CHAPTER 13 — THE LAST CONFRONTATION

CHAPTER 13 — THE LAST CONFRONTATION

Ethan ran until his lungs burned.

“LILY!”

His voice echoed through the underground corridor.

Nothing.

Then—

a scream.

“Daddy!”

Ethan stopped.

Alexander nearly crashed into him.

“Where?”

“Left.”

They turned.

A steel door stood at the end of the passage.

Red light pulsed above it.

MEDICAL CONTAINMENT — AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY

Ethan grabbed the handle.

Locked.

Alexander raised his weapon.

“Move.”

The shot shattered the electronic lock.

Ethan kicked the door open.

The room beyond was empty.

A surgical table.

Three empty restraints.

A shattered vial.

And on the floor—

Lily's yellow hair ribbon.

Ethan's heart stopped.

“No.”

He dropped to his knees.

He picked it up.

It was warm.

“She was here.”

Alexander looked around.

“Recently.”

Ethan closed his fist around the ribbon.

Then he heard footsteps.

Slow.

Calm.

Someone was approaching from the darkness.

Ethan stood.

“Who is there?”

A familiar voice answered.

“You always were impatient.”

Ethan's blood froze.

Richard stepped into the light.

Alive.

Again.

But this time he wasn't alone.

Daniel stood beside him.

Gabriel behind them.

And between the three men—

Amelia.

Her hands were bound.

Her face was bruised.

But her eyes were clear.

Ethan whispered:

“Amelia.”

She looked at him.

“Don't come closer.”

Richard smiled.

“There he is.”

Ethan's anger exploded.

“You took my family.”

Richard shook his head.

“No.”

“You poisoned me.”

“No.”

“You experimented on my children.”

“No.”

“You burned the hospital.”

“No.”

Ethan stared.

“What do you mean, no?”

Richard stepped forward.

“I didn't take your family.”

He pointed behind him.

“They came willingly.”

Ethan looked at Amelia.

She closed her eyes.

“Is that true?”

She didn't answer.

“Amelia.”

Her voice finally came.

“I had no choice.”

Richard smiled.

“There is always a choice.”

Ethan looked at Daniel.

“You.”

Daniel lowered his head.

Ethan's voice became colder.

“You betrayed us.”

Daniel said nothing.

“Why?”

Still nothing.

“Why?”

Daniel finally looked up.

“Because I thought I could end this.”

Ethan laughed bitterly.

“You became part of it.”

“I know.”

“You lied to me.”

“Yes.”

“You let me believe you were dead.”

“Yes.”

“You let me believe Richard was my father.”

“Yes.”

“And now you brought Amelia and my daughters here.”

Daniel's eyes filled with tears.

“I brought them here to save them.”

Ethan stared.

“From what?”

Daniel pointed toward Richard.

“From him.”

Richard smiled.

“Your father still doesn't understand.”

THE LAST CONFRONTATION

A door opened behind Richard.

Lily appeared.

She was holding Emma's hand.

Ethan almost collapsed with relief.

“Lily!”

She ran toward him.

Richard didn't stop her.

Ethan dropped to his knees.

His daughter threw herself into his arms.

“Daddy!”

He held her tightly.

“I've got you.”

“I knew you'd come.”

Ethan kissed the top of her head.

“I will always come.”

Emma stood beside them.

Quiet.

Frightened.

Ethan reached for her too.

She hesitated.

Then she stepped into his arms.

For several seconds, nothing else mattered.

Then Richard spoke.

“You have five minutes.”

Ethan looked up.

“For what?”

Richard pointed toward the ceiling.

The entire facility began shaking.

“Before this place collapses.”

Alexander looked at the structural monitor.

“He's telling the truth.”

Ethan stood.

“Then let us go.”

Richard smiled.

“You don't understand.”

“What?”

“You're not leaving.”

Ethan tightened his arms around the girls.

Richard continued:

“You are going to make the final choice.”

“No.”

“Yes.”

“I won't.”

Richard looked toward Amelia.

“Then she dies.”

Ethan's face changed.

Richard pointed toward Daniel.

“Or him.”

Then Gabriel.

“Or him.”

Then finally—

the girls.

“Or them.”

Ethan stared.

“You're still playing the same game.”

Richard nodded.

“It worked before.”

“No.”

Ethan stepped forward.

“It worked because we believed you.”

Richard's smile faded.

“I don't anymore.”

THE WOMAN WHO FINALLY SPOKE

Amelia suddenly stepped forward.

“Ethan.”

Richard turned.

“Quiet.”

“No.”

Her voice was stronger.

