Chapter 8: The Man Beneath the Warehouse

Chapter 8: The Man Beneath the Warehouse
The gunshot echoed through Union Station.
Passengers screamed.
Suitcases toppled across the marble floor as people ran for the exits.
Hannah stood frozen beside Locker 214, one hand instinctively shielding her swollen belly, the other clutching Caleb's journal against her chest.
The masked gunman fired again.
The bullet shattered the metal locker inches from her shoulder.
"Hannah!"
Daniel's voice cut through the chaos.
Before she could react, he reached her, wrapped one arm around her, and pulled her behind a row of concrete support columns.
The third shot ricocheted off the tile floor.
Marcus and two members of Daniel's security team burst through another entrance.
"Take them alive!" Daniel ordered.
The station erupted into chaos.
One gunman sprinted toward the rear exit.
Another disappeared down the subway stairs.
The third turned his weapon toward Daniel.
He never got the chance to fire.
Marcus tackled him to the ground.
Within seconds, the masked men scattered in three different directions.
"Boss!" Marcus shouted. "They've split up!"
Daniel didn't hesitate.
"Forget them."
Marcus blinked.
"What?"
"Hannah comes first."
He turned to Hannah, who was struggling to catch her breath.
"Are you hurt?"
She slowly shook her head.
"No..."
Then she looked down.
The journal was still in her hands.
She had protected it as instinctively as she had protected her baby.
Daniel noticed.
"Let's get out of here."
Twenty minutes later...
The guest cottage at the Carver Estate was surrounded by security.
Every entrance was guarded.
Marcus placed Caleb's journal on the dining table.
"No fingerprints except Hannah's."
Daniel nodded.
"Let's see what her brother died trying to protect."
Hannah looked up sharply.
"He isn't dead."
Marcus and Daniel exchanged a glance.
"You believe he's alive?" Daniel asked gently.
"I have to."
Her voice trembled.
"If I stop believing..."
She couldn't finish the sentence.
Daniel opened the journal.
Every page was packed with figures, shipping routes, account numbers, and handwritten notes.
It wasn't the work of a frightened amateur.
It was the meticulous record of a professional accountant.
Marcus pointed to several entries highlighted in red.
"These payments..."
Daniel leaned closer.
"They don't belong."
The transactions carried the names of legitimate shipping companies.
But the destination accounts...
Didn't exist.
"They're ghost accounts," Marcus said.
"Money goes in."
Daniel nodded.
"And disappears."
Hannah turned another page.
Folded between the sheets was a photograph.
She gasped.
"Caleb."
The picture showed her brother standing beside a warehouse.
His face looked thinner than she remembered.
But he was unmistakably alive.
On the back, someone had written a date.
Three weeks ago.
Hannah's eyes filled with tears.
"He was alive..."
Daniel took the photograph carefully.
"Where was this taken?"
Marcus studied the background.
"Wait..."
He zoomed in using his phone.
A faded company logo appeared on the warehouse wall.
Piermont Cold Storage.
Marcus looked at Daniel.
"That warehouse was abandoned years ago."
Daniel's expression hardened.
"So everyone believes."
An hour later...
Inside Daniel's underground command room...
Large satellite images covered an electronic display.
Marcus highlighted the warehouse.
"It's officially condemned."
"No employees."
"No deliveries."
"No utilities."
Daniel folded his arms.
"Too clean."
Marcus nodded.
"We checked thermal imaging."
He pressed another button.
The screen changed.
Bright patches of heat glowed beneath the building.
Daniel narrowed his eyes.
"Basement."
Marcus nodded.
"Someone's down there."
"How many?"
"At least six."
Daniel's gaze settled on one small heat signature isolated from the others.
A tiny square room beneath the foundation.
"What's that?"
Marcus enlarged the image.
"Only one person."
Silence filled the room.
Hannah stepped closer.
Her voice barely rose above a whisper.
"Caleb."
Daniel looked at her.
"We don't know that yet."
She pointed at the screen.
"He's alone."
"He could be anyone."
She shook her head.
"No."
