CHAPTER 6 — The Security Footage

CHAPTER 6 — The Security Footage
The screen went black.
For several seconds, Emily could see nothing except her own reflection.
Then the first recording appeared.
A timestamp flashed across the corner.
MARCH 12 — 11:43 P.M.
The kitchen.
Three months before the wedding.
Daniel stood beside the counter.
Claire sat at the table.
Neither of them knew the camera was recording.
Emily leaned closer.
Daniel was speaking.
"We can't let her know about the trust."
Claire nodded.
"I know."
"Once she's married to me, she'll listen."
Emily's fingers tightened around the edge of the desk.
Daniel continued:
"She trusts me."
Claire smiled.
"That's why this will work."
The recording ended.
Emily didn't move.
Daniel stood behind her.
He looked sick.
"I don't remember that conversation."
Emily turned.
"You said it."
"I know."
"You said I trusted you."
Daniel lowered his eyes.
"I know."
"How long were you planning this?"
He didn't answer.
Emily turned back to the screen.
"Keep playing."
The second recording began.
MARCH 18 — 9:17 P.M.
Claire entered the kitchen carrying a folder.
Daniel was already there.
She placed the folder on the counter.
"She signed the preliminary documents."
Daniel smiled.
"Good."
"But the final transfer isn't until after the wedding."
"I know."
"Then we need the prenup."
Daniel looked at her.
"The lawyer will handle it."
Claire shook her head.
"The lawyer is nervous."
"About what?"
"Emily's father."
Daniel laughed.
"He's dead."
Claire's expression hardened.
"His lawyers aren't."
Daniel leaned against the counter.
"Then replace them."
Emily stopped the video.
Daniel stared at the frozen image.
"Who was the lawyer?"
Emily looked at him.
"The same one who prepared our prenup."
Daniel's face changed.
"The one who supposedly worked for your family."
"Yes."
She started the recording again.
Claire's voice filled the room.
"If we change the agreement at the last minute, she'll probably sign."
Daniel nodded.
"She trusts legal documents."
Claire laughed.
"She trusts people."
Emily paused.
Her eyes closed.
That sentence hurt more than anything else.
Not because it was true.
Because it had been used against her.
The third recording was worse.
APRIL 2 — 7:32 P.M.
Daniel sat at the kitchen table.
Claire stood beside him.
A third person entered.
Robert.
Emily's stomach tightened.
Her father-in-law placed a black briefcase on the table.
"The wedding is in two weeks."
Daniel nodded.
"Everything is ready."
Robert opened the briefcase.
Inside were several documents.
"Once she signs, the first stage is complete."
Claire asked:
"What about the Black Trust?"
Robert looked at her.
"We don't touch it."
Daniel frowned.
"Why?"
"Because we can't."
Robert's voice was cold.
"We control Emily."
He pointed to the documents.
"That's enough."
Emily's eyes widened.
Robert continued:
"Her accounts are protected."
"But her decisions aren't."
Daniel stared at him.
"What does that mean?"
"It means we don't steal her money."
Robert smiled.
"We make her give it to us."
Emily stopped the video.
Daniel turned away.
"God."
She stared at him.
"You knew."
"Not all of it."
"You knew enough."
He didn't argue.
"I did."
"Then why didn't you stop them?"
Daniel looked at her.
"Because I thought I could control it."
Emily laughed.
"That's exactly what they said about me."
"I know."
"You thought you could marry me, keep your father happy, and somehow protect me from the inside."
Daniel's expression broke.
"Yes."
"And you thought that made you better than them."
"No."
Emily looked at him.
"Didn't you?"
He was silent.
That was answer enough.
The fourth recording showed something Emily hadn't expected.
APRIL 8 — 2:11 A.M.
Claire was alone.
She was crying.
She picked up the phone.
"He's going to do it."
A man's voice answered.
Emily couldn't hear the response.
Claire continued:
"I don't think Daniel can handle this."
A pause.
"No."
Another pause.
"Because he actually loves her."
Emily froze.
Daniel looked at the screen.
Claire continued:
"If she finds out, he'll choose her."
The voice on the phone spoke again.
Claire whispered:
"Then we'll have to make sure he doesn't have a choice."
The recording ended.
Daniel stared at the screen.
"I never knew."
Emily looked at him.
"You loved me."
He swallowed.
"Yes."
"But you still helped them."
"Yes."
She nodded.
"That's what makes this so difficult."
The fifth recording was from the day before their wedding.
APRIL 19 — 6:44 P.M.
Daniel stood in the kitchen.
Claire entered.
She looked nervous.
"She asked me about the trust."
