Chapter 14: A Mother's Choice

Chapter 14: A Mother's Choice

The sniper's bullet shattered Vincent Moretti's pistol.

For a heartbeat, everyone in the abandoned orphanage stood frozen.

Then chaos erupted.

Gunfire exploded through the corridors as Marcus and Daniel's security team stormed the building from three different entrances.

Broken glass rained across the floor.

Ben screamed.

"Mr. Carver!"

Daniel lunged toward the staircase.

Three gunmen blocked his path.

He fired twice, forcing them back, but another wave of bullets drove him behind a crumbling stone pillar.

"Marcus!" he shouted.

"The second floor!"

"I'm trying!"

Smoke from flash grenades rolled through the old hallways, reducing visibility to almost nothing.

Above them, Vincent smiled.

"This is exactly how I planned it."

Claire turned sharply.

"What?"

He calmly pulled a small remote control from his pocket.

"The boy was never the prize."

He pressed a button.

A shrill electronic beep echoed somewhere upstairs.

At the Carver Estate...

Hannah sat in the nursery, staring at Ben's unfinished chess game.

She couldn't shake the feeling that something was terribly wrong.

Then Caleb burst into the room, still pale from his injuries.

"Hannah!"

She stood immediately.

"What happened?"

"I remembered another code."

His breathing was uneven.

"In the journal."

"The one I couldn't finish."

"What did it say?"

Caleb swallowed hard.

"It wasn't about Ben."

"It was about the orphanage."

He handed her the notebook.

Across the page, the decoded message read:

IF THE CHILD IS TAKEN TO SAINT MICHAEL'S, THE BUILDING WILL BURN.

Hannah's face turned white.

"No..."

"They planted explosives months ago."

She didn't wait to hear another word.

Ignoring every doctor's warning, she grabbed her coat and ran.

Twenty minutes later...

The orphanage shook as another explosion blasted through the eastern wing.

Daniel stumbled, shielding his face from flying debris.

The old staircase groaned dangerously.

Above him, Ben cried out.

"I'm scared!"

Daniel looked up.

The wooden beams supporting the second floor had begun to crack.

Marcus reached his side.

"The building won't hold much longer."

Daniel glanced toward the collapsing ceiling.

"We're running out of time."

Then another voice echoed from outside.

"Daniel!"

He turned.

Hannah.

She stood in the broken doorway, breathless, one hand protecting her pregnant belly.

Daniel's face hardened.

"What are you doing here?"

She ignored the question.

"The building is rigged!"

"I know."

"No."

She shook her head.

"Not just this floor."

"The basement."

"There are gas lines."

Daniel's eyes widened.

"If the fire reaches them..."

"The entire building comes down."

Vincent watched from the second floor.

He laughed softly.

"Perfect."

Claire stared at Hannah in disbelief.

"She came?"

Vincent smiled.

"Love makes people predictable."

Claire looked toward Ben.

For the first time since joining Vincent, uncertainty crossed her face.

"This wasn't the deal."

Vincent didn't answer.

Instead...

He drew another hidden pistol.

Daniel turned to Hannah.

"You have to leave."

"I'm not leaving Ben."

"Hannah."

"I'm not leaving you either."

He stepped closer.

"Our baby needs you alive."

"Our baby needs a father."

Their eyes met.

Neither could convince the other.

Finally Daniel sighed.

"You've always been stubborn."

A faint smile touched Hannah's lips.

"I learned from the best."

Suddenly—

A massive wooden beam crashed between them.

The impact separated Hannah from Daniel.

Smoke filled the hallway.

She coughed, unable to see.

"Hannah!"

"I'm here!"

Another explosion.

The floor beneath Ben's chair splintered.

One of the ropes holding him snapped.

The chair tilted dangerously toward the broken window.

"Help!"

Without thinking...

Hannah climbed over the burning beam.

Every movement sent sharp pain through her abdomen.

Her doctor's warning echoed in her mind.

No stress. No climbing. No sudden movements.

She ignored all of it.

The only thing she saw was a frightened little boy.