Tears slipped down her cheeks.
"My brother hates being alone."
Marcus looked away.
Even hardened soldiers struggled to watch hope and fear collide in someone's eyes.
Daniel finally spoke.
"If Caleb is alive..."
He turned back toward the screen.
"...we're bringing him home."
Meanwhile...
Beneath Piermont Cold Storage...
Darkness filled the underground prison.
Water dripped steadily from cracked concrete walls.
Chains rattled softly.
Caleb Monroe leaned against the cold floor, too weak to stand.
His beard had grown long.
His face was bruised.
One eye remained swollen from yesterday's beating.
A steel tray slid beneath the door.
A stale piece of bread.
A bottle of water.
Nothing more.
The guard laughed.
"You still alive?"
Caleb ignored him.
"Your sister's stubborn."
Silence.
"She opened the locker."
Caleb's heart pounded.
The guard grinned.
"Just like we hoped."
Slowly...
Caleb lifted his head.
"What did you do?"
"We gave her something to find."
The guard crouched outside the bars.
"Now Daniel Carver is exactly where our boss wants him."
Caleb closed his eyes.
"No..."
The journal.
The photograph.
The anonymous messages.
None of it had been an accident.
It had all been bait.
Back at the mansion...
Daniel gathered twelve members of his security team.
Weapons were checked.
Body armor distributed.
Maps reviewed.
Marcus pointed toward the blueprint.
"The basement has only one confirmed entrance."
Daniel shook his head.
"No."
Marcus frowned.
"You found another?"
Daniel pointed to an old drainage tunnel leading beneath the harbor.
"It was built during Prohibition."
Marcus smiled.
"I wondered if you'd remember."
Daniel looked at the team.
"We split into two units."
He pointed.
"Marcus takes the main entrance."
Then to himself.
"I go through the tunnel."
Hannah immediately stood.
"I'm coming."
Every head turned toward her.
"No," Daniel said firmly.
"My brother is down there."
"You don't know that."
"I do."
Daniel stepped closer.
"Hannah."
She met his eyes.
"I've already lost my husband."
Her voice cracked.
"I'm not losing Caleb too."
Silence.
Finally Daniel answered.
"You have another life depending on you."
His eyes drifted toward her unborn child.
"I won't risk either of you."
She wanted to argue.
But deep inside...
She knew he was right.
That night...
Rain pounded the harbor as Daniel's convoy approached the abandoned warehouse.
Floodlights remained dark.
No signs of life.
Exactly as expected.
Marcus checked his watch.
"Teams in position."
Daniel adjusted the earpiece.
"Move."
The assault began.
Within seconds, Marcus's unit breached the front entrance.
Flashbang grenades exploded inside the warehouse.
Guards shouted.
Gunfire erupted.
Daniel slipped silently into the ancient drainage tunnel beneath the building.
Cold seawater reached his knees.
The narrow passage smelled of rust and salt.
Twenty yards ahead...
He found an iron ladder leading upward.
Above him...
Voices.
He climbed slowly.
One rung at a time.
Reaching the top, he eased open a rusted hatch.
A dimly lit basement stretched before him.
Three armed guards faced the opposite direction, distracted by the firefight upstairs.
Daniel moved like a shadow.
The first guard dropped without a sound.
The second reached for his weapon too late.
The third managed to shout—
"Intruder!"
The basement exploded into violence.
Daniel fought through the narrow corridor, closing the distance toward the final reinforced steel door at the end of the hall.
Behind it...
Someone was pounding desperately.
"Help!"
The voice was weak.
Hoarse.
Barely recognizable.
But Daniel stopped.
Because he'd seen Hannah's family photograph enough times to recognize it.
"Caleb?"
The pounding stopped instantly.
Silence.
Then, from behind the steel door...
A broken whisper.
"Hannah..."
Daniel's heart sank.
He had found him.
Alive.
But before he could force the lock open—
A deafening explosion ripped through the warehouse above.
The ceiling cracked.
Concrete rained down.
The lights went out.
May you like
And somewhere in the darkness...
A familiar voice began to laugh.
