CHAPTER 2 — The Woman Emily Called

CHAPTER 2 — The Woman Emily Called
The address on Emily's phone belonged to a building that had been abandoned for almost six years.
At least, that was what the public records said.
The old Carter Legal Center stood at the edge of the financial district, its windows dark and its brass sign covered in dust.
Emily stood across the street.
She didn't move.
Her father's former attorney had supposedly died in that building.
Samuel Reed.
The man who had handled the Carter family trust.
The man who had disappeared six years ago.
The man whose voice had just warned her not to trust her husband.
Behind Emily, a black sedan stopped.
Daniel stepped out.
She turned.
"I told you not to follow me."
"I know."
"Then why are you here?"
"Because I'm your husband."
Emily laughed bitterly.
"Apparently that means very little tonight."
Daniel flinched.
"I don't know who sent that recording."
"But you know your mother lied."
"Yes."
"You know Claire lied."
"Yes."
"And you knew about the trust."
"I knew my family wanted access to it."
"That's not the same answer."
Daniel looked away.
Emily crossed her arms.
"Did you know they planned to manipulate me into signing away my voting rights?"
He didn't answer.
"Daniel."
His shoulders dropped.
"Yes."
The answer hurt more than she expected.
Emily nodded slowly.
"Then you should go home."
"I'm not leaving you here."
"You don't get to protect me after helping put me in danger."
"I know."
"Then leave."
Daniel looked at the abandoned building.
"I can't."
"Why?"
"Because there's something you don't know."
Emily's expression hardened.
"What?"
Daniel stepped closer.
"My father didn't create the plan."
Emily stared at him.
"Who did?"
He looked at her.
"I don't know."
"You're lying."
"I'm not."
"Then why are you afraid?"
Daniel swallowed.
"Because I think the person behind this knows you."
Emily froze.
"That's what the message said."
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
"What message?"
Emily didn't answer.
She turned toward the building.
Then her phone rang.
Unknown number.
She answered.
"Hello?"
A woman's voice spoke.
"Emily."
Emily's heart stopped.
She knew that voice.
She had heard it only twice in her entire life.
Once when she was seventeen.
And once at her father's funeral.
The woman spoke again.
"Don't trust the man standing behind you."
Emily slowly turned.
Daniel was staring at her.
His face had gone pale.
Emily whispered:
"Who are you?"
The woman answered:
"You know me."
Then the line went dead.
Daniel stared at Emily.
"Who was that?"
Emily didn't answer.
"Emily."
She looked at him.
"You really don't know?"
"Know what?"
"The woman I just called."
Daniel shook his head.
"I don't know who that was."
Emily smiled.
"Good."
"Why?"
"Because she doesn't want you to."
Daniel's expression changed.
"Emily, please."
She walked toward the building.
He followed.
"Stop."
She turned.
"Why?"
"Because if you go inside, there's no going back."
Emily stared at him.
"There hasn't been a way back since you threw that plate at me."
Daniel looked down.
"I didn't throw it at you."
"No."
"You dropped it."
"You ordered me to serve your sister."
"Yes."
"You told me I had to obey you."
"Yes."
"And then you watched me cut my hand on the broken pieces."
Daniel closed his eyes.
"I know."
"Do you?"
He looked at her.
"For the first time."
Emily's expression softened for half a second.
Then hardened again.
"Too late."
She turned the handle.
The door opened.
Inside, the building smelled of dust and old paper.
Emily switched on her flashlight.
Daniel followed.
"Where are we going?"
"Third floor."
"Why?"
"Because that's where Samuel Reed's office was."
They climbed the stairs.
Every step echoed.
At the third floor, Emily stopped outside a door.
The nameplate was still there.
SAMUEL REED — ATTORNEY AT LAW
Daniel stared.
"This place was supposed to have been cleared."
"Apparently it wasn't."
Emily opened the door.
The office was almost untouched.
Bookshelves.
Desk.
Old computer.
A framed photograph of her father.
Emily walked toward it.
Behind the photograph was a small envelope.
She opened it.
Inside was a single key.
And a note.
If Emily comes alone, give her the truth.
Daniel looked over her shoulder.
"Alone."
Emily folded the note.
"Yes."
"Then why did you bring me?"
"I didn't."
He understood.
She hadn't invited him.
He had followed.
A sound came from the hallway.
Both of them froze.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Measured.
Someone was approaching.
Daniel moved in front of Emily.
"Stay behind me."
