Chapter 13 â Judgment Begins

Chapter 13 â Judgment Begins
Marcus Kane had finally been captured.
For the first time since Room 237, the people hunting Amy Hartwell had lost one of their most dangerous weapons.
But Amy knew better than to celebrate.
Marcus had never made a single decision on his own.
He carried out orders.
The woman giving those orders was still free.
And now she knew the walls were closing in.
The Interrogation
The federal detention center was silent except for the hum of fluorescent lights.
Marcus sat in an interrogation room, his wrists cuffed to the steel table.
Across from him sat Special Agent Daniel Ross.
Detective Laura Bennett stood against the wall.
A digital recorder blinked red.
Ross slid a folder onto the table.
"You've been charged with attempted murder, arson, kidnapping, conspiracy, and obstruction of justice."
Marcus smiled.
"I've heard worse."
Ross remained calm.
"You can spend the rest of your life protecting Eleanor Caldwell."
He paused.
"Or tell us why Richard Hartwell died."
For the first time, Marcus's smile faded.
Only slightly.
"You keep asking the wrong question."
Ross leaned forward.
"Then give me the right one."
Marcus's eyes locked onto his.
"You should be asking..."
"...who paid for it."
Eleanor Makes Her Move
Across town, Eleanor Caldwell stood in the library of Caldwell Estate.
Most of the staff had already left.
The mansion felt unusually empty.
Ryan had moved into a downtown apartment.
Alexander had publicly resigned.
Victor was still missing.
For the first time in decades...
She was alone.
Her attorney, Charles Monroe, entered carrying several folders.
"The emergency injunction failed."
"I expected that."
"The court denied our request to suppress the recordings."
Eleanor nodded once.
"And Grayson?"
"He resigned before the FBI could suspend him."
She smiled faintly.
"A smart man."
Charles hesitated.
"Marcus has been arrested."
Silence.
"Do you believe he'll talk?"
Eleanor walked to the fireplace.
"No."
"But eventually..."
"...he'll become inconvenient."
A Grand Jury Convenes
Three days later, a federal grand jury began reviewing evidence against Eleanor Caldwell and several executives connected to Caldwell Holdings.
The proceedings were sealed.
Only a handful of prosecutors, investigators, and witnesses were allowed inside.
Amy entered through a private entrance.
Reporters shouted questions from behind security barriers.
"Miss Hartwell!"
"Do you believe justice will finally be served?"
She stopped only once.
"I believe the truth deserves its day."
Then she disappeared inside.
An Unexpected Witness
Assistant U.S. Attorney Rebecca Lawson reviewed the witness list.
Then frowned.
"Who's Daniel Brooks?"
Ross smiled slightly.
"Someone Eleanor never knew existed."
A middle-aged man entered the room.
Simple suit.
Thin glasses.
Quiet confidence.
Amy had never seen him before.
Ross made the introduction.
"Daniel Brooks."
"Forensic accountant."
Amy looked confused.
"I thought Thomas Ellison handled my father's financial investigations."
Ross nodded.
"He did."
"But whenever Thomas found something too dangerous..."
"...he secretly copied it."
"And sent it to Daniel."
Daniel placed three thick binders on the table.
"I've spent twelve years waiting for this day."
Twelve Years of Evidence
The binders contained far more than financial records.
Secret contracts.
Audio transcripts.
Foreign bank transfers.
Corporate emails recovered from backup servers.
One chart traced illegal payments across fourteen countries.
Another connected shell corporations directly to Caldwell Holdings.
Amy slowly turned each page.
"How did you hide all this?"
Daniel smiled.
"I never stored anything digitally."
He tapped the paper files.
"Your father taught me that."
Harold quietly nodded.
"Richard always said..."
"'Ink survives longer than hard drives.'"
The Betrayal
Meanwhile, inside the federal detention center, Marcus Kane received a visitor.
His attorney.
Or so he believed.
The man entered wearing a dark suit and carrying a briefcase.
He handed Marcus a legal document.
"Sign here."
Marcus frowned.
"This isn't my lawyer."
The visitor smiled politely.
"No."
"I'm here because Mrs. Caldwell sends her gratitude."
Marcus's expression hardened.
Before he could react...
The man quietly whispered,
"You know too much."
Marcus lunged from his chair.
Too late.
The visitor slipped a tiny capsule beneath his tongue and bit down.
Within seconds, foam appeared around his mouth.
He collapsed onto the interrogation room floor.
Alarms echoed through the detention center.
Guards rushed inside.
Doctors fought desperately to save him.
But the visitor had already died.
He had carried poison.
And with his final breath...
He had attempted to silence Marcus forever.
A Failure
Emergency physicians managed to stabilize Marcus.
Barely.
He survived.
But he remained unconscious.
Ross stood outside the intensive care unit.
"He almost died."
Laura folded her arms.
"Eleanor just tried to kill her own operative."
Ross nodded.
"She isn't protecting Marcus."
"She's protecting herself."
Ryan Chooses a Side
That evening, Ryan Caldwell arrived at Hartwell Technologies unannounced.
Security hesitated.
Amy instructed them to let him in.
Ryan entered her office slowly.
He looked exhausted.
"I don't expect forgiveness."
Amy remained silent.
"I came because..."
He swallowed.
"I found something in Dad's safe room."
He placed a sealed envelope on her desk.
Across the front, Victor had written:
For Amy HartwellâOnly if Eleanor refuses to surrender.
Amy carefully opened it.
Inside was a list.
Names.
Judges.
Lobbyists.
Corporate executives.
Politicians.
Beside each name...
Dates.
Payments.
Amounts.
Harold stared at the pages.
"My God..."
Ryan looked at Amy.
"My mother didn't build an empire."
He lowered his eyes.
"She bought one."
The Indictments
The following morning, federal prosecutors walked into court carrying stacks of evidence.
The grand jury had finished its review.
The clerk stood.
"In the matter of the United States versus Eleanor Caldwell..."
Everyone inside the courtroom rose.
The judge accepted the sealed indictment.
Moments later, the charges became public.
Conspiracy.
Wire fraud.
Obstruction of justice.
Witness tampering.
Attempted murder.
Racketeering.
Money laundering.
The list continued for nearly five minutes.
Television networks interrupted regular programming.
The stock market reacted instantly.
Caldwell Holdings' shares plunged.
Outside the courthouse, reporters rushed toward the entrance.
One question echoed louder than all the others.
"Where is Eleanor Caldwell?"
The Empty Mansion
Federal agents arrived at Caldwell Estate with arrest warrants.
The gates stood open.
The front door was unlocked.
Every room had been cleaned.
Every computer removed.
Every file cabinet emptied.
The mansion was deserted.
Ross searched Eleanor's private office.
Nothing.
Laura entered the library.
"Sir."
Ross joined her.
The fireplace was burning.
Inside the flames lay the remains of shredded documents.
Laura reached into the ashes with a fireproof tool.
Most pages were destroyed.
Except one.
A corner had escaped the fire.
Only a single sentence remained legible.
Phase Three Begins
Ross stared at the words.
"There was another plan."
Before anyone could respond, an officer ran into the room.
"Sir!"
"What is it?"
"We've received reports of an explosion."
"Where?"
The officer swallowed.
"Hartwell Technologies."
Amy's face turned pale.
Her headquarters.
Without another word, she sprinted toward the waiting vehicles.
As sirens filled the air, she realized Eleanor Caldwell had abandoned the mansion willingly.
Because she had already launched her final attack.
The battle for justice had begun.
Now...
May you like
It was becoming a fight for survival.
