Chapter 7 — Elena's Last Warning

Chapter 7 — Elena's Last Warning

Elena read the message twice.

Then a third time.

He is coming for Maya tonight.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Damian was the first to move.

“Where is she?”

Daniel shook his head.

“We don't know.”

“Then find her.”

“I've already tried.”

“Try again.”

Damian's voice cracked across the room.

Daniel stared at him.

“You're not the only one who wants her found.”

Damian stopped.

Elena watched him carefully.

Something had changed in him.

The empire no longer mattered.

The money no longer mattered.

For the first time since Elena had known him, Damian looked like a man who had discovered something more valuable than power.

A daughter.

Perhaps his daughter.

A child he hadn't even known existed.

Elena picked up the phone.

“Call Veronica.”

“She won't speak to anyone except the authorities.”

“Then we'll go to her.”

Daniel hesitated.

“Elena, if Marcus really is moving tonight—”

“I know.”

She looked toward the window.

“We're already late.”

The police station was almost empty when they arrived.

Veronica sat inside an interview room.

Her hair was disheveled.

Her expensive clothes were gone.

For the first time, Elena saw her without the armor she had worn for years.

Veronica looked exhausted.

She raised her eyes when Elena entered.

“You came.”

Elena sat across from her.

“Where is Maya?”

Veronica's lips trembled.

“I don't know.”

“You said Marcus was coming for her.”

“He is.”

“Then tell me where she is.”

“I can't.”

“Why?”

Veronica looked at Damian.

Her expression broke.

“Because if I tell you, he'll know.”

Damian stepped closer.

“Who?”

“Everyone.”

He frowned.

Veronica whispered:

“Marcus has people everywhere.”

Elena's voice became colder.

“Then start with what you know.”

Veronica looked at her.

“Maya is at a boarding school.”

Damian froze.

“What school?”

Veronica gave the name.

Daniel immediately typed it into his phone.

Then his expression changed.

“What?”

He turned the screen toward Elena.

The school had closed three months earlier.

“Where is Maya now?”

Veronica shook her head.

“I moved her.”

“When?”

“Yesterday.”

“Where?”

“I can't tell you.”

Damian slammed his hand onto the table.

“She is my daughter.”

Veronica flinched.

“You don't know that.”

“I know enough.”

“No.”

Veronica looked directly at him.

“You don't know anything.”

Damian stopped.

Veronica's eyes filled with tears.

“You think Marcus chose you because you were special.”

She laughed bitterly.

“He chose you because you were useful.”

Damian said nothing.

Veronica continued.

“And Maya…”

Her voice broke.

“Maya was the one thing he could never control.”

Elena leaned forward.

“Tell me the truth.”

Veronica looked at her.

“Which truth?”

“All of it.”

Veronica closed her eyes.

“Your mother came to me eleven years ago.”

Elena's heart tightened.

“She knew Marcus was preparing something.”

“What?”

“Your marriage.”

Elena froze.

“Damian's rise.”

Another pause.

“The transfer of the Voss assets.”

Veronica swallowed.

“She knew everything.”

“And she asked you to help?”

“Yes.”

“What did you do?”

“I agreed.”

“Why?”

“Because I owed her my life.”

Elena stared.

Veronica continued.

“Amelia discovered that Marcus had been monitoring Damian since he was twenty-two.”

“She knew he would eventually be placed inside Voss Global.”

“She also knew Marcus intended to use you.”

Elena whispered:

“For what?”

“To destroy the Voss family from inside.”

Damian's jaw tightened.

“So I was the weapon.”

“Yes.”

“And Elena?”

Veronica looked at her.

“You were the target.”

The words settled over the room.

Elena remembered the years.

Every humiliation.

Every time Damian had dismissed her.

Every board meeting where people laughed at her.

Every time she had been told she didn't understand business.

Perhaps that had never been accidental.

Marcus had built Damian's confidence so carefully that he had never questioned the source of it.

And Elena had been pushed into the shadows.

Ignored.

Discredited.

Made invisible.

Until she became the one person nobody thought would fight back.

Veronica looked at her.

“Your mother believed you would eventually discover the truth.”

“When?”

“When Damian's empire reached its peak.”

Elena frowned.

“Why?”

“Because that was when Marcus planned to activate the final transfer.”

“What transfer?”

Veronica's expression changed.

“The entire Voss structure.”

Elena went still.

“To whom?”

Veronica didn't answer.

Elena understood.

“Maya.”

Veronica nodded.

Damian stood abruptly.

“You're saying my daughter was supposed to inherit everything?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Marcus believed blood was the only thing that could preserve the system.”

Damian stared.

