CHAPTER 8 — The Family Turns on Daniel

CHAPTER 8 — The Family Turns on Daniel

Daniel knew something was wrong the moment his father stopped calling him by his name.

He had always been "Daniel" when Robert wanted something.

"Son" when he wanted obedience.

"Boy" when he was angry.

But that morning, sitting at the end of the long dining table, Robert didn't use any of those words.

He simply said:

"You've become a liability."

Daniel looked across the table.

Claire sat beside their father.

She wouldn't look at him.

Robert placed a stack of documents on the table.

"The banks have frozen three of our operating accounts."

Daniel frowned.

"Why?"

Robert's eyes were cold.

"Because of your wife."

Daniel stood.

"Don't blame Emily."

Robert laughed.

"Of course you'd say that."

"The accounts were frozen because you used assets you didn't own as collateral."

"Because I was trying to save this family."

"You were stealing."

Robert's expression hardened.

"You should be careful."

Daniel stared at him.

"Or what?"

Robert leaned back.

"Or you'll discover exactly how replaceable you are."

Daniel looked at Claire.

She remained silent.

He understood.

They had already decided.

He was going to be the sacrifice.

By noon, the first accusation appeared online.

WHITMORE HEIR ACCUSED OF FINANCIAL FRAUD

Daniel's photograph appeared beneath the headline.

His name.

His companies.

His marriage.

His supposed involvement in the Carter Trust.

Everything.

Except the truth.

Emily read the article in silence.

Daniel stood across from her.

"My father did this."

"I know."

"They're blaming me."

"I know."

Claire's name wasn't mentioned.

Robert's wasn't mentioned.

Victor's wasn't mentioned.

Only Daniel.

Emily looked at him.

"Your family is sacrificing you."

Daniel nodded.

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because I'm the easiest one to blame."

Emily placed her phone down.

"Are you?"

Daniel looked at her.

"No."

He took a breath.

"I'm not innocent."

Emily said nothing.

"I knew they wanted your money."

"Yes."

"I helped them arrange the marriage."

"Yes."

"I lied to you."

"Yes."

He looked at her.

"But I didn't steal from you."

Emily studied his face.

"I believe you."

Daniel looked surprised.

"Why?"

"Because the evidence proves it."

She pushed a folder toward him.

"The accounts they used were controlled by your father."

Daniel opened it.

Then froze.

"What's this?"

"Your name was added after the transactions."

He looked at the dates.

"I wasn't even in the country."

"I know."

"So they fabricated the records."

"Yes."

Daniel stared at the evidence.

"Then Claire knows."

Emily nodded.

"She does."

That evening, Claire called.

Emily answered.

"Hello."

Claire's voice trembled.

"I need to talk to you."

"About what?"

"Daniel."

Emily looked across the room.

He was standing near the window.

"He's here."

"Then don't tell him."

Emily frowned.

"Why?"

"Because if he knows, he'll try to stop me."

"Stop you from what?"

Claire took a breath.

"I'm going to testify."

Emily went still.

"Against your family?"

"Yes."

"Against Daniel?"

Claire hesitated.

"Yes."

Daniel turned.

Emily put the call on speaker.

Claire's voice filled the room.

"I don't have a choice."

Daniel stared at the phone.

"You always have a choice."

Claire began crying.

"Not anymore."

"Claire."

"Dad has everything."

"He has nothing."

"He has my accounts."

"He has your inheritance."

"He has evidence against me."

Daniel's expression hardened.

"What evidence?"

Claire was silent.

Then she whispered:

"The forged prenup."

Emily's eyes narrowed.

"You signed it."

"Yes."

"You paid for it."

"Yes."

"You instructed the lawyer."

Claire cried harder.

"Yes."

Daniel stared at the phone.

"Then tell the truth."

"I will."

"All of it."

"I can't."

"Why?"

Claire's voice broke.

"Because if I tell them everything, they'll arrest me."

Daniel closed his eyes.

"So you're going to blame me."

Claire didn't answer.

He nodded slowly.

"I understand."

"Daniel..."

"No."

His voice was quiet.

