CHAPTER 9 — THE SECOND FIRE

CHAPTER 9 — THE SECOND FIRE
“Daddy!”
Lily's scream tore through the darkness.
Ethan ran.
He didn't know where he was going.
He didn't know who had spoken.
He only knew that his daughter was somewhere inside the underground facility.
And someone had just called him Father.
The emergency lights flickered once.
Twice.
Then the entire corridor erupted in red.
Smoke poured from the ceiling.
A warning siren began screaming.
FIRE DETECTED.
Ethan stopped.
For one terrible second, the past came rushing back.
The hospital.
The flames.
Amelia disappearing.
A newborn baby declared dead.
Seven years of grief.
And now—
another fire.
“LILY!”
“Daddy!”
Her voice came from behind a steel door.
Ethan ran toward it.
Alexander grabbed his shoulder.
“Don't!”
“Let go!”
“It's a trap.”
“My daughter is behind that door!”
“And that's exactly why they put her there.”
Ethan shoved him away.
“I've lost her once.”
His voice broke.
“I will not lose her again.”
He reached the door.
It was locked.
He slammed his shoulder against it.
Nothing.
Again.
Nothing.
Then Alexander pulled him aside.
“Move.”
Alexander stepped back and kicked the electronic panel.
Sparks exploded.
The lock released.
Ethan threw the door open.
“Lily!”
The room was empty.
A small yellow pajama top lay on the floor.
Ethan froze.
“No.”
He rushed inside.
“Lily!”
Nothing.
Then he saw the wall.
A child's handprint had been painted across it in red.
Beneath it were four words:
YOU WERE TOO LATE, DADDY.
Ethan stared.
Behind him, Alexander whispered:
“Run.”
A second explosion shook the building.
The ceiling cracked.
Flames appeared at the far end of the corridor.
And suddenly Ethan understood.
This wasn't another hospital fire.
It was something worse.
Someone had planned it specifically for them.
THE SECOND FIRE
“Everybody out!”
Marcus appeared through the smoke.
His face was covered in soot.
“Sir, the eastern tunnel is collapsing.”
“What about Amelia?”
“She's with Eleanor.”
“Lily?”
Marcus hesitated.
“We haven't found her.”
Ethan's heart sank.
“Find her.”
“We're trying.”
“No.”
Ethan pointed toward the burning corridor.
“She's here.”
Marcus stared at him.
“Sir—”
“She screamed my name.”
“We heard it.”
“Then she didn't disappear.”
Alexander looked toward the ceiling.
“Someone is broadcasting her voice.”
Ethan turned.
“What?”
Alexander's expression darkened.
“Gabriel.”
A voice suddenly echoed through the speakers.
“You're learning.”
Ethan looked up.
“Where is Lily?”
A soft laugh.
“Safe.”
“Show me.”
“No.”
“Then I'll burn this entire place down.”
“You don't understand.”
“I understand perfectly.”
Ethan stepped toward the nearest camera.
“You took my daughter.”
“No.”
“You threatened Amelia.”
“No.”
“You started the fire.”
Gabriel paused.
Then:
“I started the first one.”
Ethan froze.
Alexander's face went white.
“What did you say?”
Gabriel continued.
“The hospital fire.”
Ethan's blood turned cold.
“You?”
“I was eleven.”
“You were there?”
“Yes.”
“You killed my wife?”
“No.”
“Then what happened?”
Silence.
The fire roared behind them.
Finally Gabriel said:
“I was trying to save her.”
THE NIGHT OF THE FIRST FIRE
Twenty-one years earlier.
Gabriel had been eleven.
He had been locked inside the Blackwood laboratory beneath the hospital.
Richard had been conducting another experiment.
Margaret discovered what was happening.
She tried to stop him.
Richard locked her out.
Gabriel heard his mother's screams.
He found a maintenance room.
He found fuel.
He found an emergency electrical panel.
And he made a decision.
He started a fire.
Not to kill anyone.
To destroy the laboratory.
To destroy the research.
To destroy the records.
But the fire spread faster than he expected.
The hospital evacuation began.
Amelia was in the maternity ward.
Ethan was outside.
Margaret disappeared.
And Gabriel was presumed dead.
But he survived.
Barely.
The scars across his body were not from Richard's experiments.
They were from that fire.
Ethan stared at the speaker.
“You started the fire.”
“Yes.”
“And Amelia?”
“I tried to reach her.”
“You were there.”
“Yes.”
“You watched her disappear.”
“I watched Richard take her.”
Ethan's breathing became uneven.
“Why didn't you save her?”
Gabriel's voice cracked.
“Because I was eleven.”
