Chapter 5 â Fire at Hartwell Manor

Chapter 5 â Fire at Hartwell Manor
The hidden safe stood open.
Its steel door reflected the warm glow of the study lamps as Amy carefully lifted the three items onto her father's mahogany desk.
A leather journal.
A black flash drive with no label.
And the sealed envelope.
Richard Hartwell's handwriting seemed almost alive.
If they have already stolen the archives...
They are finally desperate.
Amy ran her fingers across the envelope without opening it.
Harold Whitman stood silently beside her.
For thirty-two years, he had watched Richard Hartwell prepare for every possible business battle.
But this...
This was different.
Richard hadn't prepared for a hostile takeover.
He had prepared for a war.
Richard's Last Warning
Amy carefully broke the wax seal.
Inside was a single handwritten letter.
No legal language.
No financial terms.
Just her father's familiar handwriting.
My dearest Amy,
If you are reading this, someone has finally made their move.
They no longer care about appearances.
That means they are afraid.
Amy swallowed.
Richard continued.
The documents stolen from Hartwell Technologies are incomplete.
The evidence they truly need has never been stored there.
I hid it somewhere no one would ever think to search.
Not in a bank.
Not in my office.
Not even inside this house.
Amy frowned.
"Then where?"
Harold smiled faintly.
"He always enjoyed riddles."
Amy kept reading.
Trust very few people.
Judge everyone by their actions, not their promises.
And remember...
Fire destroys paper.
But it also reveals what people are willing to burn.
Amy looked up.
The final sentence sent a chill through the room.
"Fire..."
Across Town
Inside Caldwell Holdings, the emergency board meeting had become chaos.
Directors argued over financial losses.
Lawyers demanded damage control.
Investors threatened lawsuits.
Ryan Caldwell sat silently at the end of the conference table.
His phone buzzed every few seconds.
The internet had turned him into a national joke.
Memes.
News articles.
Commentary videos.
Millions had already watched the footage from Room 237.
He had never felt so powerless.
Then Eleanor quietly entered.
"Come with me."
Ryan followed her into a private office.
She closed the door.
"What happens now?"
Ryan asked.
Eleanor looked at him coldly.
"You stop feeling sorry for yourself."
"I've lost everything."
She stepped closer.
"No."
"You've become a liability."
Ryan stared at her.
"What does that mean?"
For several seconds she said nothing.
Then she picked up her phone.
"Phase Two."
Ryan frowned.
"What phase two?"
Eleanor ended the call without answering.
An Unexpected Visitor
Back at Hartwell Manor, evening settled over the estate.
Amy had changed out of her wedding dress into a navy sweater and jeans.
For the first time all day, she felt like herself again.
The doorbell rang.
The elderly butler opened the front door.
Alexander Caldwell stood outside.
He carried no briefcase.
No security.
Just a thin folder.
"I need to speak with Amy."
Harold glanced toward the study.
"I'll ask."
Moments later, Alexander entered.
Amy remained standing.
"I didn't expect to see you again today."
"I found something."
He handed her the folder.
"It belongs to your father."
Amy opened it.
Inside were copies of internal Caldwell Holdings emails.
Most were ordinary.
Until she reached the last page.
A message from nearly four years earlier.
Subject: Hartwell Marriage Strategy
Her heartbeat quickened.
Ryan's name appeared.
Vanessa's appeared.
Even hers.
Every important moment of her relationship had been discussed like a business transaction.
Amy slowly looked up.
"They planned my engagement."
Alexander nodded.
"I'm afraid they planned much more than that."
Smoke
Before Amy could ask another question, the lights flickered.
Once.
Twice.
Then the entire house went dark.
The emergency generator activated seconds later.
The butler hurried into the study.
"Miss Hartwell..."
"I smell smoke."
Harold immediately stood.
"Where?"
"The east hallway."
Amy's stomach tightened.
Everyone rushed into the corridor.
At first there was only a faint smell.
Then...
A thin gray ribbon of smoke curled beneath the library door.
Harold pushed it open.
Flames exploded across one wall.
"Fire!"
The antique curtains had already caught.
The bookshelves crackled.
Within seconds, the fire raced toward the ceiling.
The Escape
The alarm screamed through the mansion.
Staff ran in every direction.
The butler shouted for everyone to evacuate.
Alexander grabbed a fire extinguisher from the hallway.
"It won't be enough."
Harold coughed.
