Chapter 11 – The Chase

Chapter 11 – The Chase
By sunrise, the investigation had become a war.
Not between police and criminals.
Not between truth and lies.
Between those who wanted the past uncovered...
And those who had spent decades making sure it stayed buried.
Detective Lena Cross had learned one thing about powerful people.
They rarely panicked when accused.
They panicked when witnesses started talking.
And now...
The witnesses were disappearing.
The first call came at 6:07 a.m.
Dr. Adrian Holloway was gone.
The hospital records said he had been transferred to emergency surgery after the shooting at the boathouse.
But when Lena arrived at St. Vincent's Medical Center...
No one knew his name.
No admission.
No treatment.
No patient file.
Nothing.
The nurse behind the desk looked uncomfortable.
"Detective, I can assure you..."
"You can't."
Lena placed the photograph of Holloway on the counter.
"This man was brought here last night with a gunshot wound."
The nurse stared at it.
Then slowly shook her head.
"I've never seen him."
Lena walked away from the desk.
Her phone rang.
Owen.
"You found him?"
"No."
A pause.
"Neither did I."
"What do you mean?"
"I checked the ambulance records."
"And?"
"The ambulance that transported him..."
"...doesn't exist."
The realization settled over them.
Someone hadn't just removed a patient.
They had erased an entire chain of events.
The shooting.
The ambulance.
The hospital admission.
The witness.
Everything.
At 9:30 a.m., another witness vanished.
Helen Brooks.
The hospital records supervisor.
The woman who had first discovered Nora's missing file.
Her apartment door was unlocked.
Her coffee was still warm.
Her laptop was open on the kitchen table.
But Helen was gone.
The only thing left behind was a handwritten note.
Three words.
I REMEMBER EVERYTHING
Owen looked at the note.
"Do you think she wrote this?"
Lena studied the handwriting.
"No."
"How can you tell?"
"Because Helen was afraid."
She pointed.
"These letters are too steady."
The message wasn't written by someone saying goodbye.
It was written by someone sending a warning.
By noon, the list of people connected to Ashcroft Medical Center was shrinking.
Former nurses.
Researchers.
Administrators.
Everyone who had touched the Omega program.
Everyone who knew too much.
Gone.
Then Elias called.
His voice was barely recognizable.
"Lena."
"Where are you?"
"I found something."
"Where?"
A pause.
"At home."
The fear in his voice changed everything.
Lena grabbed her jacket.
"Don't move."
When she arrived at Elias's house, the front door was open.
The entire place had been searched.
Drawers emptied.
Books pulled from shelves.
Pictures smashed.
But nothing valuable was missing.
Whoever entered wasn't looking for money.
They were looking for information.
Elias stood in the study holding a small box.
"They knew."
Lena turned.
"Who?"
"The people who erased Nora's records."
He opened the box.
Inside were dozens of letters.
All written by Nora.
Never sent.
"She kept these hidden."
Elias said.
"Why didn't you show us before?"
"Because I was ashamed."
"Of what?"
He looked down.
"Because the last letter..."
He handed it to Lena.
The envelope was dated two weeks before Nora's surgery.
The letter read:
Elias,
If you are reading this, then something has gone wrong.
I need you to understand something.
The woman you married is real.
But there are parts of my life I was forced to forget.
They gave me a second chance once.
Then they tried to take it away.
If they tell you I am dead, don't believe them.
If they tell you I was unstable, don't believe them.
And if they tell you I never loved you...
That will be the biggest lie of all.
Lena lowered the paper.
"Nora knew."
"Yes."
"She knew this could happen."
Elias nodded.
"And she prepared."
A sound came from outside.
A car door closing.
Everyone froze.
Lena moved toward the window.
Across the street sat a black SUV.
Engine running.
No license plates.
"Stay here."
She stepped outside.
The SUV accelerated immediately.
Lena ran after it.
The vehicle turned sharply at the intersection.
She followed.
Her unmarked car screamed through morning traffic.
The chase lasted eight blocks.
The SUV moved like someone who knew exactly where they were going.
Not escaping randomly.
Leading her.
Finally, it stopped beneath an abandoned train bridge.
The driver door opened.
Empty.
The back door opened.
Empty.
But on the seat...
A phone.
Still recording.
Lena picked it up.
A video was already playing.
Dr. Victor Lang appeared on the screen.
Older.
Tired.
But calm.
"Detective Cross."
She stared.
"You're closer than anyone has ever been."
He smiled faintly.
"Which means you have reached the dangerous part."
The video continued.
"You believe this is about hiding crimes."
A pause.
"It's not."
Lena frowned.
"Then what is it about?"
Lang leaned closer to the camera.
"It's about protecting what comes next."
The video ended.
The phone displayed one final message.
OMEGA PHASE TWO BEGINS IN 72 HOURS
Lena stood beneath the bridge, staring at the empty road.
Witnesses were disappearing.
The hospital was cleaning its own trail.
And somewhere out there...
Nora Ashcroft was still alive.
But now the question had changed.
They had spent years hiding what happened in the past.
