Chapter 16: Fire Across Providence

Chapter 16: Fire Across Providence

The city woke to violence.

Before sunrise, three explosions rocked Providence's waterfront.

A Carver-owned shipping warehouse erupted into flames.

Minutes later, a convoy carrying medical supplies for one of Daniel's legitimate charities was ambushed on Interstate 95.

By eight o'clock, two restaurants that quietly paid protection to the Carver organization had been firebombed.

Every attack carried the same message.

The war had begun.

Inside the Carver Estate's underground command center, maps of Providence covered an entire wall.

Red lights blinked across the city's waterfront.

Marcus looked exhausted.

"We've confirmed eleven coordinated attacks."

Daniel stood with one arm in a sling, his reopened shoulder wound still fresh beneath the bandages.

"Casualties?"

Marcus hesitated.

"Three guards."

"They're alive."

"For now."

Daniel nodded once.

"Civilians?"

"None."

Daniel's expression remained unreadable.

"Good."

Caleb leaned over the map.

"These aren't random."

He pointed to each location.

"They're targeting supply lines."

Martin, who rarely attended strategy meetings, frowned.

"They're trying to bankrupt you."

Daniel slowly shook his head.

"No."

He traced a line connecting every attack.

"They're herding us."

Marcus looked closer.

Toward the center of the city.

"Samuel wants us to abandon the estate."

Across town...

Samuel Grant watched the morning news from his office.

Every television station repeated the same headline.

GANG WAR ERUPTS IN PROVIDENCE.

The reporters blamed Daniel Carver.

Exactly as Samuel had expected.

Victor Kane entered quietly.

"The police have issued warrants for twenty-three Carver associates."

Samuel smiled.

"And Daniel?"

"They're preparing a task force."

Samuel folded his hands.

"Excellent."

"The public always fears the man they can see."

He glanced toward the harbor.

"They never notice the man hiding behind the smoke."

At St. Matthew's Hospital...

Dr. Abrams checked Hannah's blood pressure one more time.

"The contractions have stopped."

She smiled with relief.

"And the baby?"

"Strong."

The heartbeat echoed through the examination room.

Steady.

Healthy.

Daniel stood silently beside her.

For the first time in days, he allowed himself to breathe.

Then his phone vibrated.

Marcus.

Daniel answered immediately.

"What happened?"

"They hit Pier Twelve."

Daniel's eyes hardened.

"Our relief warehouse?"

"Burned."

"And..."

Marcus paused.

"They left a message."

An hour later...

Daniel arrived at the blackened remains of the warehouse.

Firefighters continued spraying water over the smoking ruins.

Painted across one surviving wall in bright red letters were six simple words.

YOUR FAMILY DIES NEXT.

Hannah had insisted on staying at the estate.

Seeing the threat in person only deepened Daniel's resolve.

Marcus quietly approached.

"Media's already here."

Reporters shouted questions from behind police barriers.

"Mr. Carver!"

"Did you start this war?"

"Is your unborn child connected to these attacks?"

Daniel ignored every camera.

His attention settled on a small teddy bear lying untouched in the ashes.

Someone had placed it there deliberately.

A message.

Not to him.

To Hannah.

That evening...

Against Daniel's orders, Hannah left her room.

She found him alone in the mansion's greenhouse.

The autumn rain tapped softly against the glass roof.

He stood among rows of white roses, staring into the darkness.

"You haven't slept."

He smiled faintly.

"Neither have you."

She walked beside him.

"This isn't your fault."

He laughed quietly.

"Samuel murdered my father."

"Aaron."

"Almost killed you."

He looked down.

"Now the whole city is paying for my mistakes."

Hannah gently touched his uninjured arm.

"These were never your mistakes."

"They're his choices."

Daniel remained silent.

She continued.

"You've spent your life protecting people."

"Don't let him convince you that makes you guilty."

For a long moment, neither spoke.

Then Daniel asked softly,

"What if protecting people only puts them in danger?"

Hannah answered without hesitation.

"Then protect them anyway."

Meanwhile...

Claire Whitlock recovered in a private clinic outside Boston.

The bullet wound in her shoulder still ached.

She watched the news in silence.

Images of burning warehouses.

Armed police.

Daniel standing before reporters without answering a single question.

Vincent Moretti entered her room.

"You survived."

Claire looked at him coldly.

"You shot me."

"I shot a distraction."

"You nearly killed me."

Vincent shrugged.

"You lived."

Claire slowly reached beneath her blanket.

She revealed a small recording device.

"I recorded everything."

Vincent's smile faded.

"What?"

"Your confession."

Her voice remained calm.

"You admitted kidnapping Ben."

"You admitted planning the orphanage explosion."

She met his eyes.

"If anything happens to me..."

She smiled for the first time in weeks.

"...copies go to the FBI."

For the first time, Vincent Moretti looked genuinely uncomfortable.

Night fell over Providence.

Police sirens echoed through the streets.

Gunfire erupted along the docks.

Carver loyalists clashed with men secretly financed by Samuel Grant and Vincent Moretti.

Marcus watched the situation unfold from the command center.

"We're losing ground."

Daniel stood beside him.

"No."

Marcus looked surprised.

"We're not?"

Daniel pointed to the map.

"They're taking territory."

"But not money."

Marcus frowned.

Daniel continued.

"Samuel doesn't want my empire."

"He wants me away from Hannah."

Silence filled the room.

Then Caleb looked up suddenly.

"The hospital."

Daniel turned.

"What about it?"

Caleb flipped through his journal.

"I missed another code."

His finger stopped on a familiar sequence.

Slowly, he deciphered the words.

WHEN THE CITY BURNS... STRIKE THE MOTHER.

Daniel's blood ran cold.

"Hannah."

At that exact moment, every light inside the mansion went out.

Darkness swallowed the estate.

Emergency generators failed to start.

Marcus reached for his flashlight.

"They cut the power."

Then came the sound no one wanted to hear.

A window shattering upstairs.

Hannah was alone in the nursery.

She turned toward the broken glass just as three masked figures climbed silently into the room.

One of them whispered,

"Take her alive."

The nursery door burst open.

Ben stood there, clutching the wooden baseball bat Daniel had given him days earlier.

"Leave her alone!"

The men laughed.

The first attacker stepped toward the child.

Before he could reach him—

A gunshot thundered through the darkness.

The attacker collapsed instantly.

Daniel stood in the hallway, smoke rising from the barrel of his pistol.

His voice was colder than anyone had ever heard.

"You've entered my home."

Marcus and the security team flooded the corridor behind him.

The battle for Providence had finally reached the one place Daniel had sworn no enemy would ever touch.

And this time...

He had no intention of showing mercy.
