Chapter 4 – The Missing Patient

Chapter 4 – The Missing Patient

Ashcroft Medical Center looked exactly as it always had.

Bright corridors.

Freshly polished floors.

Volunteers pushing flower carts.

Doctors walking briskly between departments with tablets tucked beneath their arms.

To every visitor entering through the revolving doors, it was a place devoted to saving lives.

Detective Lena Cross no longer saw it that way.

She saw a building full of answers.

And someone inside was desperately trying to erase them.

At 8:15 a.m., Lena and Detective Owen Mercer stepped into the hospital's Records Department.

Rows of compact shelving stretched across the room.

Computers hummed quietly beneath fluorescent lights.

The records supervisor, Helen Brooks, greeted them with a nervous smile.

"I understand you're investigating Dr. Nora Ashcroft's death."

"We're investigating everything connected to it," Lena replied.

"We need her complete medical file."

Helen nodded.

"It was requested yesterday."

"By whom?"

"I assumed your department."

Lena exchanged a glance with Owen.

"It wasn't us."

Helen's expression faltered.

She turned to her computer.

"That's strange."

The request showed no name.

Only an administrator's authorization code.

And the file had already been checked out.

"Can you track where it went?"

Helen typed rapidly.

The loading circle spun.

Then stopped.

Her face turned pale.

"It's gone."

"What do you mean, gone?"

"The access log has been erased."

Owen frowned.

"Can someone delete hospital records?"

Helen hesitated.

"Not without high-level administrative privileges."

"How many people have that level of access?"

She swallowed.

"Seven."

Lena wrote down every name.

Hospital Director.

Chief Information Officer.

Chief Medical Officer.

Head of Compliance.

Two senior administrators.

And...

Dr. Victor Lang.

Chief of Surgery.

The same surgeon who had performed Nora's operation.

Across the hospital, Dr. Lang stood alone in an operating theater that had been emptied for cleaning.

He removed a flash drive from his coat pocket.

Without speaking, he plugged it into a secure workstation.

A progress bar appeared.

Deleting archived patient records...

32%

41%

57%

He never looked away from the screen.

When the process reached one hundred percent, he removed the drive, snapped it in half, and dropped both pieces into separate medical waste containers.

Then he smiled.

No evidence.

No questions.

Or so he believed.

Meanwhile, forensic analysts examined the hospital bracelet recovered from the unidentified woman in the coffin.

The faded printing revealed something unexpected.

Not just a name.

A room number.

Ward C – Room 417

Lena immediately requested the room's occupancy records.

Helen searched again.

Nothing.

Room 417 had supposedly been vacant for nearly three months.

Yet the bracelet had been issued only days earlier.

"Can we inspect the room?"

Helen hesitated.

"It's under renovation."

"Take us there."

The fourth floor seemed unusually quiet.

Plastic sheets covered parts of the hallway.

Construction signs blocked one corridor.

Room 417 sat at the very end.

Its door was locked.

Maintenance tape stretched across the frame.

Lena noticed something odd.

Dust covered every doorway nearby.

Except this one.

Someone had entered recently.

Very recently.

Owen forced the lock.

The room was immaculate.

Too immaculate.

No furniture.

No equipment.

Fresh paint.

Almost no dust.

"It looks brand new."

Lena slowly crossed the room.

Then she noticed tiny scratches on the floor.

Parallel lines.

The kind left behind by heavy hospital beds being moved repeatedly.

She followed them.

They ended at the far wall.

There, hidden behind a freshly painted cabinet, was a faint outline.

A second door.

Owen pushed against it.

Nothing.

Lena searched the frame.

Her fingers found a concealed electronic keypad hidden beneath the trim.

"No renovation."

She whispered.

"They're hiding something."

Before they could investigate further, every light in the room suddenly went out.

Emergency power activated a second later.

Red lights flooded the hallway.

A computerized voice echoed throughout the hospital.

Security Alert.

Unauthorized access detected.

Doors began locking automatically.

Footsteps thundered somewhere outside.

Not one person.

Several.

Running.

Toward Room 417.

"Someone knows we're here."

Owen said quietly.

Lena drew her service weapon.

"Get ready."

The doorknob rattled violently.

Then stopped.

A calm male voice came through the other side.

"Detective Cross."

She didn't answer.

"You've entered an area that doesn't concern local law enforcement."

The voice remained perfectly composed.

"Open the door."

Lena looked toward the hidden entrance in the wall.

Then back at Owen.

They had seconds to decide.

Face whoever was waiting outside...

Or discover what someone had worked so hard to conceal behind the secret door.

Without another word, Lena reached for the concealed keypad.

Whatever lay beyond it...

Was important enough for someone to erase patient records...

Replace a body...

And lock down an entire hospital.

The screen beside the hidden door flickered to life.

Four words appeared in bright red letters:

AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY

Then...

A soft mechanical click echoed from inside the wall.

The secret door had just unlocked itself.