"Don't apologize."

The call ended.

The next morning, Claire appeared before investigators.

Her statement was devastating.

She admitted that Daniel had known about the marriage plan.

She said he had participated in discussions about the trust.

She said he had approved the prenup strategy.

She said he had been aware of the financial transfers.

But she left out one important detail.

She had forged his signature.

She had made the payments.

She had coordinated with Robert.

She had received millions in exchange.

Instead, she described herself as a reluctant participant.

And Daniel as the mastermind.

Emily watched the interview.

Her attorney turned off the television.

"This is bad."

Emily nodded.

"Yes."

"She has credibility."

"Not for long."

The attorney looked at her.

"How do you know?"

Emily opened a file.

"Because Claire forgot about the cameras."

The security footage showed Claire meeting Robert.

It showed her receiving money.

It showed her discussing the forged prenup.

It showed her telling the lawyer exactly what to change.

And it showed her telling Daniel:

"Once Emily signs, everything will be ours."

Emily looked at her attorney.

"That's enough."

He nodded.

"More than enough."

But Emily didn't release it immediately.

She waited.

Her attorney frowned.

"Why?"

"Because I want to know what they're hiding."

"What?"

"The reason Claire is so terrified."

That answer arrived unexpectedly.

At midnight.

Daniel received a message from an unknown number.

COME ALONE.

Below it was an address.

He showed Emily.

"Don't go."

"I have to."

"Why?"

"Because whoever sent this knows something."

Emily stared at the message.

"Then we're going together."

The address led to an underground parking garage.

Empty.

Cold.

Daniel stepped out of the car.

Emily followed.

A woman emerged from the shadows.

Claire.

Daniel stared.

"You said you were testifying."

"I did."

"Against me."

Claire lowered her eyes.

"I had to."

"No."

Daniel stepped closer.

"You chose to."

Claire started crying.

"You don't understand."

"Then explain."

She looked at Emily.

"Victor has my daughter."

Emily froze.

Daniel stared.

"Claire doesn't have a daughter."

Claire shook her head.

"Not anymore."

Silence.

Emily's expression changed.

"Tell us."

Claire wiped her tears.

"Seven years ago, I had a baby."

Daniel stared.

"You never told me."

"Dad made me give her up."

Emily felt a chill.

"Why?"

"Because he said she was a weakness."

Claire's voice broke.

"She was adopted by another family."

Daniel whispered:

"Where is she now?"

Claire looked at him.

"Victor knows."

Emily understood.

"They're using your daughter against you."

Claire nodded.

"That's why I betrayed you."

Daniel looked devastated.

"You should have told me."

"I was afraid."

"You could have trusted me."

Claire laughed bitterly.

"I didn't trust anyone."

Emily stepped forward.

"Where is your daughter?"

Claire gave her a piece of paper.

"A school."

Emily read the address.

"Victor is watching her."

"Yes."

"Then we protect her."

Claire stared.

"Why?"

Emily looked at Daniel.

Then back at Claire.

"Because whatever you did to me, your daughter didn't choose it."

Claire began crying.

"You'd help me?"

Emily nodded.

"But after she's safe, you tell the truth."

Claire nodded.

"I will."

The following morning, the financial markets reacted.

Three Whitmore companies collapsed.

Banks demanded repayment.

Creditors filed lawsuits.

Employees began resigning.

Investors turned against Robert.

And the family's carefully constructed image shattered.

Robert called Daniel.

"You did this."

Daniel answered calmly.

"No."

"You brought Emily into this family."

"You planned the marriage."

"You destroyed us."

"No."

Daniel looked at Emily.

"You destroyed yourself."

Robert's voice became furious.

"You are my son!"

Daniel closed his eyes.

"I was."

Robert paused.

"What does that mean?"

"It means I'm done."

Daniel ended the call.

That afternoon, Claire appeared again.

This time, she walked into the investigation office carrying boxes.

Inside were bank statements.

Emails.

Contracts.

Encrypted messages.

Photographs.

Recordings.

She placed everything on the table.

"I want to tell the truth."

The investigator looked at her.

