CHAPTER 10 — The Trap Daniel Set for His Wife

CHAPTER 10 — The Trap Daniel Set for His Wife

The message arrived at 6:12 in the morning.

EMILY — COME TO THE EAST OFFICE ALONE.

No signature.

No explanation.

Just an attachment.

A financial transfer authorization.

Emily stared at it for nearly a minute.

Then she noticed the account number.

It belonged to Carter Global.

But the receiving company was unfamiliar.

Whitmore Strategic Recovery LLC.

Her stomach tightened.

She immediately called Daniel.

He didn't answer.

She called again.

Nothing.

Emily looked at the message.

Something was wrong.

Very wrong.

And yet, against every instinct she had developed over the past few months, she went to the east office.

She didn't go alone.

Two members of her legal team followed her at a distance.

She wanted to know who had sent the message.

And why.

She had no idea that, several floors below, Daniel was watching the same security feed.

He was waiting for her to sign.

The east office was empty.

A single folder sat in the middle of the desk.

Emily opened it.

Inside was a contract.

The first page appeared legitimate.

The second page contained a transfer authorization.

The third contained her electronic signature.

Emily froze.

She hadn't signed it.

But the signature looked exactly like hers.

Then she noticed something else.

The document authorized the transfer of $18 million from a Carter Global subsidiary to Whitmore Strategic Recovery.

She immediately understood.

Someone wanted it to look like she had secretly moved Carter money into a Whitmore company.

If the transaction went through, it would appear to be fraud.

And because Emily controlled Carter Global, the consequences would fall directly on her.

She closed the folder.

"Interesting."

A voice came from the doorway.

Daniel.

Emily turned.

He was alone.

"What are you doing here?"

Daniel walked inside.

"You came."

"You asked me to."

"No."

He stopped.

"I didn't."

Emily stared at him.

"The message came from your account."

Daniel's expression didn't change.

"Did it?"

She held up her phone.

"Yes."

He looked at the screen.

Then smiled.

"Good."

Emily's eyes narrowed.

"What does that mean?"

Daniel closed the door.

"It means you followed instructions."

Emily's lawyers moved toward the entrance.

The door wouldn't open.

Locked.

Emily turned toward Daniel.

"Unlock it."

He didn't.

"Daniel."

"You need to listen."

She stared at him.

"Are you threatening me?"

"No."

He walked toward the desk.

"I'm giving you a chance."

"A chance to do what?"

"Sign the authorization."

Emily laughed.

"You forged my signature."

"I created the document."

"That's forgery."

"Not if you sign it."

Emily looked at him.

"And if I don't?"

Daniel's face hardened.

"Then the evidence goes to the authorities."

Emily's heart sank.

"What evidence?"

He placed a second folder on the desk.

Bank statements.

Emails.

Transaction records.

Photographs.

Everything appeared to connect Emily to the transfer.

Daniel spoke quietly.

"Once that money leaves the account, you'll be responsible."

Emily stared at him.

"You set me up."

Daniel said nothing.

She looked at him carefully.

"Why?"

His expression changed.

For the first time, Emily saw something she had never seen in him before.

Fear.

"I need you to sign."

"Who is forcing you?"

Daniel looked away.

"Nobody."

"Daniel."

"I said nobody."

Emily stepped closer.

"Then why are you doing this?"

He didn't answer.

She understood.

"Your father."

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"No."

"Victor?"

Silence.

"Martin?"

Nothing.

Emily's eyes narrowed.

"Who?"

Daniel finally whispered:

"You don't want to know."

Emily sat down.

"Then tell me."

Daniel placed the pen beside the contract.

"Sign it."

"No."

"Emily."

"No."

"You don't understand."

"I understand perfectly."

She pointed at the documents.

"You need me to authorize an eighteen-million-dollar transfer."

"Yes."

"You need the money to enter a Whitmore-controlled company."

"Yes."

"And then you want to claim I stole it."

Daniel's eyes flickered.

"Yes."

Emily stared at him.

"That's your plan?"

He looked away.

"Yes."

She almost laughed.

"You're terrible at this."

His expression hardened.

"You don't know what I'm capable of."

"No."

Emily looked at the security camera in the corner.

"But I know what you've already done."

Daniel froze.

"What does that mean?"

Emily smiled.

"The camera."

He looked toward it.

Then back at her.

"It's not recording."

Emily's smile widened.

"Are you sure?"

Daniel's face changed.

Emily reached into her bag.

She removed a small device.

"This room has three cameras."

Daniel stared.

"I disabled them."

"Two of them."

