Chapter 13: The Child They Chose

Chapter 13: The Child They Chose
The morning after the truth became public, the Carver Estate felt less like a home and more like a fortress under siege.
Television helicopters circled overhead.
Reporters camped outside the iron gates.
Every newspaper carried the same photograph—Daniel standing beside Hannah on the balcony, his hand resting protectively over her pregnant belly.
The headlines called it the scandal of the decade.
Daniel called it something else.
"A distraction."
Marcus nodded.
"They're using the media to keep our attention here."
Daniel looked at the security monitors lining the wall.
"Which means they're planning something somewhere else."
For the first time in years, Ben Carter wasn't allowed to leave the estate.
The eight-year-old sat on the floor of the library with a chessboard in front of him.
He sighed dramatically.
"I'm officially the most protected kid in Rhode Island."
Hannah smiled as she moved a pawn.
"That sounds exhausting."
"It is."
Ben frowned at the board.
"You've gotten better."
"I've had a good teacher."
He grinned proudly.
"I told you."
For a few precious minutes, the war outside disappeared.
Daniel stood in the doorway, watching them quietly.
Ben laughed.
Hannah smiled.
It looked...
Normal.
A family.
Daniel had almost forgotten what that looked like.
Across the city...
Claire Whitlock sat inside an abandoned mansion overlooking the harbor.
The engagement ring she had returned to Daniel now rested in a velvet box on the table.
Vincent Moretti entered without knocking.
"You've been watching them."
Claire didn't deny it.
"They look happy."
Vincent poured himself a drink.
"Happiness creates weakness."
Claire stared at the surveillance photographs.
Daniel shielding Hannah.
Daniel visiting Caleb.
Daniel teaching Ben to throw a baseball in the garden.
She tapped the last photograph.
"The boy."
Vincent followed her gaze.
"Ben Carter."
"He isn't Daniel's son."
"No."
"But Daniel protects him."
Vincent smiled.
"Like family."
Claire slowly stood.
"If Daniel won't surrender for himself..."
She looked toward the window.
"...he'll surrender for a child."
Daniel spent the afternoon reviewing Caleb's journal.
Hidden among the coded transactions was another message.
This one had never been deciphered.
Caleb studied the page.
"I almost have it."
Daniel waited.
After several minutes, Caleb suddenly froze.
"Oh no."
"What?"
Caleb quickly wrote the decoded letters beneath the numbers.
The message appeared.
THE SPARE CHILD IS THE LEVER.
Daniel frowned.
"The spare child?"
Caleb's face turned white.
"They don't mean your baby."
Daniel's heart sank.
"Ben."
Daniel rushed toward the library.
Empty.
The chessboard remained on the floor.
One white knight had rolled beneath the sofa.
"Hannah!"
She appeared from the hallway.
"Where's Ben?"
Her smile faded.
"I thought he was with Martin."
Daniel turned.
"Marcus!"
The security chief ran in immediately.
"Find Ben."
Within seconds, alarms echoed through the mansion.
Every guard began searching.
Five minutes.
Ten.
Fifteen.
Nothing.
Martin finally stumbled into the foyer, pale and shaken.
"I only left him for a minute."
"What happened?"
"There was a delivery."
"I signed for flowers."
"When I came back..."
His voice broke.
"...he was gone."
Marcus reviewed the surveillance footage.
Every camera showed Ben playing in the library.
Then...
At exactly 2:17 p.m...
Every screen turned to static.
Seven seconds.
When the image returned...
Ben had vanished.
Marcus looked at Daniel.
"Same method as before."
"The insider."
Daniel nodded.
"They still have someone feeding them information."
Just then...
The main phone rang.
No one moved.
It rang again.
Daniel answered.
"Carver."
Claire's voice filled the room.
"Hello, Daniel."
Every muscle in his body tensed.
"Where's Ben?"
"Safe."
"If you've hurt him—"
"I haven't."
She sounded strangely calm.
"But I will."
Silence.
Then Ben's frightened voice came through the line.
"Mr. Carver?"
Daniel closed his eyes in relief.
"I'm here."
"I'm sorry."
"You have nothing to apologize for."
The phone changed hands again.
Claire spoke softly.
"I want to make a trade."
"What do you want?"
"You."
Marcus shook his head immediately.
Daniel ignored him.
"Explain."
"You come alone."
"No weapons."
"No guards."
"No police."
"And Ben walks free."
Daniel's voice became ice.
"If this is a trap—"
"It is."
Claire interrupted.
"I'm not pretending otherwise."
She gave an address.
Saint Michael's Orphanage.
Abandoned for nearly twenty years.
"You have one hour."
The line went dead.
Hannah stared at Daniel.
"You can't go."
"I have to."
"It's exactly what they want."
"I know."
She stepped closer.
"They'll kill you."
"Maybe."
Her eyes filled with tears.
"Our baby needs you."
"So does Ben."
Silence settled between them.
Finally Hannah whispered,
"You always choose everyone else."
Daniel gently touched her cheek.
"If I stop protecting children..."
His voice softened.
"...then I've become the monster people already think I am."
One hour later...
Daniel arrived alone.
The orphanage stood silent beneath gray autumn skies.
Broken stained-glass windows reflected the fading afternoon light.
The front doors creaked open.
Claire waited inside.
She wore a black coat.
No jewelry.
No engagement ring.
Only cold determination.
"You came."
"You knew I would."
"Yes."
She looked almost sad.
"I always knew who you really were."
Daniel glanced around.
"Where's Ben?"
"Upstairs."
A small voice echoed from above.
"Mr. Carver!"
Daniel looked toward the second floor.
Ben stood tied to a chair near a broken window.
He wasn't alone.
Four armed men surrounded him.
Vincent Moretti stepped from the shadows.
"Welcome."
Daniel's expression hardened.
"So that's your partner."
Vincent smiled.
"Your former fiancée has become surprisingly persuasive."
Claire looked away.
For just a second...
Guilt flickered across her face.
Then it disappeared.
Vincent raised a pistol.
"Here's how this ends."
He pointed toward Daniel.
"You kneel."
Daniel didn't move.
"Or..."
Vincent shifted the gun toward Ben.
"...the boy dies."
Ben tried to stay brave.
But tears rolled silently down his cheeks.
"I'm sorry," he whispered.
Daniel looked directly at him.
"Ben."
The little boy met his eyes.
"This isn't your fault."
Daniel slowly raised both hands.
Then...
Very deliberately...
He lowered himself onto one knee.
Claire stared in disbelief.
The most feared man in Providence...
Had surrendered.
Not for power.
Not for money.
Not even for Hannah.
For a frightened little boy who shared none of his blood.
Vincent smiled triumphantly.
"I knew you would."
Daniel kept his eyes on Ben.
"Let him go."
Vincent laughed.
"You still think I make honest deals?"
He pulled back the hammer of his pistol.
Claire's expression changed instantly.
"Vincent..."
"You promised—"
"I promised nothing."
The gun pointed at Ben.
Time seemed to stop.
Then, from somewhere outside the orphanage...
A single sniper shot shattered the silence.
The bullet struck Vincent's pistol, sending it spinning across the room.
Every window exploded inward.
Marcus's voice thundered through the building.
"CARVER SECURITY! DROP YOUR WEAPONS!"
The rescue had begun.
But Daniel realized too late...
May you like
The sniper hadn't been one of his men.
Someone else had just entered the war.
