CHAPTER 4 — THE NIGHT AMELIA DISAPPEARED

CHAPTER 4 — THE NIGHT AMELIA DISAPPEARED

The phone slipped from Ethan's hand.

It landed on the carpet without making a sound.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The last words still echoed through his mind.

I think I'm your daughter too.

Ethan looked at Amelia.

She was sitting rigidly in the chair, both hands covering her mouth.

Her face had lost all color.

“Amelia.”

She didn't answer.

“Who is Emma?”

Amelia's eyes filled with tears.

“I don't know.”

Ethan stared at her.

“You don't know?”

“No.”

“Then why do you look like you've seen a ghost?”

Amelia slowly lowered her hands.

“Because that name…”

Her voice broke.

“I haven't heard it in seven years.”

Ethan stepped closer.

“You knew the name?”

Amelia closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

The admission hit him harder than any accusation could have.

“Tell me everything.”

Amelia looked toward the empty bed.

“I can't.”

“You can.”

“No, Ethan.”

“You just told me there might be another daughter.”

“I said I don't know.”

“Then tell me what you do know.”

Amelia shook her head.

“You don't understand what happened that night.”

“Then make me understand.”

She looked at him.

“I tried.”

“Seven years ago, you tried to tell me something?”

“Yes.”

“What?”

“That Lily wasn't alone.”

Ethan's breath caught.

“What do you mean?”

Amelia's eyes filled with terror.

“She had a twin.”

TWO HEARTBEATS

The room seemed to tilt.

Ethan gripped the edge of the desk.

“A twin?”

Amelia nodded.

“I was pregnant with two babies.”

“Why didn't anyone tell me?”

“They didn't know.”

“You didn't know?”

“I knew something was wrong during the final ultrasound.”

Amelia's voice trembled.

“The doctor said there were two heartbeats.”

Ethan stared at her.

“Two?”

“Yes.”

“Then why was I told there was only one baby?”

“Because the records were changed.”

“By whom?”

Amelia looked at him.

“Your father.”

Ethan felt a coldness spread through his chest.

“My father knew?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because the second baby was a problem.”

“What problem?”

Amelia swallowed.

“She wasn't supposed to exist.”

THE LAST ULTRASOUND

Amelia remembered the day clearly.

She had been eight months pregnant.

Ethan had been beside her, holding her hand.

The doctor moved the ultrasound device across her stomach.

At first, everything appeared normal.

Then the doctor frowned.

“What is it?” Ethan had asked.

The doctor didn't answer.

He adjusted the machine.

Then—

another heartbeat.

Faster.

Smaller.

But unmistakable.

Ethan's face had lit up.

“There are two?”

The doctor stared at the screen.

“Yes.”

Amelia had begun crying.

Ethan kissed her forehead.

“Twins.”

But the doctor didn't smile.

He looked frightened.

After the appointment, he pulled Ethan aside.

“Mr. Blackwood, you cannot tell anyone about this.”

Ethan had frowned.

“Why?”

The doctor looked around.

“Because your father's people were here this morning.”

Ethan remembered the conversation now.

He remembered the doctor's strange expression.

He remembered asking his father about the appointment.

Richard had smiled.

“You're confused.”

“There are two babies.”

“No.”

“I saw them.”

“You saw a shadow.”

Ethan had believed him.

Because Richard Blackwood never appeared uncertain.

Not then.

Not ever.

THE SECOND CHILD

Amelia continued.

“The doctor tried to protect us.”

“How?”

“He created a private record.”

“For Emma?”

“We didn't know her name yet.”

Ethan stared.

“Then where did Emma come from?”

Amelia looked down.

“Your father named her.”

Ethan's face hardened.

“Why would he name a child he wanted hidden?”

“Because he wasn't trying to kill her.”

“What?”

“He wanted her.”

Silence.

“Why?”

Amelia hesitated.

“She had a different blood type.”

