CHAPTER 11 — THE LAWYER WHO OWNED EVERY SECRET

CHAPTER 11 — THE LAWYER WHO OWNED EVERY SECRET

By eight in the morning, Ethan had learned three things.

The Blackwood laboratory was gone.

Richard Blackwood was missing.

And Daniel Vale was still alive.

The third fact should have comforted him.

It didn't.

Daniel lay in a private hospital room beneath armed security, a bullet wound in his chest and a lifetime of secrets behind his eyes.

Ethan stood outside the glass.

He hadn't spoken to him since the cemetery.

He wasn't sure he could.

Then his phone rang.

The caller ID showed a name he had almost forgotten.

Daniel Vale — Office.

Ethan stared at the screen.

Daniel's office had been closed for years.

He answered.

A woman's voice spoke.

“Mr. Blackwood?”

“Yes.”

“My name is Clara Morgan.”

“Who are you?”

“I was your father's legal secretary.”

Ethan's eyes narrowed.

“My father is in the hospital.”

“I don't mean Daniel.”

Silence.

“I mean Richard.”

Ethan's grip tightened around the phone.

“What do you want?”

“I need to meet you.”

“Why?”

“Because I have something Richard spent twenty years trying to find.”

“What?”

Clara hesitated.

“The original Blackwood trust.”

Ethan's heart stopped.

“Where?”

“In your father's law office.”

“That office was destroyed fifteen years ago.”

“No.”

Her voice dropped.

“It was never destroyed.”

THE LAW OFFICE THAT NEVER BURNED

The building stood in the oldest financial district of the city.

Ethan had passed it hundreds of times.

He had never noticed the name.

The brass letters had been removed from the entrance years ago.

But when Clara opened the door, Ethan recognized the interior immediately.

Dark wood.

Green marble.

Old leather chairs.

A portrait of Richard Blackwood above the fireplace.

Ethan stopped.

“This place shouldn't exist.”

Clara smiled sadly.

“That's why Richard loved it.”

Alexander entered behind him.

His hand rested near his weapon.

“Who else is here?”

“No one.”

Clara was in her sixties.

Gray hair.

Simple black suit.

No jewelry.

She looked more like a retired librarian than someone who had guarded the Blackwood family's secrets for decades.

Ethan didn't trust her.

“Where is the trust?”

“Not here.”

“Then why bring me here?”

“Because this is where your father hid the key.”

“My father?”

“Daniel.”

Ethan stared.

Clara walked toward the fireplace.

She removed a painting.

Behind it was a small safe.

She entered six numbers.

The lock opened.

Inside was a single envelope.

Black.

Sealed with red wax.

On the front were four words:

FOR ETHAN ONLY.

Ethan didn't touch it.

“Who gave you this?”

“Daniel.”

“When?”

“Twenty years ago.”

“Why didn't you give it to me?”

“Because he told me not to.”

“Why now?”

Clara looked toward the window.

“Because he knew he was going to die.”

Ethan's expression hardened.

“Daniel knew?”

“Yes.”

“He knew Richard would shoot him?”

“No.”

Clara looked at him.

“He knew one day you would discover the truth.”

THE LAWYER WHO KNEW TOO MUCH

Ethan opened the envelope.

Inside was a legal document.

Not a letter.

Not an explanation.

A trust agreement.

The first page carried a date.

March 14, 1986.

The second page contained a list of assets.

Hotels.

Hospitals.

Land.

Investment companies.

Banks.

Shipping companies.

Private foundations.

Ethan stared.

“This is everything.”

Clara nodded.

“No.”

She turned the page.

“This is only what Richard allowed you to see.”

Ethan looked closer.

At the bottom was a clause.

CONTROL SHALL REMAIN WITH THE VALE-BLACKWOOD BLOODLINE UNTIL THE FINAL BENEFICIARY REACHES THE AGE OF FORTY.

Ethan's heart pounded.

“Final beneficiary?”

Clara nodded.

“You.”

“But Richard controlled everything.”

“Richard controlled the companies.”

“Then who owned them?”

Clara looked at him.

“You did.”

Ethan stared.

“Since birth.”

THE EMPIRE WAS NEVER RICHARD'S

For decades, Richard had built his reputation as a billionaire.

The press called him a visionary.

A ruthless businessman.

A self-made titan.

But the truth was different.

Richard had never owned the Blackwood empire.

He had been its administrator.

A trustee.

A guardian.

The real ownership had remained hidden.

First with Margaret.

Then Daniel.

Then Ethan.

The entire empire had been structured so that Richard could manage it but never permanently possess it.

“Why?” Ethan asked.

Clara answered:

“Because your grandfather didn't trust Richard.”

“Why?”

“Because he knew Richard would eventually become dangerous.”

Ethan looked at the document.

“And the age of forty?”

“That was the activation point.”

Ethan's face changed.

He was forty.

The trust had activated.

That was why Richard had accelerated everything.

The fire.

The experiments.

The attempt to obtain Lily and Emma.

Richard had known that if Ethan reached forty with his family intact, control would leave Richard forever.

Ethan looked at Alexander.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

Alexander shook his head.

