CHAPTER 3 — THE SECRET IN LILY'S BLOOD

CHAPTER 3 — THE SECRET IN LILY'S BLOOD

The bedroom was empty.

For three seconds, Ethan couldn't move.

The yellow pajamas lay crumpled on the floor.

The window was open.

The curtains moved gently in the cold night air.

And on the bed sat a single black rose.

Ethan stared at it.

“No.”

He crossed the room in two strides.

“Lily!”

Nothing.

He looked beneath the bed.

The closet.

The bathroom.

Nothing.

“LILY!”

Amelia rushed into the room behind him.

The moment she saw the empty bed, she collapsed against the doorframe.

“No…”

Ethan grabbed the security radio.

“Lock down the property!”

Marcus answered immediately.

“We already have!”

“Search every room!”

“Already doing it.”

“Check the underground garage. The east road. The servants' entrance. Every camera.”

“Sir, we're—”

Ethan ripped the radio from his ear.

He didn't want explanations.

He wanted his daughter.

He looked at the open window.

Seven years ago, he had lost his family because he had trusted other people.

He would not make that mistake again.

Then he noticed something.

A tiny smear of blood on the windowsill.

His heart stopped.

“Amelia.”

She stepped closer.

“What?”

Ethan pointed.

She covered her mouth.

“That's Lily's?”

“I don't know.”

Marcus entered.

“We found footprints.”

“Where?”

“Outside the window.”

Ethan followed him.

The footprints disappeared beneath the trees.

Then Marcus stopped.

“Sir.”

“What?”

“There are two sets.”

Ethan looked down.

One belonged to an adult.

The other was much smaller.

He frowned.

“Lily walked out?”

“No.”

Marcus pointed toward the grass.

“The child's footprints are facing the house.”

Ethan stared.

Lily hadn't walked away.

Someone had carried her.

And she had struggled.

THE BLACK ROSE

They found the first clue fifteen minutes later.

A torn piece of yellow fabric had caught on a branch.

Ethan recognized it immediately.

Lily's pajamas.

His hands clenched.

“She was taken alive.”

Marcus nodded.

“That means we still have time.”

Ethan looked toward the darkness beyond the trees.

“Find her.”

They searched until dawn.

Nothing.

No car.

No blood trail.

No abandoned clothing.

No footprints beyond the woods.

Whoever had taken Lily had planned the escape carefully.

Then Daniel called.

Ethan almost ignored him.

He didn't trust his attorney anymore.

But Daniel's name appeared again.

And again.

Finally, Ethan answered.

“Where is my daughter?”

Daniel sounded breathless.

“I don't know.”

“Then why are you calling?”

“Because I know what the black rose means.”

Ethan went still.

“What?”

“It was used by your grandfather.”

“Explain.”

“Whenever a Blackwood heir was considered a threat, he sent a black rose.”

Ethan's eyes hardened.

“Then Alexander sent it.”

“No.”

Daniel hesitated.

“Alexander doesn't use black roses.”

“Who does?”

Silence.

“Daniel.”

“The black rose belonged to Richard.”

Ethan's blood ran cold.

“My father?”

“Yes.”

“But Richard is dead.”

Daniel whispered:

“Maybe that's what he wanted everyone to believe.”

THE SECRET LABORATORY

Three hours later, Ethan was standing inside an abandoned Blackwood laboratory.

Daniel had given him the location.

The building was hidden beneath an old pharmaceutical warehouse.

Inside were dozens of medical files.

Blood samples.

DNA reports.

Photographs.

And names.

Hundreds of names.

All connected to the Blackwood family.

Ethan walked between the shelves.

“What was this place?”

Daniel answered:

“Your father called it a genetic research center.”

“For what?”

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“Bloodlines.”

Ethan stopped.

“Why?”

“Because Richard believed certain genetic traits could determine who was capable of managing the Blackwood trust.”

“That sounds insane.”

“It was.”

Ethan opened a file.

Inside was his own name.

ETHAN BLACKWOOD

GENETIC PROFILE: INCOMPLETE

Beneath it was another name.

LILY BLACKWOOD

Ethan's breathing stopped.