Ethan frowned.

“So?”

“She carried a genetic marker.”

“The same one Lily has?”

“No.”

Amelia's voice became quieter.

“Something different.”

“What?”

“I don't know.”

“But your father did.”

“Yes.”

“And that's why he wanted her?”

“Yes.”

Ethan paced across the room.

“Then why was Lily allowed to live?”

“Because Lily was the heir.”

“And Emma?”

“Emma was the experiment.”

THE NIGHT EVERYTHING BURNED

The night of the fire began with rain.

Ethan remembered that.

Heavy rain against the hospital windows.

He had left Amelia for only two hours.

He promised to return before midnight.

He never imagined it would become the last normal moment of his life.

Amelia was alone in the maternity ward when the lights flickered.

Then the alarm sounded.

Smoke entered through the ventilation system.

She pressed the emergency button.

Nothing happened.

She tried the door.

Locked.

“Help!”

No one came.

Then she heard footsteps.

The door opened.

Victor entered.

He wore the black ring.

Amelia immediately knew something was wrong.

“Where is Ethan?”

Victor smiled.

“He won't be coming.”

“What did you do?”

“Nothing.”

“Where's the doctor?”

“Gone.”

Amelia backed away.

“You're lying.”

Victor looked toward her stomach.

“Where are the babies?”

Amelia's heart stopped.

He knew.

He knew there were two.

“You knew?”

Victor smiled.

“Of course.”

Then he stepped closer.

“Your father-in-law wants the second child.”

“Why?”

“That isn't your concern.”

“It is my child.”

Victor's expression became cold.

“Not anymore.”

THE NURSE

A nurse suddenly appeared behind Victor.

She held a white blanket.

“Give me the baby.”

Amelia refused.

“No.”

“Mrs. Blackwood, please.”

“No!”

Victor grabbed Amelia's arm.

“You don't have a choice.”

Amelia screamed.

Then pain tore through her body.

The babies were coming.

Too early.

Too fast.

The nurse panicked.

“She's going into labor!”

Victor stepped away.

“Get the children out.”

The nurse looked at him.

“Both?”

Victor hesitated.

“No.”

He pointed toward Amelia.

“Take the girl.”

“The other baby?”

“Leave her.”

Amelia heard every word.

She screamed.

“No!”

She reached for her newborn.

The nurse lifted the first baby.

Lily.

Tiny.

Crying.

Alive.

Then another cry came.

A second child.

A smaller baby.

Emma.

Amelia tried to reach her.

But Victor blocked her.

“Take the second one.”

The nurse looked horrified.

“Where?”

Victor's answer was cold.

“Somewhere no one will find her.”

THE WOMAN WHO STOLE A CHILD

The nurse took Emma.

But she didn't follow Victor's instructions.

Instead, she wrapped the baby in a blanket and hid her beneath her uniform.

She carried Lily toward the emergency exit.

Amelia watched helplessly.

“Please!”

The nurse looked back.

“I'll save them.”

Then the fire reached the room.

Victor disappeared.

Amelia passed out.

The last thing she remembered was the sound of two newborn babies crying.

When she woke—

there was only one.

Lily.

Emma was gone.

THE FALSE DEATH

The official report stated:

One female infant recovered.

Mother deceased.

No surviving second child.

But that report was a lie.

Amelia was alive.

Lily was alive.

Emma was alive.

Three lives had been erased in a single night.

Ethan had been told his wife and daughter were dead.

Victor had taken Lily.

Richard had taken Amelia.

And Emma—

someone else had taken Emma.

Ethan stared at Amelia.

“Who?”

“I don't know.”

“You never found her?”

“I tried.”

“For seven years?”

“Every day.”

“Then how did you know the name Emma?”

Amelia began crying.

“Because I gave her that name.”

Ethan stopped.

“You named her?”

“Yes.”

“Before the fire?”

Amelia nodded.

“You and I had two names.”