Daniel stiffened.
"What did you tell her?"
"Nothing."
"Good."
"Daniel..."
"What?"
"I think we should stop."
He stared at her.
"Why?"
"Because she's not what Dad thinks."
Daniel laughed.
"What do you mean?"
"She's investigating."
"She's always been curious."
"No."
Claire shook her head.
"She's suspicious."
Daniel walked closer.
"Did she find anything?"
"No."
"Then we're fine."
Claire lowered her voice.
"What if she finds the cameras?"
Daniel smiled.
"She won't."
Emily paused the recording.
Her eyes went directly to the camera in the corner.
Daniel noticed.
"What?"
"They knew about the cameras."
His face changed.
"They knew?"
"Yes."
Emily rewound the recording.
Claire's words played again.
What if she finds the cameras?
Daniel stared.
"Then why didn't they remove them?"
Emily looked at the equipment.
"Because these cameras weren't installed by your family."
Daniel frowned.
"Who installed them?"
Emily answered:
"My father."
The realization hit both of them.
The cameras weren't evidence created after the betrayal.
They were evidence created before it.
Emily's father had anticipated that someone would attempt to control her.
He had left behind a silent witness.
Every argument.
Every conversation.
Every plan.
Every lie.
Recorded.
Stored.
Waiting.
Emily looked at Daniel.
"He knew."
Daniel nodded.
"He knew someone would come for you."
"Yes."
"And he expected you to find this."
"Yes."
They continued.
Recording after recording.
There were dozens.
Some were meaningless.
Some were terrifying.
Daniel and Claire discussing Emily's habits.
Her schedule.
Her weaknesses.
The people she trusted.
The things that frightened her.
One recording showed Claire standing in Emily's bedroom.
She opened a drawer.
Daniel entered.
"What are you doing?"
"Looking for her passport."
"Why?"
"After the wedding, Dad wants her to travel with me."
"Why?"
"To sign the international documents."
Daniel frowned.
"Why can't she sign them here?"
Claire looked at him.
"Because the foreign subsidiary has different rules."
Emily stopped the recording.
"She was going to take me out of the country."
Daniel looked horrified.
"I didn't know."
"Would you have stopped her?"
He hesitated.
"I don't know."
Emily stared at him.
"That's the problem."
Another recording.
APRIL 15 — 10:22 P.M.
Claire sat with Robert.
Robert was speaking.
"Once Emily signs, the trust will be temporarily accessible."
Claire nodded.
"And Daniel?"
"Daniel gets the house."
Claire smiled.
"And me?"
"You get the international division."
Emily looked at Daniel.
"Your sister was promised a company."
Daniel shook his head.
"I didn't know."
"And you?"
Robert's voice continued.
"Daniel gets the marriage."
Claire laughed.
"What does that mean?"
"It means he gets a wife."
Robert smiled.
"And eventually, a divorce settlement."
Emily's face went cold.
Daniel stared at the screen.
"They planned to divorce us."
"After taking control."
"Yes."
Claire's voice appeared again.
"What if Emily refuses?"
Robert answered:
"Then make her believe Daniel is leaving."
Daniel went pale.
Emily understood.
They had planned to emotionally break her.
Make her desperate.
Then offer a financial solution.
The marriage itself had been a trap.
The final recording was different.
It was from two nights before the wedding.
Daniel sat alone in the kitchen.
He looked exhausted.
He picked up his phone.
"I can't do this."
Someone answered.
Daniel continued:
"I know what Dad wants."
A pause.
"But she doesn't deserve this."
Another pause.
"No."
His voice broke.
"I won't hurt her."
Then the door opened.
Claire entered.
Daniel immediately ended the call.
Claire stared at him.
"Who were you talking to?"
"No one."
"Daniel."
"I said no one."
Claire walked closer.
"You're falling for her."
He said nothing.
Claire shook her head.
"If you choose her, Dad will destroy you."
Daniel looked up.
"Maybe."
"Do you understand what you're saying?"
"Yes."
"Then why?"
Daniel whispered:
"Because she's the first person I've ever wanted more than my father's approval."
Emily stared at the screen.
The room became silent.
Daniel looked at her.
"I meant it."
Emily wiped a tear from her cheek.
"Then why didn't you choose me?"
He couldn't answer.
She already knew.
Fear.
Weakness.
Family.
All the things that had mattered more than courage.
Emily closed the laptop.
"We have enough."
Daniel nodded.
"More than enough."
"No."
Emily looked at him.
"We have everything."
She gathered the recordings.
The original files.
The timestamps.
The backups.
The metadata.
