Chapter 12 – The Attempted Murder

Chapter 12 – The Attempted Murder

The news struck the investigation like a lightning bolt.

Someone inside the FBI had been leaking information.

Not once.

Not twice.

Repeatedly.

Every safe house had been compromised.

Every witness had been exposed.

Every carefully planned operation had somehow reached Eleanor Caldwell before federal agents arrived.

Inside the abandoned military hangar where Victor Caldwell's private jet had been found, no one spoke for several seconds.

Special Agent Daniel Ross finally broke the silence.

"Nobody leaves."

Every agent stopped moving.

"Phones."

One by one, federal agents placed their phones on a folding table.

Ross looked at Detective Laura Bennett.

"Local police too."

Laura nodded without argument.

If there was a traitor...

Everyone was a suspect.

The MicroSD Card

The forensic team carefully removed the hidden microSD card from Victor Caldwell's wristwatch.

Ross refused to connect it to any government computer.

Instead, Harold Whitman produced a brand-new laptop purchased only an hour earlier.

"No network."

"No wireless."

"No internet."

Amy inserted the card.

Only one folder appeared.

Insurance Policy

Inside were dozens of encrypted files.

And one video.

Victor appeared on the screen, wearing the same navy suit he had worn during his final board meeting.

"If you're seeing this..."

"...then I didn't make it home."

His expression remained steady.

"I've spent years pretending to obey Eleanor."

"Long enough for her to believe I'd stopped asking questions."

He looked directly into the camera.

"I never stopped."

A Name Nobody Expected

Victor opened a digital folder labeled Internal Security.

A photograph appeared.

Amy frowned.

She had never seen the man before.

Alexander hadn't.

Ryan hadn't.

Only Agent Ross reacted.

"No..."

Laura looked at him.

"You know him?"

Ross answered quietly.

"Deputy Director William Grayson."

The room went silent.

One of the highest-ranking officials in the regional FBI command.

The man responsible for approving witness protection assignments.

Ryan whispered,

"You're saying..."

Ross nodded.

"He knew where every witness was moved."

Amy slowly understood.

Thomas Ellison.

Catherine Monroe.

Every failed operation.

Someone hadn't been guessing.

Someone had been reading the case files.

The Hospital

Emily Dawson—Richard Hartwell's longtime executive assistant—had suffered a minor stroke after years of stress.

She had recently begun cooperating with investigators.

Now she lay in a secure hospital room under federal protection.

Or so everyone believed.

Laura glanced at her watch.

"I need to check on Emily."

Ross immediately stood.

"No."

Laura frowned.

"What?"

"No one goes anywhere alone."

Ross looked around the room.

"Starting now, every witness is in immediate danger."

Eleanor's Decision

Across the city, Eleanor Caldwell stood inside the library of Caldwell Estate.

Marcus Kane entered.

"The leak has been exposed."

"I know."

Marcus hesitated.

"What about Grayson?"

Eleanor calmly burned a sheet of paper in the fireplace.

"He served his purpose."

"And Emily Dawson?"

Eleanor watched the paper turn to ash.

"She talks tomorrow."

Marcus nodded.

"I understand."

Eleanor looked directly at him.

"No mistakes."

Midnight Visitor

Mercy General Hospital appeared quiet after midnight.

Rain tapped against the windows.

Two federal agents stood outside Emily Dawson's room.

A nurse approached pushing a medication cart.

One guard checked her identification.

Everything appeared legitimate.

Hospital badge.

Uniform.

Medication chart.

He stepped aside.

The nurse entered.

Inside the room, Emily smiled weakly.

"You're new."

The nurse nodded.

"Night shift."

She prepared a syringe.

Emily frowned.

"I don't usually receive medication at this hour."

The nurse smiled.

"Doctor's orders."

The Instinct

Twenty minutes away, Amy suddenly looked up from Victor's files.

Something felt wrong.

She couldn't explain it.

She simply knew.

She looked toward Laura.

"Emily."

Laura frowned.

"What about her?"

"We need to get to the hospital."

Ross looked surprised.

"Why?"

Amy stood.

"Because if I were Eleanor..."

"...I'd eliminate the witness before sunrise."

Ross didn't hesitate.

"Move!"

The Injection

Inside Room 814, the fake nurse slowly approached Emily's bed.

Emily noticed something strange.

The syringe contained a clear liquid.

Her regular medication was pale yellow.

"What medicine is that?"

