Chapter 10 – Buried Alive

Chapter 10 – Buried Alive
The first thing Elias Ward noticed was the silence.
Not the peaceful silence of a funeral.
Not the respectful silence of mourners saying goodbye.
A different kind.
The silence of people who had discovered something impossible and were afraid to speak.
The cemetery had emptied hours ago, but the image remained.
The open coffin.
The wrong body.
The hidden patient.
The woman beneath the burial vault.
Every piece of evidence pointed toward the same terrifying conclusion.
The funeral had never been a funeral.
It had been an execution.
Detective Lena Cross stood inside the underground control room beneath Ashcroft Medical Center, staring at a security monitor.
The footage displayed a date from three days earlier.
The day Nora Ashcroft was supposedly declared dead.
She watched the recording again.
Then again.
Something bothered her.
Something hidden between the seconds.
"Pause."
Priya Shah stopped the video.
"What do you see?"
Lena pointed at the screen.
"The timeline."
The footage showed Nora being transported from the surgical recovery room.
The official hospital report stated:
Patient expired at 14:35.
But the camera timestamp showed something different.
The transport occurred at:
14:52.
Seventeen minutes after her official death.
"Someone falsified the time."
Owen said.
"More than that."
Lena zoomed in.
"The system recorded her alive."
The room became silent.
A living patient had been turned into a dead one.
Before the hospital even claimed she died.
The Omega archives contained hundreds of similar files.
Patients whose deaths occurred on paper before their final medical procedures.
People who had been removed from society without anyone realizing.
Their families mourned.
Their homes were cleared.
Their identities disappeared.
But the patients...
The patients remained.
Hidden.
Studied.
Controlled.
Priya opened a file marked:
OMEGA PROCEDURE – FINAL PHASE
Her expression changed.
"Lena..."
"What?"
"You need to see this."
The document contained the name:
Nora Ashcroft
Below it:
Subject Classification: OMEGA-01
Lena stared.
"Nora wasn't a victim."
"No."
Priya whispered.
"She was the beginning."
The door behind them opened.
Everyone reached for their weapons.
It was Elias.
He looked exhausted.
"I know."
Lena lowered her gun slightly.
"Know what?"
"The truth about Nora."
Nobody spoke.
Elias walked toward the screen.
"I found the files before you did."
Lena's expression hardened.
"When?"
"Years ago."
The room went still.
"You knew?"
"I knew something was wrong."
He looked at the floor.
"I just didn't understand how wrong."
Elias explained.
After Nora disappeared into the hospital system, he searched her belongings.
He found hidden journals.
Medical notes.
Photographs.
Documents she had never shown him.
She had been investigating Ashcroft Medical Center long before their marriage.
Not as a doctor.
As a patient.
"She was admitted here twenty years ago."
Lena frowned.
"Why?"
"She was seventeen."
Elias looked at the screen.
"She had a rare neurological condition."
"The hospital offered her an experimental treatment."
"And it worked."
"But?"
"The treatment changed her."
"Not physically."
"Memory."
"Personality."
"Parts of her past became fragmented."
Lena looked confused.
"So the hospital manipulated her?"
"Yes."
Elias nodded.
"They convinced her the treatment saved her life."
"It did."
"But they also used her."
Nora became the first successful subject in a program designed to alter damaged neurological pathways.
The hospital called it recovery.
The doctors involved called it evolution.
The patients called it something else.
Survival.
"But why fake her death?"
Owen asked.
Elias closed his eyes.
"Because Nora remembered."
"Remembered what?"
"Everything."
Years earlier, Nora discovered the hospital had continued the program without consent.
Patients were being selected.
Their records erased.
Their deaths fabricated.
She attempted to expose it.
But the people she trusted were the same people controlling the system.
"They didn't kill her."
Elias whispered.
"They buried her."
The funeral footage appeared on the screen.
The moment Nora's coffin arrived.
Except now Lena noticed something she hadn't before.
The funeral director wasn't looking at the coffin.
He was watching the crowd.
Waiting.
Monitoring.
Making sure someone didn't interfere.
Then the footage changed.
A second camera angle.
Inside the funeral home.
Two days before burial.
Dr. Victor Lang stood beside the coffin.
The woman inside was not Nora.
It was Evelyn Carter.
The missing woman.
Lang spoke to someone off-camera.
"Once the burial is complete, Ashcroft's identity disappears permanently."
A pause.
"And her husband?"
Another voice answered.
"He will believe what we need him to believe."
Elias stepped backward.
His face collapsed.
"They used me."
Lena looked at him.
"They used everyone."
But then Priya found something else.
A hidden audio file.
Created hours before the funeral.
They played it.
Static filled the room.
Then Nora's voice.
Weak.
Exhausted.
Terrified.
"If anyone finds this..."
A pause.
"Please understand..."
"I wasn't trying to disappear."
"I was trying to survive."
Another pause.
Then:
"They know I remember."
The recording ended.
The final file opened automatically.
A security photograph.
Taken inside the underground ward.
Nora sat alone in a medical room.
Alive.
Awake.
Looking directly into the camera.
Written beneath the image:
SUBJECT ESCAPED
STATUS: UNKNOWN
RECOVERY AUTHORIZED
Lena stared at the photograph.
The funeral had been a lie.
The coffin had been a deception.
But the most terrifying truth was this:
Someone had not wanted Nora Ashcroft dead.
They had wanted her buried.
Alive.
Hidden from the world.
And now that she had escaped...
May you like
The people who buried her would do anything to finish what they started.