The words silenced everyone.
For the first time, Gabriel didn't sound like an enemy.
He sounded like a child.
A terrified child who had been left alone inside a burning building.
THE WOMAN WHO KNEW
Eleanor suddenly spoke.
“He's telling the truth.”
Ethan turned.
“You knew?”
“I knew he started the fire.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because Margaret begged me not to.”
“Why?”
Eleanor looked toward the flames.
“Because if Richard discovered Gabriel had survived, he would hunt him.”
Ethan's jaw tightened.
“So everyone lied.”
“Yes.”
“Everyone.”
“Yes.”
“Even Amelia?”
Eleanor looked away.
Ethan turned toward Amelia.
She was standing at the end of the corridor.
Crying.
“I knew Gabriel survived.”
Ethan stared at her.
“When?”
“Years ago.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because he made me promise.”
“What promise?”
“To protect Lily.”
Ethan laughed bitterly.
“Everybody has a promise.”
Amelia stepped closer.
“I thought if I told you, Richard would find her.”
“And now?”
“Now Richard already has.”
Ethan looked toward the burning corridor.
Then something occurred to him.
“Where is Richard?”
Nobody answered.
“Where is my father?”
Marcus looked at his phone.
“He's gone.”
Ethan's face hardened.
“When?”
“Three minutes ago.”
“Where?”
Marcus looked at the security map.
“There is a private exit beneath the west wing.”
Ethan immediately started walking.
Alexander grabbed his arm.
“Don't.”
Ethan turned.
“Not again.”
“Richard wants you to follow him.”
“Good.”
“You'll walk straight into a trap.”
“Then I'll bring the trap down on him.”
THE ROOM WITH NO WINDOWS
They found the hidden elevator beneath the laboratory.
It descended.
Lower.
And lower.
Past the level marked on the building plans.
The elevator stopped.
The doors opened.
A corridor stretched ahead.
No windows.
No cameras.
No sound.
At the end stood a single chair.
On it was a small pink backpack.
Lily's.
Ethan ran toward it.
Inside was her favorite stuffed rabbit.
A drawing.
And a note.
He unfolded it.
The handwriting was childish.
Daddy, don't be scared.
Ethan's eyes filled with tears.
Underneath was another sentence.
Mommy says I have to be brave.
Then:
Grandma says you will come.
Ethan pressed the paper to his chest.
“She was here.”
Alexander examined the floor.
“She left recently.”
“How do you know?”
“Dust.”
He pointed.
Small footprints.
Two sets.
Ethan stared.
“Two?”
Alexander nodded.
“Lily wasn't alone.”
“Emma.”
“Yes.”
Ethan looked toward the corridor.
“Then they're still here.”
A voice answered from behind them.
“No.”
They turned.
Margaret stood at the far end.
Ethan's mother.
Alive.
But she was holding something.
A detonator.
“Mom?”
She looked at him.
Tears filled her eyes.
“I'm sorry.”
Ethan's heart dropped.
“What are you doing?”
Margaret raised the device.
“I have to finish what I started.”
THE WOMAN WHO BETRAYED THEM
Ethan stared at his mother.
“You started this?”
Margaret shook her head.
“I started the research.”
“You started the fire?”
“No.”
“You knew about Gabriel.”
“Yes.”
“You knew about Lily.”
“Yes.”
“You knew about Emma.”
“Yes.”
“And you knew Richard was alive.”
“Yes.”
Ethan's voice broke.
“Then why?”
Margaret looked at him.
“Because I believed I could control the damage.”
“You couldn't.”
“I know.”
“You destroyed all of us.”
“I know.”
“You let me bury my wife.”
“I know.”
“You let me believe my daughter was dead.”
“I know.”
Ethan stepped closer.
“Why?”
Margaret began crying.
“Because Richard gave me a choice.”
“Which was?”
“Alexander.”
“Or Gabriel.”
Ethan froze.
“He told me he would kill one.”
Margaret's hand shook around the detonator.
“I chose Alexander.”
Ethan stared.
“You sacrificed Gabriel.”
“Yes.”
“And then?”
“I tried to find him.”
“But you couldn't.”
“No.”
“Then why is he alive?”
Margaret looked toward the ceiling.
“Because I wasn't the only one who betrayed him.”
Ethan frowned.
“Who?”
Margaret whispered:
“Daniel.”
DANIEL'S SECRET
Ethan's father—or the man he had believed was his father—had been involved from the beginning.
Daniel Vale had helped Margaret hide Alexander.
But he had also made a secret deal with Richard.
Daniel would help preserve Ethan's identity.
In return, Richard would leave Margaret alive.