He opened the file.

There were pages of medical data.

Blood tests.

Chromosome analysis.

Neurological scans.

And one sentence circled in red:

THE CHILD CARRIES THE MARKER.

Ethan looked at Daniel.

“What marker?”

“I don't know.”

“You're a lawyer.”

“Not a geneticist.”

“Then find one.”

Daniel nodded.

Ethan continued reading.

The next page contained a photograph of Lily as a baby.

Ethan stared.

He had never seen it.

Lily was wrapped in a white blanket.

Her eyes were closed.

On her left shoulder was the crescent-shaped birthmark Ethan had noticed.

Beneath the photograph:

SUBJECT L-01

Ethan's face hardened.

“They experimented on her.”

Daniel shook his head.

“Not exactly.”

“Then what?”

“They were monitoring her.”

“Without my knowledge.”

“Yes.”

“Without Amelia's knowledge.”

“Yes.”

Ethan slammed the file onto the table.

“They stole my daughter and tested her.”

Daniel didn't answer.

Ethan opened another folder.

This one belonged to Amelia.

The first page contained her blood type.

The second contained genetic information.

The third contained a handwritten note:

MOTHER CARRIES THE KEY. CHILD CARRIES THE LOCK.

Ethan frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Daniel stared at the document.

“I don't know.”

Then a voice came from behind them.

“I do.”

They turned.

Amelia stood in the doorway.

AMELIA'S CONFESSION

Ethan stared at his wife.

“You knew about this place?”

Amelia nodded.

“Not everything.”

“You knew they tested Lily.”

“I knew they were watching her.”

“And you didn't tell me?”

“I was trying to keep her alive.”

Ethan's anger rose.

“You had seven years to tell me.”

“And you had seven years to die.”

He stopped.

Amelia stepped closer.

“Do you understand what Victor wanted?”

“Yes.”

“No.”

Her voice trembled.

“He didn't just want the company.”

She pointed to Lily's file.

“He wanted this.”

“The marker?”

“Yes.”

“What is it?”

Amelia took a breath.

“Your family has a hereditary condition.”

Ethan frowned.

“What condition?”

“It's neurological.”

“Samuel mentioned it.”

“You talked to Samuel?”

“He examined Lily.”

Amelia's expression changed.

“What did he tell you?”

“That she might have inherited it from my father.”

Amelia shook her head.

“He lied.”

Ethan froze.

“What?”

“Lily didn't inherit the condition.”

“Then what did she inherit?”

Amelia looked directly into his eyes.

“Resistance.”

“To what?”

“Certain neurological diseases.”

Ethan stared.

“Explain.”

“Your grandfather had a degenerative condition. Your father inherited it. Victor inherited it.”

“But I didn't.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because your mother carried a rare genetic variation.”

Ethan looked at the file.

“And Lily inherited it?”

Amelia nodded.

“Not only inherited.”

She touched the page.

“She has two copies.”

Silence.

“What does that mean?”

“It means Lily may be the first Blackwood in generations who cannot develop the disease.”

Ethan stared at the paper.

“So that's why they wanted her?”

“Yes.”

“But that's medical.”

Amelia's eyes darkened.

“Not entirely.”

She turned another page.

The document contained a list of pharmaceutical companies.

Several were owned by Blackwood Holdings.

Ethan slowly understood.

“They were developing a treatment.”

“Yes.”

“With Lily's blood.”

“Yes.”

“How much money?”

Amelia looked at him.

“Enough to make the family fortune look small.”

THE REAL INHERITANCE

Ethan sat down.

For the first time since Lily disappeared, his anger was replaced by something colder.

Understanding.

His family hadn't simply wanted Lily because she was an heir.

They wanted her because her blood could potentially save thousands of people.

But that wasn't the whole story.

There was another document.

Ethan opened it.

It was an old trust agreement.

His grandfather's signature appeared at the bottom.

The document contained a clause Ethan had never seen.

If a descendant demonstrates resistance to the hereditary Blackwood condition, ownership of the family research foundation shall transfer immediately to that descendant.

Ethan read it twice.

Then looked at Daniel.

