Chapter 2 – The Echo Below

Chapter 2 – The Echo Below

The first sound was so faint that no one was certain they had actually heard it.

A soft scrape.

Then another.

It came from beneath the closed lid of a weathered steel burial vault resting beside the open grave.

Every conversation stopped.

Detective Lena Cross slowly raised one hand.

"No one moves."

Rain tapped gently against umbrellas.

Someone's phone rang in the distance before being silenced.

Again.

Scrape...

Tap.

Tap.

Not loud.

Not rhythmic.

Deliberate.

The kind of sound that immediately made every person present question what they believed only seconds earlier.

Elias Ward stood frozen beside the coffin.

His wife, Dr. Nora Ashcroft, had been declared dead forty-eight hours earlier.

He had identified her body.

He had signed every document.

He had chosen the flowers.

Now his entire world was unraveling one impossible sound at a time.

His breathing became shallow.

"Did you hear that?"

No one answered.

No one needed to.

The fear on every face was answer enough.

At the edge of the crowd stood Mara Quinn, soaked by the rain.

The former prison nurse still had her hands raised where security officers had ordered her to remain.

She wasn't looking at the officers.

She wasn't looking at Elias.

She stared only at the coffin.

"I told you."

Her voice was almost a whisper.

"Please..."

"...don't waste another second."

Detective Cross approached the funeral director.

"Who sealed the coffin?"

The man swallowed.

"Our staff."

"Who verified the body before it was closed?"

"I..."

His answer never came.

Another sound interrupted him.

Three slow knocks.

From inside.

Several mourners gasped.

One elderly woman fainted.

A young boy buried his face against his father's coat.

No one could pretend they hadn't heard it now.

"Open it."

Detective Cross spoke calmly.

The funeral director hesitated.

"The paperwork—"

"Open it."

Her voice hardened.

"Now."

Two attendants hurried forward with pry bars.

The first slipped beneath the damaged edge of the lid.

Metal groaned.

Wood cracked.

The heavy seal resisted.

Rainwater trickled through the widening gap.

Every second felt unbearably long.

Elias stepped closer.

His hands shook uncontrollably.

Hope was dangerous.

Hope could destroy a person.

If the sounds meant nothing...

He wasn't sure he could survive losing Nora a second time.

The final latch released with a sharp metallic snap.

The attendants lifted the lid several inches.

Cold air escaped from inside.

Everyone leaned forward.

Silence.

No movement.

No voice.

Only darkness.

Then...

A weak cough.

Not from the coffin.

From somewhere underneath it.

Detective Cross immediately looked down.

"The burial vault."

She knelt beside the concrete chamber.

"The sound isn't coming from the casket."

Her flashlight disappeared through a narrow maintenance opening built into the side of the vault.

The beam illuminated a cramped service compartment below.

Curled against the concrete wall lay a terrified young woman, wrists bound with plastic restraints.

She flinched as the light reached her face.

Her lips were cracked.

Her breathing was shallow.

She lifted trembling fingers toward the opening.

"Please..."

"...don't leave me here."

Every person at the graveside stood speechless.

The body inside the coffin had never moved.

The sounds had come from beneath it all along.

Detective Cross looked toward Mara Quinn.

"You knew someone was trapped."

Mara slowly nodded.

"I just didn't know who."

As paramedics rushed forward, the rescued woman whispered one final sentence before losing consciousness.

"They're watching..."

"...and they'll know I talked."

Detective Cross looked across the cemetery.

Among the sea of black umbrellas...

One mourner was quietly walking away.

No one else seemed to notice.

She did.

And instinct told her the funeral had never been the end of the story.

It had only been the beginning.