The nurse didn't answer.

She reached for Emily's arm.

Emily instinctively pulled away.

At that exact moment...

The hospital door burst open.

"Federal agents!"

Marcus Kane reacted instantly.

He drove the syringe toward Emily's neck.

Before he could inject it—

A chair slammed into his arm.

Laura Bennett.

The syringe flew across the room.

Marcus spun, throwing Laura against the wall.

Ross drew his weapon.

"Freeze!"

Marcus smashed a medical monitor into the lights.

The room plunged into darkness.

The Chase

Emergency lighting flickered on.

Marcus sprinted into the hallway.

Ross and two agents followed.

Hospital alarms echoed throughout the building.

Patients screamed.

Doctors rushed from their stations.

Marcus pushed a supply cart into pursuing agents before diving through a stairwell door.

Alexander arrived from the elevator just in time to see him disappear downstairs.

"He's heading for the parking garage!"

The chase continued through concrete corridors.

Marcus reached a black SUV waiting with its engine running.

He opened the driver's door—

A black sedan slammed into the SUV.

The impact echoed through the garage.

Amy climbed out of the damaged sedan.

Marcus stared in disbelief.

"You?"

Amy met his eyes.

"I've had enough of people running away."

Marcus drew a pistol.

Alexander tackled him from the side.

The gun slid beneath another vehicle.

Marcus punched Alexander hard enough to split his lip.

The two men crashed against the concrete floor.

A Choice

Marcus recovered first.

He reached the fallen pistol.

Alexander was too far away.

Amy was closer.

She looked at the weapon.

Then at Marcus.

Then at Alexander.

Marcus smiled coldly.

"You won't shoot."

Amy calmly kicked the pistol across the garage.

Straight toward Laura.

Laura secured it instantly.

Marcus lunged toward Amy instead.

Before he reached her—

Ryan Caldwell stepped from behind a concrete pillar.

Holding another gun.

Everyone froze.

Marcus laughed.

"Finally."

He looked at Ryan.

"Your mother sent you?"

Ryan slowly raised the weapon.

Amy tensed.

Alexander held his breath.

Marcus smiled confidently.

Then...

Ryan turned the gun.

And pointed it directly at Marcus.

"My mother has destroyed enough lives."

Marcus's smile vanished.

"You don't mean that."

Ryan answered quietly.

"I finally do."

The Confession

Surrounded by agents, Marcus realized there was no escape.

Ross handcuffed him.

As they led him toward an armored vehicle, Marcus laughed bitterly.

"You think arresting me changes anything?"

Amy looked at him.

"It changes everything."

Marcus shook his head.

"No."

"You still don't know who ordered Richard Hartwell's death."

Amy's expression hardened.

"You mean my father's murder."

Marcus smiled.

"I didn't say murder."

He leaned closer.

"But you did."

Ross immediately ordered him into the vehicle.

Amy couldn't stop thinking about those words.

Marcus had corrected nothing.

Instead...

He had confirmed the possibility.

The Poison

Back inside the hospital, doctors examined the discarded syringe.

One toxicologist looked up grimly.

"This wasn't a sedative."

Laura frowned.

"What was it?"

"A fast-acting neurotoxin."

Emily stared in horror.

"If she'd injected me..."

The doctor answered quietly.

"You likely would have died within minutes."

Ross looked through the observation window at Marcus sitting handcuffed inside the transport vehicle.

For the first time, they had captured the man who had burned Hartwell Manor.

The man who had kidnapped witnesses.

The man who had just attempted another murder.

But Amy knew Marcus Kane was never the mastermind.

He was only the weapon.

Someone else had been pulling the trigger all along.

One Final Message

As dawn broke, technicians searched Marcus's confiscated phone.

Most files had been remotely erased.

Except one.

An unsent draft message.

Addressed to Eleanor Caldwell.

It contained only a single sentence.

The daughter is becoming more dangerous than the father ever was.

Amy read the words silently.

Harold looked at her.

"What are you thinkng?"

She closed the phone and looked toward the sunrise beyond the hospital windows.

"For the first time..."

"...they're afraid of me."

Behind reinforced glass, Marcus Kane watched her from the interrogation room.

He smiled to himself.

Because Eleanor Caldwell had always prepared for failure.

And somewhere, hidden beyond everything the investigators had uncovered...

There was still one final secret.

One capable of destroying every person standing in that hospital.

Including Amy Hartwell.