She held up the device.

"This one is independent."

His expression went pale.

"You planned this."

"No."

She looked at him.

"I anticipated it."

Daniel stepped backward.

"Emily..."

She picked up the contract.

"You forged my signature."

"I didn't—"

"Don't."

She raised a hand.

"Your signature is on the authorization request."

Daniel stared.

"What?"

She turned the document around.

His signature appeared beneath a line marked:

AUTHORIZED BY DANIEL WHITMORE — EXECUTIVE REPRESENTATIVE

He stared.

"I didn't sign that."

Emily smiled.

"You don't recognize the signature?"

"No."

"Neither do I."

She placed another document beside it.

"That's because it was copied from the same old signature your father used years ago."

Daniel froze.

"The signature from the youth investment agreement."

"Yes."

Emily looked at him.

"Someone forged both of us."

Daniel stared at the papers.

"Then this isn't my trap."

"No."

Emily's voice softened.

"Someone wants you to believe it is."

Daniel looked at her.

"What?"

"Think."

She pointed to the transfer.

"Why would I ever sign this?"

"I don't know."

"Exactly."

She pointed to the legal documents.

"Why would you create a trap that leaves your own signature on it?"

Daniel said nothing.

"Why would you lock yourself in a room with me and create a recording proving you committed fraud?"

His face changed.

Emily stepped closer.

"You're not the architect."

Daniel whispered:

"Then who?"

Emily looked at the hidden camera.

"Whoever is watching us."

A loud click came from the ceiling.

Both looked up.

The lights flickered.

Then the computer on the desk turned on.

A video began playing automatically.

Martin Cross appeared.

Daniel's face went white.

"Martin."

Martin smiled at the camera.

"Good morning."

Emily stared at the screen.

"You set this up."

"Of course."

Daniel stepped toward the computer.

"Why?"

Martin laughed.

"Because Daniel was always going to be useful."

Daniel's face hardened.

"You used me."

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because Emily trusts evidence."

Martin looked directly into the camera.

"And nothing is more convincing than evidence created by the person you're trying to destroy."

Emily understood.

Martin had manipulated Daniel into creating a false transaction.

Then he intended to make Daniel look like the mastermind.

Then he would expose the transaction as proof that Emily and Daniel had conspired together.

Two people.

One crime.

One perfect scandal.

Martin continued:

"By noon, the financial regulators will receive the transaction."

Emily looked at Daniel.

"They'll think we did it."

Martin smiled.

"They'll think you did it."

Then the screen went black.

Daniel looked devastated.

"I never meant for this to happen."

Emily stared at him.

"You still tried to trap me."

"I was trying to protect you."

"No."

Her voice was cold.

"You were trying to save yourself."

He lowered his eyes.

"You're right."

She picked up her phone.

"What are you doing?"

"Calling the investigators."

Daniel looked alarmed.

"Emily."

"You committed a crime."

"I know."

"You tried to frame me."

"I know."

"And now you're going to tell the truth."

Daniel nodded.

"Yes."

Emily stopped.

"You agree?"

"I have no choice."

"No."

She looked at him.

"You have a choice."

Daniel looked at her.

"And this time, choose."

He closed his eyes.

Then nodded.

"I'll tell them everything."

Within an hour, investigators arrived.

The room was sealed.

The computers were confiscated.

The contract was photographed.

The recording was preserved.

Daniel gave a full statement.

He admitted that he had attempted to create a fraudulent transaction.

He admitted that he had intended to make Emily appear responsible.

He admitted that someone had pressured him.

And then he named the person.

"Martin Cross."

The investigator looked at him.

"Do you have proof?"

Emily answered.

"We do now."

She pointed to the independent recording.

The investigator watched it.

When Martin's face appeared, the room became silent.

After the recording ended, the investigator looked at Daniel.

"You understand that you have just implicated yourself."

Daniel nodded.

"Yes."

"And your wife?"

"I lied about her."

"Why?"

Daniel looked at Emily.

"Because I was afraid."

The investigators took Daniel away for questioning.

Emily remained in the office.

For the first time in weeks, she was alone.

She looked at the forged transaction.

The eighteen million dollars had never moved.

The account remained untouched.

The trap had failed.

But something about the transaction bothered her.

She looked at the receiving account again.

Whitmore Strategic Recovery LLC.

She searched the company registration.

The company had been created six days earlier.

Director:

Daniel Whitmore.

Beneficial owner:

Unknown.

Emily frowned.

"Unknown?"

She opened the incorporation documents.

The registered agent was a law firm.

