Chapter 1

The Woman in the Housekeeping Uniform

The Grand Alcazar Hotel had long been a sanctuary for the world's elite.

Politicians disappeared into its presidential suites whenever scandals erupted. Hollywood celebrities sought refuge behind its gilded walls. Billionaires finalized life-changing deals beneath crystal chandeliers while string quartets played softly in the marble lobby.

Every inch of the hotel whispered wealth.

Every smile was rehearsed.

Every secret had a price.

On this particular evening, the Grand Alcazar glittered brighter than ever.

Luxury sedans lined the entrance beneath a red carpet. Uniformed valets hurried to greet distinguished guests. A grand piano filled the air with the gentle melody of Chopin while the fragrance of rare oud drifted through the polished halls.

To everyone else, it was simply another perfect night.

For Julian Rossi...

It was the night his life broke apart all over again.

At thirty-eight, Julian Rossi had become one of Europe's youngest self-made billionaires.

His family had built Rossi Holdings from a small construction company into one of the largest real estate empires in Europe, but Julian had transformed it into something far greater.

Luxury resorts.

Commercial skyscrapers.

Private ports.

Shipping routes stretching across three continents.

Magazines called him "The King of European Real Estate."

His employees called him demanding.

His competitors called him ruthless.

The media called him untouchable.

Only one woman had ever called him simply...

"Jules."

And she had disappeared eight months ago.

"Are you listening?"

Camila's cheerful voice pulled him back to reality.

She slipped her arm through his as they entered the revolving doors.

Her emerald gown shimmered beneath the chandeliers, perfectly matching the emerald necklace Julian had purchased for her birthday only two weeks earlier.

"I booked us the rooftop suite," she said excitedly.

"The chef prepared your favorite truffle risotto."

She smiled brightly.

"And after dinner, we have the couples' massage."

Julian forced a polite smile.

"Sounds wonderful."

Camila frowned.

"You didn't hear a single word I said."

"I did."

"No, you didn't."

She sighed dramatically before smoothing her hair.

"You've been staring at your phone all afternoon."

Julian glanced at the dozens of unread emails waiting for his attention.

A billion-dollar merger with a Middle Eastern investment group was scheduled for the following morning.

Normally, nothing distracted him before negotiations.

Tonight...

His instincts felt strangely unsettled.

The concierge greeted them immediately.

"Welcome back to the Grand Alcazar, Mr. Rossi."

Julian nodded.

"Thank you."

Staff members rushed to collect their luggage.

Bellboys exchanged respectful greetings.

Managers appeared from nowhere, eager to ensure one of their most influential guests lacked absolutely nothing.

It was the kind of treatment Julian had grown accustomed to.

Until—

"Good evening, sir."

A soft voice drifted across the marble lobby.

"If you require additional towels or fresh linens, housekeeping is available twenty-four hours a day."

Time stopped.

Julian's fingers tightened around the handle of his briefcase.

The voice...

Impossible.

He hadn't heard it in eight months.

Yet he would have recognized it among a million others.

Slowly...

Almost afraid of what he might see...

He turned.

She stood beside a brass housekeeping cart stacked with folded towels.

Her charcoal-gray uniform hung loosely from her thin frame.

Dark hair, once flowing elegantly over her shoulders, had been twisted into a simple bun.

Her face looked pale.

Exhausted.

Far too thin.

Her hands, once soft enough to cradle delicate porcelain teacups, were now rough and cracked from endless cleaning chemicals.

But none of those things shattered Julian.

His eyes fell lower.

Then lower still.

His heartbeat stopped.

Elena...

...was pregnant.

Not slightly.

Not recently.

She was heavily pregnant.

At least seven months.

Maybe eight.

His world tilted.

Every sound inside the hotel disappeared.

The piano.

The conversations.

The clinking champagne glasses.

Everything faded into silence.

Only her remained.

"Elena..."

The name escaped his lips like a prayer.

She froze.

Only for a fraction of a second.

Then she slowly looked up.

Their eyes met.

Eight months of unanswered questions crashed into that single moment.

Julian expected tears.

Shock.

Relief.

Anything.

Instead...

Her face became perfectly calm.

Professional.

Emotionless.

"Good evening, sir."

Her voice remained steady.

"May I assist you with your luggage?"

Sir.

Not Jules.

Not Julian.

Sir.

The word cut deeper than any knife.

Camila glanced between them.

"You know each other?"

Julian couldn't answer.

He simply stared.

He remembered the last morning he had seen Elena.

She had kissed him goodbye before he left for a business meeting in Zurich.

"I'll wait up," she had smiled.

He had smiled back.

"I won't be late."

When he returned that evening...

The mansion was empty.

Her clothes remained.

Her jewelry remained.

Even her passport remained locked inside the bedroom safe.

Only one thing was missing.

Elena.

No note.

No explanation.

No goodbye.

She had simply...

Vanished.

