Chapter 9 â The Missing Witness

Chapter 9 â The Missing Witness
The resignation became national news before Alexander Caldwell had driven three miles from company headquarters.
Every business network carried the same breaking headline.
CALDWELL VICE CHAIRMAN RESIGNS AMID EXPANDING FEDERAL INVESTIGATION
Speculation spread instantly.
Some believed Alexander was abandoning a sinking ship.
Others claimed he had secretly made a deal with prosecutors.
No one knew the truth.
Not yet.
An Unlikely Alliance
Amy waited in the executive conference room at Hartwell Technologies.
The leather journal from Safety Deposit Box 117 lay open before her.
Beside it were copies of the hidden ledgers Thomas Ellison had protected for decades.
Harold Whitman stood by the windows while Detective Laura Bennett organized photographs across the conference table.
When Alexander entered, the room fell silent.
He quietly placed his Caldwell security badge on the table.
"I've resigned."
Amy looked at him carefully.
"That couldn't have been easy."
Alexander gave a tired smile.
"It was easier than pretending nothing was wrong."
Harold nodded toward the empty chair.
"Then sit."
"We have work to do."
The Federal Case
Laura switched on the projector.
The first slide displayed a growing web of names.
Shell companies.
Offshore accounts.
Government officials.
Corporate executives.
Every line eventually pointed toward one person.
Eleanor Caldwell.
"The FBI has officially opened a financial conspiracy investigation," Laura said.
"They've requested everything Thomas Ellison gave us."
Amy folded her arms.
"Is it enough?"
Laura hesitated.
"Enough to investigate."
"But not enough to convict."
"What are we missing?"
"A witness."
The room grew quiet.
"The documents prove money moved."
"They don't prove who ordered it."
Alexander leaned forward.
"There has to be someone."
Laura nodded.
"There is."
She clicked to the next slide.
A photograph appeared.
A middle-aged woman wearing glasses.
Professional.
Reserved.
Her name appeared beneath the image.
Catherine Monroe
Former Executive Assistant to Eleanor Caldwell.
Amy frowned.
"Where is she?"
Laura answered softly.
"That's the problem."
"We don't know."
The Woman Who Knew Everything
According to Laura, Catherine Monroe had worked beside Eleanor for nearly eighteen years.
She scheduled private meetings.
Handled confidential correspondence.
Prepared contracts before anyone else saw them.
"If Eleanor had secrets," Laura said, "Catherine probably typed half of them."
"Why did she leave?"
Laura handed Amy a personnel file.
"Officially, she retired."
Alexander scanned the document.
"This signature isn't hers."
Laura nodded.
"We compared it to older employment records."
"It was forged."
Amy looked up.
"So she didn't retire."
Laura's expression hardened.
"She disappeared."
Pressure
Across town, Eleanor Caldwell stood inside her private office.
Marcus Kane entered without knocking.
"The FBI is looking for Catherine Monroe."
Eleanor didn't seem surprised.
"I expected that."
Marcus waited.
"What are your orders?"
She walked toward the fireplace.
"Find her first."
"And if she talks?"
Eleanor turned slowly.
"She won't."
Marcus understood immediately.
No further explanation was necessary.
A Message from the Past
Back at Hartwell Technologies, Harold examined the contents of Richard Hartwell's leather journal.
Several pages contained seemingly random initials.
On the final page, one line had been circled.
C.M. â Keep her safe.
Harold looked up sharply.
"Catherine Monroe."
Amy leaned closer.
"My father knew her?"
Harold nodded.
"I think he was protecting her."
Alexander frowned.
"From my mother."
Harold didn't answer.
He simply turned the page.
Tucked inside the journal was an old business card.
On the back, Richard had handwritten an address.
Blue Ridge Inn
Ashville, North Carolina.
The Empty Motel
Three hours later, Amy, Alexander, Laura, and two FBI agents arrived at the small roadside motel.