Daniel agreed.
But Richard changed the terms.
He wanted Gabriel.
Daniel refused.
That was when the first fire happened.
Ethan listened in disbelief.
“So Daniel betrayed Richard.”
“Yes.”
“And you betrayed Gabriel.”
“Yes.”
“And Richard betrayed everyone.”
Margaret nodded.
“That's the Blackwood family.”
Ethan stared at her.
“No.”
He shook his head.
“That isn't family.”
His voice hardened.
“That's a prison.”
THE DETONATOR
Ethan took one step closer.
“Mom.”
“Stay back.”
“Give me the device.”
“I can't.”
“Why?”
“Because Richard has the girls.”
Ethan froze.
“Where?”
Margaret pointed downward.
“Below us.”
“There are no rooms below this level.”
“There are.”
“How many?”
“Three.”
“Who is in them?”
Margaret closed her eyes.
“Lily.”
“Emma.”
“And Amelia.”
Ethan's blood ran cold.
“Then open them.”
“I can't.”
“Why?”
“Because opening one opens all three.”
“Then do it.”
“If I do, the entire facility collapses.”
Ethan stared.
“How?”
“Richard designed it that way.”
“He built a prison.”
“No.”
Margaret's voice trembled.
“He built a grave.”
THE CHOICE
A screen came alive.
Richard appeared.
He sat comfortably in a dark room.
“Hello, Ethan.”
Ethan stepped toward the screen.
“Release them.”
Richard smiled.
“You still think you can negotiate.”
“I don't.”
“Then what do you want?”
“I want you.”
Richard laughed.
“You've always been impatient.”
“You destroyed my family.”
“No.”
Richard leaned forward.
“Your family destroyed itself.”
“You poisoned my mother.”
“She survived.”
“You imprisoned Amelia.”
“She survived.”
“You hunted Lily.”
“She survived.”
“You experimented on Alexander.”
“He survived.”
Ethan's eyes burned.
“That's your excuse?”
Richard's smile disappeared.
“Survival is the only thing that matters.”
Ethan shook his head.
“No.”
He looked directly into the camera.
“Living isn't the same as surviving.”
Richard stared at him.
Ethan continued.
“You taught us to fear you.”
“You taught us to lie.”
“You taught us that love was weakness.”
He took a breath.
“But you made one mistake.”
Richard's expression tightened.
“What?”
“You forgot that we're no longer afraid of you.”
THE GIRLS
The screen changed.
Lily appeared.
She was holding Emma's hand.
Both girls were inside a glass chamber.
Ethan nearly collapsed.
“Lily!”
She looked toward the camera.
“Daddy?”
“Yes!”
“Don't come.”
Ethan's heart broke.
“I'm coming for you.”
Lily shook her head.
“Mommy said not to.”
“Why?”
“Because Grandpa wants you to.”
Ethan froze.
“What?”
Lily looked at someone beside her.
Then whispered:
“There's a door.”
“What door?”
“The red one.”
Ethan looked at Margaret.
Her face changed.
“The red door.”
“What's behind it?”
Margaret whispered:
“The original laboratory.”
Lily continued:
“Grandpa said if Daddy opens it, everyone dies.”
Ethan stared at the screen.
Richard smiled.
“Now you understand.”
Ethan looked at Alexander.
His brother was staring at the screen in horror.
“What?”
Alexander whispered:
“That's not a laboratory.”
“Then what is it?”
“The containment chamber.”
“For what?”
Alexander looked at him.
“For the disease.”
THE TRUTH ABOUT THE BLACKWOOD BLOOD
The original research had never been designed to cure the disease.
It had been designed to control it.
Richard's family had discovered that certain descendants carried a mutation capable of surviving the disease.
But the mutation was unstable.
Some children inherited resistance.
Others inherited the disease.
A rare few inherited both.
Those children could theoretically become the foundation for a permanent cure.
But there was a price.
The process required genetic material from all three variants.
The carrier.
The resistant child.
The stabilizer.
Ethan.
Lily.
Emma.
Richard had spent decades trying to bring them together.
Alexander had been the first failed attempt.
He had survived the experiments.
But he had never been stable.
Lily was different.
Emma was different.
Together, they could complete the research.
Ethan stared at the screen.
“You want to experiment on my daughters.”
Richard smiled.
“I want to save humanity.”
“You want immortality.”
“No.”
Richard leaned toward the camera.
“I want control.”
THE SECOND FIRE
Margaret suddenly pressed the detonator.
Nothing happened.
She looked down.
The device was dead.
Her eyes widened.
“Richard.”
A voice came from behind her.
“I'm sorry, Mother.”
She turned.