Every piece of evidence had been preserved automatically by her father's system.
Daniel watched her.
"What are you going to do?"
Emily stood.
"I'm going to show them."
"All of it?"
"All of it."
"Your family."
"My family."
"Claire."
"Claire."
"Me."
Emily stopped.
"Yes."
Daniel's voice became quiet.
"Even the recordings where I tried to protect you?"
Emily looked at him.
"Especially those."
"Why?"
"Because if I only show the parts that make you look guilty, they can claim I'm manipulating the evidence."
She closed the case.
"I'm not going to manipulate anything."
"Then what?"
"Let the truth speak."
That afternoon, Emily delivered the recordings to her attorneys.
The lawyers watched in silence.
When the final recording ended, one of them removed his glasses.
"Mrs. Whitmore."
Emily looked at him.
"Yes?"
"You understand what this means?"
"Yes."
"Your husband and his family may have committed multiple forms of fraud."
"I know."
"Attempted financial coercion."
"Yes."
"Potential identity theft."
"Yes."
"And conspiracy."
Emily nodded.
"What about the marriage?"
The attorney paused.
"That depends on what you want."
Emily looked at the wedding ring sitting inside her purse.
"I don't know yet."
That evening, Daniel came to her room.
He stood outside the door.
"Can I come in?"
Emily hesitated.
"Yes."
He entered.
He looked different.
Smaller somehow.
The confidence was gone.
"I watched the final recording again."
Emily said nothing.
"I was afraid."
"I know."
"I thought I could fix everything after the wedding."
"You couldn't."
"I know."
He looked at her.
"I don't expect you to forgive me."
"Good."
"But I want you to know something."
Emily waited.
"I never wanted your money."
She looked at him.
"Maybe not."
"I wanted you."
"Then why did you let them use you?"
His eyes filled with tears.
"Because I spent my entire life believing that if I obeyed my father long enough, he'd eventually love me."
Emily's expression softened.
"And did he?"
Daniel shook his head.
"No."
Silence.
"I finally understand something."
"What?"
"He never wanted a son."
Emily frowned.
"He wanted an heir."
Daniel looked down.
"And I spent my entire life trying to become what he wanted."
He raised his eyes.
"Until I met you."
Emily didn't answer.
Daniel walked toward the door.
Before leaving, he stopped.
"There's one more thing."
"What?"
"I found something in my father's office."
Emily looked at him.
"What?"
"A list."
"Of what?"
"People he wanted removed."
Emily's stomach tightened.
"Removed how?"
Daniel looked at her.
"Some were fired."
"Some were threatened."
"Some disappeared."
Emily stared.
"Who's on the list?"
Daniel took a folded paper from his pocket.
He placed it on the desk.
Emily opened it.
The first names meant nothing.
Then she saw the last one.
Her breath caught.
Margaret Reed.
Daniel's biological mother.
The woman believed to have disappeared twenty years ago.
Emily looked up.
"Why would your father want her gone?"
Daniel's face was pale.
"Because she knows the truth about my father's first crime."
"What crime?"
Daniel shook his head.
"I don't know."
Emily folded the list.
"Then we find out."
Suddenly, the house alarm sounded.
Both of them froze.
A guard shouted from downstairs.
"Someone is inside!"
Daniel grabbed Emily's hand.
They ran toward the hallway.
The security monitors flickered.
One camera after another went black.
Then a final image appeared.
A woman standing at the front gate.
Silver hair.
Dark coat.
Calm expression.
Emily recognized her immediately.
Margaret Reed.
Daniel stared at the screen.
"My mother."
The woman looked directly into the camera.
Then raised a piece of paper.
A message was written across it.
STOP WATCHING THE PAST.
She turned the paper over.
The second message appeared.
WATCH WHAT HAPPENS TONIGHT.
Emily's phone rang.
She answered.
Margaret's voice was calm.
"I told you the cameras would show you who betrayed you."
Emily swallowed.
"Why are you here?"
"Because now you need to see who ordered them."
"Who?"
A pause.
Then Margaret whispered:
"Your father."
Emily froze.
"My father?"
"Yes."
"Why would he record Daniel's family?"
"Because he wasn't recording them."
Margaret's voice became quieter.
"He was recording me."
The line went dead.
Emily stared at the screen.
Daniel looked at her.
"What does that mean?"
Emily had no answer.
But one thing was suddenly clear.
The security footage hadn't revealed the end of the conspiracy.
It had only opened another door.
And behind that door was a secret involving both their fathers—
May you like
and the woman Daniel's family had spent twenty years pretending was dead.
TO BE CONTINUED.