“What blood?”

Veronica looked at Elena.

Then at Damian.

“Maya carries both lines.”

Elena's heart stopped.

“What do you mean?”

“She is a Pierce.”

Damian's face changed.

“And a Vale.”

Silence.

Elena whispered:

“Not Voss?”

“No.”

Veronica shook her head.

“Your mother protected Maya because Maya was the bridge between the families.”

Damian stepped backward.

“And Marcus?”

“He believes Maya belongs to him.”

A violent pounding came from the hallway.

Everyone turned.

Daniel opened the door.

An officer stood there.

“Ms. Voss?”

“Yes?”

“We need to move you.”

“Why?”

The officer's expression was grim.

“Someone just attempted to access the station's security system.”

Daniel immediately reached for his phone.

“Marcus.”

The officer nodded.

“We don't know.”

Elena looked at Veronica.

“Get her out.”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

Elena stared.

“Why?”

“Because that's exactly what someone wants us to do.”

A second later, the lights went out.

The hallway erupted in shouting.

Doors slammed.

Alarms screamed.

Then a gunshot echoed somewhere downstairs.

Veronica covered her mouth.

Damian grabbed Elena.

“Stay behind me.”

She pushed his arm away.

“No.”

Another shot.

Then silence.

Daniel opened the door slightly.

The corridor was empty.

But every camera had been disabled.

Elena whispered:

“He's here.”

They escaped through a service corridor.

Daniel led them into an underground parking area.

A black SUV waited.

They climbed inside.

“Where are we going?” Damian asked.

Daniel started the engine.

“To find Maya.”

“How?”

“Veronica knows.”

Everyone looked at her.

She closed her eyes.

“There is a house.”

“What house?”

“My mother's.”

Elena froze.

“Amelia?”

Veronica nodded.

“She gave it to me eleven years ago.”

“Where?”

Veronica whispered the address.

Elena recognized it.

A small coastal town.

The place where her mother had spent summers when Elena was a child.

She had forgotten it existed.

The house was empty.

No lights.

No cars.

No signs of life.

Damian entered first.

Elena followed.

The walls were covered with old photographs.

One showed Amelia.

Another showed Veronica.

Then one showed Maya as a baby.

Damian stopped.

He touched the photograph.

His hand trembled.

“That's her.”

Elena looked at him.

“How do you know?”

“I just know.”

Veronica stood behind them.

“She has your eyes.”

Damian swallowed.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because Marcus would have killed her.”

“You could have told me.”

“And what would you have done?”

Damian didn't answer.

Veronica continued.

“You would have fought him.”

“Yes.”

“And you would have lost.”

He looked at her.

“I didn't know how powerful he was.”

“No.”

Veronica shook her head.

“Neither did I.”

Elena searched the house.

She found a bedroom.

Inside was a desk.

On the desk lay a letter.

Her mother's handwriting.

She opened it.

Elena,

If you have reached this house, Marcus has finally forced my hand.

Elena read faster.

I need you to understand why I kept Maya from you.

She is not simply a child. She is evidence.

Elena stopped.

Evidence of what?

She continued.

Her birth proves that Marcus's system was never purely financial.

He created a bloodline.

A succession line that could survive him.

Elena's hands shook.

The next sentence was worse.

Maya's father is not Marcus.

Elena froze.

Damian looked at her.

“What?”

She handed him the letter.

He read.

His face went pale.

The letter continued.

I allowed everyone to believe Marcus was Maya's father because it was the only way to keep the real father alive.

Damian stared.

“No.”

Elena's heart pounded.

The next words were unmistakable.

Damian, if Elena has shown you this letter, then you deserve the truth.

Maya is your daughter.

Damian stopped breathing.

He read the sentence again.

Then again.

He sat down.

Veronica began crying.

“I wanted to tell you.”

Damian looked at her.

“Why didn't you?”

“Because I was threatened.”

“By Marcus?”

“Yes.”

“What did he threaten?”

Veronica looked at Maya's photograph.

“Her life.”

Damian's eyes filled with tears.

“I had a daughter.”

Veronica nodded.

“For sixteen years.”

He covered his face.

Elena watched him.

She had spent years believing Damian had no softness left.

Now she saw it.

A broken man realizing he had missed an entire childhood.

First steps.

Birthdays.

School plays.

Illnesses.

Every ordinary moment.

All gone.

Damian looked at Veronica.

“Where is she?”

Veronica finally answered.

“She was supposed to be here.”

Everyone froze.

“What do you mean?”

“I brought her here yesterday.”

Elena turned toward the hallway.

“She's gone.”

Veronica nodded.