Gabriel stood there.
He had taken the detonator.
Margaret froze.
“Gabriel.”
He stared at her.
“You chose Alexander.”
“I was trying to save you.”
“You abandoned me.”
“I was forced.”
“You always say that.”
Gabriel looked at Ethan.
Then at Margaret.
“You always had a choice.”
Margaret began crying.
“I loved you.”
Gabriel's expression cracked.
“I know.”
“Then forgive me.”
He shook his head.
“I can't.”
Ethan stepped between them.
“Enough.”
Gabriel looked at him.
“You don't understand.”
“Then explain.”
Gabriel pointed toward the chamber.
“Richard isn't trying to kill the girls.”
“What is he doing?”
“He's trying to make them choose.”
“Choose what?”
“Which one lives.”
Ethan's blood ran cold.
THE FINAL TEST
Richard's voice returned through the speakers.
“Ethan.”
The screen showed Lily and Emma.
A countdown appeared.
30:00
Ethan stared.
“What is that?”
Richard smiled.
“Your daughters have been given a choice.”
“What choice?”
“Which one gets the antidote.”
Ethan's heart stopped.
“There is only one dose.”
“Correct.”
“Give them both.”
“I can't.”
“You're lying.”
“No.”
Richard shook his head.
“The formula isn't complete.”
Ethan stared at him.
“What happens if neither takes it?”
“They both die.”
“And if one takes it?”
“One survives.”
Ethan's hands shook.
“You monster.”
Richard smiled.
“Choose.”
The countdown continued.
29:41
Lily was crying.
Emma was holding her hand.
Ethan looked at Alexander.
“Can you stop it?”
Alexander stared at the screen.
“I can.”
“How?”
“I need access to the original system.”
“Where?”
“Behind the red door.”
Ethan turned toward Margaret.
“How do we open it?”
She looked at him.
“You don't.”
“Why?”
“Because the second fire already started.”
Smoke began pouring from the ventilation system.
Ethan looked around.
The facility was burning.
Again.
Richard's voice echoed through the speakers.
“You wanted the truth.”
A pause.
“Now watch what it costs.”
THE LAST THING AMELIA SAID
Ethan ran toward the red door.
Alexander followed.
Margaret stayed behind.
“Mom!”
She looked at him.
“I'll hold them back.”
“Come with us!”
“I can't.”
“Why?”
She smiled sadly.
“Because I started this.”
Ethan stopped.
“You don't have to die.”
“I know.”
“Then come.”
Margaret shook her head.
“I've spent nineteen years running from my mistakes.”
She looked at him.
“I'm tired.”
Ethan's eyes filled with tears.
“Mom…”
“Go save your girls.”
The door closed.
Ethan turned.
Alexander grabbed his arm.
“Don't look back.”
They ran.
Behind them, Margaret faced the flames.
For the first time in decades, she wasn't afraid.
THE RED DOOR
Ethan reached the chamber.
Alexander entered the access code.
Nothing.
He tried again.
Still nothing.
Then Ethan noticed something.
A fingerprint scanner.
He placed his hand against it.
The door opened.
Inside was a circular room.
Three machines.
Three genetic terminals.
And in the center—
a photograph.
Richard.
Margaret.
Daniel.
And three babies.
Alexander.
Gabriel.
Ethan.
But there was something written across the bottom.
SUBJECTS A, B, C.
Ethan stared.
“We weren't children.”
Alexander's face went pale.
“We were experiments.”
A monitor activated.
The original research appeared.
SUBJECT A — ALEXANDER
SUBJECT B — GABRIEL
SUBJECT C — ETHAN
Ethan's heart pounded.
Then another line appeared.
FINAL SUBJECT — FEMALE
Alexander stared.
“What?”
A second line appeared.
SUBJECT D — AMELIA
Ethan froze.
“No.”
Alexander looked at him.
“Ethan…”
The monitor revealed Amelia's genetic profile.
It matched the same research.
The same mutation.
The same disease.
The same resistance.
Amelia had never been merely Richard's victim.
She had been part of the experiment.
The entire marriage.
The hospital fire.
The imprisonment.
The daughters.
Everything.
Ethan stared at the screen.
His world collapsed again.
Then the speakers came alive.
Richard's voice was almost gentle.
“Now you know why I chose Amelia.”
Ethan looked toward the camera.
“Why?”
Richard smiled.
“Because she was never your wife by accident.”
The countdown continued.
19:58
And behind the red door, Ethan finally understood the true horror.
The fire had never been meant to destroy the research.
May you like
The fire had been designed to hide it.
And the people Ethan loved most had been inside that experiment from the beginning.