“Lily and Emma.”

“Yes.”

“Then why did we only know about Lily?”

“Because your father stole the records.”

THE SECRET RECORD

Amelia reached beneath the mattress.

She pulled out a small envelope.

Ethan stared.

“You kept that?”

“I've carried it for seven years.”

She handed it to him.

Inside was a photograph.

Two newborn babies.

Side by side.

Ethan's breath caught.

Lily and Emma.

Both alive.

Both tiny.

Both wearing identical hospital bracelets.

But there was something else.

A handwritten note:

BABY A — LILY

BABY B — EMMA

DO NOT DISCLOSE SECOND CHILD.

Ethan turned the photograph over.

There was another sentence.

THE BLACKWOOD BLOODLINE CANNOT SURVIVE BOTH.

He stared at it.

“What does that mean?”

Amelia shook her head.

“I never understood.”

Ethan read it again.

Then he remembered the genetic report.

Lily carried one marker.

Emma supposedly carried another.

Two different genetic traits.

Two potential heirs.

Two threats to the Blackwood succession.

“Your father wanted one of them.”

Amelia nodded.

“But which one?”

“I don't know.”

Ethan looked at her.

“Then why is Emma calling me now?”

Amelia's expression changed.

“Because someone wants you to find her.”

THE SECOND CALL

The phone rang again.

Same unknown number.

Ethan answered immediately.

“Emma?”

A child's voice whispered:

“Yes.”

Ethan closed his eyes.

“Where are you?”

“I don't know.”

“Are you hurt?”

“No.”

“Is someone with you?”

“Yes.”

“Who?”

Silence.

“Emma?”

The girl began crying.

“A man.”

“What man?”

“He says he's my father.”

Ethan's heart stopped.

“What?”

“He says you're not.”

“Emma, listen to me.”

“Okay.”

“My name is Ethan Blackwood.”

“I know.”

“I am your father.”

“No.”

The child sounded confused.

“He said you died.”

Ethan's chest tightened.

“Who told you?”

“The man.”

“What is his name?”

A long pause.

Then:

“Alexander.”

Ethan went still.

Amelia's eyes widened.

“Alexander?”

“Yes.”

Ethan looked at Amelia.

“Put him on.”

The child hesitated.

“He doesn't want to talk to you.”

“Emma, please.”

Then a man's voice came through.

Calm.

Deep.

Familiar.

“Hello, Ethan.”

Ethan's blood turned cold.

“Alexander.”

“Yes.”

“Where is my daughter?”

“Which one?”

Ethan clenched his jaw.

“Emma.”

Alexander laughed softly.

“You finally know her name.”

“What do you want?”

“The truth.”

“I want my daughter.”

“You already have Lily.”

“She is my daughter too.”

“No.”

Alexander's voice hardened.

“Lily belongs to you.”

“And Emma?”

“She belongs to me.”

Ethan's eyes narrowed.

“You're her father?”

“No.”

“Then who are you?”

Alexander was silent.

Then he said:

“I'm the reason she survived.”

The call ended.

THE BLOOD OF TWO SISTERS

Samuel examined the photographs and the old documents.

His face became increasingly serious.

“There is something strange.”

Ethan stood beside him.

“What?”

“The twins aren't identical.”

Amelia nodded.

“We knew that.”

“No.”

Samuel pointed to the genetic report.

“I'm talking about something else.”

He compared Lily's file with the old photograph.

“Their blood markers are different.”

“How different?”

“Enough that one child inherited Amelia's rare resistance.”

“And the other?”

Samuel stared at the screen.

“The other inherited Richard's original genetic sequence.”

Ethan froze.

“Emma.”

“Yes.”

“What does that mean?”

Samuel swallowed.

“Emma may have inherited the condition.”

Amelia stepped closer.

“Then she's sick?”

“Not necessarily.”

Samuel enlarged another line.

“There is another mutation.”

“What?”