The same law firm that had prepared her prenup.

Emily's heart sank.

She opened the ownership records.

The company was controlled through a trust.

The trustee's name appeared.

Emily stopped breathing.

Martin Cross.

She leaned back.

Everything connected.

The prenup.

The marriage.

The fraudulent transaction.

The Whitmore debt.

The Carter acquisition.

Martin had built the entire network.

But why?

Emily searched the archive again.

A hidden document appeared.

PROJECT ECLIPSE

She opened it.

The first page contained one sentence:

Objective: Transfer Carter Global control to a non-Carter beneficiary.

Emily scrolled.

The beneficiary name was redacted.

She opened the authorization layer.

The system requested a biometric confirmation.

Emily placed her hand on the scanner.

The document opened.

She read the beneficiary name.

Her blood went cold.

It wasn't Martin.

It wasn't Victor.

It wasn't Robert.

It wasn't Daniel.

It was—

CLAIRE WHITMORE.

Emily stared.

"No."

Claire had been telling the truth.

She had been afraid.

She had betrayed Daniel.

She had confessed.

But there was something she had never told them.

Martin had promised Claire control of Carter Global.

Not forty million.

Not a division.

Everything.

Emily read the final page.

Condition for transfer: Emily Carter must be legally discredited as controlling principal.

And beneath it:

Primary mechanism: fraudulent financial activity.

Emily understood.

The trap wasn't designed merely to destroy her marriage.

It was designed to remove her from the company.

And Daniel had been the weapon.

Claire had been the beneficiary.

Martin had been the architect.

But there was one question left.

Why would Martin give the entire Carter empire to Claire?

Emily searched deeper.

Another document appeared.

FAMILY RELATIONSHIP CONFIRMATION

She opened it.

Then stopped.

The first line read:

Claire Whitmore is not Robert Whitmore's biological daughter.

Emily's heart pounded.

The next line contained the identity of Claire's biological father.

Emily read it.

Then slowly sat down.

Because the name wasn't unfamiliar.

It was one she had seen before.

One she had heard in her father's recordings.

One connected to the Black Trust.

One connected to the original creation of Carter Global.

Thomas Carter.

Emily's father.

Claire was her half-sister.

Daniel returned an hour later.

He looked exhausted.

He stopped when he saw Emily's face.

"What happened?"

Emily didn't answer.

"What did you find?"

She pushed the document toward him.

Daniel read it.

His eyes widened.

"Claire..."

"She's my sister."

Daniel looked up.

"What?"

"Half-sister."

He read the document again.

"That's impossible."

Emily shook her head.

"It's true."

Daniel stared at the page.

"Then Robert knew?"

"Yes."

"Martin knew?"

"Yes."

"And Claire?"

Emily's voice was quiet.

"I don't know."

Daniel sat down.

"Then the marriage..."

Emily looked at him.

"Was even more carefully planned than we thought."

Daniel's face hardened.

"Why would Martin want Claire to control Carter Global?"

Emily stared at the final page.

"Because he wasn't planning to give her the company."

Daniel frowned.

"Then what?"

Emily pointed to a clause.

Beneficiary assumes control only upon completion of Project Eclipse.

Daniel read it.

"What does that mean?"

Emily looked at him.

"It means Claire is a placeholder."

"For who?"

Emily's phone rang.

Unknown number.

She answered.

No one spoke.

Then a man's voice whispered:

"You're finally reading the right file."

Emily froze.

"Who are you?"

The voice laughed.

"Ask Claire."

The call ended.

Daniel looked at her.

"What did he say?"

Emily stared at the screen.

"Ask Claire."

Then another message arrived.

A photograph.

Claire.

Standing beside Martin.

And between them—

a man Emily had believed was dead.

Her father.

Alive.

Emily dropped the phone.

Daniel caught it.

His face drained of color.

"Emily..."

She could barely speak.

"That's my father."

The photograph was dated three days earlier.

Three days earlier.

Emily stared at the date.

Her father had supposedly died years ago.

Yet the photograph showed him standing beside Martin and Claire.

Alive.

Smiling.

And beneath the photograph was one final sentence:

THE TRAP WAS NEVER ABOUT MONEY.

IT WAS ABOUT BRINGING YOUR FATHER HOME.

Emily looked at Daniel.

For the first time, neither of them knew which truth to believe.

Because if her father was alive—

then everything they had believed about his death had been a lie.

And the man Daniel thought he had been protecting his wife from...

May you like

might have been the very man who had been waiting for her to discover the trap all along.

TO BE CONTINUED.