The owner recognized Catherine immediately.
"She stayed here for nearly six months."
Laura's heartbeat quickened.
"Where is she now?"
The elderly owner looked confused.
"I thought you already picked her up."
Silence.
"What do you mean?"
"Two government vehicles came yesterday."
"They showed badges."
"They said they were taking her somewhere safe."
Laura's face went pale.
"We didn't send anyone."
Too Late
The motel room remained exactly as Catherine had left it.
A suitcase sat beside the bed.
Half-finished tea rested on the nightstand.
Reading glasses lay atop an open novel.
She hadn't packed.
She hadn't checked out.
She had vanished in the middle of an ordinary afternoon.
An FBI forensic team immediately searched the room.
Within minutes, one technician called out.
"Agent!"
Laura hurried over.
"What is it?"
The technician pointed toward the carpet.
Tiny drops of blood.
Almost invisible.
Someone had cleaned them.
But not well enough.
The Recording
Inside a hollow space beneath the dresser, investigators discovered a small digital voice recorder.
Laura carefully pressed play.
Static crackled.
Then Catherine's voice emerged.
"If anyone finds this..."
"I don't have much time."
She sounded frightened.
"Eleanor knows I'm leaving."
A loud knock echoed through the recording.
Catherine whispered urgently.
"Richard Hartwell was right."
"The marriage wasn't about love."
"It was approved during a private meeting."
Another knock.
Louder.
"They're here."
The recording ended abruptly.
Amy stared at the device.
She had finally found proof.
Not complete proof.
But enough to confirm her father's warnings.
The Leak
Back at FBI headquarters, Special Agent Daniel Ross called an emergency meeting.
"No one outside this room knew about Blue Ridge Inn."
He looked around the table.
"So how did fake federal agents arrive first?"
No one answered.
Ross lowered his voice.
"We have a leak."
The realization hit everyone at once.
Someone inside law enforcement was feeding information directly to Eleanor Caldwell.
Framed
That evening, every major news outlet released another shocking story.
Exclusive: Anonymous Sources Question Hartwell Fire Evidence
Television commentators claimed Amy had fabricated the arson allegations to distract from her failed wedding.
Anonymous "investigators" suggested Hartwell Manor's fire insurance policy had recently increased.
Within an hour, another story appeared.
Former Employee Claims Amy Hartwell Pressured Witnesses
Harold threw the newspaper onto the conference table.
"This is impossible."
Laura clenched her jaw.
"The leak isn't just inside law enforcement."
"It's reaching the media."
Alexander looked at Amy.
"They're trying to destroy your credibility before Catherine is found."
Amy calmly folded the newspaper.
"They're afraid."
Harold frowned.
"How can you tell?"
She smiled faintly.
"Because innocent people don't spend millions inventing lies."
The Call
Near midnight, Amy's secure phone rang again.
Unknown number.
She answered cautiously.
"Hello?"
A weak female voice whispered,
"...Amy?"
Amy froze.
"Catherine?"
Static crackled across the line.
"They found me."
"Where are you?"
"I don't know."
"They keep moving me."
Amy grabbed a pen.
"Tell me anything."
A pause.
Then Catherine whispered three words.
"Room..."
"...nineteen..."
A loud crash interrupted the call.
Voices shouted in the background.
The phone fell.
Then the line went dead.
Laura immediately traced the signal.
Thirty seconds later, she looked up.
"I've got the location."
"Where?"
Laura's expression tightened.
"The old Riverside Medical Center."
Alexander reached for his car keys.
Amy stood beside him.
"We're going."
Laura shook her head.
"No."
"It's too dangerous."
Amy met her eyes.
"They've already made it dangerous."
Outside, sirens echoed through the night as federal agents raced toward the abandoned hospital.
None of them knew whether Catherine Monroe was still alive.
May you like
Or whether they were driving straight into the trap Eleanor Caldwell had been preparing all along.
