Chapter 4 – The Brother Who Refused to Defend Him

Chapter 4 – The Brother Who Refused to Defend Him

The silence inside the Hartwell Manor library lasted only a few seconds.

But for Amy, it felt much longer.

Her father's confidential archives had been stolen.

Not cash.

Not jewelry.

Not company servers.

Only documents.

That meant one thing.

Someone already knew Richard Hartwell had left behind more than a fortune.

They were searching for evidence.

Or trying to erase it.

A Son Summoned Home

Across town, Alexander Caldwell's phone continued vibrating.

Mother Calling.

Again.

And again.

Twenty-three missed calls.

Seven messages.

The final one was shorter than the others.

If you don't come home, don't bother coming back at all.

Alexander stared at the screen before slipping the phone into his pocket.

Harold looked at him.

"You should go."

Amy frowned.

"Why?"

Harold answered quietly.

"Because if Eleanor Caldwell is panicking..."

"...she'll make mistakes."

Alexander nodded.

"And I've spent my whole life watching her hide them."

He looked at Amy.

"I'll find out what she's protecting."

Amy crossed her arms.

"How do I know you won't warn your family instead?"

Alexander met her eyes without hesitation.

"You don't."

"I've done nothing to earn your trust."

"But by tomorrow..."

"You'll know where I stand."

Without waiting for an answer, he turned and walked out of the library.

Amy watched him leave.

She wanted to believe him.

She also knew trust had nearly destroyed her once already.

Caldwell Estate

The Caldwell mansion stood less than fifteen miles away, but it felt like another world.

The moment Alexander stepped inside, he could hear shouting.

His mother wasn't waiting in the drawing room.

She was in the executive office.

Ryan stood near the fireplace, his tie hanging loose.

His face was splashed across every television screen in the room.

News anchors replayed the wedding disaster.

"...the scandal has erased nearly eight billion dollars in market value..."

"...investors are demanding emergency leadership changes..."

"...Caldwell Holdings has issued no official statement..."

Ryan slammed the remote onto the floor.

"They won't stop showing it!"

"They won't stop talking about it!"

Eleanor didn't even look at him.

"Because you gave them something worth talking about."

Ryan stared.

"You're blaming me?"

She slowly turned.

"I'm blaming your stupidity."

The Mother Behind the Curtain

Alexander entered quietly.

Eleanor's cold blue eyes landed on him immediately.

"So..."

"You finally decided to come home."

Alexander closed the door.

"You wanted to see me."

"I wanted an explanation."

She walked closer.

"Why did Amy send those videos to you?"

Ryan's head snapped toward his brother.

"You knew?"

Alexander answered calmly.

"I found out ten minutes before the ceremony."

Ryan stepped forward.

"And you said nothing?"

Alexander looked at him.

"What exactly should I have said?"

Ryan clenched his fists.

"You should have stopped her!"

Alexander's voice remained level.

"I tried."

Ryan blinked.

"I tried to stop you."

"You just ignored every warning I gave you over the last three years."

Brothers

Ryan laughed bitterly.

"Oh, here we go."

"The perfect older brother."

"The responsible son."

"The future chairman."

Alexander didn't react.

Ryan continued.

"You've always looked down on me."

"No."

Alexander answered quietly.

"I believed you could become better."

Ryan smirked.

"And now?"

Alexander's eyes hardened.

"Now I know I was wrong."

The room fell silent.

Eleanor's Real Concern

Eleanor interrupted before the argument could continue.

"This family has more important problems."

She picked up a folder from her desk.

"The board has called an emergency meeting."

Ryan frowned.

"They're replacing me?"

She shook her head.

"They're questioning all of us."

Alexander noticed something unusual.

His mother wasn't worried about Ryan's affair anymore.

She was worried about something else.

Something much bigger.

"What are you hiding?"

Eleanor's expression didn't change.

"I'm protecting this family."

Alexander stepped closer.

"No."

"You're protecting yourself."

The Emergency Board Meeting

Three hours later, the executive board of Caldwell Holdings gathered on the top floor of corporate headquarters.

Twenty directors filled the conference room.

The atmosphere was tense.

No one mentioned the affair.

Instead, the chairman spoke first.

"Our stock has lost billions in a single trading session."

He looked directly at Ryan.

"Your personal misconduct created this crisis."

Ryan shifted uncomfortably.