"All of it?"

Claire nodded.

"All of it."

She began.

"Daniel didn't create the plan."

She swallowed.

"Robert did."

Then she named Victor Hale.

She named the lawyer.

She named the shell companies.

She named every person involved.

And finally, she said:

"I helped them."

Her voice broke.

"But Daniel did not."

The statement changed everything.

Within hours, prosecutors issued new subpoenas.

Robert's companies were raided.

The lawyer's office was searched.

Victor Hale's corporate headquarters were placed under investigation.

Daniel's name was removed from the first financial fraud complaint.

But the damage to his family was permanent.

That evening, Daniel found Claire sitting alone outside the house.

He stopped.

She looked up.

"I'm sorry."

Daniel sat beside her.

"I know."

"I betrayed you."

"Yes."

"I blamed you."

"Yes."

"I was scared."

"I know."

Claire looked at him.

"Do you hate me?"

Daniel thought about it.

"No."

She began crying.

"Why?"

"Because if I hated you, I'd still be tied to you."

Claire nodded.

"I don't deserve your forgiveness."

"Maybe not."

He stood.

"But you deserve a chance to become someone better."

Claire looked at him.

"Will you ever trust me again?"

Daniel shook his head.

"No."

The answer hurt.

"But I won't stop you from earning it."

Emily watched from the window.

Her attorney stood beside her.

"Do you think Daniel is innocent?"

Emily looked at her husband.

"No."

The attorney frowned.

"But you defended him."

"He's guilty of something."

"What?"

Emily's voice was quiet.

"Being afraid."

She looked toward Daniel.

"He let his family manipulate him."

"And now?"

"Now he's choosing."

That night, Emily entered her father's private archive.

A new file had appeared.

FAMILY COLLAPSE — CONTINGENCY 8

She opened it.

Her father's recorded voice began.

"If you're seeing this, the Whitmore family has turned against itself."

Emily froze.

Her father continued:

"That means the pressure has worked."

She frowned.

"Pressure?"

"The family will always sacrifice its weakest member first."

A pause.

"But the moment they begin blaming one another, the real architect becomes vulnerable."

Emily's eyes narrowed.

Victor.

Her father continued:

"Do not mistake Robert for the mastermind."

Emily stared at the screen.

"Robert is only a gatekeeper."

Her father paused.

"The man behind this marriage is someone I once trusted."

Emily's heart began pounding.

Someone he trusted.

Someone close enough to know everything.

Someone powerful enough to finance the entire plan.

Then her father said the name.

"Martin Cross."

Emily froze.

Martin.

Her father's former chief financial officer.

The man who had appeared only days earlier.

The man who had claimed to know everything.

The man who had helped her find the Hale file.

Emily whispered:

"No."

Her phone rang.

Martin.

She answered.

"Emily."

She said nothing.

His voice was calm.

"You're beginning to understand."

Emily's blood ran cold.

"You knew."

"Yes."

"You worked for Victor."

A pause.

Then:

"Victor worked for me."

Emily stopped breathing.

"What?"

Martin laughed softly.

"You've been looking at the wrong man."

The call ended.

Emily stared at the phone.

Across the room, Daniel entered.

"What happened?"

Emily looked at him.

"The person we thought was helping us..."

She swallowed.

"...may have been the person controlling everything."

Daniel's face changed.

"Who?"

Emily turned toward the screen.

"Martin Cross."

Daniel stared.

"The man who worked for your father?"

Emily nodded.

And suddenly the entire conspiracy looked different.

Because Victor Hale had money.

Robert had desperation.

Claire had fear.

Daniel had guilt.

But Martin Cross had something none of them possessed.

He had known Emily's father before anyone else.

He had known the Carter empire from the inside.

He had known the Black Trust existed.

And he had been close enough to Emily's family to know exactly where every weakness was buried.

Emily closed the archive.

"Tomorrow, we find out what Martin really wanted."

Daniel looked at her.

"And if he's the one behind all of this?"

Emily's expression hardened.

May you like

"Then tomorrow, he stops hiding."

TO BE CONTINUED.