“I didn't know.”

Clara looked at him.

“Your brother knew part of it.”

Alexander stared.

“What?”

“You knew the trust existed.”

“I knew there was a trust.”

“You didn't know Ethan was the beneficiary.”

Alexander's face hardened.

“No.”

Clara nodded.

“Richard made sure you never knew.”

THE SECRET CLAUSE

Ethan turned another page.

Then stopped.

A paragraph had been highlighted.

His eyes moved slowly across the words.

In the event of attempted assassination, fraudulent transfer, forced medical experimentation, unlawful confinement, or intentional concealment of a surviving heir, all controlling authority shall immediately transfer to the protected beneficiary.

Ethan looked up.

“Richard triggered this.”

“Yes.”

“Several times.”

“Yes.”

“So why didn't the trust activate earlier?”

Clara's expression became serious.

“Because one condition wasn't met.”

“What?”

“The beneficiary had to know.”

Ethan frowned.

“Know what?”

“Know the truth.”

Ethan stared at the document.

“The trust required me to know who I was.”

“Yes.”

“And now I do.”

“Yes.”

He suddenly understood.

Richard had spent forty years hiding the truth because knowledge itself was the key.

The moment Ethan learned that Richard wasn't his father—

the trust could activate.

The moment Ethan learned about the hidden ownership—

the trust could activate.

The moment he learned about Lily and Emma—

the trust could activate.

Richard wasn't trying to kill Ethan simply because he hated him.

He was trying to prevent Ethan from learning who he was.

Clara whispered:

“Your ignorance was the foundation of his power.”

THE LAWYER'S SECOND FILE

Clara opened another drawer.

This one contained dozens of folders.

Each had a name.

MARGARET.

DANIEL.

ALEXANDER.

GABRIEL.

AMELIA.

ETHAN.

LILY.

EMMA.

Ethan stared.

“You kept files on my entire family.”

“I was instructed to.”

“By whom?”

Clara looked at him.

“Your grandmother.”

Ethan's eyes narrowed.

“Margaret?”

“No.”

“My grandmother is Margaret.”

“Not your maternal grandmother.”

Clara placed another file on the desk.

ELIZABETH VALE.

Ethan froze.

The woman he had seen on the old monitor.

His mother's twin.

The woman everyone thought was dead.

“She was alive?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

Clara's face changed.

“She died last year.”

Ethan stared.

“How?”

“Assassination.”

“By Richard?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

Clara didn't answer.

She opened the file.

Inside was a photograph.

Elizabeth standing beside a young boy.

Ethan recognized the boy immediately.

Gabriel.

But the photograph was dated—

2004.

Gabriel should have been presumed dead.

He was alive.

And he was smiling.

Beside him stood Elizabeth.

On the back was a handwritten message:

HE KNOWS WHAT RICHARD DOESN'T.

Ethan looked at Clara.

“What did Gabriel know?”

Clara whispered:

“Richard isn't the real architect.”

THE NAME BEHIND THE EMPIRE

Ethan's phone vibrated.

A message.

Unknown number.

YOU'RE LOOKING IN THE WRONG PLACE.

Another message arrived.

THE LAWYER KNOWS.

Ethan looked at Clara.

She had gone pale.

“Who is texting me?”

“I don't know.”

“You do.”

Clara shook her head.

“Not anymore.”

Ethan placed the phone on the desk.

“Tell me the truth.”

“I am.”

“No.”

He stepped closer.

“You've protected these secrets for decades.”

“I did.”

“You knew my daughter was alive.”

“I suspected.”

“You knew Amelia was a subject.”

“Yes.”

“You knew Daniel was my father.”

“Yes.”

“You knew Richard wasn't dead.”

Clara looked away.

“Yes.”

“And now you're telling me Richard wasn't the architect.”

“Yes.”

“Then who was?”

Clara's silence lasted too long.

Ethan's voice became cold.

“Who?”

She finally whispered:

“Your grandfather.”

Ethan stared.

“My grandfather died thirty years ago.”

“No.”

Clara opened another file.

“He disappeared.”

“Where?”

“Europe.”

“Why?”

“To escape Richard.”

Ethan's face hardened.

“Richard was afraid of him?”

Clara nodded.

“Very.”

THE MAN ABOVE RICHARD

The file contained financial records.

Secret transfers.

Offshore accounts.

Political donations.

Medical patents.

Everything connected to one name.

SAMUEL BLACKWOOD.

Ethan's great-grandfather.

The man who had supposedly died peacefully at ninety.

But the records told another story.

He had created the original genetic research.

He had funded the first experiments.

He had established the secret laboratories.

Richard hadn't created the system.

He inherited it.

Then improved it.

Ethan felt sick.

“So Richard wasn't the beginning.”

“No.”

“Samuel was.”

“Yes.”

“And what did Richard do?”

Clara looked at him.

“He tried to destroy Samuel's system.”

Ethan frowned.

“That doesn't make sense.”

“It does.”

She opened another document.

“Richard wanted the cure.”

“Samuel wanted control.”

“Richard wanted immortality.”

“Samuel wanted power.”

“And Daniel?”