“I've never seen this combination before.”

Ethan stared.

“Can it be treated?”

Samuel looked at him.

“Possibly.”

“With Lily's blood?”

“No.”

He shook his head.

“With Emma's.”

Silence.

Ethan suddenly understood.

The two sisters were not simply heirs.

They were the missing pieces of the research Richard had spent decades pursuing.

Lily carried the resistance.

Emma carried the disease.

Together—

they could potentially unlock a treatment.

And someone had known that since the night they were born.

THE FINAL RECORDING

Daniel returned with one final file.

It had been recovered from Richard's private archive.

Ethan pressed play.

Richard's voice filled the room.

“If you're hearing this, then both children survived.”

Ethan stared.

Richard continued.

“Lily carries the resistance.”

“Emma carries the original mutation.”

“Their blood together may cure the Blackwood disease.”

A pause.

“But the family cannot survive if both children inherit the trust.”

Ethan's face hardened.

Richard continued:

“Therefore, one child must disappear.”

Amelia began crying.

“No…”

Richard's voice became colder.

“Victor will choose Lily.”

“Alexander will choose Emma.”

“And I will choose neither.”

Ethan stared at the recorder.

“What does that mean?”

Richard answered from the recording:

“I will make them both disappear.”

The recording ended.

Silence.

Then a second recording automatically began.

A younger Richard.

Terrified.

“If my sons discover this, tell them one thing.”

Ethan leaned closer.

“Your family was never fighting over money.”

Richard whispered:

“They were fighting over which child would control the cure.”

The recording stopped.

Ethan looked at Amelia.

Her face was wet with tears.

“What happened after that?”

“I don't know.”

“Where did Emma go?”

“I told you.”

“No.”

Ethan's voice cracked.

“You've been hiding something.”

Amelia looked at him.

“I remembered something tonight.”

“What?”

“The nurse.”

“Which nurse?”

“The woman who took Emma.”

“Who was she?”

Amelia closed her eyes.

Then whispered:

“Her name was Eleanor.”

Ethan froze.

“Eleanor what?”

“I don't know.”

“Where did she go?”

Amelia looked toward the window.

“She didn't disappear.”

“What?”

“She followed us.”

Ethan stared.

“What are you talking about?”

Amelia pointed toward the dark garden.

“She was at the mansion tonight.”

Ethan immediately turned.

Marcus rushed into the room.

“Sir!”

“What?”

“We found something outside.”

He held up a small silver bracelet.

Ethan recognized it instantly.

The bracelet had belonged to Emma.

“How did you find this?”

Marcus looked toward the garden.

“It was placed on the fountain.”

Ethan took it.

There was an inscription inside.

EMMA — COME HOME.

Then his phone vibrated.

A new photograph appeared.

Emma stood beside a woman.

The woman was older now.

Her hair was gray.

Her face was thin.

But Ethan recognized her immediately.

The nurse from the hospital.

Eleanor.

Beneath the photograph was a message:

I DIDN'T STEAL YOUR DAUGHTER.

Another message appeared.

I SAVED HER FROM YOUR FAMILY.

Then a final one.

AND TONIGHT, THEY FOUND US.

Ethan looked toward the garden.

A shadow moved beyond the trees.

Marcus raised his weapon.

“Sir…”

Ethan stepped forward.

“Don't shoot.”

The shadow emerged.

An elderly woman stood beneath the moonlight.

She held a photograph against her chest.

“Ethan Blackwood?”

“Yes.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I've been waiting seven years to meet you.”

Ethan stared at her.

“Where is Emma?”

Eleanor looked behind him.

Then whispered:

“She isn't with Alexander.”

Ethan's heart stopped.

“Then where is she?”

Eleanor's face became terrified.

“Your daughter was taken by someone else.”

“Who?”

Eleanor stepped closer.

May you like

And whispered the words that made Ethan's blood run cold:

“Your mother.”
