CHAPTER 4 — Claire’s Secret Deal

CHAPTER 4 — Claire’s Secret Deal

Claire had always believed she was the smartest person in the Whitmore family.

She knew which lies to tell.

Which secrets to keep.

Which people to flatter.

And, most importantly, which people to sacrifice when things went wrong.

But that night, sitting across from Emily at the long dining table, Claire finally realized something she had never considered.

She had underestimated the wrong woman.

Emily placed the original prenuptial agreement between them.

"Start talking."

Claire stared at the document.

"I already told you."

"No."

Emily's voice was calm.

"You told me you had no choice."

Claire swallowed.

"That's true."

"It's not an explanation."

Daniel stood near the window.

He hadn't spoken since Claire admitted she had paid for the forged agreement.

Now he turned toward his sister.

"Tell her."

Claire looked at him.

"You don't want to know."

Daniel's expression hardened.

"I already know enough to hate what you've done."

Claire's eyes filled with tears.

"You think I wanted this?"

Emily answered before Daniel could.

"Yes."

Claire looked at her.

Emily continued:

"You wanted something badly enough to help destroy my marriage."

Claire's lips trembled.

"What I wanted was a way out."

Emily sat down.

"Then tell me what you were promised."

Claire looked toward the hallway.

As if she expected someone to appear.

Nobody did.

Finally, she whispered:

"The inheritance."

Daniel frowned.

"What inheritance?"

Claire looked at him.

"Grandfather's."

Daniel went still.

"Our grandfather died twenty years ago."

"Yes."

"And he left everything to Dad."

"No."

Claire shook her head.

"That's what everyone was told."

Emily's attention sharpened.

"Then who inherited it?"

Claire looked at Emily.

"You."

Silence.

Emily stared.

"Me?"

Claire nodded.

"Not directly."

She pulled a folded document from her purse.

"Your father and our grandfather had an agreement."

Emily opened it.

Her eyes moved across the page.

Then stopped.

The document stated that a separate estate worth hundreds of millions had been placed into a restricted trust.

The beneficiary was not Emily's father.

Not Daniel.

Not Robert.

Emily.

But there was a condition.

She couldn't access it until she fulfilled a specific requirement.

Emily looked up.

"What condition?"

Claire hesitated.

"You had to be married."

Daniel stared at her.

"That's why?"

Claire nodded.

"But that's not all."

Emily's fingers tightened around the document.

"Keep going."

"The marriage had to last at least one year."

Daniel stepped forward.

"What?"

"One year."

Claire looked at him.

"If Emily divorced before the anniversary, the entire inheritance would be transferred to a charitable foundation."

Emily's expression changed.

"So you needed me to stay married."

Claire nodded.

"Yes."

"And Daniel was the person you chose."

Claire looked down.

"He was the only one Dad could control."

Daniel laughed bitterly.

"So that's what I was."

"A husband."

"No."

Claire looked at him.

"A key."

Emily stood.

"How much?"

Claire hesitated.

"Three hundred and eighty million dollars."

Daniel stared.

Emily slowly exhaled.

"And this inheritance is separate from the Black Trust?"

"Yes."

"Separate from my father's assets?"

"Yes."

"Then why did your family care so much?"

Claire gave a bitter smile.

"Because they were broke."

Daniel's face changed.

"What?"

Claire continued.

"The Whitmore family looks rich."

She laughed softly.

"We aren't."

Emily stared.

"Our properties are mortgaged."

"Our companies are carrying massive debt."

"Your father has been borrowing against everything."

Daniel whispered:

"How much?"

Claire looked at him.

"Seven hundred million."

Silence.

Daniel sat down.

"That's impossible."

"It's true."

"Why didn't I know?"

"Because Dad hid it."

Claire's voice broke.

"He needed your marriage to Emily because he intended to use the restricted inheritance to rescue the family."

Emily understood.

"So the marriage wasn't about controlling the Black Trust."

"No."

Claire shook her head.

"That came later."

"What was the original plan?"

Claire closed her eyes.

"Get you married."

"Keep you married for one year."

"Then convince you to use your inheritance to pay off the Whitmore debt."

Emily stared.

"You expected me to give you nearly four hundred million dollars."

Claire shook her head.

"Not give."

"Then what?"

"Invest."

Emily laughed.

"With no control?"

Claire said nothing.

That was answer enough.

Daniel looked at his sister.

"Did you know Dad was going to manipulate her?"

"Yes."

"Did you know he planned to change the prenup?"

Claire nodded.

"Yes."

"Did you know he intended to take control of the Black Trust?"

"Yes."

Daniel stood.

"Then why didn't you stop him?"

Claire's face crumpled.

"Because he threatened me."

"With what?"

"My own inheritance."

Daniel frowned.

"You have an inheritance?"

"Yes."

"How much?"

"Forty million."

Emily looked at her.

"And he could take it?"

Claire nodded.

"Everything was tied to the family holding company."

"If I disobeyed him, he would cut me out."

Daniel stared.

"So you sacrificed Emily to save yourself."

Claire whispered:

"Yes."

Emily walked toward the window.

The city lights flickered below.

She thought about the wedding.

The flowers.

The music.

The vows.

Daniel holding her hand.

Claire smiling beside her.

All of it had been built around a secret.

A secret worth hundreds of millions.

She turned.

"Why me?"

Claire looked confused.

"What?"

"Why did your grandfather choose me?"

Claire shook her head.

"He didn't."

Emily frowned.

"What?"

Claire looked at Daniel.

Then at Emily.

"Your grandfather didn't choose you."

"Then who did?"

"Your father."

Emily's heart stopped.

