Chapter 15: The Face Behind the Mask

Chapter 15: The Face Behind the Mask
The ambulance raced through the rain toward St. Matthew's Hospital.
Inside, Dr. Abrams monitored Hannah's contractions while Daniel sat beside her, refusing to let go of her hand.
"Stay with me," he whispered.
Hannah forced a faint smile despite the pain.
"I'm not the one who was shot."
"You've always worried about everyone else."
"So have you."
Another contraction swept through her body.
Daniel's heart clenched.
Dr. Abrams looked up.
"The medication is slowing the labor."
Daniel held his breath.
"And the baby?"
"For now..."
The doctor nodded.
"...the baby is still stable."
Daniel finally exhaled.
Three hours later...
Hannah was resting under close observation.
The contractions had stopped.
The immediate danger had passed.
Only then did Marcus quietly knock on Daniel's hospital room door.
He held the half-melted flash drive inside an evidence bag.
"We recovered this."
Daniel studied the scratched words.
FOR DANIEL ONLY.
"Has anyone opened it?"
Marcus shook his head.
"It requires biometric authentication."
Daniel frowned.
"My fingerprint?"
"It seems that way."
Back at the Carver Estate...
The underground command room had become the center of the investigation.
Marcus inserted the damaged flash drive into an isolated computer.
A prompt appeared.
AUTHORIZED USER REQUIRED
Daniel placed his thumb on the scanner.
A soft chime echoed.
The screen unlocked.
One video file.
Nothing else.
No title.
No date.
Daniel pressed play.
The screen flickered.
An older man appeared.
Gray hair.
Kind eyes.
A neatly pressed suit.
Daniel's face changed instantly.
"No..."
Marcus stared at the monitor.
"Who is he?"
Daniel answered quietly.
"Edward Sinclair."
For twenty years...
Edward Sinclair had been Daniel's personal attorney.
His legal adviser.
His financial guardian.
The man who had managed every legitimate business Daniel owned.
The man Daniel trusted almost as much as Marcus.
Edward looked directly into the camera.
"If you're watching this..."
He smiled sadly.
"...then I've probably been killed."
The room fell silent.
Edward continued.
"Daniel..."
"I owe you the truth."
"I should have told you years ago."
"But every time I tried..."
"They reminded me what would happen to my family."
Marcus leaned closer.
"They?"
Edward closed his eyes.
"The people behind the organization."
"The real organization."
Daniel frowned.
"I don't understand."
Edward seemed to answer him across time.
"You've spent years believing you built an empire."
"You didn't."
"You inherited one."
Another pause.
"But not from your father."
Daniel's heartbeat quickened.
"What?"
Edward continued.
"The Carver family was infiltrated twenty-three years ago."
"They needed your father."
"When he refused..."
"They murdered him."
Marcus slowly looked toward Daniel.
"You told me he died of a heart attack."
Daniel whispered,
"That's what I believed."
Edward nodded sadly on the recording.
"They forged every medical report."
"Just as they did with Aaron Brooks."
"They controlled judges."
"They controlled police."
"They controlled coroners."
"And eventually..."
"They controlled your organization."
Daniel clenched his fists.
"For twenty years..."
Edward looked directly into the camera.
"...your greatest enemy has been sitting beside you at every board meeting."
Marcus immediately paused the video.
"Board meeting."
He opened a list of current executives.
Six names.
Edward Sinclair.
Victor Kane.
Three financial directors.
One chief operating officer.
Daniel stared silently at the final name.
His breathing slowed.
"No."
Marcus followed his gaze.
Then his own face turned pale.
"It can't be."
The final name belonged to:
Samuel Grant.
Daniel's mentor.
His father's closest friend.
The man who had taught Daniel how to negotiate.
How to build businesses.
How to avoid unnecessary bloodshed.
The man who had attended every birthday.
Every funeral.
Every Christmas dinner.
For two decades...
Samuel Grant had been family.
Marcus shook his head.
"There has to be another explanation."
Daniel slowly pressed play again.
Edward's recorded image returned.
"If you're wondering whether Samuel Grant knows..."
A long silence.
"He doesn't merely know."
Another pause.
"He is The Accountant."
The words struck like a bullet.
Daniel stood motionless.
Marcus whispered,
"My God..."
Edward continued.
"He created the financial network."
"He ordered Aaron Brooks's murder."
"He approved Caleb Monroe's kidnapping."
"He manipulated Claire Whitlock."
"He even arranged the anonymous DNA report."
Daniel's voice barely existed.
"Why?"
Edward answered immediately.
"Because he believes your child threatens everything."
Hospital...
At that same moment...
A nurse quietly entered Hannah's room.
She smiled warmly.
"Good evening."
Hannah looked up from her book.
"I don't think I've seen you before."
"I'm filling in."
The nurse adjusted Hannah's IV bag.
Then glanced toward the hallway.
"You're very brave."
Hannah smiled politely.
"I don't feel brave."
"No."
The nurse whispered.
"But your baby is."
Something about her tone felt wrong.
Hannah looked closer.
The woman's hospital identification badge...
Had no photograph.
Only a name.
Too clean.
Too new.
The nurse reached into her pocket.
Not for medicine.
For another syringe.
Back in the command room...
Marcus's phone suddenly rang.
He answered immediately.
"What?"
His face drained of color.
He looked at Daniel.
"Hospital."
Daniel was already running.
Inside Hannah's room...
The fake nurse removed the protective cap from the syringe.
"This won't hurt."
Hannah slowly backed away on the bed.
"Who are you?"
The woman smiled.
"Someone following orders."
"What orders?"
She lifted the syringe.
"To make sure there is no Carver heir."
Before she could move—
The hospital door burst open.
Daniel tackled the woman before the needle reached Hannah.
The syringe flew across the room.
Marcus rushed in behind him.
The assassin fought viciously, pulling a hidden knife from her sleeve.
She slashed across Daniel's injured shoulder.
He didn't let go.
Within seconds, Marcus and two guards restrained her.
The woman laughed.
"You saved them today."
Blood dripped from Daniel's reopened wound.
"But you can't save them forever."
She bit down.
Marcus lunged forward.
"No!"
Too late.
Another cyanide capsule.
Another silent operative.
Dead before she hit the floor.
Daniel looked at Hannah.
She was trembling.
But alive.
He crossed the room and gently embraced her.
For a long moment, neither spoke.
Finally she whispered,
"How did they find me?"
Daniel closed his eyes.
"They always know."
His voice was heavy with grief.
"Because the man I've trusted for twenty years..."
He looked toward the rain falling outside the hospital window.
"...has been planning our destruction all along."
Far across Providence, inside a quiet office overlooking the harbor, Samuel Grant stood before the window with a glass of whiskey.
Victor Kane entered.
"The hospital attempt failed."
Samuel didn't turn around.
"I expected it would."
Victor frowned.
"Then why send her?"
Samuel smiled at his own reflection.
"Because Daniel needed to know the truth."
He set the glass down.
"Now he knows who I am."
Victor looked confused.
"You're not hiding anymore?"
Samuel finally turned.
His calm, grandfatherly expression had vanished.
Only cold calculation remained.
"I've spent twenty years building the perfect empire."
He buttoned his suit jacket.
"I'm tired of hiding behind accountants and shadows."
He picked up an old family photograph.
In it stood a young Daniel beside Samuel, smiling like father and son.
Samuel looked at it for one final moment.
Then calmly dropped it into the fireplace.
As the flames consumed the picture, he whispered,
May you like
"Now..."
"...the son finally gets to meet the man who murdered his father."
