Chapter 10 – The Coldest Trap

Chapter 10 – The Coldest Trap

The convoy reached Riverside Medical Center at 1:17 a.m.

The abandoned hospital stood on the edge of the city like a forgotten monument. Broken windows stared into the darkness. Rusted ambulances remained parked beneath a collapsed emergency entrance.

Red and blue lights flashed across the cracked concrete.

FBI agents surrounded the building.

Detective Laura Bennett checked her weapon one final time.

"No one goes inside alone."

Amy nodded.

"I understand."

Alexander looked at her.

"No unnecessary risks."

She met his eyes.

"I'm done being someone else's victim."

Room Nineteen

The old hospital corridors smelled of dust and mold.

Flashlights swept across peeling paint and overturned hospital beds.

Every footstep echoed through the empty building.

"Second floor clear."

"West wing clear."

"Moving toward Room Nineteen."

Laura reached the faded door first.

The number 19 barely remained attached.

She counted silently.

Three.

Two.

One.

The agents forced the door open.

Inside...

Nothing.

An empty hospital room.

A broken wheelchair.

A cracked window.

No Catherine Monroe.

No kidnappers.

No evidence.

Only silence.

One young agent sighed.

"We're too late."

Amy slowly stepped inside.

Something felt wrong.

The room looked abandoned.

Too abandoned.

As if someone wanted it to appear untouched.

She walked toward the old bedside table.

There, hidden beneath a layer of dust, lay a tiny folded piece of paper.

She opened it.

Only four handwritten words appeared.

You came too fast.

The Real Target

At that exact moment, Harold Whitman's phone rang.

He answered immediately.

His face drained of color.

"Amy..."

"What happened?"

"Someone broke into Hartwell Technologies."

Amy frowned.

"Again?"

Harold shook his head.

"This time..."

"They didn't steal anything."

"What?"

"They planted something."

The Evidence

Forty minutes later, everyone gathered inside Hartwell Technologies' executive boardroom.

Federal agents searched every office.

A bomb squad cleared the building.

Finally, Special Agent Daniel Ross entered carrying a transparent evidence bag.

Inside was a black flash drive.

"We found this inside your private office."

Amy stared at it.

"I've never seen it."

Ross nodded.

"I believe you."

He connected the drive to an isolated forensic computer.

A single video appeared.

Its title read:

CONFESSION

Ross pressed play.

The screen flickered.

Amy's face appeared.

The room fell silent.

It looked exactly like her.

The woman on the screen said calmly,

"I arranged the wedding scandal."

"I started the fire at Hartwell Manor."

"I manipulated the evidence."

Harold slammed his hand against the table.

"This is fake!"

Ross paused the video.

"It is."

Amy looked surprised.

"You can tell?"

Ross nodded.

"The facial movements aren't natural."

"The voice has been artificially generated."

Alexander folded his arms.

"A deepfake."

Ross nodded again.

"Someone spent a fortune creating it."

Eleanor's Celebration

Across town, Eleanor Caldwell watched the news.

Every major network carried the same headline.

SHOCKING VIDEO EMERGES IN HARTWELL INVESTIGATION

She smiled for the first time in days.

Marcus Kane entered quietly.

"The media has the file."

"And the police?"

"They're examining it."

She nodded.

"Good."

Marcus hesitated.

"What if they discover it's fake?"

Eleanor calmly poured herself a glass of wine.

"They will."

Marcus looked confused.

"Then why release it?"

She smiled.

"Because truth takes time."

"Scandal doesn't."

Amy's Plan

Inside Hartwell Technologies, Amy looked around the conference room.

Everyone appeared exhausted.

Everyone...

Except her.

She slowly stood.

"They think we're reacting."

Alexander looked up.

"What do you mean?"

"They've predicted every move we've made."

She walked toward the whiteboard.

"So we stop being predictable."

Laura narrowed her eyes.

"You have something in mind."

Amy smiled.

"Yes."

"The coldest trap they'll never see coming."

A Public Defeat

The next morning, Amy shocked the business world.

Standing before dozens of reporters, she made an unexpected announcement.

"I've decided to end the legal conflict."

Gasps spread through the crowd.

