he called back.
“There is something strange.”
“What?”
“The official report says your mother died at 11:42 p.m.”
“Yes.”
“But the hospital admission record lists an unidentified woman arriving at 11:17 p.m.”
Elena went cold.
“What?”
“And there's no record of your mother entering the hospital.”
Silence.
Daniel continued.
“The body was identified by a family representative.”
“Who?”
Daniel hesitated.
“Your grandfather.”
Elena closed her eyes.
Her entire childhood suddenly felt like a lie.
The next morning, she confronted Adrian's old attorney.
The elderly man lived alone outside the city.
When Elena showed him the photograph, he immediately became pale.
“You shouldn't have that.”
“Why?”
He stood.
“Who gave it to you?”
“Answer me.”
He looked toward the window.
“Your mother didn't die that night.”
Elena stopped breathing.
“What?”
“She disappeared.”
“Why?”
“Because she discovered what your grandfather was doing.”
“What was he doing?”
The old attorney whispered:
“Building the company behind Voss Global.”
Elena stepped closer.
“Who controlled it?”
He looked at her.
“You already know.”
“Marcus Vale.”
The attorney nodded.
“He wasn't your grandfather's partner.”
“What was he?”
The old man's voice trembled.
“His master.”
Elena returned home before sunset.
Damian was waiting.
She didn't speak.
He knew immediately.
“What happened?”
“My mother may be alive.”
Damian stood.
“What?”
“My family lied about her death.”
“Why?”
“Because she found out about Marcus.”
Damian stared.
“And Marcus?”
Elena looked at him.
“He wasn't building an empire.”
“What was he building?”
She placed the photograph on the table.
“A succession plan.”
“For whom?”
Elena's eyes moved toward Damian.
“For you.”
Damian froze.
“What?”
She pointed to the document.
“Your first company.”
Then another.
“Your career.”
Another.
“Your marriage.”
Damian stared.
“You think Marcus arranged our marriage?”
“I don't know.”
“But you suspect it.”
“Yes.”
He looked at her.
“And if you're right?”
Elena's voice became quiet.
“Then our entire life together may have been part of his plan.”
A phone rang.
Neither of them moved.
It was Elena's private line.
The number was hidden.
She answered.
“Hello?”
Marcus spoke.
“Now you understand.”
Elena's blood ran cold.
“You've been watching us.”
“Always.”
“Where is my mother?”
A pause.
“Closer than you think.”
“Tell me where.”
“You're not ready.”
“You don't decide that.”
Marcus laughed softly.
“You still think you're fighting me.”
Elena tightened her grip on the phone.
“I'm not afraid of you.”
“I know.”
“Then why are you calling?”
“Because Damian is about to make a decision.”
She looked at Damian.
“What decision?”
Marcus said:
“Whether he wants his empire back.”
Damian's expression changed.
Marcus continued.
“Or whether he wants to know why I gave it to him in the first place.”
The call ended.
Elena stared at the phone.
Damian whispered:
“What does he mean?”
Before Elena could answer, every television in the house switched on.
A live broadcast appeared.
The Voss Global logo filled the screen.
Then it disappeared.
A new symbol replaced it.
A crown.
A message appeared.
THE GAME WAS NEVER ABOUT MONEY.
Then another.
IT WAS ABOUT WHO WOULD INHERIT THE MACHINE.
Damian looked at Elena.
She looked back.
And somewhere beneath the city, behind walls neither of them knew existed, a server came alive.
One file opened.
SUCCESSOR: DAMIAN PIERCE
SECONDARY SUCCESSOR: ELENA VOSS
STATUS: BOTH ACTIVE
Then a final line appeared.
FINAL PHASE READY.
Elena stared at the screen.
Her voice barely came out.
“There's another company.”
Damian nodded.
“Behind Voss Global.”
“No.”
She shook her head.
“Behind that.”
The screen went black.
And for the first time, Elena understood the truth.
Voss Global had never been the empire.
May you like
It had only been the door.
And someone had just opened it.