“I've been quiet for twenty years.”

She looked at Ethan.

“I won't be quiet anymore.”

Richard raised his weapon.

Amelia didn't move.

“I know what you did.”

“You don't know anything.”

“I know everything.”

She looked toward Daniel.

“You betrayed Ethan.”

Daniel nodded.

“I did.”

“You betrayed Margaret.”

“Yes.”

“You betrayed Gabriel.”

“Yes.”

“You betrayed yourself.”

Daniel's face broke.

Amelia continued.

“But you never betrayed me.”

Ethan stared.

Daniel looked at her.

“I tried.”

“You failed.”

“I know.”

“But you tried.”

Richard's expression darkened.

“Enough.”

Amelia turned toward him.

“No.”

For the first time, Richard looked afraid.

“You don't understand what happens if you keep talking.”

“I understand exactly.”

Amelia smiled sadly.

“That's why you kept me alive.”

Richard froze.

Amelia continued.

“You needed me.”

“You needed my blood.”

“You needed my genetic profile.”

“You needed my cooperation.”

“And you never had it.”

Richard's face hardened.

“You signed the agreement.”

“To protect Ethan.”

“You gave me your DNA.”

“To protect Lily.”

“You allowed Emma to be created.”

“To save her.”

Richard shouted:

“You sacrificed yourself!”

Amelia looked at Ethan.

“Yes.”

“And I would do it again.”

THE TRUTH ABOUT EMMA

Ethan looked at Emma.

“What did they do to you?”

The little girl didn't answer.

Lily held her hand.

“She doesn't like talking about it.”

Ethan crouched.

“It's okay.”

Emma finally whispered:

“I remember the room.”

Ethan's heart broke.

“What room?”

“The white room.”

“Were you alone?”

“No.”

“Who was there?”

Emma looked toward Richard.

“Grandpa.”

Richard's expression changed.

“What did he do?”

Emma's lips trembled.

“He told me I wasn't real.”

Ethan closed his eyes.

“He said Lily was real.”

“And I wasn't.”

Ethan hugged her.

“You are real.”

“But he said—”

“He was wrong.”

Emma began crying.

Ethan held her tighter.

“You are my daughter.”

She whispered:

“Really?”

“Really.”

Richard watched them.

For the first time, he looked defeated.

THE DOCTOR'S FINAL MOVE

A gunshot exploded.

Everyone turned.

Dr. Samuel Hayes stood in the doorway.

His white coat was covered in blood.

Victor Crane lay behind him.

Dead.

Ethan stared.

“Doctor?”

Samuel lowered the gun.

“I told you there was only one way to stop them.”

Alexander raised his weapon.

“Put it down.”

Samuel ignored him.

He walked toward Ethan.

“I need Lily.”

Ethan immediately stepped in front of her.

“No.”

“She has to receive the injection.”

“No.”

“Ethan.”

“No.”

“Listen to me.”

“You lied to me.”

“Yes.”

“You hid everything.”

“Yes.”

“You worked with Richard.”

“Yes.”

“You knew about the experiment.”

“Yes.”

Ethan's voice became cold.

“And now you want my daughter.”

Samuel shook his head.

“I want to save her.”

“You've all said that.”

“I know.”

“Then prove it.”

Samuel stopped.

“How?”

“Tell me the truth.”

The doctor looked toward Richard.

Then Daniel.

Then Amelia.

Finally Ethan.

“The formula is not a cure.”

Silence.

“It never was.”

Ethan frowned.

“What is it?”

Samuel answered:

“A reset.”

“A reset?”

“It can reverse the genetic modifications.”

“On whom?”

“Everyone.”

Ethan stared.

“That means…”

“The experiment can be undone.”

Richard suddenly shouted:

“No!”

Samuel looked at him.

“Yes.”

Richard stepped forward.

“You promised.”

“I promised to save them.”

“You promised me immortality.”

“I lied.”

Richard's face twisted with rage.

“You betrayed me.”

Samuel smiled sadly.

“I betrayed you years ago.”

THE MACHINE

The walls opened.

A massive machine rose from the floor.

Alexander stared.

“This was hidden here.”

Samuel nodded.

“The original chamber.”

Ethan looked at it.

“What does it do?”

“Reverses the mutation.”

“And the children?”

“They survive.”

“Amelia?”

“She survives.”

“Me?”

“You survive.”

“Then what's the catch?”

Samuel looked at him.

“Someone has to activate it manually.”

Ethan understood.

“Who?”

“The carrier.”

Everyone looked at him.

“No.”

Richard smiled.

“Yes.”

Samuel continued.