“She disappeared two hours ago.”

Daniel immediately checked the cameras.

“They were disabled.”

“By Marcus?”

“I don't know.”

Elena walked outside.

On the porch lay a small silver pendant.

The same pendant from the photograph.

She picked it up.

There was blood on it.

Damian saw it.

His face changed.

“Maya.”

They followed the trail into the woods.

Daniel found footprints.

Two sets.

One adult.

One smaller.

Then tire tracks.

A vehicle had waited nearby.

Elena looked at the road.

“He took her.”

Veronica shook her head.

“No.”

“What?”

“Maya wouldn't go with a stranger.”

“Then who?”

Veronica looked terrified.

“She would go with one person.”

Elena understood.

“Who?”

Veronica whispered:

“Me.”

Silence.

Damian turned slowly.

“What are you saying?”

“I didn't tell you everything.”

Veronica reached into her coat.

She pulled out a second phone.

A message was displayed.

BRING ELENA TO THE OLD STATION.

Below it:

COME ALONE.

Elena stared.

Marcus.

He wasn't taking Maya.

He was using Maya to bring Elena.

They drove to the old station.

Elena insisted on going alone.

Damian refused.

“You're not going without me.”

“If he sees you—”

“I don't care.”

“He wants me.”

“Then he gets both of us.”

Elena looked at him.

“You could die.”

“So could you.”

She had no answer.

Daniel stayed nearby.

Veronica remained in the car.

The station was abandoned.

Broken windows.

Rusting tracks.

Silence.

Elena walked inside.

“Marcus?”

No answer.

Then a light turned on.

A man appeared at the far end.

Not Marcus.

Elena stopped.

The man smiled.

“Ms. Voss.”

“Where is Maya?”

“She is safe.”

“Where?”

“Close.”

Elena's eyes narrowed.

“You work for Marcus.”

“Yes.”

“What does he want?”

The man smiled.

“You.”

Then another voice came through the station speakers.

Marcus.

“Elena.”

She froze.

“I warned you.”

“You threatened me.”

“No.”

His voice was calm.

“I warned you that the truth would cost you everything.”

“You already took everything.”

“No.”

A pause.

“I took Damian's empire.”

Another pause.

“But you still have something I need.”

“What?”

“The final key.”

Elena looked at the black ledger in her hand.

“You mean this?”

Marcus laughed.

“No.”

The lights suddenly switched on.

A screen appeared.

Maya was sitting in a chair.

Alive.

Terrified.

Elena's heart stopped.

Damian stepped forward.

“Maya!”

The girl looked toward the camera.

“Dad?”

Damian froze.

His eyes filled with tears.

Marcus's voice returned.

“Now you understand.”

Elena stepped toward the screen.

“Let her go.”

“I will.”

“When?”

“When you give me what belongs to me.”

Elena's voice became cold.

“Nothing belongs to you.”

Marcus laughed.

“That's where you're wrong.”

The screen changed.

A document appeared.

It was the original ownership agreement.

The Voss empire.

The Pierce assets.

Crown Meridian.

Everything.

And beneath the signatures was one final clause.

In the event of succession failure, all assets transfer to the biological descendant of Richard Pierce and Marcus Vale.

Elena stared.

“That's impossible.”

Marcus answered:

“It isn't.”

She looked at Damian.

Then at Maya.

Then at the document.

Marcus continued:

“Your grandfather and I created the machine.”

Elena's blood ran cold.

“Richard Pierce wasn't Damian's grandfather by blood.”

“What?”

Marcus's voice became softer.

“Richard adopted him.”

Damian stared at the screen.

“No.”

“Damian is my son.”

Silence.

Elena felt the world disappear beneath her feet.

Marcus Vale wasn't merely the man who built Damian's empire.

He was Damian's biological father.

The entire succession plan suddenly made sense.

Damian.

Maya.

Marcus.

The bloodline.

The empire.

The missing billion.

Everything connected.

Marcus continued:

“You spent your life believing Damian was your enemy.”

Elena looked at Damian.

“And he spent his believing I was his enemy.”

Marcus laughed.

“You were both wrong.”

The screen went black.

Then one final message appeared.

MIDNIGHT.

BRING THE LEDGER.

COME WITHOUT THE POLICE.

OR MAYA DIES.

Elena stared at the words.

Damian looked at her.

“What are we going to do?”

Elena closed the ledger.

Her expression became calm.

Too calm.

“We're going to give Marcus exactly what he wants.”

Damian frowned.

“And then?”

Elena looked toward the dark screen.

“Then I'm going to give him something he never expected.”

“What?”

May you like

She held up the ledger.

“My last warning.”