Julian spent the next eight months searching.

Private investigators.

Interpol contacts.

Airline records.

Border surveillance.

Bank accounts.

Hospitals.

Nothing.

It was as though she had disappeared from the face of the earth.

He stopped sleeping.

He barely ate.

Business meetings became mechanical routines.

Friends urged him to move on.

His lawyers suggested filing for divorce.

His family quietly assumed Elena had abandoned him.

Eventually...

Julian tried to believe it too.

Because believing she had chosen to leave hurt less than believing something terrible had happened.

Now...

She was standing right in front of him.

Alive.

Pregnant.

Working as a hotel housekeeper.

"What are you doing here?" Julian whispered.

His voice trembled.

Elena's fingers tightened around the cleaning cart.

"I am working."

"No."

He stepped closer.

"I mean..."

His breathing became uneven.

"Where have you been?"

Silence.

"I looked everywhere."

No answer.

"I thought you were dead."

Still nothing.

His eyes drifted once more to her swollen belly.

Then back to her face.

"When..."

His voice cracked.

"The baby..."

Elena instinctively rested one hand over her stomach.

A protective gesture.

Almost unconscious.

Julian noticed.

His heart pounded violently.

The timing.

Eight months.

His calculations became terrifyingly simple.

The child...

Could only be his.

Camila suddenly laughed.

The sound echoed awkwardly through the silent lobby.

"Oh."

She crossed her arms.

"So this is the famous ex-wife."

Julian turned sharply.

"No."

Camila blinked.

"No?"

Julian's voice became firm.

"She isn't my ex-wife."

He looked directly at Elena.

"She is my wife."

The entire lobby fell silent.

A champagne flute slipped from someone's hand and shattered against the marble floor.

Hotel guests openly stared.

Staff members exchanged nervous glances.

The concierge hurried over.

"Mr. Rossi..."

His smile had vanished.

"Is there a problem?"

Before Julian could answer...

Elena spoke.

"There is no problem."

She lowered her eyes respectfully.

"I was simply assisting a guest."

Guest.

Not husband.

Nothing in her voice hinted they had ever shared a life together.

Camila's expression darkened.

She stepped closer to Julian.

"You told me she disappeared."

"She did."

"Then why is she acting like she doesn't know you?"

Julian didn't respond.

Because he wanted the answer just as desperately.

The housekeeping supervisor approached quickly.

A stern woman in her fifties.

"Elena."

Her voice carried quiet authority.

"Room 1812 is waiting."

Elena nodded immediately.

"Yes, ma'am."

She pushed the heavy cart forward.

Julian instinctively reached out.

His fingers wrapped gently around her wrist.

She stopped.

For the first time...

The mask cracked.

Her breathing quickened.

She refused to look at him.

"Please."

Julian's voice softened.

"Just talk to me."

"You disappeared."

"I deserve an explanation."

"I deserve to know why."

"And I deserve to know..."

His eyes fell once more to her stomach.

"...if that's our child."

Elena closed her eyes.

A single tear escaped before she quickly wiped it away.

When she finally spoke...

Her voice was barely above a whisper.

"You deserve many answers."

Julian's hope surged.

"But..."

She slowly pulled her hand free.

"I can't give them to you."

The supervisor frowned.

"Elena!"

She straightened immediately.

"I'm coming."

Without another word...

She pushed the housekeeping cart toward the service corridor.

Her pace quickened.

Almost becoming a run.

Julian stood frozen.

Watching her disappear.

Again.

"I'm going after her."

Camila grabbed his arm.

"Julian."

He didn't stop.

"Let go."

"You're embarrassing yourself."

He turned toward her.

"No."

His voice was calm.

"I'm trying to find my wife."

Those words hit Camila harder than any insult.

She slowly released his sleeve.

Julian hurried after Elena.

He reached the service hallway just in time to see the doors swinging shut.

The corridor beyond was empty.

She was gone.

Again.

Hidden inside a narrow storage room...

Elena leaned against the wall, trembling.

She pressed both hands against her belly.

Tears streamed silently down her face.

"I'm sorry..."

she whispered to the unborn baby.

"I'm so sorry."

The child shifted gently beneath her hands.

As if answering.

A quiet knock sounded on the storage-room door.

Elena wiped her tears.

"Come in."

The housekeeping supervisor entered.

Her expression softened.

"He saw you."

Elena nodded.

"Yes."

"Did you tell him?"

"No."

"Good."

The older woman looked around carefully before lowering her voice.

"Because if Julian Rossi learns the truth..."

She paused.

Her face turned pale.

"They'll kill him."

Elena closed her eyes.

"I know."

Outside the small storage room, unseen by either woman, a figure stood silently at the end of the corridor.

Hidden behind the corner.

Watching.

Listening.

Then, without making a sound, the stranger pulled out a phone and typed a single message.

He found her.

The reply came only seconds later.

May you like

Then it's time to finish what we started.