Daniel fought desperately to reach them, but Vincent's men blocked every route.

Bullets chipped away at the walls around him.

Marcus shouted,

"We can't get through!"

Daniel looked toward Hannah.

She had almost reached Ben.

Only a few feet remained.

Then the floor beneath her cracked.

Wood splintered.

A section of the hallway collapsed into the burning basement below.

Hannah barely caught the edge with one hand.

The journal slipped from her pocket and disappeared into the flames.

"Hannah!"

Daniel's heart stopped.

She dangled above the inferno, her feet kicking helplessly in the air.

One hand clung desperately to the broken floor.

The other still protected her stomach.

She refused to let go.

Ben saw her struggling.

His own ropes had loosened enough for him to move.

Ignoring his fear, he twisted until he reached the broken leg of the chair.

He grabbed it.

Then stretched it toward Hannah.

"Take it!"

She looked up.

"It's too far."

"Please!"

Another piece of flooring collapsed.

Daniel roared,

"Hannah!"

She looked at Ben.

Then at Daniel.

Then closed her eyes.

With every ounce of strength she had left...

She swung her body forward.

Her fingers caught the chair leg.

Ben pulled with everything an eight-year-old possessed.

It wasn't enough.

But it slowed her fall.

Just enough.

Daniel finally broke through the gunfire.

He dove across the collapsing floor.

One hand seized Hannah's wrist.

Marcus grabbed Daniel's belt.

Two guards grabbed Marcus.

Together...

They pulled.

The floor gave way beneath them.

For one terrifying second, it seemed all four would fall.

Then Hannah was dragged onto solid ground.

She collapsed into Daniel's arms.

Neither spoke.

Neither could.

They simply held each other as the orphanage groaned around them.

Above them...

Claire watched in silence.

She had expected Hannah to run.

To save herself.

Instead...

The pregnant woman had risked everything for a child who wasn't even hers.

Claire whispered,

"Why?"

Vincent answered without emotion.

"Because she's weak."

Claire slowly shook her head.

"No."

She watched Daniel cradle Hannah protectively while Ben wrapped his arms around both of them.

For the first time...

Claire realized she had misunderstood everything.

Strength wasn't making people fear you.

Strength was choosing to protect them.

Even when it could cost your life.

Vincent raised his pistol again.

"If sentiment is over..."

He aimed directly at Daniel.

Before he could fire—

Claire stepped in front of the gun.

"No."

Vincent frowned.

"Move."

"I won't."

"You've changed."

She met his eyes.

"No."

Her voice was steady.

"I finally remembered who I was."

Vincent's expression turned cold.

"You've become a liability."

He pulled the trigger.

The shot echoed through the burning orphanage.

Claire gasped.

A crimson stain spread across her shoulder.

She collapsed.

Daniel looked up in shock.

Marcus shouted,

"Everyone out!"

The ceiling began to cave in.

Carrying Hannah in one arm and Ben with the other, Daniel raced toward the exit as Marcus's team covered their escape.

Behind them, flames swallowed the old orphanage.

Seconds after they reached the courtyard...

The building collapsed in a deafening roar.

As firefighters rushed toward the ruins, Hannah suddenly cried out in pain.

She doubled over, clutching her stomach.

Daniel's face drained of color.

"Hannah?"

Another contraction hit.

Dr. Abrams, who had arrived with the emergency crews, knelt beside her immediately.

"We have to move."

Daniel looked terrified.

"The baby?"

The doctor examined her quickly.

His expression grew grave.

"The stress has triggered labor."

Hannah reached for Daniel's hand.

"I'm scared."

He squeezed it tightly.

"So am I."

An ambulance raced toward St. Matthew's Hospital through screaming sirens.

Behind it, Marcus watched firefighters search the rubble.

No trace of Vincent Moretti had been found.

The Boston crime boss had vanished once again.

But as Marcus turned away, he noticed something lying in the ashes.

A small metal flash drive.

Half melted.

Still intact.

He picked it up carefully.

On its surface, someone had scratched three simple words:

FOR DANIEL ONLY.
