Chapter 7 – The Underground Ward

Chapter 7 – The Underground Ward
The freight elevator wasn't listed on any hospital blueprint.
Detective Lena Cross stood in the dimly lit maintenance corridor, studying the weathered steel doors hidden behind stacks of unused equipment.
A faded inspection sticker clung to one corner.
The last recorded maintenance had supposedly taken place...
Nineteen years ago.
Yet the metal tracks were spotless.
Someone had been using it.
Recently.
Officer Ben Alvarez knelt beside the control panel.
"The wiring's new."
He peeled back part of the metal cover.
"These cables were installed within the last year."
Owen Mercer frowned.
"So someone modernized an elevator that officially doesn't exist."
Lena nodded.
"Which means wherever it goes..."
"...someone still needs access."
Priya Shah hurried down the hallway carrying a tablet.
"I searched the recovered archive."
She placed a floor plan on the screen.
"The original hospital ended here."
She pointed to a thick concrete wall.
"But according to construction permits from thirty years ago..."
She zoomed farther out.
"...there was another surgical wing."
"What happened to it?"
"It disappeared."
Owen raised an eyebrow.
"Buildings don't disappear."
"They do..."
Priya replied quietly.
"...when someone rewrites the blueprints."
Lena pressed the elevator call button.
Nothing happened.
She tried again.
Still nothing.
Ben examined the panel.
"It isn't broken."
"It's waiting for authorization."
Priya opened another file from Nora Bennett's memory card.
Among hundreds of scanned documents lay a maintenance invoice.
At the bottom, handwritten in blue ink, were six numbers.
041717
Ben entered the code.
The keypad flashed green.
Deep beneath their feet...
Machinery groaned to life.
The elevator slowly rose.
When the doors opened, stale air drifted into the corridor.
The inside smelled of disinfectant and rust.
Only one button appeared on the control panel.
B4
No other floors.
No emergency phone.
No inspection certificate.
Just a single destination.
Lena looked at her team.
"Body cameras on."
One by one, tiny red recording lights illuminated.
The doors closed.
The elevator descended.
The ride lasted far longer than it should have.
Ten seconds.
Twenty.
Thirty.
The display never changed.
No numbers.
No indicators.
Only silence.
Finally...
The elevator stopped.
The doors slid apart.
Darkness waited beyond them.
Emergency lights flickered along a concrete hallway.
Old hospital signs hung crookedly on peeling walls.
Radiology
Isolation
Recovery
Dust coated the ceiling vents.
But the floor...
The floor had fresh footprints.
"This place was abandoned."
Owen whispered.
"It was supposed to be."
Lena replied.
They advanced carefully.
Several patient rooms stood open.
Each contained empty beds covered with white sheets.
Medical monitors sat unplugged.
Cabinets stood bare.
Everything looked as though the staff had left in the middle of an ordinary workday.
Coffee cups still rested on desks.
Clipboards hung beside doors.
Calendars remained open to dates from years earlier.
It felt less like abandonment...
And more like someone had simply frozen time.
Room 12 contained something different.
Photographs.
Dozens of them.
Each showed smiling patients standing beside doctors after successful treatment.
Names had been written beneath every picture.
Lena compared them against the list recovered from Death Certificate #4821.
Her pulse quickened.
Six of the people smiling in those photographs...
Had official death certificates dated months before the pictures were taken.
"They were alive."
Owen whispered.
"After they were declared dead."
No one argued.
The evidence spoke for itself.
At the end of the hallway stood a reinforced steel door.
A biometric scanner glowed beside it.
Unlike everything else underground...
It had been installed recently.
Ben examined the floor.
"There are tire marks."
"Gurneys."
"And lots of them."
Before anyone could react...
The scanner beeped.
A calm computerized voice echoed through the corridor.
Unauthorized personnel detected.
Lockdown initiated.
Heavy steel barriers slammed down behind them.
The elevator disappeared behind an armored security door.
Escape was gone.
Red warning lights began flashing overhead.
Somewhere deeper inside the hidden ward...
A generator roared to life.
Electricity surged through the abandoned corridors.
Monitors that had been dark for years suddenly flickered on.
One by one...
Screens illuminated.
Patient files appeared.
Live security cameras activated.
Ventilation systems hummed.
The underground hospital wasn't abandoned.
It had been sleeping.
Priya stared at one of the monitors.
"Lena..."
She pointed.
The screen displayed a corridor farther inside the complex.
A woman in a hospital gown staggered across the hallway.
Barefoot.
Disoriented.
An IV line still attached to her arm.
She looked directly into the security camera.
Then collapsed.
Another figure rushed into view.
Not a nurse.
Not a doctor.
A man in black tactical clothing.
His face hidden.
He dragged the unconscious woman away.
The screen went black.
Owen drew his weapon.
"We're not looking at old recordings."
"No."
Lena answered.
"We're watching this happen now."
A second monitor activated.
Then a third.
The final screen displayed a digital patient registry.
Only one name appeared in bold red letters.
ASHCROFT, NORA
Status:
TRANSFERRED
Location:
WARD OMEGA
Time:
Eight minutes ago.
Elias had buried an empty identity.
The hospital had erased her records.
But according to its own hidden system...
Nora Ashcroft was still somewhere beneath the building.
Alive.
Lena stepped toward the reinforced door.
Beyond it, faint footsteps echoed through the darkness.
Someone knew they had arrived.
Someone was already moving.
And somewhere inside the underground ward...
The missing doctor was waiting.
Whether as a survivor...
May you like
Or as bait.