She continued.

"After careful consideration..."

"I am prepared to negotiate with Caldwell Holdings."

Another reporter raised a hand.

"Are you dropping the investigation?"

Amy looked tired.

Deliberately tired.

"I simply want peace."

Financial analysts immediately declared the statement a surrender.

Television hosts called it a strategic retreat.

Caldwell Holdings' stock rose nearly seven percent before noon.

Exactly as Amy expected.

Behind Closed Doors

That afternoon, Eleanor received an official letter.

Hartwell Technologies requested confidential settlement negotiations.

She read every line carefully.

Ryan looked confused.

"She's giving up?"

Eleanor frowned.

"No."

"Then why meet us?"

She looked toward Marcus.

"Because she wants something."

Marcus asked quietly,

"Should we attend?"

Eleanor smiled.

"Of course."

"If someone offers you a gift..."

"You always unwrap it."

The Conference Suite

Two days later, representatives from both companies met inside a luxury conference suite at the Lexington Grand Hotel.

The irony wasn't lost on Amy.

It was the same hotel where Room 237 had destroyed her engagement.

This time, she wore a tailored navy business suit instead of a wedding gown.

Across the polished conference table sat Eleanor, Ryan, three corporate attorneys, and two financial advisers.

Alexander remained beside Amy.

Neither sibling acknowledged the other.

The atmosphere felt colder than any courtroom.

Amy slid a thick stack of documents across the table.

"My proposal."

Eleanor opened the first page.

Asset transfers.

Corporate restructuring.

Confidentiality agreements.

Everything appeared legitimate.

Almost too legitimate.

Greed

For nearly two hours, negotiations continued.

Ryan grew increasingly relaxed.

"So..."

He smiled smugly.

"You finally realized you can't beat us."

Amy calmly signed another document.

"Perhaps."

Ryan leaned back.

"I knew you'd come around."

Alexander watched silently.

Every word.

Every signature.

Every reaction.

Then he noticed something.

Amy wasn't negotiating.

She was leading them.

Exactly where she wanted.

The Signature

At last, Eleanor signed the final page.

"So."

She closed the folder.

"We have an agreement."

Amy smiled politely.

"I believe we do."

The room fell silent.

Then...

Amy reached into her briefcase.

She removed a small remote control.

Click.

The conference room television switched on.

Instead of financial reports...

Security footage appeared.

Multiple camera angles.

Clear audio.

Every word spoken during the previous two hours had been recorded.

Ryan frowned.

"What is this?"

Amy calmly answered,

"The conference room belongs to Hartwell Technologies."

She looked directly at Eleanor.

"And every participant signed the consent clause on page three."

The attorneys hurriedly flipped through the documents.

Their faces turned pale.

Buried inside the legal language was a recording authorization.

Perfectly legal.

Perfectly binding.

The Confession

Amy pressed another button.

The speakers replayed Eleanor's own voice.

"The fire solved one problem."

Another clip.

"Catherine Monroe won't testify."

Another.

"Some people are more useful dead than alive."

Ryan stared at his mother.

"You said that?"

Eleanor's expression remained calm.

But for the first time...

She wasn't smiling.

The conference room doors suddenly opened.

FBI agents entered.

Special Agent Daniel Ross stepped inside carrying a federal warrant.

He looked directly at Eleanor.

"Thank you."

She frowned.

"For what?"

Ross held up the signed agreement.

"For voluntarily recording your own admissions."

Silence.

Absolute silence.

One More Move

As agents began collecting evidence, Eleanor slowly laughed.

Everyone looked at her.

"You think you've won?"

She looked directly at Amy.

"You've trapped one queen."

She smiled.

"But you've forgotten something."

Amy remained perfectly calm.

"What?"

Eleanor leaned forward.

"The king has never entered the game."

Before anyone could respond, every phone in the room buzzed simultaneously.

Breaking news flashed across every screen.

Victor Caldwell Missing.

Private jet disappears from radar thirty minutes after takeoff.

Alexander's face lost all color.

"My father..."

Eleanor quietly closed her eyes.

Then whispered almost to herself,

"Now..."

May you like

"...the real game begins."