She almost laughed.
"You're still doing that?"
"What?"
"Trying to protect me."
The footsteps stopped.
A shadow appeared beneath the door.
Then the handle turned.
Emily raised her phone.
The door opened.
An elderly woman stood there.
She wore a dark coat.
Her silver hair was tied neatly behind her head.
Her expression was calm.
Daniel stared.
"No."
The woman looked at him.
"Hello, Daniel."
His face drained of color.
"You."
Emily looked between them.
"You know her?"
Daniel couldn't answer.
The woman smiled.
"I am the person your family has spent twenty years trying to erase."
She looked at Emily.
"And the person your father trusted most."
Emily's heart pounded.
"Your name?"
The woman stepped inside.
"Margaret Reed."
Samuel Reed's wife.
Emily had met her once.
At her father's funeral.
She had been told Margaret was a distant family friend.
But apparently—
nothing about her was accidental.
Margaret closed the door.
"Daniel, leave."
He shook his head.
"No."
She looked at him.
"You have no idea what your family is involved in."
"I know enough."
"No."
She pointed toward Emily.
"You know enough to be dangerous to yourself."
Daniel looked at Emily.
"I won't leave her."
Margaret smiled sadly.
"Then perhaps you're finally becoming the man your mother thought you were."
Daniel stiffened.
"What does that mean?"
"It means you have spent your entire life obeying people who never deserved your loyalty."
He looked away.
Emily stepped forward.
"Tell me everything."
Margaret nodded.
"Your father didn't die because of an accident."
Emily froze.
"What?"
"He was murdered."
Daniel looked shocked.
"Who?"
Margaret ignored him.
"Your father discovered that your inheritance had been targeted before you were even born."
Emily whispered:
"By whom?"
Margaret looked at her.
"By a group called the Meridian Circle."
Daniel frowned.
"What's that?"
"A private financial network."
"How powerful?"
Margaret's eyes hardened.
"Powerful enough to buy companies."
"Judges."
"Lawyers."
"Politicians."
"And families."
Emily felt cold.
"Daniel's family?"
Margaret nodded.
"Your father discovered that the Whitmores were one of their most useful fronts."
Daniel stepped backward.
"My father?"
"Yes."
"And my mother?"
"Your mother is deeper in than you know."
Daniel shook his head.
"No."
Margaret looked at him.
"You want to believe she is only greedy."
Daniel said nothing.
"But greed isn't what drives Margaret Whitmore."
"What does?"
"Fear."
Margaret walked toward a filing cabinet.
She unlocked it.
Inside was a thick black file.
She placed it on the desk.
The label read:
CARTER — EMILY
Emily opened it.
The first page was a photograph.
Emily at age eight.
Then twelve.
Then sixteen.
Then twenty.
Each photograph had a date.
She stared.
"Someone has been watching me."
"For years."
"Who?"
Margaret looked at Daniel.
"His family."
Daniel went pale.
"My family?"
"Yes."
Emily flipped through the pages.
School records.
Medical appointments.
Travel documents.
Bank accounts.
Friends.
Relationships.
Everything.
Then she found one page that made her hands shake.
ASSESSMENT: EMILY CARTER
Psychological profile: compliant.
Risk of resistance: low.
Estimated value of inherited assets: $1.8 billion.
She laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was unbelievable.
"They thought I was weak."
Margaret shook her head.
"They needed to believe you were."
"Why?"
"Because if they knew the real Emily Carter..."
Margaret paused.
"...they would have never allowed you to marry Daniel."
Daniel stared.
"What does that mean?"
Margaret looked directly at Emily.
"Tell him."
Emily said nothing.
Margaret continued.
"Tell your husband who you really are."
Daniel looked confused.
Emily closed the file.
"He's going to find out."
"Now?"
"Yes."
She turned toward him.
"My father didn't leave me only money."
Daniel stared.
"What else?"
Emily took a breath.
"He left me control."
"Control of what?"
"The Carter Trust."
"I know about the trust."
"No."
She stepped closer.
"You know about the public trust."
Daniel's face changed.
Emily continued.
"My father created a second trust."
Margaret smiled.
"One nobody in your family knew existed."
Emily nodded.
"The Black Trust."
Daniel whispered:
"Black Trust?"
"It contains the controlling votes of every major Carter company."
Daniel stared at her.
"How much?"
Emily looked him directly in the eyes.
"Enough to make your family's entire empire dependent on my signature."
Silence.