“How much is the foundation worth?”

Daniel swallowed.

“Approximately forty-three billion dollars.”

Silence.

Ethan closed his eyes.

“That's why.”

Amelia nodded.

“Lily isn't just the heir to the company.”

“She owns the research foundation.”

“Eventually.”

“And Victor needs her.”

“Yes.”

“Alive.”

“Yes.”

“Then why take her?”

Amelia's expression became grim.

“Because someone else wants her dead.”

THE MAN WHO WANTED HER BLOOD

A monitor suddenly turned on.

A video appeared.

Victor Blackwood.

He sat in a dark room.

His face was bruised.

His tie was missing.

But he was smiling.

“Ethan.”

Ethan stepped toward the screen.

“Where is my daughter?”

Victor laughed.

“You finally understand.”

“What?”

“She's worth more alive than dead.”

Ethan's eyes narrowed.

“Who has her?”

Victor shook his head.

“That's the question you should be asking.”

“Tell me.”

“You're looking for the wrong enemy.”

Ethan's patience snapped.

“You have ten seconds.”

Victor smiled.

“Lily was never supposed to come to your house.”

“Who sent her there?”

“I did.”

Ethan froze.

“What?”

Victor leaned toward the camera.

“I wanted you to find her.”

Amelia's face went pale.

“Why?”

Victor's smile disappeared.

“Because I needed to know whether Ethan Blackwood still had a weakness.”

Ethan stared.

“You used my daughter as bait.”

“Yes.”

“And the poison?”

“A test.”

“For what?”

“To see if Lily would protect you.”

Ethan's blood turned cold.

Victor continued.

“She did.”

“Why?”

“Because she's your daughter.”

Ethan clenched his fists.

Victor's voice lowered.

“And now the people who have been searching for her for seven years know exactly where she is.”

The screen went black.

THE BLOOD TEST

Samuel arrived at the laboratory twenty minutes later.

Ethan immediately pointed a gun at him.

“Don't move.”

Samuel stopped.

Amelia stepped between them.

“Ethan.”

“He lied to us.”

“I know.”

Samuel looked at Lily's file.

“I never harmed her.”

“You tested her.”

“To protect her.”

“From whom?”

Samuel hesitated.

“Everyone.”

Ethan lowered the gun slightly.

“Explain.”

Samuel walked toward the table.

He placed a small vial on it.

“Three years ago, Victor ordered Lily's blood tested.”

Ethan's eyes narrowed.

“I thought Nora was hiding her.”

“She was.”

“But Victor found her.”

“Several times.”

Samuel opened another file.

“Every time, I altered the reports.”

“What reports?”

“Lily's genetic results.”

Ethan stared.

“You falsified them?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To make Victor believe Lily did not carry the marker.”

Ethan's anger faltered.

Samuel continued.

“I protected her.”

“Then why didn't you tell me?”

“Because Victor had people watching you.”

Samuel looked at Amelia.

“And because your wife was already being held.”

Ethan looked at Amelia.

She lowered her eyes.

Samuel whispered:

“We had one chance.”

“To do what?”

“Wait until Lily was old enough to survive the truth.”

Ethan's voice cracked.

“She was seven.”

“I know.”

“She was terrified.”

“I know.”

“And you still kept her hidden.”

Samuel nodded.

“Because every person who tried to expose the truth died.”

THE SECOND DNA TEST

Samuel took Lily's blood sample from the refrigerator.

“I ran another test last month.”

Ethan stared.

“Why?”

“Because I noticed something unusual.”

“What?”

“The genetic marker isn't the only thing she inherited.”

Samuel opened the report.

A second sequence had been highlighted.

Ethan read it.

Then stopped.

“What is this?”

Samuel looked at him.

“A genetic sequence found in Richard Blackwood.”

Ethan frowned.

“My father?”

“Yes.”

“But he had the hereditary disease.”

“He did.”

“Then how does Lily have his sequence without the disease?”

Samuel hesitated.

“Because she didn't just inherit his mutation.”

“What else?”

“Something that neutralizes it.”

Ethan stared.

“And that's worth billions.”

“More.”

Samuel lowered his voice.