Before he could answer, another board member spoke.

"We've discovered something else."

A thick report was placed on the table.

Alexander glanced at the cover.

Internal Financial Audit

His instincts immediately sharpened.

Missing Millions

The chief financial officer stood.

"During today's emergency review..."

"...our auditors discovered unauthorized transfers."

The room became quiet.

"Transferred where?"

"Offshore companies."

"Total amount?"

The CFO swallowed.

"Approximately four hundred and eighty million dollars over six years."

Gasps echoed around the table.

Ryan looked genuinely shocked.

"That's impossible."

Alexander wasn't looking at the numbers.

He was watching his mother.

She remained perfectly calm.

Too calm.

A Dangerous Question

One director turned toward Eleanor.

"As chairwoman..."

"...did you authorize these transactions?"

She smiled politely.

"Of course not."

Another director asked,

"Then who did?"

Nobody answered.

The CFO slowly opened another page.

"We traced the approval signatures."

Alexander felt his pulse quicken.

The signatures belonged to...

Ryan Caldwell.

Ryan jumped to his feet.

"I never signed those!"

The CFO looked uncomfortable.

"The digital certificates are yours."

Ryan looked around desperately.

"This is a setup!"

Alexander believed him.

Not because Ryan was innocent.

Because Ryan wasn't intelligent enough to organize something this sophisticated.

Someone had used him.

Brother Against Brother

The directors demanded immediate answers.

One finally looked at Alexander.

"Vice Chairman Caldwell..."

"Do you support your brother?"

Every eye in the room turned toward him.

Ryan whispered,

"Alex..."

Eleanor silently watched.

She expected loyalty.

Family always came first.

Alexander slowly stood.

He looked at Ryan.

Then at the board.

Finally, he spoke.

"I support the truth."

The room became still.

"If Ryan committed these crimes..."

"...he should answer for them."

Ryan stared in disbelief.

"You can't be serious."

Alexander continued.

"If he didn't commit them..."

"...then the person who did should answer instead."

He looked directly at Eleanor.

For the first time...

She looked away.

Amy's Investigation Begins

At the same moment, Amy sat in her father's old office inside Hartwell Manor.

Harold had spread dozens of files across the desk.

Richard Hartwell had left detailed notes.

Business partners.

Lawsuits.

Private meetings.

Handwritten observations.

One notebook stood out.

Its leather cover was worn from years of use.

Inside, every page contained short entries.

Not business strategies.

Names.

Dates.

Warnings.

Amy stopped on one page.

It contained only a single sentence.

Never trust Eleanor Caldwell with anything she cannot already steal.

Amy slowly closed the notebook.

Her father hadn't simply disliked Eleanor.

He had feared her.

The Call

Harold's secure phone rang.

He answered immediately.

After only a few words, he handed it to Amy.

"It's for you."

Amy frowned.

"Who is it?"

"They wouldn't say."

She took the phone.

"This is Amy Hartwell."

A distorted voice answered.

"You inherited more than your father's company."

Amy stiffened.

"Who is this?"

"You inherited his enemies."

The line crackled.

"Check the fireplace."

"What?"

"In Richard Hartwell's private study."

"You have five minutes."

The call ended.

Behind the Fireplace

Amy and Harold rushed into Richard's private study.

The old stone fireplace had not been used in years.

At first glance, nothing seemed unusual.

Then Amy remembered something.

As a child, her father never allowed anyone else to clean the mantel.

She examined the carved wooden frame carefully.

Hidden beneath the edge was a tiny brass switch.

She pressed it.

A soft click echoed through the room.

The fireplace slowly shifted backward.

Behind it...

A concealed steel safe emerged from the wall.

Harold stared in amazement.

"I've worked for your father for thirty-two years."

"I never knew this existed."

Amy entered the combination using her father's birthday.

The safe opened.

Inside were only three items.

A flash drive.

A leather journal.

And a sealed envelope.

Across the envelope, in Richard Hartwell's handwriting, were the words:

If they have already stolen the archives...

They are finally desperate.

Amy looked up.

For the first time, she understood the scale of what she was facing.

Ryan Caldwell had betrayed her.

But Ryan was never the true enemy.

Someone far more intelligent...

Far more patient...

Had been moving pieces across the board for years.

May you like

And Amy had just opened the first file that could bring that person down.