“Your blood contains the original mutation.”

“If you activate the system, it will use your genetic profile as the baseline.”

“What happens to me?”

Samuel didn't answer.

Ethan stared.

“What happens?”

“You may not survive.”

Amelia stepped forward.

“No.”

Ethan looked at her.

“If I don't do it, what happens?”

“Richard keeps the system.”

“And my daughters?”

“They remain subjects.”

Ethan looked at Lily.

She was crying.

He looked at Emma.

Then Amelia.

Then Alexander.

His family.

The people he had spent his entire life trying to protect.

He walked toward the machine.

Amelia grabbed his arm.

“Don't.”

“I have to.”

“No.”

“You said you would sacrifice yourself.”

“For you.”

“Then let me do this for you.”

She shook her head.

“I already lost you once.”

“You didn't.”

“I watched you mourn me.”

“You came back.”

“I don't want to lose you again.”

Ethan touched her cheek.

“You won't.”

She stared at him.

“You don't know that.”

“No.”

He smiled.

“But I know one thing.”

“What?”

“I spent forty years living for people who lied to me.”

He looked at Lily.

“Now I get to choose.”

THE MAN WHO COULDN'T DIE

Richard stepped forward.

“You're making a mistake.”

Ethan looked at him.

“For once, I don't care what you think.”

Richard raised his weapon.

Alexander aimed at him.

“Drop it.”

Richard laughed.

“You still don't understand.”

He looked at Ethan.

“If you activate that machine, you won't just destroy the mutation.”

“You'll destroy yourself.”

Ethan smiled.

“Maybe.”

Richard lowered his weapon.

“But you don't know what happens next.”

Ethan stopped.

Richard whispered:

“Your mother didn't create you.”

Ethan frowned.

“What?”

“Victor didn't create you.”

Ethan's expression changed.

“Then who did?”

Richard smiled.

“You did.”

Silence.

“The experiment altered your body.”

“But your mind?”

Richard stepped closer.

“You were born with it.”

Ethan stared.

“What are you talking about?”

Richard looked at Lily.

“She inherited your natural mutation.”

Then Emma.

“She inherited the artificial one.”

Then Sofia.

“She inherited the controlled one.”

Finally Amelia.

“And she carried the stabilizing gene.”

Ethan understood.

All four were necessary.

But he was the key.

Richard wasn't trying to kill him.

He needed Ethan alive.

“Why?”

Richard answered:

“Because you're the only person capable of controlling the final formula.”

Ethan looked at Samuel.

“Is that true?”

Samuel nodded.

“Yes.”

Richard smiled.

“You can save everyone.”

Ethan frowned.

“But you never told me.”

“Because if you knew, you'd never cooperate.”

Richard stepped closer.

“And now you have a choice.”

THE FINAL CHOICE

The countdown began.

03:00

Samuel shouted:

“Ethan!”

The machine activated.

02:59

Lily grabbed Ethan's hand.

“Daddy.”

He looked down.

“Yes?”

“Don't go.”

His heart broke.

“I have to.”

“No.”

She hugged him.

“I need you.”

Ethan closed his eyes.

“You're the reason I'm doing this.”

Amelia stepped forward.

“I'll go with you.”

“No.”

“I won't let you face it alone.”

“You don't know what will happen.”

“I don't care.”

Ethan looked at her.

“You should.”

She smiled through tears.

“I already spent seven years believing you were dead.”

She took his hand.

“I won't spend another second without you.”

The countdown continued.

02:12

Alexander stepped forward.

“I'm coming too.”

Ethan shook his head.

“No.”

“I'm your brother.”

“That's why you stay.”

“Ethan—”

“Someone has to protect them.”

Alexander looked at Lily and Emma.

He understood.

He nodded.

“I'll protect them.”

Ethan stepped into the machine.

Amelia followed.

Samuel began entering the final sequence.

Richard watched.

For the first time, he looked genuinely afraid.

“What are you doing?”

Samuel didn't answer.

Richard grabbed him.

“You said it would restore the mutation.”

Samuel looked at him.

“It will.”

“Then why are you afraid?”

Samuel smiled.

“Because you don't know the final clause.”

Richard froze.

“What clause?”

Samuel pressed the final button.

“The machine doesn't recognize ownership.”

Richard stared.

“It recognizes blood.”

The machine activated.

A violent wave of light swept through the chamber.

Richard screamed.

Amelia collapsed.

Ethan gripped the controls.

Lily cried out.

Emma fell to the floor.

Alexander caught her.

Sofia appeared in the doorway.

Her eyes widened.

“It's happening.”