"The old wood will spread it too quickly."
Amy suddenly froze.
"My father's journal!"
She turned toward the study.
Alexander caught her wrist.
"No!"
"It's still inside!"
"You'll die."
She looked toward the growing flames.
"My father protected those documents for years."
Alexander answered firmly.
"And he didn't do it so you could die trying to save them."
Another explosion echoed from upstairs.
Glass shattered.
Smoke poured through the hallway.
Alexander practically dragged Amy toward the front entrance.
Moments later, everyone stumbled onto the front lawn.
Behind them, Hartwell Manor burned.
Not an Accident
Firefighters arrived within minutes.
Dozens of trucks surrounded the estate.
Water cannons blasted through shattered windows.
Neighbors gathered outside the gates.
Television helicopters circled overhead.
Amy stood wrapped in a blanket.
She watched the home where she had grown up disappear behind thick black smoke.
Harold approached quietly.
"I'm sorry."
Amy didn't answer.
Her eyes never left the flames.
Then...
She noticed something strange.
One upstairs window.
Just before the glass shattered...
A shadow moved.
Someone was inside.
The Missing Box
Three hours later, the fire was finally under control.
Fire Marshal Steven Harris entered the remains of the house with investigators.
Amy insisted on following.
The study had been almost completely destroyed.
The hidden safe behind the fireplace had survived.
Its steel door remained intact.
Amy rushed toward it.
The flash drive.
Still there.
The journal.
Still there.
The envelope.
Still there.
She exhaled with relief.
Then she frowned.
"There was something else."
Harold looked inside.
"What?"
"A wooden box."
The safe was empty except for the three items.
Amy was certain.
"There was a fourth compartment."
Harold examined the interior carefully.
Hidden scratches.
Fresh pry marks.
Someone had opened the safe.
Before the fire reached it.
The Fire Marshal's Discovery
Marshal Harris walked over carrying a black evidence bag.
"We found this."
Inside was a melted timing device.
Amy looked confused.
"What is it?"
The marshal answered gravely.
"An electronic ignition system."
Harold frowned.
"You mean..."
"It wasn't an electrical fire."
Harris nodded.
"Someone deliberately started this fire."
Silence fell over the room.
Amy slowly closed her eyes.
Her father's letter echoed in her memory.
Fire destroys paper.
But it also reveals what people are willing to burn.
The CCTV Footage
Late that night, Detective Laura Bennett arrived from the county sheriff's office.
"We recovered partial footage from your security cameras."
Amy immediately sat forward.
"You caught whoever did this?"
Laura hesitated.
"Not exactly."
She played the video.
A black SUV approached the estate twenty minutes before the fire.
The driver wore a hood.
His face couldn't be seen.
But as he walked toward the house...
Amy noticed something.
"He isn't carrying gasoline."
Laura nodded.
"He already knew where he was going."
The man entered through the servants' entrance.
Without forcing the lock.
Alexander frowned.
"Someone let him in."
A Familiar Face
The video continued.
The intruder disappeared for exactly eleven minutes.
Then he emerged carrying something under his coat.
Not large.
About the size of a shoebox.
He entered the SUV and drove away.
Four minutes later...
Smoke appeared from the east wing.
The detective paused the footage.
"Do you recognize him?"
Amy leaned closer.
The hood concealed most of his face.
But when the man opened the car door, his sleeve slipped back.
A distinctive tattoo appeared on his wrist.
Alexander's expression changed instantly.
"I know that tattoo."
Amy turned toward him.
"Who is he?"
Alexander spoke quietly.
"He used to work for my mother."
"A private security contractor."
"He disappeared five years ago."
Detective Bennett looked at him.
"Name?"
Alexander answered without hesitation.
"Marcus Kane."
The detective's eyes widened.
"The former military operative?"
Alexander nodded.
"He doesn't steal documents."
"He completes assignments."
Amy looked toward the smoking ruins of her childhood home.
"So this wasn't about revenge."
Alexander's voice grew grim.
"No."
"They came for something."
"And now they have it."
At that exact moment, Amy's phone vibrated.
An unknown number.
She answered.
A deep male voice spoke only one sentence.
"If you want the box back..."
"Stop looking into your father's death."
The line went dead.
Amy slowly lowered the phone.
Her father had officially died of a heart attack three years earlier.
But now...
For the first time...
May you like
Someone had suggested he hadn't died naturally at all.