"My father?"

Claire nodded.

"He was the one who changed the inheritance."

"Why?"

"Because he wanted to protect you."

Emily's expression softened.

"What did he do?"

"He added a condition."

"Marriage?"

"Not just marriage."

Claire looked at her.

"Love."

Emily froze.

"What?"

"The inheritance only activates if the marriage is based on genuine mutual consent."

Daniel stared.

"What does that mean?"

Claire shook her head.

"I don't know exactly."

Emily looked at the document.

She read the final clause.

The beneficiary shall receive full control only if the marriage is entered into freely, without coercion, deception, or financial inducement, and remains a good-faith union for one year.

Emily's heart pounded.

She looked at Daniel.

"So the inheritance was designed to prevent exactly what you did."

Claire nodded.

"Yes."

Emily whispered:

"And you knew."

"Yes."

Daniel walked toward the table.

"Then why did you think this would work?"

Claire looked at him.

"Because Dad had a plan."

"What plan?"

"He intended to make Emily believe the marriage was genuine."

Daniel's face hardened.

"How?"

"By hiding the financial motive."

Claire looked at Emily.

"And by making you believe Daniel loved you."

Emily stared at her.

"Did he?"

Claire hesitated.

"I don't know."

Daniel looked at his sister.

"You don't get to answer that."

Claire lowered her eyes.

Emily looked at Daniel.

"Did you love me before the wedding?"

He didn't answer immediately.

Finally:

"I don't know."

Emily nodded.

"Thank you."

He looked surprised.

"For what?"

"For telling the truth."

Suddenly, the lights went out.

The house plunged into darkness.

Claire gasped.

Daniel immediately reached for his phone.

Emily stood still.

A second later, emergency lights came on.

Margaret rushed into the room.

"Everyone stay here."

Emily frowned.

"What's happening?"

"Security breach."

Daniel looked at his phone.

"Someone has accessed the house system."

Margaret looked at Emily.

"They're searching for the Black Trust documents."

Emily's expression hardened.

"Robert."

"No."

Margaret shook her head.

"This is bigger."

Daniel looked at her.

"What do you mean?"

"Robert doesn't have access to the external security network."

"Then who does?"

Margaret looked at Claire.

Claire went pale.

"Don't look at me."

Emily stared at her.

"You knew someone else was involved."

Claire shook her head.

"I swear."

"Claire."

"I swear!"

Then a voice came from the hallway.

"She's telling the truth."

Everyone froze.

A man stepped into the emergency light.

Robert.

Daniel's father.

He was holding a gun.

Daniel moved in front of Emily.

"Put it down."

Robert laughed.

"Still playing the hero?"

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"You're done."

"No."

Robert looked at Emily.

"She's done."

Emily didn't move.

Robert pointed the weapon toward her.

"Give me the Black Trust documents."

Emily smiled.

"You came all this way for papers?"

Robert's expression hardened.

"You don't understand what happens if I don't get them."

"I understand."

"You'll destroy this family."

Emily shook her head.

"You destroyed it."

Robert looked at Claire.

"You told her."

Claire stepped backward.

"Father—"

"You were supposed to keep your mouth shut."

Daniel stared at his father.

"You threatened her?"

Robert ignored him.

Emily stepped forward.

"You're afraid."

Robert's eyes narrowed.

"Of what?"

"Of losing everything."

He laughed.

"You think money is the problem?"

Emily paused.

"What else is there?"

Robert's face changed.

"Your father left you a secret."

Emily felt cold.

"What secret?"

Robert smiled.

"Ask your mother."

"My mother is dead."

"No."

Silence.

Robert looked at her.

"Your mother is alive."

Emily's heart stopped.

Daniel looked at Robert.

"What are you talking about?"

Robert lowered the gun slightly.

"Your father didn't die protecting your inheritance."

He smiled.

"He died because he found out who your mother really was."

Emily could barely breathe.

"Who is she?"

Robert's smile disappeared.

"The woman who built the Black Trust."

Then a gunshot echoed from somewhere outside.

Everyone froze.

Robert looked toward the window.

His face changed.

Emily realized something.

He hadn't come alone.

And whoever was outside wasn't there to protect Robert.

They were there to silence him.

Robert looked at Emily.

For the first time, genuine fear appeared in his eyes.

"Get down!"

The window shattered.

Daniel pulled Emily to the floor.

Claire screamed.

Margaret ducked behind the table.

Another shot tore through the wall.

Robert dropped his weapon.

Then shouted:

"They're here for all of us!"

Emily looked at him.

"Who?"

Robert stared at her.

"The people who funded your father's death."

Outside, several vehicles screeched to a stop.

Emily's phone vibrated.

One message appeared.

YOU WERE NEVER THE TARGET.

Another arrived.

THE TRUST WAS.

Then a final message.

AND NOW THEY KNOW YOU HAVE IT.

Emily looked at Daniel.

He looked terrified.

But not for himself.

For her.

She reached for his hand.

Not because she trusted him completely.

Not yet.

But because, for the first time, they were standing on the same side.

The side that had just discovered the truth.

And somewhere outside the house, the people who had spent years manipulating their families were coming for them.

Emily squeezed Daniel's hand.

"Stay with me."

He looked at her.

"I will."

Robert stared at them.

And whispered:

"Then God help you both."

Because the secret Claire had just confessed was only the beginning.

The money had never been the real prize.

The marriage had never been the real plan.

And the person who had created the inheritance condition had known something none of them understood yet.

Emily's father hadn't created the trust merely to protect his daughter's fortune.

He had created it to hide something.

May you like

Something worth killing for.

TO BE CONTINUED.