“Daniel wanted freedom.”

“Margaret?”

“Her children.”

“And Amelia?”

Clara paused.

“She wanted Ethan.”

Ethan stared.

“Then why did she betray me?”

Clara's expression softened.

“She didn't.”

“What?”

“She was protecting you.”

THE SECRET AMELIA NEVER TOLD

Clara handed Ethan another file.

Inside was a letter.

Written by Amelia.

Ethan,

If you're reading this, then I'm either dead or Richard has finally lost control.

Ethan stopped breathing.

He continued.

I never married you because I was ordered to.

I married you because I loved you.

I knew who you were before we met.

I knew what Richard had done.

I knew about Lily.

And I knew that if I stayed away from you, you would eventually become his next victim.

Ethan's eyes filled with tears.

The letter continued.

I lied because every truth around you was poisoned.

I wanted to tell you everything.

But every time I tried, someone disappeared.

Your brother.

Your mother.

My sister.

Our daughter.

I realized the only way to protect you was to become the person Richard believed he could control.

Ethan lowered the letter.

“She loved me.”

Clara nodded.

“Yes.”

Alexander looked away.

Ethan continued reading.

There is one thing I never told you.

Lily was not the only child I gave birth to.

Ethan froze.

His hands began shaking.

The next sentence blurred.

He read it again.

Emma was born before Lily.

He looked at Clara.

“That isn't possible.”

“It is.”

“Emma is younger.”

“Yes.”

“Then why?”

Clara took a breath.

“Because Emma wasn't born normally.”

Ethan stared.

“She was created.”

THE CHILD WHO WASN'T SUPPOSED TO EXIST

Emma had been conceived through the Blackwood genetic program.

Richard had used Amelia's cells.

Ethan's genetic material.

And Alexander's stabilizing mutation.

But the experiment failed.

Emma was supposed to die.

Instead, she survived.

Richard hid her existence.

Amelia discovered the truth.

And she stole the baby.

That was the real reason for the first hospital fire.

Not Lily.

Not Amelia.

Emma.

Ethan stared at the file.

“Then Lily…”

“Was conceived naturally.”

“And Emma?”

“Was created by the laboratory.”

Ethan felt sick.

He looked toward Alexander.

“My daughter is part of the experiment.”

Alexander nodded.

“But she's still your daughter.”

Ethan closed his eyes.

That was all that mattered.

THE LAWYER'S FINAL SECRET

Clara stood.

“There is one more thing.”

Ethan looked at her.

“What?”

“The trust isn't complete.”

“What do you mean?”

“The document you have is only the first layer.”

“There are more?”

“Yes.”

“How many?”

“Three.”

“Where?”

Clara pointed toward the floor.

“Beneath this building.”

Ethan stared.

“Another laboratory?”

“No.”

“A vault?”

“No.”

“Then what?”

Clara's voice became almost a whisper.

“A courtroom.”

Ethan frowned.

“What?”

“Your grandfather built a private courtroom underground.”

“Why?”

“To judge the Blackwood family.”

Ethan stared.

“Judge them?”

“Yes.”

“For what?”

“Everything.”

THE COURTROOM

The elevator descended.

Ten floors.

Fifteen.

Twenty.

The doors opened into a massive underground chamber.

At the center stood a wooden judge's bench.

Behind it hung the Blackwood crest.

But beneath the crest were three words:

TRUTH. BLOOD. CONSEQUENCE.

Ethan stepped inside.

Alexander followed.

Clara remained behind.

“Why did Samuel build this?”

Clara answered:

“He believed one day the family would destroy itself.”

Ethan looked around.

“He was right.”

A screen activated.

Samuel Blackwood appeared.

Old.

Weak.

But alive.

Ethan froze.

“This is a recording.”

“Yes.”

Samuel looked directly into the camera.

“If you are watching this, Ethan, then the trust has been activated.”

Ethan stared.

Samuel continued.

“I know what Richard has done.”

“I know what Daniel has hidden.”

“I know what Margaret sacrificed.”

“And I know what you will eventually discover about Amelia.”

Ethan's heart raced.

Samuel leaned toward the camera.

“But there is one final truth.”

The screen flickered.

“Richard is not your greatest enemy.”

Ethan's face tightened.

Samuel continued:

“The person who controls the Blackwood empire today is not Richard.”

The room went silent.

“Not Daniel.”

“Not Margaret.”

“Not even you.”

Ethan looked at Alexander.

Samuel's final words echoed through the courtroom.

“The true owner is the person who was born without a name.”

The screen went black.

A door opened behind Ethan.

A young woman stepped into the courtroom.

She looked at him.

Then at Alexander.

Then smiled.

“Hello, brothers.”

Ethan froze.

Alexander's face went completely white.

The woman lifted her hand.

A familiar crescent-shaped birthmark appeared beneath her sleeve.

Ethan whispered:

“Who are you?”

She smiled.

“My name is Sofia.”

A pause.

“And I'm your sister.”

Behind her, the courtroom doors slammed shut.

Every light turned red.

May you like

And the final screen illuminated with a single sentence:

THE LAST HEIR HAS ARRIVED.
