Chapter 5

Chapter 5
A Dangerous Lie
The ashes drifted into the cold evening air.
From the shattered window of the abandoned building, the last fragment of Elena's letter disappeared into the wind, carrying with it the one name that could have unraveled the entire conspiracy.
The man watched until every blackened piece had vanished.
Then he smiled.
"Now," he murmured to himself, "they'll spend the rest of their lives chasing shadows."
He turned and disappeared into the darkness.
Across the street, Elena stood frozen in the middle of her tiny apartment.
The wooden box lay open on the floor.
The envelope addressed to Julian was gone.
Her knees weakened.
"No..."
She dropped the grocery bag. A bottle of water rolled across the kitchen floor, but she barely noticed.
Someone had been inside.
Someone knew about the letter.
And if that someone had seen Julian...
Everything she had sacrificed for the past eight months had been for nothing.
A sudden knock echoed through the apartment.
Three slow knocks.
Elena's heart nearly stopped.
She instinctively wrapped both arms around her stomach.
"Who's there?"
"It's me."
Julian.
She closed her eyes.
Part of her wanted to run into his arms.
The other part remembered the threat that had destroyed their lives.
She unlocked the door.
Julian stepped inside quietly.
Neither of them spoke for several seconds.
He held the torn letter in his hand.
"I found this."
Elena looked at the missing half and immediately understood.
"You weren't supposed to."
"I know."
His voice was calm.
"But I did."
He gently placed the letter on the table.
"Tell me the truth."
She looked away.
"I can't."
"You have to."
"I can't."
Julian took one careful step closer.
"Eight months, Elena."
"I searched for you every day."
"I thought you were dead."
His voice trembled.
"And now I find you living like this..."
He looked around the apartment.
"...working until you're exhausted..."
"...raising our child alone..."
"Please."
His eyes pleaded with hers.
"Don't lie to me again."
Elena felt tears burning behind her eyes.
She wanted to tell him everything.
About the anonymous calls.
The photographs.
The threats.
The night a black car had followed her home.
The envelope containing a single bullet.
The message written beneath it.
Leave Julian Rossi.
Or prepare to bury him.
She remembered trembling so violently that she could barely breathe.
She remembered the phone call that came only minutes later.
A man's cold voice.
"You have twenty-four hours."
"If you stay..."
"He dies."
She had believed him.
Because he had described details no stranger should have known.
The security system in the Rossi mansion.
Julian's daily schedule.
The scar on his shoulder from a skiing accident.
Someone very close to Julian was feeding information to the people threatening them.
That was the only explanation.
"I left to protect you," Elena whispered.
Julian frowned.
"Protect me from whom?"
"I don't know."
He stared at her.
"You don't know?"
"I never saw their faces."
"Then how do you know they were real?"
She looked at him, hurt flashing across her face.
"You think I invented this?"
"I think you're terrified."
He softened his voice.
"And terrified people don't always see clearly."
She slowly shook her head.
"I wasn't imagining the threats."
"They knew everything about us."
"They watched us."
"They knew where you were every hour of every day."
Julian's expression changed.
That detail...
She couldn't have invented.
He pulled a chair closer.
"Start from the beginning."
Elena hesitated.
Then, for the first time in eight months...
She told him part of the truth.
"It started three days before you left for Zurich."
"I found an envelope outside the front gate."
"No stamp."
"No name."
"Just mine."
She swallowed.
"Inside was a photograph."
Julian leaned forward.
"What photograph?"
"Our bedroom."
His eyes narrowed.
"They had taken it through the window."
"There was another photo."
"You walking into Rossi Holdings."
"A third."
"You meeting investors."
She closed her eyes.
"They were following you."
Julian's jaw tightened.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"I wanted to."
"What stopped you?"
"The phone rang."
She looked down at her hands.
"The man said if I told anyone..."
"...you'd never come home."
Silence filled the apartment.
Julian believed she was telling the truth.
He could hear it in her voice.
See it in her trembling hands.
But one question remained.
"Why disappear?"
She looked at him with heartbreaking sadness.
"Because I believed losing me..."
"...was better than losing your life."
Julian stood and walked toward the window.
Rain streaked down the glass.
"You should have trusted me."
"I wanted to."
"You didn't."
"I couldn't risk being wrong."
He closed his eyes.
"You made that decision alone."
"I know."
"You never gave me the chance to protect you."
"I was trying to protect you."
Their voices never rose.
Neither of them was angry.
Only exhausted.
Broken by eight months of silence.
A sudden movement outside caught Julian's attention.
Across the street, a black sedan slowly pulled away from the curb.
Its headlights remained off despite the fading daylight.
Julian frowned.
"Do you know that car?"
Elena looked through the window.
The color drained from her face.
"It's been outside three times this week."
"You've seen it before?"
She nodded.
"I thought I was imagining it."
Julian immediately reached for his phone.
"I'm calling security."
"No!"
She grabbed his wrist.
Her sudden panic startled him.
"If they know you're here..."
Her voice cracked.
"They'll come after you."
Julian gently took her hands.
"They already know."
At that exact moment, inside the black sedan, a man lowered a pair of binoculars.
He picked up his phone.
"They're together."
A familiar voice answered.
"Are they talking?"
"Yes."
"Did she tell him?"
"Not everything."
The voice remained calm.
"Good."
The man hesitated.
"Should we proceed?"
A long silence followed.
Then came the order.
"Yes."
"Accidents happen every day."
Julian prepared to leave.
"I'll come back tomorrow."
"You shouldn't."
"I will."
"They'll be watching."
"So will I."
He stepped closer and gently kissed Elena's forehead.
She closed her eyes.
For one brief moment, she allowed herself to remember the life they had once shared.
When he pulled away, she whispered,
"I'm sorry."
Julian smiled sadly.
"I'm done blaming you."
He rested one hand gently against her stomach.
"I'm going to protect both of you."
Then he left.
Elena stood by the window until his car disappeared.
A strange uneasiness settled over her.
She reached for her phone.
There were no missed calls.
No messages.
Yet she couldn't shake the feeling that something terrible was about to happen.
Less than twenty minutes later...
Julian's driver guided the black luxury sedan onto the coastal highway leading back toward the city center.
Rain continued to fall.
Traffic was light.
Julian stared silently out the window, replaying every word Elena had spoken.
Then—
A deafening metallic snap echoed beneath the car.
The steering wheel jerked violently.
The driver fought for control.
"Sir!"
"What happened?"
"The brakes!"
His face turned white.
"They're gone!"
The sedan shot through a red light at terrifying speed.
Horns blared.
Tires screamed against the wet pavement.
Julian grabbed the dashboard as the vehicle hurtled toward a crowded intersection.
The driver yanked the emergency brake.
Nothing.
A fuel truck crossed directly ahead.
There was no time.
The last thing Julian saw before impact...
Was a pair of headlights accelerating toward them.
Not trying to avoid the crash.
May you like
Trying to make sure it happened.
