Chapter 1: The Declaration

Chapter 1: The Declaration

The ballroom remained frozen in silence.

No one dared breathe.

The crystal chandeliers above reflected hundreds of tiny lights across the polished marble floor, where a thick lock of Hannah Brooks's dark hair lay like a discarded piece of dignity.

Daniel Carver stood beside her.

His expensive charcoal jacket rested gently over her trembling shoulders, covering the plain black maid's uniform that suddenly seemed far too thin for the cold that had settled inside the room.

Claire Whitlock forced a smile.

"Daniel," she laughed nervously, "everyone knows I was only joking."

Daniel didn't answer.

His eyes never left Hannah.

A faint red mark stretched across her left temple where the scissors had grazed her skin.

Her hands remained protectively wrapped around the child growing beneath her apron.

Only then did he notice something else.

She was shaking.

Not with anger.

With fear.

The realization struck him harder than any bullet ever had.

She wasn't afraid of Claire.

She was afraid of what stress might do to her unborn child.

Daniel slowly reached into his pocket and withdrew a clean white handkerchief.

Without asking permission, he gently dabbed away the tiny line of blood near Hannah's hairline.

"I'm sorry," he said quietly.

Hannah looked up in surprise.

The most feared man in Providence...

...was apologizing to a maid.

"It's only a scratch," she whispered.

"No."

His voice was calm.

"It isn't."

The room erupted into murmurs.

Guests exchanged nervous glances.

Business partners who had negotiated millions with Daniel Carver had never once heard him apologize.

Yet here he was...

...kneeling slightly so he could look into the eyes of a housekeeper.

Claire's cheeks flushed crimson.

"Daniel!"

He finally turned toward her.

His expression had become terrifyingly blank.

"What possessed you?"

She blinked.

"What?"

"What made you believe you had the right to touch someone who works in my home?"

Claire laughed again, though it sounded forced.

"She's a servant."

"So?"

The single word echoed across the ballroom.

Claire folded her arms.

"She embarrassed me."

"How?"

"She spilled champagne on my dress."

Every pair of eyes turned toward Hannah.

Hannah swallowed.

"I... I apologized immediately."

Claire scoffed.

"She ruined a dress worth fifteen thousand dollars."

Daniel glanced down.

The pale gold stain barely covered the hem.

His gaze lifted again.

"So you cut her hair."

Claire hesitated.

"It was a lesson."

"No."

His voice remained almost gentle.

"It was cruelty."

The word struck Claire harder than a slap.

"You can't be serious."

"I am completely serious."

She stepped closer.

"You are humiliating me."

Daniel looked around the ballroom.

"Interesting."

"What does that mean?"

"You had no objection humiliating her in front of forty guests."

Claire opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

For the first time in years...

...she found herself unable to answer.

Martin Hale quietly appeared beside Hannah.

"Miss Brooks," he whispered, "perhaps we should escort you upstairs."

Before Hannah could move—

A sharp pain twisted through her abdomen.

She gasped.

Daniel caught her instantly.

"What happened?"

"I'm fine."

"You nearly collapsed."

"It's just..."

She winced.

"...the baby."

Every muscle in Daniel's body tightened.

"When did the pain start?"

"A few minutes ago."

"And you said nothing?"

"I didn't want to interrupt the party."

The answer made several women in the audience lower their eyes in shame.

Daniel looked toward his head of security.

"Marcus."

A tall man in a black suit stepped forward immediately.

"Yes, sir."

"Call Dr. Abrams."

"Already on it."

"And prepare my car."

Marcus nodded.

Claire stared in disbelief.

"You're canceling our engagement party?"

Daniel answered without even looking at her.

"If necessary."

Her face drained of color.

"For a maid?"

He slowly stood.

"No."

His eyes hardened.

"For a pregnant woman in pain."

Claire laughed bitterly.

"This is absurd."

Daniel finally faced her.

"Do you know what I find absurd?"

She crossed her arms.

"What?"

"That the woman I intended to marry finds entertainment in humiliating someone who cannot defend herself."

"You don't understand."

"Then explain."

Claire hesitated.

Every excuse suddenly sounded childish.

Finally she snapped,

"She should know her place."

Silence.

Daniel took one slow step toward her.

"So should you."

The words landed like thunder.

Claire stared at him.

"What did you say?"

"I said..."

His voice became ice.

"...you should know yours."

The ballroom fell deathly still.

No one had ever heard Daniel speak to Claire that way.

Not once.

She whispered,

"You would choose a servant over me?"

Daniel answered immediately.

"I will always choose decency over cruelty."

Those words spread through the room like wildfire.

Several guests quietly placed their champagne glasses onto nearby tables.

Nobody wanted to appear supportive of Claire anymore.

Claire noticed.

And hated it.

"You've embarrassed me."

Daniel nodded once.

"As you embarrassed Hannah."

"They're not the same."

"They are."

"No!"

"They are exactly the same."

Claire's breathing quickened.

"You owe me an apology."

Daniel studied her for several seconds.

Then he spoke words that changed the evening forever.

"No."

Another painful contraction bent Hannah forward.

Daniel immediately returned to her side.

Without hesitation...

...he lifted her into his arms.

Gasps filled the ballroom.

The most powerful crime boss in Rhode Island was carrying a pregnant maid through his mansion as though she were the most precious thing in the world.

Hannah's face burned with embarrassment.

"Mr. Carver..."

"It's Daniel."

"I can't."

"You don't need to."

"The guests..."

"Are irrelevant."

"I can walk."

"You've already tried."

"I don't want people talking."

He looked down at her.

"They already are."

She couldn't argue with that.

As he carried her toward the grand entrance, the crowd instinctively moved aside.

No one blocked his path.

Not even Claire.

She stood frozen near the staircase.

Her engagement ring suddenly felt heavier than stone.

Just before Daniel reached the doors, he stopped.

Without turning around, he addressed the room.

"I expect every member of my staff to be treated with respect."

His voice carried effortlessly through the silent ballroom.

"Anyone who believes otherwise..."

A dangerous pause followed.

"...is no longer welcome under my roof."

Everyone understood exactly who he meant.

Claire's breathing caught.

"Daniel..."

He continued walking.

The massive oak doors opened.

Cold autumn air rushed inside.

Marcus held the rear door of the black armored sedan while Martin carefully gathered a blanket from the foyer.

As Daniel settled Hannah into the back seat, she looked at him with confused eyes.

"Why are you doing this?"

He paused before answering.

"Because someone should have done it sooner."

The convoy disappeared into the rainy Providence night.

Back inside the mansion...

No music played.

No one spoke.

Claire stood alone beneath the glittering chandeliers.

The severed lock of Hannah's hair still lay on the marble floor.

For the first time in her life...

Claire Whitlock realized she had not merely insulted a servant.

She had challenged the one line Daniel Carver would never allow anyone to cross.

And somewhere deep inside the darkness surrounding the Carver empire...

Old secrets had already begun to awaken.
