Chapter 8 – The Husband's Secret

Chapter 8 – The Husband's Secret

The words on the monitor refused to disappear.

ASHCROFT, NORA

Status: TRANSFERRED

Location: WARD OMEGA

Elias Ward stared at the screen through the live video feed Detective Lena Cross had sent to his phone.

His wife had been declared dead.

A funeral had been arranged.

A stranger had occupied her coffin.

Yet somewhere beneath Ashcroft Medical Center, the hospital's own system insisted Nora still existed.

Alive.

Lena called him immediately.

"I need you to come to the hospital."

"I'll be there in fifteen minutes."

Before she could end the call, Elias spoke again.

"Detective..."

"Yes?"

"There may be something I've never told anyone."

Forty minutes later, Elias sat inside a small interview room just above the hidden underground wing.

He looked exhausted.

Not from grief alone.

From carrying something for years.

Lena placed a recorder on the table.

"When you're ready."

Elias stared at his wedding ring.

"You think my secret has something to do with this."

"I think someone has been manipulating your life for a long time."

He closed his eyes.

"I've wondered the same thing."

"It started twelve years ago."

"We had only been married for six months."

"Nora came home one evening furious."

"She said several patient files had disappeared."

"What kind of files?"

"Clinical trial records."

Lena leaned forward.

"What happened?"

"She reported it."

"The hospital launched an investigation."

"And?"

"They blamed a junior administrator."

"He was fired."

"Were the files ever recovered?"

"No."

Elias shook his head slowly.

"Nora told me she didn't believe he was responsible."

"Why didn't she keep investigating?"

A sad smile crossed his face.

"She did."

"She just stopped telling me."

Elias reached into his wallet.

From behind an old photograph, he removed a folded piece of paper.

The edges had yellowed with age.

"I found this in her desk after she disappeared."

Lena unfolded it carefully.

At first glance, it looked like an ordinary grocery list.

Milk.

Bread.

Coffee.

Then she noticed the first letter of every line.

Together they spelled one sentence.

THEY READ EVERYTHING

A coded warning.

"I asked Nora about it once."

Elias said quietly.

"She laughed."

"Said she'd been reading too many spy novels."

"You didn't believe her?"

"I wanted to."

He looked toward the observation window.

"I wasn't always honest with her either."

Lena waited.

"There was another reason I accepted the hospital's explanation."

"What reason?"

"My father."

The room became silent.

"My father died at Ashcroft Medical Center."

Elias continued.

"Officially..."

"...it was a heart attack."

"But?"

"I found medication in his belongings."

"Medication that wasn't prescribed."

"You reported it?"

"I tried."

Two days later, hospital attorneys contacted him.

"They told me the medication belonged to another patient."

"They showed me pharmacy records."

"They showed me surveillance footage."

"They showed me signed statements."

Everything pointed in one direction.

Toward Elias himself.

"They implied..."

His voice cracked.

"...that if I continued asking questions..."

"...they would accuse me of stealing controlled drugs from my dying father."

"So you stopped."

"I convinced myself I had imagined everything."

Lena slowly nodded.

"The same pattern."

"What?"

"They don't just hide evidence."

"They manufacture certainty."

"They make victims doubt themselves."

Owen entered carrying another recovered file.

"We identified Dr. Elise Mercer."

Elias looked up.

"I thought she didn't exist."

"Officially, she doesn't."

Owen placed an old staff photograph on the table.

Taken fifteen years earlier, it showed the surgical research department.

One woman stood near the back.

Silver bracelets circled her wrist.

Dr. Elise Mercer.

Her face had been carefully scratched out.

Not by time.

By someone determined to erase her.

"There's more."

Owen said.

"We found payroll records."

"They stopped abruptly."

"No resignation."

"No retirement."

"No death certificate."

"It's as if she vanished overnight."

Elias suddenly remembered something.

"Nora kept mentioning a name."

Lena looked at him.

"What name?"

"Omega."

The detectives exchanged glances.

"Ward Omega."

Elias nodded.

"I thought it was a research project."

"She said..."

He searched his memory.

"...'If Omega ever opens again, no one will be safe.'"

At that exact moment, deep beneath the hospital, the emergency generator powered another forgotten server.

A monitor flickered to life inside a locked office.

An encrypted message appeared automatically.

UNAUTHORIZED ACCESS DETECTED

ACTIVATE OMEGA PROTOCOL

Across the screen, a list of employee names began scrolling.

Some were highlighted green.

Others...

Red.

One name flashed repeatedly.

ELIAS WARD

Back upstairs, Lena's phone vibrated.

It was Priya.

"I've decrypted another folder."

"What did you find?"

"Not what..."

"Who."

A long pause followed.

"The clinical trial that disappeared twelve years ago..."

"...was led by Nora Ashcroft."

Lena frowned.

"That's impossible."

"She didn't work here twelve years ago."

"According to the public records, no."

Priya's voice grew quieter.

"But according to the hidden archive..."

"...she did."

Lena slowly lowered the phone.

Someone had lied to Elias for years.

Not about one event.

About his entire marriage.

Either Nora had hidden a significant part of her past...

Or someone had rewritten it.

And if the secret buried beneath Ward Omega stretched back more than a decade...

Then Nora's disappearance had never been an isolated crime.

May you like

It had been the final chapter of a story that began long before Elias ever met her.