Ethan shouted:

“What?”

“The reset.”

Samuel stared at the monitor.

“No.”

Ethan looked at him.

“What?”

Samuel's face went pale.

“The system isn't resetting the mutation.”

“What is it doing?”

“It is removing the genetic modifications.”

“That's what we wanted.”

Samuel shook his head.

“No.”

He looked toward Ethan.

“It is removing them from everyone.”

Ethan's heart stopped.

“Everyone?”

“Every person carrying the Blackwood mutation.”

“Then why is the system still running?”

Samuel looked at the screen.

A new line appeared.

GLOBAL GENETIC RESET — 00:59

Ethan stared.

“How do we stop it?”

Samuel whispered:

“We can't.”

Richard laughed.

A broken, desperate laugh.

“Finally.”

Ethan looked at him.

Richard's eyes were filled with tears.

“You'll destroy everything.”

Ethan stepped toward him.

“No.”

Richard smiled.

“You'll destroy yourself.”

Ethan looked at Amelia.

At Lily.

At Emma.

At Alexander.

Then at the countdown.

00:47

He understood.

The machine wasn't a cure.

It was a weapon.

And if it completed—

millions of people could die.

Ethan reached for the emergency shutdown.

Richard suddenly lunged.

They crashed into the controls.

Amelia screamed.

“ETHAN!”

Richard grabbed him.

“You don't understand what you're destroying!”

Ethan fought back.

“Your empire.”

“My life's work!”

“Your obsession!”

Richard struck him.

Ethan fell.

Richard reached for the final control.

Then Lily stepped forward.

“Stop!”

Richard froze.

The little girl stood between them.

She was shaking.

But she didn't move.

“You hurt my daddy.”

Richard stared at her.

“You don't understand.”

“Yes, I do.”

Lily's voice trembled.

“You're the bad man.”

Richard's expression broke.

For a moment, he looked less like a monster.

And more like an old, exhausted man.

“I only wanted to save everyone.”

Lily shook her head.

“No.”

She looked at Ethan.

“You wanted everyone to belong to you.”

Richard stared at her.

Then he lowered his hand.

Ethan rose.

He reached the control panel.

00:21

Samuel shouted:

“Ethan!”

He entered the emergency code.

Nothing.

00:18

Again.

Nothing.

00:15

He looked at Amelia.

She understood.

“Ethan.”

He shook his head.

“No.”

She stepped toward him.

“Listen.”

“No.”

“You have to.”

“I won't lose you.”

“You won't.”

“How do you know?”

She smiled.

“Because I know you.”

She kissed him.

Then whispered:

“Trust me.”

Ethan closed his eyes.

He entered the final sequence.

00:08

The machine screamed.

00:05

The chamber shook.

00:03

Richard lunged.

Alexander tackled him.

00:02

Ethan pulled Amelia into his arms.

00:01

The system went dark.

Silence.

No explosion.

No fire.

No screaming.

Just silence.

Ethan opened his eyes.

Amelia was still breathing.

Lily was alive.

Emma was alive.

Alexander was alive.

Samuel was alive.

Richard—

was gone.

Ethan looked around.

“Where is he?”

Alexander pointed toward the collapsed tunnel.

“He didn't make it.”

Ethan stared at the rubble.

For forty years, Richard Blackwood had controlled their lives.

Now he was buried beneath the empire he had built.

No grave.

No funeral.

No monument.

Just darkness.

Ethan walked toward the others.

Lily ran into his arms.

“Daddy.”

He held her.

“I'm here.”

Emma joined them.

Amelia wrapped her arms around all three.

For the first time, Ethan felt something he had almost forgotten.

Peace.

Then Samuel looked at the monitor.

His expression changed.

“Ethan.”

Ethan turned.

“What?”

Samuel pointed.

One line remained illuminated.

RESET COMPLETE.

Below it:

ONE SUBJECT RETAINED.

Ethan frowned.

“Who?”

Samuel's face went white.

He looked toward the doorway.

Sofia was standing there.

She smiled.

“I told you.”

Ethan stared.

“Told me what?”

Sofia lifted her hand.

The crescent-shaped mark on her skin had disappeared.

“I was never the fourth subject.”

Ethan's blood ran cold.

“Then what are you?”

Sofia's smile widened.

“The fifth.”

Behind her, the lights came back on.

Every screen in the facility displayed the same message:

SUBJECT FIVE — ACTIVE.

Ethan stepped forward.

Sofia whispered:

“And now that everyone thinks the experiment is over…”

May you like

She looked toward the dark corridor.

“…we can finally begin the real one.”
