Chapter 8

Chapter 8
The Hidden Recording
The silver key sat on Julian Rossi's desk like a forgotten relic.
Small.
Worn.
Ordinary.
Yet everyone who had touched the investigation seemed willing to risk their life for it.
Giovanni Moretti had hidden it beneath a floorboard.
Someone had kidnapped him trying to find it.
And now...
Julian couldn't stop staring at the single letter engraved on its faded leather tag.
R.
The old wine cellar beneath the Rossi Estate.
A place no one had entered in over fifteen years.
Nathan Carter arrived just after sunrise.
The former military investigator had protected the Rossi family for nearly a decade.
He trusted evidence.
Not coincidences.
He placed a thin folder on Julian's desk.
"I've reviewed everything we know."
Julian looked up.
"And?"
Nathan folded his arms.
"Someone has been manipulating your life for months."
"They monitored Elena."
"They sabotaged your car."
"They kidnapped Giovanni."
He paused.
"But here's the strange part."
Julian frowned.
"They've had countless opportunities to kill Elena."
"They didn't."
"They wanted her afraid."
"They wanted her isolated."
"They wanted her away from you."
Julian slowly nodded.
"So Elena was never the real target."
"No."
Nathan's expression darkened.
"You were."
An hour later...
The black SUV carrying Julian and Nathan rolled through the gates of the Rossi Estate.
The mansion looked exactly as Julian remembered.
Perfect gardens.
White marble columns.
Fountains sparkling beneath the morning sun.
Yet it felt empty.
Cold.
Ever since Elena disappeared, the house had become little more than an expensive shell.
The elderly groundskeeper unlocked a rusted iron gate behind the mansion.
"The cellar hasn't been opened since your father's funeral, sir."
Julian accepted the key from Nathan.
His hand hesitated.
Then he inserted it into the ancient lock.
A loud click echoed through the silence.
The heavy wooden door slowly creaked open.
A wave of cool, damp air drifted upward.
The staircase descended into darkness.
Dust coated every step.
Cobwebs stretched across old wine racks.
Rows of vintage bottles rested untouched beneath stone arches.
Nathan switched on his flashlight.
"This place is bigger than I expected."
Julian nodded.
"My grandfather built it during the war."
"They used it as a shelter."
He looked around.
"My father sealed it after my mother's death."
Nathan noticed something unusual.
One section of the wall looked newer than the others.
Fresh mortar.
Different stone.
"Julian."
He pointed.
"This wasn't part of the original cellar."
Together they moved several heavy wine crates aside.
Behind them...
A narrow steel door emerged.
No handle.
Only a keyhole.
The silver key fit perfectly.
Inside was a hidden storage room no larger than a walk-in closet.
There were no shelves.
No furniture.
Only a single wooden chest resting in the center.
Julian knelt beside it.
The lid wasn't locked.
Inside lay several old documents.
A leather-bound notebook.
And...
A black USB flash drive wrapped inside a waterproof bag.
Nathan carefully lifted it.
"Maybe this is what Giovanni was protecting."
Minutes later...
They connected the USB drive to Julian's laptop in the mansion library.
Only one file appeared.
PRIVATE_RECORDING.mp4
Time stamp:
Eight Months Ago.
Julian clicked Play.
The screen flickered.
The image was shaky, as though recorded by a hidden phone.
The camera pointed toward an unfamiliar office.
Elena stood near a large window.
She looked frightened.
Very different from the woman Julian remembered.
Across from her sat a man.
His face remained outside the camera's view.
Only his voice could be heard.
Cold.
Calm.
Calculated.
"You have two choices."
Elena remained silent.
The man slid several papers across the desk.
"Sign the divorce documents."
She stared at them.
"I won't."
The man's laugh was soft.
"I expected that answer."
He placed another envelope beside the papers.
Elena slowly opened it.
Her hands immediately began to shake.
Julian leaned closer to the screen.
"What was inside?"
The camera angle couldn't show it.
But Elena's horrified expression said enough.
She whispered,
"No..."
The man spoke again.
"Those photographs were taken this morning."
"If you refuse..."
"Tomorrow's photographs will be from the morgue."
Julian's blood ran cold.
The recording continued.
Elena looked toward the hidden camera.
Almost as if she sensed someone was watching.
Tears streamed down her face.
"You'll never stop."
"No."
The man answered.
"Not until Julian Rossi is completely alone."
Julian slammed his fist onto the desk.
"Damn it!"
Nathan quickly paused the video.
"Wait."
He replayed the last thirty seconds.
Again.
And again.
Julian frowned.
"What?"
Nathan adjusted the volume higher.
"Listen."
The mysterious man spoke only a few sentences.
Yet one tiny detail caught Nathan's attention.
Every time he pronounced the letter R...
There was the slightest roll in his accent.
Almost imperceptible.
Julian looked confused.
"What does that mean?"
Nathan's eyes narrowed.
"He's trying to disguise his voice."
"But he forgot about his accent."
Julian replayed the clip once more.
This time...
He wasn't listening to the words.
He was listening to the rhythm.
The pauses.
The pronunciation.
Something about it felt painfully familiar.
"I've heard this voice before."
Nathan nodded.
"I think so too."
"But where?"
The recording wasn't over.
Julian pressed Play again.
The man stood.
Still outside the frame.
He handed Elena a pen.
"Sign."
She slowly shook her head.
"I'd rather disappear."
"Good."
The man smiled.
"That's exactly what I want."
Then—
A loud knock interrupted the meeting.
Someone entered the office.
Only their legs became visible on camera.
Expensive Italian leather shoes.
Dark tailored trousers.
The newcomer spoke.
"Everything ready?"
The first man answered,
"Almost."
The second voice froze Julian where he sat.
He knew that voice.
Not perfectly.
But enough to recognize it.
He whispered,
"No..."
Nathan turned sharply.
"What?"
Julian looked at the screen in disbelief.
"I know him."
"Who?"
Julian couldn't answer.
Because he wasn't ready to believe it himself.
Before either man could speak again...
The recording abruptly ended.
No explanation.
No names.
Only darkness.
Nathan removed the USB drive.
"If Giovanni hid this..."
"He wanted you to see it."
Julian stared silently at the blank screen.
Then he whispered,
"It wasn't Camila."
Nathan frowned.
"What?"
"The voice..."
"It isn't hers."
He took a slow breath.
"It's someone..."
"...inside my family."
The words hung heavily in the room.
Nathan felt a chill run down his spine.
Family betrayals were always the most dangerous.
Because trust gave traitors access that strangers could never earn.
At that same moment...
Inside an abandoned warehouse near the docks...
Giovanni Moretti slowly regained consciousness.
His face was bruised.
One eye had swollen shut.
Footsteps echoed across the concrete floor.
The same mysterious man approached carrying a tablet.
He smiled as he turned the screen toward Giovanni.
On it...
A live security feed from the Rossi Mansion.
Julian and Nathan stood in the library.
Watching the hidden recording.
The man's smile widened.
"So..."
"They found it."
Giovanni managed a weak smile despite the pain.
"I told you..."
"You were already too late."
The stranger's expression hardened.
He leaned close enough for Giovanni to smell the expensive cologne on his suit.
"Then I suppose..."
"...it's finally time to silence everyone who still remembers the truth."
The warehouse lights suddenly went dark.
A single gunshot echoed through the building.
Then...
May you like
Silence.