Daniel finally understood.
His family hadn't married him to Emily because she was vulnerable.
They had married him to her because she controlled everything they wanted.
Margaret handed Emily another document.
"This is why I called you."
Emily read it.
A legal authorization.
Signed by her father.
It named Margaret Reed as temporary guardian of the Black Trust until Emily turned thirty.
Emily looked up.
"I'm twenty-nine."
Margaret nodded.
"In forty-eight hours, control transfers completely to you."
Daniel's face went white.
"Forty-eight hours?"
"Yes."
Emily understood.
The timing of the wedding.
The sudden pressure.
The rushed financial documents.
Everything.
They had known.
They were trying to force her to sign before the transfer.
Daniel looked at Emily.
"My mother knew."
"Yes."
"Claire knew."
"Yes."
"And you?"
Margaret looked at him.
"I knew."
He stared.
"Then why didn't you stop them?"
"Because we needed evidence."
Daniel's voice cracked.
"You used my wife."
"No."
Margaret looked at Emily.
"Your wife used herself."
Daniel stepped toward Emily.
"How long have you known?"
"Since before the wedding."
"You knew about the Black Trust?"
"Yes."
"You knew my family was trying to take it?"
"Yes."
"And you still married me?"
Emily nodded.
"Yes."
"Why?"
She looked at him.
"Because I needed to know whether you were part of the plan."
Daniel swallowed.
"And now?"
Emily's voice was quiet.
"Now I know."
He closed his eyes.
"I'm sorry."
"I know."
"I never meant for you to get hurt."
"But you let it happen."
"Yes."
"I never meant to love you."
Daniel opened his eyes.
Emily continued.
"But you did."
He stared at her.
"And that's why this hurts."
Margaret stepped toward the window.
"We don't have much time."
Emily looked at her.
"What happens in forty-eight hours?"
"You take control."
"And the Whitmores?"
"They lose access."
"To the company?"
"To everything."
Daniel suddenly understood.
"My father knows."
"Yes."
"That's why he pushed the marriage."
"Yes."
"And if Emily doesn't sign..."
Margaret smiled.
"They lose billions."
Daniel looked at Emily.
"So that's why you took off your ring."
Emily nodded.
"Because the marriage was their weapon."
She looked down at the ring inside her pocket.
"And now it's mine."
A loud crash came from downstairs.
Everyone froze.
Margaret's expression changed.
"They found us."
Daniel looked toward the door.
"Who?"
Margaret whispered:
"Your family."
Emily's phone rang.
Claire.
Emily answered.
"Emily."
Claire's voice trembled.
"Please."
"What?"
"You have to leave."
"Why?"
"Mom knows."
"Knows what?"
"Everything."
Emily's eyes narrowed.
Claire continued:
"She knows about the Black Trust."
"How?"
"Daniel's father told her."
Emily looked at Daniel.
Then Claire whispered:
"He's coming for you."
The call ended.
Daniel stepped toward the door.
"Emily, we have to go."
"No."
"What?"
She picked up the file.
"I'm done running."
Margaret stared at her.
"Then what will you do?"
Emily looked at the security camera mounted in the corner.
She smiled.
"Let them come."
The door downstairs slammed open.
Voices echoed through the building.
Daniel's father's voice.
"Find her!"
Claire screamed:
"Emily!"
Emily stood perfectly still.
Daniel looked at her.
"What are you planning?"
She reached for her phone.
"The person I called tonight."
He frowned.
"Who?"
Emily smiled.
"You've already met her."
Margaret looked at Daniel.
"No."
Emily nodded.
"Yes."
She pressed the call button.
A voice answered immediately.
"Emily?"
Emily looked at Daniel.
Then at Margaret.
Then toward the stairs.
And finally said:
"Mom, they're here."
Daniel froze.
His mother's face appeared in his mind.
His real mother.
The woman he had been told died twenty years ago.
The woman whose name had never been spoken in his house.
Margaret's expression changed.
"You weren't supposed to call her yet."
Emily whispered:
"I changed my mind."
The voice on the phone said:
"Then let them come."
Emily smiled.
Because she finally understood why her father had spent years preparing for this moment.
She wasn't alone.
She had never been alone.
And the woman she had just called was the one person Daniel's family feared more than anyone else.
His biological mother.
The woman who had disappeared twenty years ago.
The woman who had created the Black Trust with Emily's father.
May you like
And the woman who was about to come home.
TO BE CONTINUED.