“If the research succeeds, it could potentially treat the condition affecting your entire family.”

Amelia stepped closer.

“So Lily could save them.”

Samuel nodded.

“Or become the most valuable genetic subject in the world.”

Ethan looked horrified.

“She is not a subject.”

“No.”

Samuel's voice softened.

“She is a little girl.”

THE MESSAGE FROM LILY

Suddenly, Ethan's phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

He opened the message.

A photograph.

Lily sat in a chair.

Her yellow pajamas were dirty.

Her face was frightened.

But she was alive.

Ethan's heart jumped.

Beneath the photograph was a message:

SHE IS SAFE.

Another arrived.

FOR NOW.

Then:

BRING THE ORIGINAL TRUST.

Ethan stared.

Amelia grabbed his arm.

“Don't.”

“What choice do I have?”

“They'll kill you.”

“They have Lily.”

“They want the trust.”

“Then I'll give it to them.”

“No.”

Ethan looked at her.

“They don't understand something.”

“What?”

“They think money is what makes me dangerous.”

He picked up his coat.

“They're wrong.”

THE SECOND MESSAGE

Before Ethan could leave, another message arrived.

This time there was no photograph.

Only words.

DON'T COME ALONE.

Ethan frowned.

A second line appeared.

THE PERSON YOU TRUST MOST IS WORKING FOR US.

He looked around the room.

Marcus.

Daniel.

Samuel.

Amelia.

Every one of them was silent.

Then his phone vibrated again.

A final message.

ASK YOUR WIFE WHAT HAPPENED TO THE REAL LILY.

Ethan looked at Amelia.

Her face had gone completely white.

“Amelia?”

She didn't answer.

“What's the real Lily?”

Tears appeared in her eyes.

“Ethan…”

“What aren't you telling me?”

Amelia closed her eyes.

For several seconds, she said nothing.

Then she whispered:

“The child you buried…”

Ethan stopped breathing.

“Wasn't Lily.”

His entire body went cold.

“What?”

Amelia looked at him.

“The baby who died that night…”

She began crying.

“…was another child.”

Ethan stared at her in disbelief.

“Then who is my daughter?”

Amelia's voice broke.

“I don't know.”

Silence.

The room seemed to disappear.

Ethan looked at the DNA report.

At Lily's photograph.

At the hospital bracelet.

At the blood sample.

Everything he thought he knew was collapsing again.

Then Samuel suddenly grabbed the report.

His face changed.

“Wait.”

“What?”

Samuel looked at the genetic sequence.

“This isn't possible.”

“What?”

He turned the page toward Ethan.

“There is a second maternal marker.”

Ethan stared.

“What does that mean?”

Samuel's voice trembled.

“It means Lily is biologically related to Amelia…”

He stopped.

Then looked at Ethan.

“But not in the way we thought.”

Ethan's heart pounded.

“Explain.”

Samuel whispered:

“Lily has a genetic signature that suggests Amelia had another child.”

Amelia covered her mouth.

“No…”

Ethan stared at her.

“Another child?”

Amelia shook her head violently.

“I had one baby.”

Samuel looked at the report again.

“No.”

He pointed to the screen.

“You had two.”

Ethan couldn't speak.

The room fell silent.

Then, from the hallway, a phone began ringing.

Everyone turned.

The sound came from Lily's abandoned bedroom.

Ethan walked toward it.

He entered the room.

An old phone sat on the bed.

It was ringing.

He answered.

A child's voice whispered:

“Daddy?”

Ethan's heart stopped.

“Lily?”

“No.”

The voice trembled.

“My name is Emma.”

Ethan froze.

“Who are you?”

A pause.

Then the child whispered:

“I think I'm your daughter too.”

The call ended.

Ethan slowly lowered the phone.

Behind him, Amelia collapsed into a chair.

And for the first time, Ethan understood the terrifying truth.

The secret in Lily's blood wasn't simply about inheritance.

It was about a child who had never been counted.

A daughter who had disappeared before anyone knew she existed.

May you like

And somewhere in the darkness, someone had been keeping her alive.

Waiting for the day Ethan finally came looking.
